Picked this up last week and have so far made 1 and 1/2 projects from it. I'm a complete crochet novice aside from following an online tutorial to learn the slip knot, single crochet and double crochet in the days before ordering this book.
While the projects went well in the most part I do think there are some oversights in the instructions which make them slightly difficult to understand and meant I required outside help from online tutorials.
I made the 'coral bag' and struggled when reaching the finishing row. The instruction reads 'work 5dc into each loop'. The key translates this as 'double crochet' and there's a guide on how to do it - so far so good. However it was left up to my interpretation as to whether this meant 1. work a new row of chains and then do double crochet from them, or 2. Fasten off (not in the instructions) and then use a new working yarn on my last row of loops to make them double crochet.
It turned out to be the latter. After some false starts and do overs. There were no pictures of the finishing row close up to help me work out what to do either.
Then at the end of the project, the instructions are to join the two sides of the bottom of the bag using a needle or slip stitch. I opted for slip stitch because that's what I was practicing, but there were no instructions on how to work this into the bag to join the sides, as in, which loops to pick up. I ended up going on YouTube to find a tutorial on joining granny squares with slip stitch.
I really need idiot proof beginner instructions and this has been a bit hit or miss. Hopefully this will help anyone in the same pickle I was in!
