Helen Meeker is back and has less than thirty days to stop the execution of an innocent pastor who has unbelievably confessed to being a Nazi spy. While on a case that has dynamic implications to uncovering an espionage ring operating on American and British soil, Helen defuses a hostage crisis in a bank robbery gone wrong, unearths an explosive coffin, and is introduced to a dead English hero who seems very much alive. The fate of an innocent girl and the world’s two most dynamic leaders depend upon Helen’s connecting cases before Wilbur Shellmeyer faces a firing squad, and Churchill and Roosevelt meet for a secret conference in upstate New York.
Set against the backdrop of the early days of World War II, A Date with Death combines action, adventure, mystery, and romance in a tale that will keep readers on the edge of their seats until they, like Helen Meeker, answer the question, “Do I save the leader of the free world or an innocent man scheduled to die to protect someone he loves?” Which life is more important?
Though the answer to this question will be revealed at the end of A Date with Death, Helen’s action and adventure will continue at a break-neck pace throughout the “In the President’s Service Series,” as she takes on new challenges and dangers. Purchase the eBooks each month here!

I never use to enjoy suspense novels in the Christian genre, but the authors are doing a better job with plots, subplots, and characters. This book proves all of the above to be true.
This is a monthly series e-book...great suspense and nothing offensive. I find that very refreshing in the publishing world today.
Helen Meeker works for the a President of the United States during WWII. Her job is a wide one... Everything from being a beautiful escort to visitors from other countries to trying to save others lives through her work as a detective. The plots and subplots are well written. I must admit to it taking me a bit to get into the book, but that can be a good thing as the suspense builds. I like to be drawn in from page one, but a building up of suspense isn't a bad idea. Thirty pages in...I was hooked. ( This book is only about 150 pages.)
Helen, along with her partner, is trying to save a man's life as he is giving his to save his daughters life. She is in a race against time to prove he falsely confessed to being a spy. Her great detective work found big holes in the evidence that the government had. While trying to save the man's life, she is being wooed by the British man she is escorting on the Presidents orders. Will she save a life? Will she fall in love? All questions one asks as they read this page turner.
I didn't feel like I really knew the characters well in this book and parts seemed a bit rushed. However, I would recommend reading this book as I found it intriguing and highly entertaining. It was definitely a quick, fun read.
I was given this book by The Book Club Network for my honest opinion which I have given.
Ace Collins', A Date with Death, is the first installment in his series, In the President's Service.
I am a fan of WWII stories and I looked forward to this one.
The main characters are described well and the author sets the tone of suspense and intrigue. I found Helen Meeker to be a hot shot detective that seems to be able to solve any problem. She gives the impression that if"you men can solve this problem, let me do it." She probably has the ability to do it as she is not beholding to the military, but assumes that her friendship with FDR gives her more clout.
Then there are the two men who find her very attractive; but she is strong, and must ignore her feelings for them for the sake of national security.
The author kept my interest and I was surprised by some incidences in the story. In the next installment , I hope Ace Collins has written more Nazi intrigue and unexpected turn of events. Will Helen chose between her two suitors? Will she be captured by Nazi spies and tortured for her knowledge of FDR and Churchill's war strategies? Stay tuned next month for the continuing saga of In the President's Service.
I received the E-book free from the author and the BookClub Network for my honest review.
I found this story completely captivating, and very much a page turner. There was only one thing I was disappointed in...that the end came so soon. I was thrilled with Helen Meeker...it was such an eye opener to see history as it unfolded through her eyes. I could almost feel Helen's anguish and frustration as she strove to prove her theories right, before it was too late, see the stress of those close to the President during this time of unrest. Although the story seemed rathter rushed, I feel it was the nature of the book as well as a way to give the feeling of the distress of war to the reader. There were a few references to another book also by Ace Collins in which Helen was involved, and I wonder if that was read first if the characters in this story would be more fleshed out. I will be looking for that one, The Yellow Packard, as well as following episodes in the “In the President's Service Series” of which Date With Death is the first one.
Thank you to Ace Collins, as well as to Fred at The Bookclub Network for the opportunity to read this ebook. I was given the ebook free in exchange for an honest review. The opinions are my own.
Wilbur Shellmeyer, a mild-mannered Lutheran minister, confessed to treason and espionage for the Nazis and is now sitting on death row waiting to be executed.
