Broken Truce

Rate this book
Life isn't turning out the way that Deeta thought it would. With the Lewises defeated and peace between the tribes, she'd believed that the dark times were in the past.
However troubles between the tribes continue and the Andak council has selected Tom as their ambassador and chief spokesman to the other tribes.
Deeta knows that there is still much resentment against the Andak, that Tom is in danger every time he leaves the safety of Andak city.
Struggling with her own complicated feelings against the tribe that she is now a part of, Deeta tries to ignore the changing attitudes growing within her.
Then Tom is betrayed and with the whole City thrown into great danger, Deeta finds that reality can't be ignored forever...

Hi everyone!

My name is Dee Dee, I'm twenty seven and I live in a beautiful part of Devon, England, with my family.

That introduction made me feel a little bit like I was on Blind Date!!!

As our house is in the countryside we have some unusual neighbours including chickens, ducks, geese, pheasants, a cat (that adopted us when we moved in!!!) and some koi. I also have a very long suffering younger sister, Jingle, who is a brilliant guitar player. She keeps me supplied with coffee and brownies, generally making sure that the Chant household doesn't grind to a halt.

I really hope you enjoy reading my books as much as I enjoy writing them.
I love reading and have a kindle, I enjoy almost every genre; if there is adventure and romance I'll be there with coffee and a brownie! I also like to cook and wear impractical high heels! You may also have noticed that I have a horrible addiction to exclamation marks!!!

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Deeta and Tom have finally realized or admitted that they are in love with each other. Tom has cared for Deeta for a long time now and has tried to take care of her and keep her safe. Deeta has finally found out a lot of the secrets that Tom has been hiding about himself from her and their tribe. But when she finds out what he has been hiding it makes no difference to her because she knows the person that he truly is and not the person that he tries to make other people think he is Deeta can see right through him. She can see that is doesn't matter what tribe he comes from and it doesn't change who he is nor does it make his heart any different.

Deeta's dream of going outside has finally come true. She has finally got to go outside of the building that she grew up in and was born in. She has found out that not all of the horror stories that she has heard about the other tribes in the city are not as bad as she thought. Some of the tribes are she as good as her own tribe but she has also learned that there are some tribes out there that are just as bad as hers is good. Some of the horror stories that she has heard are just as bad as she has been told and even worse.

Deeta's sister Janny met one of Tom's brothers Ryder and fell in love with him just as quick of not quicker than Deeta did Tom. I mean Deeta has known Tom a lot longer than Janny has known Ryder but sometimes it doesn't take someone very long at all to know that they love and care for another person. I am sure that it would be a lot different if you lived in a world like Deeta and Janny has grown up in. Everything would move at a different pace and in different ways as well.

Deeta and Janny are both now married to an Andak brother and after living outside the walls of the building they grew up in and meeting other people from the different tribes in the city they have come to realize that all of the stories that they have been told all their lives about the people are not true. They have learned after meeting these people and getting to know them that they are just like them. Their only desire is to live out their lives as they wish and not like someone else has told them they must. They have come to the conclusion that everybody is the same no matter how they live or how they believe. Tom and Ryder make a trip to visit the Marshall tribe to see how they are coming along with the rebuilding of the destruction that the Andak tribe made when they were attacked believing that they had taken Tom prisoner. Tom and Ryder thought that they would be safe making a trip through the city with the girls now after all the time that has passed since the attack but they failed to realize that not all could be trusted.

When they are on their way back to Andak city their group is attacked. They are surrounded and outnumbered so therefore they are caught and captured. Tom and Ryder both know that they cannot allow their wives to be taken by this tribe to their homes. This tribe is not like any of the other tribes and will harm the girls and more than likely kill them.

Will Tom and Deeta make it out alive? Will Ryder and Janny make it out as well? Will Janny and Ryder's baby make it too? Will Janny carry the baby to full term? Will she be strong enough to survive the Lewis tribe? Will Tom, Ryder, Deeta and Janny all hang on to the goodness that is in their hearts or will they become some else after everything that they have to go through?

Have you read the Broken City novels? If you have not then I highly recommend that you do and I would also suggest that you start with book #1 Broken City and then read book #2 Broken Truce. If you love reading books that are hard to put down then the Broken City Series is a great series to read and not one that you want to miss out on. D.D. Chant will have you on the edge of your seat hanging on waiting to find out what is going to happen next. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for my stop on the blog tour at Donnie Darko Girl.

