Doogie Horner is the author of This Might Hurt a Bit, Some Very Interesting Cats Perhaps You Weren’t Aware of, Everything Explained Through Flowcharts, A Die Hard Christmas, and other books. His comedy album A Delicate Man was an AV Club staff pick. He won over a hostile NYC audience on America’s Got Talent and is a frequent guest on Doug Loves Movies.
This was weird and fun and everything in between. Reading this as an adult gave me a sense of nostalgia for those old Cartoon Network shows like Dexter's Laboratory. The Adventures of Invisible Boy doesn't take itself too seriously and that's what makes it most enjoyable. Though quite simplistic in it's development, I'll definitely be checking out the next book in the series.
My daughter gave it 5 starts , but for me personally it was a 4 at best. Dexter’s Laboratory vibes 1,000% with partial PowerPuff art style- I even imagined his dialogue to be in his voice. Mad villain scientist meets misunderstood kid with solid story telling.
This was SO FUN! And I loved the illustration style - such a wife variety! What happens when you combine kids and invisibility?! You get a super villain and a superhero! I’d definitely be a super hero! Can’t wait for the next one!
Fun graphic novel about a boy who moves to a new school on the day or the science fair and, along with another classmate, is turned invisible. One uses his invisibility to be a hero and the other to be a villain. Over the top but cute, and I agree with the reviews that say it’s very Cartoon Network-esque.
Read this book with my 6 and 4 year old daughters and was impressed with the plot of this graphic novel. Usually I find graphic novels lacking in character development but this one was good
In Help!
Eerder verschenen This Might Hurt A Bit en A Die Hard Christmas. Daarnaast kun je op Youtube beelden terugkijken van twee shows die hij heeft uitgebracht als standup comdedian, Dad Max en A Delicate Man gemaakt, waarvan sketches op YouTube te bewonderen zijn.
Help!
Stanley isn't looking forward to his first day of school. His plan to act invisible doesn't go well as his teacher includes him in the School Science Fair.
His project is lack-lustre as he chucks something together with the art supplies he has been given, but his sister has put something together super-quick which looks amazing, but somehow looks a little familiar.
Stanley checks out the other Science Exhibits which make him even more embarrassed about his entry. One kid called Gene is making a fuss about his project - a stain remover. Boring... thinks Stanley. But what happens next is anything but.
By the end of the day, Stanley has won a prize, wrecked a young scientist's display and become invisible! Cool! This is more like it! Stanley can do what he likes without teachers, parents or his big sister telling him he can't.
Being invisible is awesome... for a while. But when he learns there is a strong possibility he might stay that way, he knows he must do everything to get back to his worried family. They can't understand how he just vanished. He must find the mad scientist kid called Gene who invented the invisibility potion, and get him to change him back.
But Gene is suddenly invisible too and having his own fun. Unlike Stanley, it's not for good.
Can Stanley find Gene, get back to normal, help a stray cat, and make a new friend too? Only more experiments, quick thinking, a smelly cat and his chucked-together project can help.
A full colour full-of-fun graphic novel.
This is the 1st episode in this series. Stanley is the new kid in class and isn't impressed when his new teacher makes a fuss about having him join in the School Science Fair. He'd rather be invisible. The way this happens isn't new but has hilarious consequences.
Stanley enjoys this sudden change and dubs himself Invisible Boy. He uses his new skills to do good - all the while as another boy who invented the invisibility potion chooses to be baaaad.
This makes a nice contrast for the storyline and there is an exciting battle of good vs evil / Stanley vs Gene with more freaky inventions, and entertaining results.
The story is wrapped up tidily until the last page when it seems they haven't solved all their problems after all...
find Graphic novels difficult. I want to like them because the children absolutely love them - and as a TA in school I am actively trying to get more of them in all age groups. Although they will read anything we are able to get. Some I've thought were excellent others not really my thing - for me this is pretty good because it is properly funny! I know it will be off the shelf straight away next Wednesday morning!