Helen Meeker, FBI agent and special assistant to President Franklin Roosevelt, has reviewed Shellmeyer's file and found some inconsistencies that lead her to believe he is innocent and is keeping silent to protect something -- or somebody -- he believes is worth dying for. Unfortunately, she has only twelve days to determine whether her theory is true.
And as if that weren't enough pressure, FDR has ordered Helen to be seen in public with a British war hero while Prime Minister Churchill is in the country ...
This is the first of 15 books about the adventures of Superwoman, I mean Helen Meeker, assistant to the president, FDR. She faces down grenades, bullets, sliced brake lines, more bullets, and imposters & Nazi spies. Catching one bad guy just leads to the next adventure, however. On to book two.
I enjoyed this book very much and read it much faster than I usually read because I was so caught up in the story and the characters. Ace Collins is a great writer. I recommend this book.
A Date with Death, Episode 1 in Ace Collin’s new series called In the President’s Service, is an exciting race against time to free an innocent pastor and find who really committed the crimes he is sentenced to die for. Detective Helen Meeker, who works directly for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, is delightfully clever, having noted the discrepancy that the investigators who examined the evidence that backed up the pastor’s confession. The writing and descriptions are, for the most part, matter-of-fact; occasionally the descriptions are humorous, and every vehicle was described for the reader who appreciates the classic cars and trucks. One thing that I appreciated was the respect given to the office of the President. While Helen had audience with the President when needed, she did not take it for granted that she reported directly to him or could go to him with the challenges she faced – even when trying to negotiate with the bank robbers who were in the way of their progress on the case. I tried to remember a time when I saw the office of the President as the greatest leader of the free world and could not. Perhaps President Kennedy was the only one I remember during my lifetime as an important world leader; it bears considering that we do need to respect the office of President as well as Vice President and other national, state, or local leaders. Helen’s work with FBI agent Henry Reese is professional and at times showing that they are two old friends who enjoy working together and bouncing ideas off of each other. One would like to see romance develop between the two, and the hint of jealousy is evident when the very attractive woman had to be act as hostess and date during British Corporal Nigel Andrews’ visit to the United States. Corporal Andrews did not seem like a man who was esteemed by his government – a bitter, tired man who should have been retired so he could return to his lady friend and home. He certainly did not seem to have the respect for his deceased commanding officer, Reginald Fister, that one would anticipate. Learning that Fister had actually survived the German gunfire to which he was subjected while allowing his men to escape was a stunning turn of events. Reggie a lady’s man, went to great lengths to woo Helen, even wanting her to marry him. One of these two men is a traitor – which one is it, and will Helen be able to discern the truth? Will she be able to find the truth so that the pastor can be free before his scheduled execution? Pursuing the solution plunges Helen in a race against time through harrowing events in which her courage and brilliant mind are tested. If you like WWII novels, espionage stories with clever detectives and a hint of romance, wrapped up in a nice, neat package that arrives to your e-reader each month, this series is for you! Thank you, Ace Collins, and Fred and Norma St. Laurent for the privilege of reading this first episode of this new series! *Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book through the “For Readers Only” group at The Book Club Network, in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own, and no monetary compensation was received for this review.
Title: A Date With Death (In The President’s Service – Episode 1) Author: Ace Collins Publisher: Elk Lake Publishing ASIN: B00HAKO34W
“This is not about you or me; it’s about saving an innocent man’s life. That’s what I do. I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t keep trying until the bitter end. And one night with you, no matter how tempting, is just not in the cards,” Helen Meeker explains in Ace Collins’s mystery, " A Date With Death (In The President’s Service – Episode 1)."
At one hundred and seventy-six pages, this first in the monthly series e-book is geared toward readers who like action, adventure, and romance during World War Two. With no profanity, overtly sexual scenes, or extreme violence, this reader wishes all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence.
The year is 1941 and Nigel Andrews, a bitter British soldier, witnesses his commander, Reggie Fister, take several bullets to save many in his regiment as they escape France. When all assume the hero is deceased, Nigel goes to America as Churchill’s bodyguard in his stead.
Months later, the beautiful, shrewd, and intuitive Helen Meeker is asked by President Roosevelt, a longtime friend who she now works for, to escort Nigel to local events in Washington. However, being the detective she is, she is distracted by a case involving a Lutheran minister who has been arrested for spying for the Nazis and only has twelve days until his execution.