BROKEN TRUCE was released three years after the first book, BROKEN CITY, and I could tell the difference in Chant's plotting. The story and characters have grown exponentially from the first book, and there's much more action with intense moments in this installment of the series.

What I liked
I really liked the plot of BROKEN TRUCE with all of the action and intensity. The synopsis gives away very little as to what happens in this book, and I was taken by surprise in the best way possible. In writing this review, I decided I should stick with how the book made me feel and what I thought about it rather than possibly giving any of the plot away, especially if you haven't read book one yet. Let's just say I was invested in the plot and needed to know what would happen next.

Many of the characters have grown on me, including Deeta and Tom. I warmed up to both of them much more this time around, and I think part of that is they've become familiar to me and understand their personalities and ways of thinking better. I even began liking Jayden, one of the Andak brothers, and hoping for more scenes with him. He's brave in wanting to do the right thing even if he has to stand up to his brothers to get it done. I admire that about him.

What didn't work for me
As with the first book, BROKEN TRUCE also has many spelling and grammatical errors. The biggest mistakes I ran into were run-on sentences and misuse of pronouns (ex. using "you're" instead of "your"). I don't usually comment on this sort of thing because I mostly review ARCs (Advanced Reader Copies) which have kinks to be worked out before being published for sale, and this book is an ARC. However, the first book had these types of mistakes, too, and it has been out for three years which is plenty of time to fix these issues.

There are quite a few shifts in POV in BROKEN TRUCE. There's Deeta's POV in first person and Tom's POV in third person, which was also the case with the first book. Again, I found myself wishing Tom's POV was also in first person. Unlike the first book, BROKEN TRUCE has several different characters' POV's, which ended up confusing me at times. They're all in third person, too. It ended up making the story a bit jarring plus gave me a lot of characters to keep track of without much to help me differentiate them from one another - mostly, the Andak brothers.

Overall
The only two issues keeping me from giving BROKEN TRUCE a higher rater than three stars are the grammar/spelling and multiple POV's. The plot is excellent, and the action kept me excited enough to want to keep reading. The characters have grown since the first book, and they've grown on me as well. This series is a different kind of dystopian than anything I've read before, and I think if you want to read a post-apocalyptic, dystopian novel without plagues or zombies, then give this series a try.

Review for Broken Truce

5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the first book and gave it a big 5 star rating and this book didn't disappoint, actually I think I enjoyed it even more that the first!

At the end of the first book everything seemed to be all okay again, as much as it can be in a Dystopian world. The start of the second is a few months on, with Deeta and Tom married as well as her sister Jan and Ryder. And things are not as okay as Deeta hoped they would be with the tribes back to not trusting each other and conflict being likely.

In this book we see Deeta and Tom as a married couple and I really loved reading about them. We only saw a glimpse of what they would be like as a couple in the first book so I really enjoyed reading them as a couple and they are as hopelessly in love as I thought they would be.
Tom is just as protective as ever and wanting to help everyone and try and mend relationships between the tribes so there is a better world for everyone. And Deeta is the strong women behind every great man!

We also see a lot more of Jan and Ryder which was also a joy to read. I love Ryder, nearly as much as I love Tom. He is just as protective and caring but he also has a lighter personality and brings a bit of laughter to the book.

Even though this is a shorter book there is still plenty of action, within the first half of the book I had already shed a few tears during a scene I didn't expect to happen. It was probably even more fast paced than the first as the drama was compacted into fewer pages, keeping me immediately hooked, so much so that I easily finished this book within a day.

The ending is a lot more open ended this time with many issues still not solved meaning I'm waiting not so patiently for the next book which I know will be as good as the first two so I can't wait to get stuck into it.

A continuation of a brilliant story with loveable characters that I can't wait to continue on with.

The second book in the Broken City series was action packed. There was definitely more of a fast pace and also more violence in this book compared to the first. Where Broken City did a lot of building Broken Truce thrust you into the middle of a war zone, almost literally. Deeta, Tom, and Jan find themselves captured behind enemy lines of the Lewis Tribe and desperately have to find a way to escape.

