SQUEEE!!!!! I absolutely LOVED this book!!!!!

I read it start to finish in one sitting because I just could not put it down. It was a sweet, sexy, gorgeous romance with a very unique twist to it. Just my kind of book!!! ♥

The story was about Brody and Alyssa. Brody had just spent the last five years in prison and was finally out and trying his best to get his life back in order. Alyssa on the other hand came from a life of luxury but had done her best to distance herself from it and spent all her time running a shelter she'd founded for abused and abandoned animals. Unfortunately when they met, they didn't exactly get off on the right foot...  he misjudged her at first by assuming that she was spoiled and needy like everyone else he knew who came from money, but he soon saw that she was in fact quite the opposite.

"She didn't bat her eyelashes or use feminine charms on me to get her way. In fact, she didn't ask for my help at all. She merely turned her back on me and stomped off to handle her problem on her own.

That, in and of itself, caught my interest because, in my experience… those that come from her sort of background don't do things on their own. The beg, plead, cajole, and simper to get what they want. If that doesn't work, they buy their way.

Not Alyssa though.

She hauled that fine ass off to her truck in an attempt to tackle her own problems on her own.

And I respected her for it."

They soon began spending a lot of time around each other when he decided to do his community service hours at her shelter. She saw right through his gruffness and to her he was another broken soul she could help heal and she was determined to make him feel whole again. Misunderstandings aside, they had a strong connection between them, and so began an absolutely gorgeous, deeply heartwarming romance...

He is all male… raw, powerful, magnificent… Brody is a good man that has suffered, yet he bears a noble presence even in the face of his tragic circumstances.

Yes, he is a good man.

Twisted and broken? Probably.

But a good man all the same.

Brody stole my heart!! I think I've just always had a soft spot for the brooding, protective, slightly tortured heroes -- something about them just melts my heart -- and this guy had had so many things go wrong in his life and yet still was so kind hearted that it was really impossible for me not to fall for him. His own self description though made me chuckle... "I'm a brooding introvert now, and I don't do flirty."

I also really loved Alyssa. It's always awesome when you genuinely like both the hero and heroine in the book you're reading and she was totally the kind of girl who I could easily see myself being friends with in real life. She wasn't a "princess in a tower", she took care of her own problems, stood up for herself, but also had the biggest, kindest heart you can imagine.

I wonder if he's interested... in anything, with me. Friendship? Sex? A relationship? I know I'm probably stretching on those last two, but Brody is someone that I'm fascinated with, and the fact he wears a cloak of hurt tightly around him makes me want to do something... anything, to make it better.

Despite their rocky start, they were actually a really wonderful match and it was incredibly heartwarming to see them together -- several scenes even brought tears to my eyes while others had me laughing over their hilarious banter. I loved seeing Brody find his way in life again and I loved than when he doubted himself, Alyssa believed in them enough for the both of them.

I loved that even though they faced hardships and situations that easily could have escalated badly, they always worked things out and kept pleasantly surprising me with how rationally they handled everything. It's just such a wonderful feeling to genuinely like I can respect the characters and their decisions.

Ooooh and also -- holy heart-melting epilogue!!!! What an original idea!!! Epic swoon!!!!

Honestly, I really just LOVED this book. I cared about the characters and was fully invested in their story, I loved the writing, and I just could not put the book down. It had a really wonderful balance of a unique and intriguing storyline, a swoony, heart-melting romance, crazy hot sex, but also really great character development, and a really nicely paced relationship (no insta-love here). All in all, it was a fantastic read!!

Rating: 4.5+ stars!! Can be read as a standalone.

PS -- Ok, so like I said, I read this book as a standalone even though it’s technically the second in a series of standalones. The first book is about Brody's identical twin brother and I've heard good things about it, but personally it was this story that I was dying to read and I thought the author did a fantastic job of filling in any blanks so I still felt fully connected to all the characters (and this is coming from someone who is really OCD about reading books in order so I promise it’s okay to read it on it's own).

And here's my casting for Brody. Just give him longer hair ;)

4 BRODY STARS

I'm really enjoying this series. This book was about Brody Markham, just recently released from prison. Brody had such a bright future with his first year of medical school under his belt when it all turned to hell. Brody's sweet, broken and now struggling to fit into his old life with his friends and family.