Before we meet Stanley we see another boy - a boy in a science lab in his home... Stanley and his family have moved house. and he does not want to go to his new school. He doesn't want to be the new boy (even though his sister,Nico, really wants to go), he can't even find sensible clothing because they haven't unpacked! At the bus stop there's a boy, Gene, with a science bottle filled with liquid on a floaty disc...it's for the science fair at school. Stanley is told by the teacher to make something out of junk to exhibit! He isn't happy with his model and goes to look around. He sees the boy from the bus stop but when he shows his invention the rag with the stain on disappears too. Stanley decided to look under the table for the cloth....but he knocks off the bottle...and they both become invisible! At first Stanley thinks this is great...but when he goes home Nico thinks he's a ghost! They're all worried about him but can't see him. He has to find the boy. However, Gene thinks it's great; he's been doing horrible things to everyone and they don't know who it is and he definitely doesn't want to make an antidote! Because he's Unseen Gene, Supervillain! The rest of the book tells of their journey to make an antidote - via a fight, lots of bubbles and more ghostly goings on!January Thanks to Kiran at Scholastic for this advance copy which is released 4th January
Stanley is the new kid in town—and he arrives at his new school just in time for the annual science fair...which Stanley is terribly unprepared for. It’s the middle of the school year, and everyone already knows each other. How’s he supposed to pull together a fantastic science project AND make friends?! If only he could just disappear, all his problems would be solved. Fortunately—or unfortunately?--when classmate Gene’s science project goes awry, Stanley and Gene both become invisible. Gene decides to use his new power to exact revenge. Can Stanley find a way to stop him?
This graphic novel is filled with fun, adventure, and lots of laughs.
This is a very short, funny graphic novel. Stanley is nervous to start a new school, in the middle of the year, on the day of the science fair. Gene’s parents don’t want him to make any more inventions, especially since they always go wrong. When Gene’s stain remover turns both boys invisible they both go on adventures. This leads them to Gene’s lab where they have an “intense” fight and find a way to work together to create an antidote, or do they? I really think that kids will like this graphic novel series and can’t wait to read the next one.
Stanley doesn't expect his first day at a new school to go well, but even he couldn't have predicted being made invisible and squaring off against an equally-invisible supervillain! However, as with most stories, there is more to this one than first meets the eye. Stanley's ability to use his invisibility for good to change the world in small ways is both hilarious and heart-warming. The art is clean and crisp and adds dimensions to Stanley's story. I look forward to seeing his next adventure.
My first graphic novel! Not sure why, but I’ve avoided them. Since I’ll be teaching fourth grade in the fall, I decided to read all the sunshine state books, and there are a couple of graphic novels. They are fast reads for adults. They’re just difficult to read aloud to children, but I’m glad they’re there for students who need a good solid read. Good lessons in this invisible friendship tale! Kind of reminded me of my comic book days.
Boy gets accidentally soaked in invisible solution. Superhero hijinks ensue.
This book is easy to recommend. The story is funny and fast paced. Horner's art is quite good; there's a comic strip-esque quality to the panels (made me think of Calvin and Hobbes) that's quite effective.
(4☆ Would recommend) Cute story. The illustrations are colorful & engaging. My 6-year-old son really enjoyed this book. I liked the story arch in Unseen Gene's character. This book provided a great opportunity for my son & I to talk about the difference between bad guys that are truly evil & bad guys that make bad choices because they are misunderstood. It was a great conversation.

What a fun graphic novel! When Stanley accidentally spills a stain remover on himself and another student at the Science Fair, he becomes invisible! The story includes a cheese smelling cat sidekick and a robot that comes to life, as well as a super duper villain. Kids are going to love reading this graphic novel. I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment!
This quick and fun graphic novel does a good job with keeping the plot moving and the jokes coming. The character development is not very deep and the art uses bold colors and lines. Great for reluctant readers.
Quick, fun graphic novel for ages 8-12. As an adult, I say it was really cute. Kids wouldn't say that, but it's funny, has cool gadgets and inventions, good characters, and a new friendship from enemies story. A really great cat, too.
Cute elementary-aged graphic novel about a boy who accidentally becomes invisible due to a mysterious potion from another kid in his class, who's a bit of a mad scientist. Very Dexter's Laboratory! Nice friendship theme at the end too!
New kid wants to make friends, science fair first day at new school wins because recycled stuff, mad scientist neighbor kid jealous, and stain remover actually makes them both invisible. Amusing and creative. Cheese cat!
My 10 year old son read this and said "it was a good book that made me laugh". When the character was invisible was really funny. He is very eager to read the second book! He rates it 5 stars.