In Broken Truce we meet several new characters, tribes, and families. Some without a doubt are despicable, some kind and some are teetering the border between the two. We learn that the Lewises are far more criminal then the hated Andaks and that the divisions between the tribes that for a small time had managed to be peaceful have become increasingly strained. Deeta grows in this novel, she is no longer sheltered but facing violence that she has never seen before, her view begins to change and we see Deeta form what would be some of her first moments of anger and disdain towards another group, even a growing desire for revenge. I am sure that this battle between Deeta’s new experiences and what is in her heart will continue to be a constant struggle and I look forward to seeing how it will manifest in her character. Another new individual in the story that I was most intrigued by was Matt from the Lewis tribe, I still haven’t quite figured him out yet and I’m sure Chant did this on purpose. His character is quite a mystery and it seems his past will be unraveled throughout the series. I do love his interaction with Tom, they have some of the best dialogue in the story. Overall I enjoyed the second book in the Broken City series, my only quip is that I felt like the ending was kind of abrupt and it didn’t seem to end at a proper point in the story I felt like I came crashing into a wall when I got to the end which is not how I felt with the ending of the first book. I am totally looking forward to how this series will progress!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Broken Truce picks up a few months after Broken City leaves off. Deeta got her HEA, but it’s not turning out the way she hoped. Because Tom has had the most interaction with the other tribes, he is often sent out into the city, which is still dangerous, to mediate disputes between tribes. Deeta is constantly worrying about his safety. What happens when your HEA isn’t as happy as you’d hoped?

I loved this book even more than Broken City. I loved that we were told the story from multiple POV’s. Deeta and Tom make the perfect couple. In fact, I love all the couples. They are each unique in their own ways. I don’t want to give too much away, so I’m not going to go into anymore detail about the couples. There was a ton of suspense, action, and adventure. We met new characters and had insight into our favorites from Broken City. As I was reading, I kept looking and noticing that all of a sudden I was at 95%. Wait a minute, it can’t end now. I read a little further, 98%. Holy c#$p, how’s this going to end? 100%, NO!!! It can’t end like that. I need to know what’s going to happen. Needless to say, I am anxiously awaiting the next book. It can’t come soon enough. Oh, and again, the writing was superb. Very easy-to-read and fast-paced.

Ok…on one hand, I’m like “Oh man… the story of the Andak’s, the Lewis’s and the remaining smaller tribes just keeps getting better & better!”, but on the other hand, “Aaaack! What’s gonna happen to Deeta & Tom? What’s behind Max’s hatred of the Andak’s? Will Lassie get help in time to save Timmy who has fallen down a well?”…ok, ok… not so much the last one. But why…. why D.D. Chant did you suck me into this amazing world of action, adventure and intrigue…then leave me hanging…wanting, needing…more?!?

Oh… I know what you’re thinking, “Drama Much?, I just can’t help myself! This book series is just that good! And you’re totally unprepared for it. So, you’re just reading along…getting to know Deeta & Jan, Tom & Ryder and the rest of the Andak brothers; before ya know it…you’re part of the story, part of the conflict and understand that there are so many dynamics going on and the struggle for survival leads to many different routes that supersede right and wrong. At first, it seems so easy to pick out the “heroes” and the “villains”… but as we learn more about the individuals of each group and the events that have shaped their lives thus far…the line between hero and villain starts to blur, because nothing about this world is easy.

So…please, please….don’t make us wait too long for the next book, cause patience is definitely NOT my best virtue!

Broken Truce by D.D. Chant
Broken City Book 2
Deeta's story continues as she lives in the Andak compound, so different from the world she was use to when at the Clarks. She's married to Tom Andak and he continues to try to work for peace among the different tribes. Unrest continues though.

Deeta has always been protected from the real world but not now. Returning from a trip to the Marshalls compound they meet up with the worst of enemies, the Lewises. She has to face the real world, death.

This was a tough read. War in real life does not pick and choose who it takes and who is left behind. Neither did D.D. Chant in this book. I found myself wanting to crouch and hide with Deeta, to lash out against the enemy and the uneasy feeling of knowing when you are outnumbered and helpless. And thankfully there were things to celebrate as well. A definite page turner that you may pick up and not put down until the end.

The first book in this series is Broken City and I have no doubts from the ending that there will be a third book in the future as well.

A worthy sequel to the first in the series, Broken city.
In this installment of the post apocalyptic saga, time has moved, the characters lives have changed, Ryder and Jan and Tom and Deeta are now married with Jan expecting her first child.
One day on a mission to another tribe the Andak convoy including both Jan and Deeta are attacked by snipers, in the ensuing chaos Ryder is shot, Deeta, Jan and Tom try to make a bid for freedom but also get separated when Tom tries to lead the assailants away from the women.
Tom is subsequently caught but the girls escape and find unexpected help from an offshoot tribe called the "Birds" meanwhile back at the Andak base the tribe is frantic at a huge part of their leaders disappearance and mount a rescue mission to recover the lost members but with all of them separated and with no way of getting in touch or knowing what happened to the others how can the rescuers know where to look?
Brilliantly written, great characters and engaging fast paced plot that examines the lengths to which human relationships can be tested make this a must read for fans of the genre.