Alyssa Myers is one of his sister's BFFs and everything he detests in a woman. Or at least that's what he thinks.

”Being physically attracted to someone I despise is another hardship I don’t need to deal with.”

“There’s something about Brody that is carnally attractive.”

 photo MIAD_zps9df0571a.jpg

“Her simple beauty, her drive and determination…hell just her joy and zest for life, all appeal to me on a basic level.”

“Brody is sort of like a wounded animal. You never know how it’s going to go.”

 photo 7f33b8bbe93d3442d52fa8956a8a69ef_zps9fc7cb30.jpg

“Dropping to my knees, I sink my fingers into the waistband of her pants, clear past the elastic edge of her panties. I lean forward, placing a kiss on her stomach, which causes her to shudder.”

All around this was a sweet, feel good story. This group of friends from Nags Head are really growing on me.

“It is simply the most beautiful experience of my life, and I just kissed my soul goodbye for good.”

I am so glad I got my hand on Make it a Double. I always curious with Brody's story. He is really yummy... in brooding such way. And Miss Bennett really deliver. In her hand, the story is always simple, cheesy and on this book, heart warming. Brody is such a quite hero. He is noble in a way just caught in a very bad time and ugly accident.

Alyssa is such a sweet heroine. She is patience with Brody. She waits until Brody finally opens up to her and share his burden. Hence they share a strong romance connection. It is heart warming how Brody slowly reveal a layer of himself to his family and friends. Miss Bennett takes her time building the chemistry between these two.

Overall this is a pleasant story. I like it very much.

I am so happy I re-read this book. I felt so cozy and comfortable while reading it. Plus I just genuinely love these characters.

On this book, we follow Brody, Hunter’s twin, and Alyssa, one of Gabby’s best friends. He was recently released from prison after 5-years and Alyssa runs an animal shelter where he ends up volunteering. If you love animals, sweet romances, and just a bad boy vibe but good boy inside, I really recommend this one. The relationship stars as hate-to-love and their interactions had me addicted. I don’t think this book has a super unique touch, but my love for our main characters had me so invested.

Alyssa as the main character was so enjoyable, she is strong and witty, and she really cares about the people around her. Brody is just one of my cinnamon tortured souls. I do think that perhaps I would have wanted a bit of a much darker touch to his story and justification for all his reservation. I loved them as individuals, but much more as a couple. Their relationship was sweet and hot, full of understatement and great communication. And Brody sometimes is even quite an alpha-male but I just enjoyed it a lot, which doesn’t happen often.

Sadly I felt there was something missing to make it 5 stars. When the climax of the story came, it had so much potential to be something deeper, but it stays rather in the chick-lit side. I wanted a bit more of darkness and exploration of fear, but overall the romance was so cute.

I will surely continue my marathon re-read of this series because I really love this group of friends and how everyone finds love, especially because I remember the last book being my favorite.

4--Swoon Worthy--Stars!!!

Oh man, Brody....

Brody was perfection. He was sweet, he was sexy, he was damaged, he was perfect!

Brody's life was shattered after he went to prison. One day a college student aspiring to be a doctor. The next a felon tending bar at Last Call. Unsure where he fits in to the real world. Brody is broken. He's lost.

Alyssa runs in the same circles as Brody and his family. Brody thinks she a rich, stuck-up princess. And he tells her as much.

As part of his parole, Brody has to complete community service...which he does at The Haven, the non-profit animal shelter run by Alyssa. Brody sees that maybe Alyssa isn't the princess he thought she was.

There's an attraction between Brody and Alyssa. I loved the slow-build of their relationship. Brody was quick to apologize for his assumptions. I loved how honest and open Brody was with Alyssa.

There was a definite twist that I did not see coming. At all.

The aftermath of which bonded Brody and Alyssa. It changed things for him and their relationship.

There wasn't a lot of drama and angst. This was just a really sweet, feel good story.

This was my first book by this author. While this is book 2 in the series, it can be read as a standalone...as I did not read book 1. But, I'll definitely be checking out other stuff by this author. Really enjoyed this one.

"It is simply the most beautiful experience of my life, and I just kissed my soul goodbye for good.”

