100th Run #2

100th Run - Book Two: A Regressor's LitRPG Adventure

Rate this book
But this is the 100th Run. This is the only one that matters.

As a monstrous swarm of enormous wasp-like creatures, called Vespae, prepare to invade, it’s up to Anthony and his ragtag crew to make the impossible… slightly less impossible.

Unfortunately, the deadly creatures lurking in the wilds aren’t Anthony’s only problem. His past triumphs have made him a target for the vindictive system administrators—not to mention a host of bloodthirsty villains who now have him firmly in their crosshairs. As a result, the rules of the game are changing in a way he can no longer anticipate.

To pull victory from the jaws of defeat, Anthony will need to navigate the hostile wilderness, build some unlikely alliances, and find a way to unify Etson’s divided factions. This is the 100th Run. Failure isn’t an option and if the city can’t repel the invasion, the Vespae will conquer, and Anthony's dream of a golden age will died before it even begins.

I left the last book with a list of requirements of what this book needed to do to maintain my interest in this series, and unfortunately it failed to deliver. The main problems are:

1. There's not much depth to the main character, making it hard to get invested in his story.

2. I still don't know much about the protagonist's past, what drives him, or any concrete motivations that will make him feel real to me.

3. I don't know what success or failure looks like beyond a vague notion of wanting to save as much of humanity as possible. That's all well and good as a goal, but it doesn't lend any structure to the series as a whole. It's impossible to gauge the progress through the series without knowing where it is going. So far, the story has covered a handful of days. Is it going to last a few weeks, a few months, a few decades? The destination is so vague that it's impossible to tell whether progress is being made.

Basically, I thought that the first book was a little underdeveloped, but it did just enough to earn the benefit of the doubt. This book doesn't deliver much more to improve on that status, so unfortunately, the benefit of the doubt has gone and this is where I part ways with this series.

Anthony is back with another attempt at his 100th run of the game, he has gained a lot of experience, however he has also gained some enemies who consider him to be a hot head and refuse to follow his lead. His main enemy whilst trying to save Etson is Father Alexander and his cult, this man is power hungry and refuses to share his power with Anthony who is not even interested in power but just wants to save as many lives as he can this run around. Etson is invaded by gigantic and poisonous waspae who want to take over the town, however Anthony with the help of his friends Jeff, Kayla and Corwin, their lovely and loyal dog, attempt to save the town and do the impossible, to kill the wasp queen of the hive. This time around Anthony also has the Dealer helping him, but more importantly he has his angel Esaraphelscion the angel of the end, on his side too. There are limits to the amount of help she is allowed to provide as the system is against interference and is out to stop Anthony in any way it can, however she believes in him. This is another jam packed adventure LitRPG novel which keeps the pages turning and I loved it!

if you like whimsical wacky, RPG, you will enjoy this book if not, skip it

Like I said in my previous review, this is an OK book. The story is great. The world building is good and side characters are written well. The MC is likable. It’s just that something is missing in this story and in these books. In my opinion, I believe is the power progression. The characters can only level up to a point until they finish the scenarios they placed in, very few loot drops except from bosses, no agency for the MC or his associates to assign character, points or skills. And as far as the skills and abilities are concerned, they come mostly from the loot drops. Some of the spells and equipment that the characters use especially MC all kind of Looney e.g. bowling balls. If you like a fun wacky story, you will enjoy this. RPG was really very few stats. Like I said a fun read just may not be everybody’s cup of tea.

I loved this book so much! And maybe especially 'cause Corwin's a incredibly good boy! Obviously!
Anthony has managed to find a time loop when earth changed and a game like system took over! The system wanted to cause as chaos and death as possible. Anthony has now finished his 99th run gaining both power and knowledge... And now Anthony's on his final run, his last chance to save his city! Burning that knowledge, he's ready to game the system! With three of his favorite players Jeff, Kayla, their dog Corwin they set about doing, just that!
So yeah you're gonna need, no Need (believe/you me) this book in your library!
Grab audiobook because you don't wanna miss Daniel Thomas May's narration.

There's something about this series that leaves me cold, like watching someone play Skyrim for the 100th time. On the other hand, aside from the flood of redundant prepositions, the writing is pretty good and the action is well rendered.

I liked the snippets of planning with Anthony's angel that predated the 100th run. They served as a settling intermission as well as reminding us of both his relationship and his goals.

While the first half dragged a little, the ending brought us home strong. It hit some satisfying emotional notes and set up book three. However, I'm not particularly eager to jump into book three.

Strangely good

I've really enjoyed both books in this series so far . The protagonist doesn't take himself too seriously, there are enough item and stats to be satisfying without clogging pages with tables and endless repetition. In story terms I've been happily surprised just how well the author spins his tales. The pace is good, his characters have real presence and individuality, and are not always best of friends. This produces good dramatic tension. Well done Flossindune! 4 stars only because nothing is perfect.

Now that we're in book two, Anthony is back to acting like a psychic because he can see future events happening. He leads his team of merry adventures and makes sure they know what they're getting into. There is plenty of action and adventure the for the small part of Florida they call home in a post-apocalyptic world.

For me book two felt like an extension of book two more than a brand new story. Most of the plot threads we've already seen, but they simply weren't dealt with in book one. I'll admit to feeling slightly disappointed that we weren't seeing an entirely new part of the world with new bosses and dangers. Yes, there is a bit of newness here but there is plenty of stuff that we've seen before. The vespae were tackled in book 1, and now we're wrapping that in book two.

The editing is fine and there are plenty of stats for those who like to follow the growth. I really hope book three takes us somewhere we've never been before, whether it's on the train or somewhere else. Maybe we can head to Georgia or the gulf coast. I don't really care, I just want to see what is happening in the rest of the world.

Big Fight!

I very much like the little party of Anthony, Kayla, Jeff, and Corwin. This has a nice family/clan feel to it. So this system apocalypse returner feels a bit cozier than most. Ant's long distance relationship is pretty sweet. Nice feels with a side of gore and considerate mayhem. Woof!

Great continuation!!

This is a fun regression LitRPG series. One of my favorite things about this series are the item drops. They are just so tacky and hilarious lol…
Looking forward to the next book!

Good sequel. That plot is moving a long nicely. I still don’t care about Anthony’s relationship with the Angel. Unfortunately it is kind of important to the plot. Overall, I like the direction that things are going. I’m excited for the next book.

Excellent

Obviously since the main character is over powered due to having done this run 99 times, it should be easy?

Unfortunately the scenarios change, and it’s lot more challenging and makes for an exciting read!

More rounded than the first

I found this book a better fit than the first. Our MC still sees possible futures, but he is not playing a jerk. I like the idea of the dog, I can see the usefulness of keeping it, but the Dealers deal was good, I am excited for the next book.

Apocalypses are the best

This series is awesome. It reminds me of another favorite series (Dungeon Crawler Carl) in a lot of ways. Reading about an unexpected boon after a plan goes awfully askew is always awesome. Looking forward to book 3.