Last year I had the chance to read Broken City by D.D. Chant. It is a wonderful Dystopia book and I enjoyed it immensely. Last month I was able to get my hands on the second book in this series and I was so excited!

Broken Truce starts with Deeta and Tom married and Tom is still making trips out into the city. This worries Deeta and she looks forward to him coming home. When Deeta and Tom leave to go to a neighboring tribe they think they are safe. Unfortunately on the way back home they find out that they had been betrayed and are captured. With the help of Tom, Deeta and her pregnant sister do escape and are trying to get home while they are worried about the lives of their husbands.

Now I will admit there was a few spots (only a few) where the story moved along at a slower pace. The good news is after a while it picked back up again. Now there is a bit of a cliffhanger that leaves you wondering about one of the characters but since there will be a third book this is only to be expected. I know I am looking forward to that book and cannot wait to see what happens next!

Life has changed for Deeta Richards and her family. Nothing is going as she thought it would. She is part of a new tribe and her attitudes are changing. She's not sure she is ready for all of this. Tom now has one of the most important jobs he's ever had. Deeta worries for him every time he leaves the compound. Danger is a very real part of their lives. Can they move forward or will they be defeated.

Book 2 in this series is just as fabulous as the first. Well written with characters you will love makes this a must read. Again, this is the most reasonable and most likely post- apocalyptic book out there. You will enjoy learning the new way these families live. I am in love with this series. Thanks for such wonderful books D.D. Chant!

I found no issues.

I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because it blew me away! Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~

So Deet is growing and see things the way they really are out in the real world. With her new lot in life there are new struggles and even though she has happiness in her life with Tom there is so much going on out there, much more than you saw in the last book.

This one goes back and forth between about 10 different perspectives so you not only get to see what's going on in one place at a time, but how things are all inner connected. You see more of why people are doing thing the way they are, and as far as Deet goes she has a become allot less naive and understands more of what's going on in the real world and that brought her up a few points in my book.

I love seeing how this world is turning out and what motivates people to be the way they are and how it relates to their outlook on other people and tribes. I enjoy the twists and am excited to see how thing go in the next book.

It just keeps getting better

I was really happy with the first novel in this series, and am even happier with the second. This novel carried with is all the great traits of the first novel while adding in additional suspense and intrigue. I found that I while I was drawn in to the novel based on my love of the original characters I was pleased with the changes that they are undertaking. D.D. chant picks up where broken City left off, and we find that our group is now facing new challenges and little miss Deeta is fraught with ever more danger bringing her closer to the changes that she was never meant for. I could not help but get sucked in yet again.
We now have other leading characters that I believe are going to have lasting impact on this ever growing and evolving story. I can not wait to continue the saga into the next story – waiting for it with Baited breath !!!!

*I received an ARC for my honest review*

A nice follow up to Broken City. The story continues with Deeta Richards, having now married Tom Andak and is living in the Andak compound. She had never been out of her tribe's area or dealt with what happens out 'there'. Until now. Her husband is trying to make peace between the tribes but there is so much tension, things that Deeta has never had to deal with before. Something happens while she is out there and Deeta finds that she is in danger.

I found that this novel kept me reading. I had to find out what was going to happen. I couldn't put this one down. I am hoping that D.D. Chant has a part 3 in mind because I would like to find out what happens next.

Disclaimer: I was given this as an ARC in return for an honest review

I really, really enjoyed this second instalment of the Broken City series. The characters I liked in the first book continued to develop, especially Deeta and Janny. There were also several new characters that I really felt were built in well, like Max and Ned.

I'm definitely looking forward to what happens next, I hope there's going to be a third book, especially with the ending!! I can't wait to find out the next development in the City, between the Andaks, Lewises and also the Marshalls.

After reading the first I bought the second. The story begins with Deeta now married to Tom, living in his compound with his tribe. Tom is trying so hard to make peace between the two tribes and it proves to be a difficult time for Deeta. Then something happens and Deeta finds herself in a world of danger.
The best part of this book was the plot, it was intense with lots of action. Lots of action.