AHHH!! This was just downright gorgeous. This book is full of swoon, unbelievable levels of cuteness, a perfect couple and was just so darn heartwarming!! No really, I'm practically dancing on a cloud of rainbows and smiles right now. I'd like to see someone even try to wipe this smile off my face. For a sweet and light-hearted romance, I'd definitely recommend this book.

description

Alyssa has desired to steer away from her rich family and a life of luxury and instead live a humble life working at a non-profit animal shelter. Alyssa has dedicated her life to The Haven and considers herself down-to-earth, which is why it hurt so much when Brody called her a "snotty, rich bitch heiress". Brody is one of her best friend's brother but she hasn't spoken to him since the event and definitely doesn't plan to until there has been some apologies spoken.

Brody has only recently been released from prison after a five year sentence. He's lost everything and is struggling with reconnecting with the real world, which includes his family and friends. As community service, Brody chooses to help out a struggling Alyssa at her dog shelter. After seeing her work so hard, he realises that he has been wrong about her from the very beginning. The pair start to spend a lot of time together and with their newfound friendship, trust and chemistry; a relationship starts to blossom.

"I continue to search for a shooting star, but I never see one. Doesn’t matter… I have no need of wishes."

This is the second book in the Last Call series, but this is actually the first book I've ever read by this author. I didn't know anything about this book when I picked it up, but I was quickly filled in on all I needed to know. I never felt like I didn't understand a relationship or an event that happened in the last book and I easily became captivated with the story. This series definitely doesn't need to be read in order, but after finishing this book I'm so excited to hear the stories of the side characters. Actually, I want to binge read a heap of Sawyer Bennett's books because this one was just so addicting!

I loved both of the main characters in this book. It was a very character-driven novel and so the characters were well developed, realistic and completely loveable. Alyssa was a total badass of a character. She was kind and compassionate and so all of her relationships in the book (friendship and romantic) were meaningful and believable portrayals of relationships. The best thing about her, though, was the way she took charge. She took charge of her relationship with Brody and didn't hesitate to initiate their relationship. I loved this so much, too often I read about men taking control in a relationship and having to initiate the relationship first.

Brody stole my heart right from the beginning of the book and I just grew to love him more and more as the story progressed. He was brooding, a little bit of a tortured soul but he also had a heart of gold. He was protective of Alyssa and so darn sweet whenever they were together. I loved his transition between a tortured hero into a happier and more care free guy. Brody was quietly intense and I especially loved reading from his perspective.

He is all male… raw, powerful, magnificent… Brody is a good man that has suffered, yet he bears a noble presence even in the face of his tragic circumstances.

Yes, he is a good man.

Twisted and broken? Probably.

But a good man all the same.

I loved both of these characters but the best part was their relationship. Alyssa just wanted to care for Brody from the start and help him overcome his struggles. Although sometimes it was on the borderline of Alyssa "fixing" him (which I'm not fan of), it was heartwarming and sweet nonetheless. Their chemistry grew from the first time they spent time together at the shelter and only got better as the story progressed. Just thinking about their relationship makes me want to smile because it was just downright gorgeous. They were supportive, had a beautiful friendship as well as their romance and every moment they spent together made my heart swell. Plus, they definitely had their HOT times which even made me breathless! They were an all around great couple and were immediately added to my favourite couples list

This was a beautiful and feel good book that had a gorgeous love story. Brody and Alyssa had such a strong connection and it shone through every page of the book. I can't wait to read more from this author.

I am going to take care of this man. I'm going to guard his secret, I'm going to make him feel unbelievable pleasure, and then I'm going to make sure he knows that he's worthy of the best life has to offer.

4 'I love you, Brody' stars

This is the second book in the Last Call series, but is actually the first one I read, and it works well as a standalone. All of the characters are introduced well, with a bit of backstory provided to give the story extra depth, and I dove straight in and was easily swept up in the story.

Brody and Alyssa have known each other for years. Brody is the twin brother of Hunter from the book 1 - On the Rocks - and Alyssa is one of a trio of best friends along with Brody’s younger sister, Casey, and Hunter’s other half, Gabby.