Meeker quickly diffuses a bank robbery that includes hostages so she can get her partner’s complete attention to work on the new case. The two try to connect the dots why the pastor so easily confessed after his daughter’s coffin was placed in the ground.
During a time when women were not accepted in the FBI, Meeker plays the perfect protagonist, staying one step ahead of everyone else as she dines with Andrews, meets the supposedly deceased and charming Fister, engages with FDR, and searches for clues in a cemetery in segregated Georgia, visit a couple in Pennsylvania, and search a New York haunted house.
Meanwhile with campy dialogue from the time period, the arrogant and boastful Fister and the timid partner vie for the woman’s romantic attentions. With the clock ticking, Meeker solves one case before being thrown into the next dangerous adventure.
Although predictable, this novella is a nice distraction that can be read in several hours as one anticipates the next scenario in the flawless heroine’s life working with the President of the United States.
This book was furnished by The Book Club Network Inc. in lieu of a review based on the reader’s honest opinion.
I’m not one for period fiction, so I was a little dismayed when I started Ace Collins’s book, A Date with Death. The preview said this was a book with a female lead. I decided I would at least get through the second chapter. After all, I was reading the book courtesy of bookfun.org and was supposed to give an honest review. I figured I had to stick it out. Enter, Helen Meeker. We get a slow introduction to her, that her family has been friends with Franklin Roosevelt, that she apparently has a good car and has a strong reputation. I kept reading. We get to follow this 1940s heroine that seems to kick butt and takes names through her adventures to find the truth in a case. She’s seeking to find if a man set to be executed for treason is really innocent. Decent intrigue. Helen teams up with Henry Reese, a FBI agent she has history with. We get to follow them through dangerous ins and outs as they race against time to see if this man’s life is worth saving. Throw in talk of a traitor from our British ally, a handsome soldier vying for Helen’s attention and a girl that knows how to drive and you have a formula for a great book. This is definitely a book you won’t want to put down. Ace Collins writes with such imagery that you feel you’re in the car racing through dangerous, wet roads along with our heroine. The only down side for this book was wait time involved until the next in the series! One of the last lines sums up Helen Meeker: “Never underestimate an American woman – especially this one.”
My review : A Date With Death is a five star first installment. I so want the next one, I find myself checking my email to see if It is available yet, and I believe anyone that has read any of Ace Collins's book will agree he has not let his fans down with this story. If you haven't read any of his other works, I believe you will become an instant fan. This story takes place in 1941 and in the middle of the war. Helen Meeker works for Franklin Roosevelt, the President. She is a remarkable woman and wants what other women wants but mostly wants Edgar J. Hoover to realize that women can and should be able to work for the FBI. In this first installment, Helen is on a mission to save an innocent man, a preacher, who has confessed to being a spy, believing he can save other innocent people from being killed from the real spy. The story plot kept me turning the pages to see who the real spy really was. Helen puts her life in danger to prove that the preacher is innocent, will she save him in time, before his execution date? The ending isn't exactly the way I wanted it to end but the fact that it ended realistically is what makes this such a good story. The ending has the reader wishing there were more pages to turn, as Helen is starting another mission to save others, this time, the stakes are more personable to her.

A Date with Death, Episode One in “In the President’s Service Series” by Ace Collins This is the first in a series by Ace Collins, and I believe once you have read the first, you will be hooked, not so patiently waiting for the second-which thankfully will be available very soon.
WWII is the setting for this story, and the leading lady, Helen Meeker, is in the service of the President, in a variety of ways including escort to visitors from other countries, and as detective. I loved that the main character, was a woman and a detective n the service of the president, quite the prestigious job, especially considering the time.
Helen has less than a week to prove the innocence of a man, a pastor, before he is put to death, for crimes she know he did not commit. Making her job even tougher he won't cooperate. Why on earth would a man be willing to die, for something he didn't do? Helen is definitely on to something. Her mind races, and the clues all lead....you'll have to read to find out.
This is a short read, and a fast read, as you will not be able to put it down. Just when you think it's over, another page turner. And best of all, the end will leave you wanting more!! You will be hooked.
Thanks to Fred St. Laurent and bookfun.org for offering me this ebook in exchange for an honest review
This is a real old-fashioned thriller, a novel of World War II intrigue with a twist or two that could keep you on the edge of your seat. This is Episode 1 of In the President's Service.
Helen Meeker works for President Franklin Roosevelt as a sort of frustrated FBI agent. Frustrated because J. Edgar Hoover wants the FBI to be a boys-only club. Frustrated because she knows she is as good or better than any of the boys-only club's agents.