Brody has recently been released from five years in prison. He is gruff and broody, and struggling to readjust back into this life. Alyssa is a rich heiress who has turned her back on the socialite lifestyle her parents want for her, and is instead following her passion and running a not-for-profit animal shelter. She has previously reached out to Brody and offered him work at her shelter as part of his community service, but he dissed her as being a ”snotty, rich bitch heiress, and so this book begins with them not on the best of terms, making for a great set up for them!

When Brody sees Alyssa in action at her shelter, he realises how wrong he was and, wanting to spend more time with her, he volunteers his time to help her at the shelter. Alyssa is wildly attracted to Brody, and while working together she sees him as the sweet but broken man he really is. And when he takes her into her confidence, the two of them grow close and the passion and UST that has been simmering between them from the beginning explodes into some epic hotness.

God, this book is hot. Hot, hot, hot!!! The smexy time is frequent and sizzling! But it’s meaningful as well, and the passion between them is a strong part of their relationship which so easily develops into something that becomes life changing for them both.

Brody's body continues to quiver as he holds me tight ... It is simply the most beautiful experience of my life, and I just kissed my soul goodbye for good.

I love these characters!! Alyssa is intelligent, sensible and hard-working, with a great sense of humour. She knows who she is, and she totally owns it, and I love her! And my beautiful, broken Brody absolutely stole my heart. He is struggling, but underneath and anger and the pain, he is an incredible man that just wants happiness and peace from the demons that haunt him.

She represents everything that could possibly be good in my life now, and while it scares the shit out of me, I’m helplessly drawn to it.

His story is a sad one, but I love the way he owns it. He made a mistake, he’s paid for it, and right or wrong, you have to respect him for the way he’s trying to put it behind him and move on. And I love the way that Alyssa was able to see past his surly exterior to the man underneath.

Brody is a good man that has suffered, yet he bears a noble presence even in the face of his tragic circumstances.
Yes, he is a good man.
Twisted and broken? Probably.
But a good man all the same.

As much as I enjoy a bit of angst, I also love it when authors trust enough in their story that they don’t have to throw unnecessary drama into it, and I was so relieved that this book is angst free with no stupid behaviour. It’s so refreshing just to sit back and revel in a love story without wanting to smack either of the main characters while reading. This is a beautiful romance that is totally functional. Yes, Brody and Alyssa both have some issues, but they talk about it openly, they are there for each other and are supportive and forgiving of each other’s mistakes. Bottom line, they want to be together, they don’t hide that fact and they work to make to happen, and I love that!

“We can take this slow”…
“See…that’s just it. I think I want to be overwhelmed. If last night is what overwhelming feels like, then I want that every night. It’s still just…unsettling. And you need to bear with me while I process this.”

There is some drama thrown in with psychotic exes, but it doesn’t interfere with the blossoming relationship, and although the storyline is predictable and got a bit cheesy at the end, I still enjoyed it.

I like the time spent with the extended group of characters. This is a close bunch, and I am looking forward to reading more books in the series and getting to know them better.

Hunter just shakes his head with a sly smile. “Dude…I don’t even know who you are anymore. Where did my surly, gloom-and-doom brother go to?”
“He got laid last night,” Alyssa pipes up, and I practically choke on my own tongue.
Turning to her, I say, “You did not just say that out loud?”
She grins back at my coyly, shooting a glance at Hunter, who is now laughing his ass off.

This is an easy read with a great mix of humour, drama, sex and romance, and characters that you’d love to know in real life. I really enjoyed this book, and look forward to picking up the next in the series.

Title: Make it a Double
Series:Last Call #2
Author: Sawyer Bennett
Release Date: April 21,2014
Rating:3.5 stars
Cliffhanger:No
HEA:

I was very excited to get a chance to read Brody's story. He's Hunter's twin from On the Rocks, the first book in the series. The anticipation for Brody's story was built up well in book one. He's a fun, outgoing guy who everybody loves and after a tragic event, is sent to prison and after parole returns to town never the same. He intrigued me. A man who is forever changed- a family man who now is pushing his family and friends away and can't seem to fit in quite like he used to. He's now dealing with some harsh demons and he doesn't know how to move on from his past.

Alyssa is the most kindhearted of the group of friends. She also comes from a very wealthy background and has money that would take care of her for the rest of her life if she didn't want to work, but she isn't selfish or entitled. She has a deep love for animals and started a no-kill shelter for dogs, cats, and horses which she runs almost exclusively by herself. She is just a genuine and easygoing person who anybody would want to know and be friends with. When she crosses paths with Brody for the first time, he judges her on his preconceptions of how spoiled and snobby he thinks rich people are and after offending her and hurting her feelings, they now avoid each other at all costs. They want nothing to do with each other, but when he unexpectedly spends the day with her at her shelter, he starts to see how badly he misjudged her.

Their feelings rapidly grow for each other and I was a little disappointed with the story from this point. I felt that their progression from dislike, to friendship, to deep feelings was too rushed and I didn't feel a connection with them like I was expecting to. I just felt like something was missing and their relationship could have used more of a build up. I enjoyed them together, but it was just good when it could've been great. Brody's reluctance to progress past friendship with her initially was due to his feelings of inadequacy over her wealth and his lack of it, his family's sure disapproval of him, and feeling like he didn't deserve her because of his past. This caused some great sexual tension built up the anticipation very well. I was rooting for them to get together and admit their feelings.

There was an added conflict with Alyssa's ex boyfriend. They dated recently, but she left him after a scary incident when he started choking her when he got angry. She avoids him and is a little nervous over the fact that he can't seem to take the hint that they are over. His stalking escalates throughout the book until he starts behaving dangerously. This a was pretty textbook stalker plot and pretty predictable but it was sweet to see Brody get protective and defend her when it was needed.

As usual, I was very satisfied with the sexual chemistry. Sawyer Bennett knows how to bring the heat and get your heart rate going. I will say, there were no complaints there.

Overall, it wasn't a bad read, but I was expecting a little more based on my enjoyment of the first book and the potential with the dark and brooding Brody. The story progression fel rushed and the suspense part involving the stalker was a bit predictable for me. But while it wasn't perfect, it still made for a quick and easy read that was still enjoyable.

The heroine talking about how achy her twenty-three year old body is already, the first person back and forth povs, and the other New Adult general traits (slightly overdone emotional angst and seriously, what is it with the always present abusive ex?!) have this not being my cup of tea. It's written well (if a little wordy and narrative, hero walks across room to unlock door and it was written along the lines of took three regular steps across room". I don't need such detail, lol) but I'm a thirty-three year old curmudgeon who can't with New Adult more often than not.

5+++ Beautiful Brody and Awesome Alyssa Stars

I love this series. The first book, On The Rocks, was a cracking start to it all. Now we have the second book about Brody and Alyssa. These two are such beautifully written characters. Brody made my heart hurt because he was so damaged but strong and ...Wow...Brody Markham has entered my top 5 Heroes list. Alyssa is one of the best heroines I have read about. Her strength and kindness and absolute determination to defend Brody was just breath taking. The heat between these two becomes apparent and is well developed through the story.
Finally...the EPILOGUE!!!! Just gorgeous! All round fantastic story.

Ex Con With a Beautiful Heart

I can't believe I haven't read this author before. I've seen her sport romances and have been intrigued, but it took her offering this book for free to get me to try her writing. And I'll definitely be back for more!

Brody Markham just finished a five year prison stint. He's so closed off to his family and friends that it seems like he's still imprisoned. But the love of a good woman might help coax him out of his shell?

Enter Alyssa Myers, owner of a no-kill animal shelter. She comes from wealth, and uses her fortune to save animals. Though Brody's sister is Alyssa's best friend, Brody thinks Alyssa's a snooty, lazy rich girl just like his ex-girlfriend.

It's not until Brody completes his community service hours at Alyssa's shelter that he sees she's hard-working, caring, and tough. Perhaps her toughness allows him to become a tad softer. I love the way Brody talks--he's straightforward and manly.

"Alyssa... I like you. A lot. I care for you, I worry for you, I respect you, and I lust after you. But I'm also broken and twisted, which means these feelings I have are going to be tainted. I don't want to hurt you."

Alyssa can't help but fall for this tall, kind, stoic man, especially when she learns his defining secret.

Brody's grip on my hips relaxes a bit as he cedes all the power to me. He turns everything over when he says, "Take care of me, Alyssa."