Her former partner Henry Reese agrees with her, along with thinking she's a verrrrry pretty lady. She wants to recruit Henry's help in a case she's interested in.
The President has asked Helen to hang on the arm of a British visiting hero--or rather the hero's stand-in, seeing as how the hero is supposedly dead. She really doesn't want to do it, because she wants to prove a man's innocence before he goes to the electric chair the following week. But it's the President who asked it, so she has to juggle both the entertaining duty with the urgent case.
Warning: The book ends with a real teaser to grab the next book immediately, and it's already released, so you won't have to wait long. As soon as you finish A Date with Death the next one, The Dark Pool, can be downloaded.
Ace Collin's has started a new series set during WWII. While not a book that I would normally pick up, I was glad that I was given this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Helen Meeker works for FDR. She is one of his "assistances" but she is much more. With a keen mind and a pretty face, Helen Meeker is a great detective.
Discovering information that may prove the innocence of an accused "Nazi spy", Meeker teams together with her old partner Henry Reese, who works for the FBI. Together they try to uncover why a minister would basically give up and admit that he was a spy. With his execution happening in just over a week, Meeker and her old partner must unravel the secrets.
Meanwhile, a "undead" British war hero, a missing young woman, and another disillusioned British soldier add to the secrets that they must unravel. Will they find the answers in time? Will more than one innocent man die?
Ace Collin's writing is very well done. His characters are well defined. The action of the story keeps you wanting to turn the pages. I cannot wait for the next installment in order to see if Helen will be able to find her sister and/or her partner.
I am thankful for the opportunity to read this book and review it.
I usually steer far clear of WWII-themed books, but this one was great! A Lutheran pastor, Wilbur Shellmeyer, is accused of spying for the Nazis and will be executed. Helen Meeker, who used to work for the FBI and now works directly for FDR himself, is certain Shellmeyer confessed to cover for someone else. Meeker enrolls help from her former partner, Henry Reese, and they hurry to prove Shellmeyer innocent before the execution date. However, FDR has an important assignment for Meeker, too, that includes dating the British officer assigned to Winston Churchill, who is coming to DC for a visit. Helen finds herself falling in love, confused, and running out of time to figure out the few cryptic clues Shellmeyer leaves, that will impact international security.
This is episode 1 of a serial story. It fittingly ends, leaving the reader gasping for the next page or push of a Kindle button. Espionage, war scenes, romance, booby traps, and an emphasis on Helen's yellow Packard help the story appeal to both men and women. I highly recommend it!

This is a story I did not want to put down. It is the first episode in Ace Collins new series titled In The Presidents Service. I'm looking forward to the next episode. The setting is during World War II. Helen Meeker the main character is a former FBI agent and now works for President Franklin Roosevelt and also puts her detective skills to work trying to save the lives of others. The President has ordered her to be an escort to a British soldier, but she has just teamed up with her previous partner FBI Agent Henry Reese to prove that a minister, Wilbur Shellmeyer is innocent after he confessed to being a Nazi spy. Why did he confess? Helen has only a short amount of time to prove he is innocent before his execution and help his family. How is she going to do this and be an escort at the same time? The story is fast paced and keeps you on the edge with twists and turns. There is mystery, suspense, thrills and espionage. Does Helen prove the minister is innocent? Who is the real spy? I highly recommend this book.
I received this book from bookfun.org for my honest opinion and review.
Ace Collins quickly draws his readers in with this first installment of In the President's Service. His main character, Helen Meeker is high energy, personable and always in the thick of an adventure. A Date with Death has intrigue and romance, ministers and spies, and keeps the reader on the edge of the seat wondering what is coming next for Helen as she works for President Roosevelt. Some history, some humor and Collins has his readers hankering for more. The book is a quick read and almost too quickly the reader is at the cliff hanger, wondering how Meeker will resolve her next intriguing dilemma. I'm looking forward to the next installment. I received a copy of this book through the “For Readers Only” group at The Book Club Network, in exchange for my honest review. This review has been posted on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, DeeperShopping, and Goodreads
A Date with Death was enjoyable in the action movie sort of way. Light and adventure packed. Meeker goes on quite a few adventures, most involving her partner Reese, and solves a mystery that could cost a man his life. And like in most action movies, the plot was truly improbable.