My heart feels like it constricts in on itself, then releases the pressure outward in a huge burst of warmth and tenderness.

I am going to take care of this man. I'm going to guard his secret, I'm going to make him feel unbelievable pleasure, and then I'm going to make sure he knows that he's worthy of the best life has to offer.

And Alyssa's great at following through on her word! Too bad both of them have exes from hell to make things interesting.

The setting of the Outer Banks, North Carolina is lovely. I've been there once and I always love beach towns.

This book felt like a perfect read. Right now it's FREE! Try it for yourself.

Diary by Alicia Keys

The perfect book to end the year! I was a little worried I wouldn't like this book but I connected with the story from the first chapter. It was almost like this book was written from a different author. Everything that didn't work for me or was wrong in the first book wasn't absent. It was everything I love in a book.

Brody is my favorite guy in the group so far with his broody yet incredibly sexy self. Learning his story and getting to know Alyssa was probably my favorite thing about this book. Nothing was rushed, they get to know each other before jumping to the I love yous. Everything just clicked for me.

The only thing I didn't like was the drama at the end. It felt just a little bit unnecessary but other then that this book was perfect. I'm really looking forward to reading the next book!

This book was amazing. I mean, I read it in one day, so it must have held my attention pretty well. Brody's story was heartbreaking, even more than you can possibly imagine. I loved every bit of his cold and broody exterior. Alyssa was the exact opposite. She was warm, sweet and giving. Perfect for each other. I really enjoyed The Haven and how his community service work with her helped open him up more. Even she had issues with her past, regarding a crazy ex. That provided some very tense and dramatic moments. As did his ex coming back into town. Despite all the turmoil swirling around them, they built an amazing bond. It was wonderful to read. I loved every word.

Infinitely better than the prequel, but that super cheesy epilogue ruined everything. Ugh.
It's a fun read but the characters are having a bit too much sex. Man, there is a sentence I'd never thought I'd say. Basically every time they're together they end up banging each other. Good for them, boring for the reader. But yeah, still a gazillion times better than the prequel, the hero is not a generic NA douche and the heroine is not a hot mess controlled by her hormones or whatever.

I realize now the review is a bit negative, but I did enjoy the book.

Brody spent six years in jail after an accident took someone’s life. Returning home from his time in prison has left him a little cold towards the family that has waited for this day. Brody hasn’t been able to open himself up to his family or face what the six years away cost all of them.

Alyssa is nothing like he pictured her as being. Giving up the lifestyle of the wealth her family ties allows, her life revolves around The Haven, the no-kill shelter that means everything to her. The place that Brody eventually finds himself at, the community service part of his parole, but honestly it far more about Alyssa than the requirement of his parole that keeps him there.

Brody and Alyssa’s relationship changes when she finds out his secret. One that he’s been carrying for six years. The fact that he can now share this with her shows Brody a life he never thought he could possess after being sentenced to prison.

I was worried that I’d struggle with this series mostly because I read it out of order. Sure plenty of authors will say these types of series can be read as stand alones but I always worry that too much of the story will be exposed by failing to read them in order. With The Last Call Series, I started with book three. It was apparent immediately after starting the series that I’d go back to the start – so I did skim over the parts that referenced the characters that came before to avoid ruining the story. But I think even given the knowledge of certain parts of this story – I was still able to enjoy it and get lost in it.

I simply adore the style that this author has. The writing is often flawless and the story always holds you attention. There is drama, and with this particular there was a touch more to their story that worked seamlessly with the overall plot. I can’t stop myself from simply devouring everything this author writes. Feel good romance that hits the spot every damn time. I wish I discovered this author sooner, but better late than never.

Loved it!!! 5++++ stars!!

I knew after reading On the Rocks that there would be a book about Hunter's twin brother who went to prison for 5 years for murder. That he was, deep down, a good guy because he had been in fricking medical school when it had happened. That he was damaged and had some incredible bitterness and a huge wall around him.

Brody Markham's book was incredibly moving, emotional and sizzling hot! It was a surprise for me, however, to fall in love with the heroine too! This was my favorite heroine I think I've read about all year! I was tearing up within the 25% point in this story when Alyssa cared for a weak old dog, Jethro. I think that's when Brody's hateful attitude toward Alyssa started to thaw too.

Alyssa is really a loving and generous soul, and when his past comes back to haunt him, Alyssa inadvertently finds out a secret that changes everything between her and Brody.

I am going to take care of this man. I'm going to guard his secret, I'm going to make him feel unbelievable pleasure, and then I'm going to make sure he knows that he's worthy of the best life has to offer.

This was such a beautiful, perfect, romantic, steamy story that I'm putting it on my favorites shelf and "deserves to be re-read" shelf! This is a book where you'll need a box of tissues and a spare set of panties!

3.25 Estrellas!

What is a hero? For many of us, when we think of a hero we think of crime-fighting icons with superhuman powers and skin-fitting apparel (Yes, especially Henry Cavill in his dark blue Superman tights.) But what about the guy who has the super-human capacity to love and sacrifice? In my book, that too is a definition of hero. Meet Brody Markham. Wounded, he is just returned from prison. He vacillates between wanting to be left alone and wanting to be back as a part of his family. He's back in his home town, and he wants to be connected to his past but uncertain how he can move on.

In comes Alyssa Meyers into his life. Alyssa is best friends with Brody's sister-in-law. Despite growing up in a privileged home, she rejects that lifestyle as cold and uncaring. Alyssa is full of life and pours all of her love and care into her animal rescue, The Haven. Anyone who is dedicated that much to animals surely has much love to give.

This is what draws the two together. And it is beautiful. It is ferocious. It is some of Sawyer Bennett's best work. She has a keen ability to tap into a character's nobility, whether it is standing up for discarded animals or protecting the family. At the end, I applaud our characters' sacrifices and sigh at their love story.

IN A NUTSHELL: I love this Last Call series. I love the setting. For me, it's almost a character unto itself. I adore the characters. I am entangled in their stories and I want to read more!

Love, Love, LOVED this one!! This has to be my favorite of all of the Sawyer Bennett books that I have read and believe me, I have read a lot. I have to say, I still don't know if I am interested in Gabby and Hunter's story, even though I like them as secondary characters in this story. Brody was just AMAZING! I don't even know what else to say. I just loved him, and I also loved Alyssa. She was a wonderful and loving person. Such a sweetheart and perfect for Brody! I adored their relationship and can't wait to see more of them! Also, I am hoping that Savanna and our sexy policeman might get a book?!? HINT HINT!!!

Hands down this is my absolute favorite Sawyer Bennett novel. Which is really saying something because let's face it: I love ALL of her books! After finishing On the Rocks, I could not wait for Brody's story. He is so withdrawn and shuts the world out and I desperately wanted to see him happy. I knew it would not be an easy road, as serving time changes a person, but I had NO idea how much Brody sacrificed and did. He will go down as one of my favorite male heroes of all time after reading his story.

Pacing: I loved the pacing. I felt like everything fell into place exactly as it should. The romance wasn't rushed, we didn't reach the climax too quickly, and we had a good amount of build up to make for a really great story.

Storyline: We finally get inside Brody's head and it is a hard place to be! He is not the same man as he was before he went to prison. He is stoic, distant, and does not show emotion. He wears a mask of indifference, separating himself from others. His siblings, Hunter and Casey, are glad their brother is home but miss the way he used to be.

When he first interacts with Alyssa, one of Casey's best friends, it is not pleasant. He is rude and inconsiderate, passing judgment on her based on the fact she comes from money. It's obvious his disdain runs much deeper and has nothing to do with HER, but what he thinks she represents. Alyssa is hurt all the same. After seeking out Hunter for help, Alyssa ends up running into Brody instead, who reluctantly offers to help her. However, seeing Alyssa do manual labor and how much she does on her own for her non profit animal shelter he realizes maybe she's not the spoiled heiress he accused her of being. He decides to volunteer at her shelter to fulfill his community service after all and the more time they spend together, the more they realize they can't stop thinking about one another. Brody and Alyssa will have to decide if they can have a relationship together and if it can withstand their pasts trying to interfere with their future. Bennett will surprise you with some of the secrets revealed and will leave you with the hope that these two can find happiness together.