Things go way too well for Meeker. I don't want to give things away, but she solves a lot of problems far to easily. And the way she found the case was highly improbable as well. Reading a historical mystery, I had hoped for a bit more realism. I just found the whole thing way too hard to believe.
As I said, the book is like an action movie. If you enjoy movies with unlikely scenarios and tough heroines, you should like this.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review from the Book Club Network.
This first book in the series (In the President's Service) is a great read! I am so thankful that I was asked by The Book Club Magazine to read and review the first book in the series!! This is the perfect genre for me! I love the time period it is set in! I love the theme of the book, the style of writing! It is a 100% WIN for me! It has all the key components for THE GREAT NOVEL. Time Period, Classy Characters, FBI, Mystery & Intrigue, Spies & Foreign Agents, Christians & Lost searching for Answers.... I am so glad this is a series and I will be able to read more from these characters because I came to love them, just in the first book! It sucked me in and I read till 3:am to finish it! Thank you for this opportunity! Waiting for #2!
Fast paced, well written suspense story! The blurb of the book should be enough to get you intrigued. I love how the author infused humor with all the action and suspense. You feel the emotions with the character as she tries to free a man sentenced to death. She comes up against many obstacles and dangerous happenings while having to deal with a man she just met claiming to love her. Are the circumstances connected? You will have to read to find out. Great history mixed with government dealings – all make for a good mystery story. This was definitely a page turner and written so that you just had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next. I can’t wait for the next installment! Given book from bookfun.org for honest review.
I loved the book! Can’t wait for the next part. Once I started I couldn’t put it down. Took me close to 3 hours. The characters in the book work outstanding. They were all very believable characters. Helen Meeker is one tuff lady working for the President of the United States, kinda his right arm guy. She is trying to save a man on death row. Proving he is innocent is not easy . Especially since he says he is guilty. Why would a man want to die? Helen is determined to find out. Excellent book you like adventure you will love it. I know I am ready for the second part. Which you can sign up and get a new part of the series each month from TBCN.
Adventure and Intrigue This story is a wonderful beginning to a series that centers around the government and President's office. It is filled with lots of intrigue and nail-biting drama. The main character is very personable and knows her job well. There are lots of details and descriptions in the story that make it believable so the reader is quickly caught up in the excitement and mystery. The story is well planned and brings the reader to a satisfying conclusion while also leaving you wanting more from this character. I can't wait for the next adventure! I received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for my honest review
I really liked Helen Meeker in The Yellow Packard and she is back! She is a gutsy woman, a special investigator for President Roosevelt. That is because, much to Helen's irritation, Hoover allows only men to be FBI agents. Helen is on the task of saving a pastor from execution. Helen thinks he confessed to treason because the Nazi's have his daughter. This is a great little novel with lots of action. There is a bit of romance too. When the novel ends, this case is wrapped up but another presents itself. That's because this is the first in a serial set of stories. There is information in the book on subscribing to further stories. See my full review at http://bit.ly/1hGPAgy.
I absolutely loved this first episode of "A Date with Death". This is usually not the type of book I read. But I wanted to read it and don't have any regrets. I received this book free from bookfun.org for my honest review.
This episode was fast moving with a lot of details. It was so intriguing. I couldn't put it down. I had to find out what was going to happen next.
I can't wait for the next episode to read what happens next. If you are looking for a good book with suspense and little romance this is the book.
Normally this is not my type of book, but the cover and the short description of the book drew me in and I was pleasantly surprised. There is enough mystery, espionage, intrigue ,suspense and Nazi spies to keep you on your toes and wanting more. Helen Meeker is truly amazing; she is the ultimate female heroine.
I received a free copy of this book courtesy of The Book Club Network for my honest review.
An absolutely riveting book, which was very hard to put down even for a short break! Wonderful suspense, characters that you are sure are bad and then maybe not, political intrigue that rivals the best of them. All in all, worth every minute it took to read and I look forward to the second installment - which hopefully will resolve the cliff-hanger this book leaves you with. I received this ebook from The Book Club Network in return for my honest review.
I loved this Christian thriller. It kept my interest and. I can't wait for the next installment to come out. I received this book from the book club network for an honest opinion. Nice quick read. Flowed well.
I love this book(episode)! Helen is a strong female character, which I love! She has adventures, is smart, well respected – everything you want from your female lead in a book. I want more - I can’t wait to read the next episode! I was given this episode by bookfun.org for my honest review.