Characters: Watching Brody come out of his shell and learn to trust and love Alyssa makes this a beautiful romance. Underneath that hardened exterior lies a selfless, incredible man who really got the short end of the stick because he was young and naïve. He is a proud man and as much as he desires Alyssa, he doesn't think it would work between them because they come from different worlds.

Alyssa is such a sweet, gentle soul and there isn't anyone who is more perfectly suited for Brody. She is a determined woman filled with compassion. She is there for him after finding out about his secret. She allows him to remember what it's like to joke, tease, and just feel comfortable again. She sees the good in him and not only cherishes him, but believes in him- something he hasn't had anyone do in a long time.

Gabby, Hunter, and Casey are all back and I loved seeing them again. Gabby has really worked her way into Brody's heart and he is really protective of his 'little sister'. I also love Gabby and Casey's friendship with Alyssa too. We are introduced to Brody and Alyssa's exes and I could not stand them at all. One is plain crazy and the other is desperate to get back what was once lost.

Final Thoughts: I loved the direction Sawyer took this story. Finally we have a story where the MC's overcome their obstacles together and stand by each other no matter what. Bennett didn't add unnecessary angst and drama to keep you engaged- there was no need- the storyline she has created sells itself. If you are looking for an epic romance filled with compassion, tenderness, and all consuming love and understanding, this is the book for you. Brody and Alyssa's relationship is seriously hot and steamy, and made me long for a Brody of my own.

So, where to start? Okay, here it is. It's kind of a rant, so get ready to have your eyes brushed clean.

The prologue. I don't know what's the point of it. I mean, I get Brody seems sweet and all, but I guess the preceding of it would be something for the couple. But yeah, I didn't see that coming.

Brody. So if the purpose of prlogue was for Brody to be sweet and then at the start he comes off as this introverted asshole to make me see the difference? Well, yeah. All there is is brooding actually that even if he seems joking, its kind of hard for me to spot it. I think I didn't get him, whatever this whole secret he's been holding on, I still didn't get that connection with him. I know coming out of prison will make you a different person, but hell, I didn't know what he experienced there. I think I wanted to see the glimpse of the hard stuff he had to endure to make me feel something for him. But all there is is the narration of how hard it is to integrate once again to society. And I didn't even experience or have a front row seat of how hard it was.

Alyssa. Alyssa is a heiress. A rich woman because of her parents wealth and decided it would be better to spend her days in a town with the shelter she built. I don't get it with this rich people. I mean they are privileged enough to have this money and bitch about because hell, they were given money they just don't want to live the life that accompanies with it. No, she'd rather spend it somewhere else. I mean okay. Whatever. But see, I thought shelter needs at least 2 person to run it and with her volunteers, I don't know. I don't get why she just wouldn't hire someone to assist her considering she have money to burn.

So, the whole Brody is judgmental and he called Alyssa a snobby heiress whatever. I'm confused. They have been like hanging out before, not close but I think one you could consider friendship. And then the downright calling her that. I don't get it. Just because she is rich he downright said that to her to create animosity? I know he was an asshole after the prison but seriously?

Okay, the shelter. Yes, its an animal shelter but this movie or book comes to mind. I know, different circumstances but yeah, I can't get that out of my mind so sue me.

Also, I hated the narrating stuff. Bores me to death. Seriously. The story is so passive for me giving me that oo-kay feeling but add the whole issues I've got? Yeah, you get it. Makes me frustrated. Plus the story has that predictable feel for me.

It saddens me to give this rating since I am a fan of the Author with her Legal Affairs Series. But I can't help it. I can only continue reading to the end for the sake of finishing the book. It doesn't give me pleasure and I have given so many chances. But what can I do? I don't want it to nag me that I haven't finished the book. I'd still pick up again and it will just frustrate me even more if I dnf it.

This was a nice, well-written romance with a hot, broody, damaged, protective, romantic Brody and kind, caring, sweet Alyssa. After Brody realises his prejudices were wrong he gives his feelings for Alyssa a chance and then their relationship goes rather fast, a little bit too fast for my liking... Further except from a shitty ex-girlfriend showing up shortly and a stalking ex-boyfriend we get a wonderful romance but I prefer a little extra in my reads… Some more suspense, drama, … But those are personal preferences. I really did enjoy this book and am looking forward to read more from this author.
