Ni feidir le Cait glacadh le difhostaiocht a fir cheile. Ta si fein agus Liam ag stracadh leis an saol chun na billi a ioc. Nil go leor airgid acu do bhronntanais na Nollag da gcuid leanai. Agus ni chabhraionn comharsa maiteach leis an sceal ach an oiread.

Thaithin an scéal seo liom. Sílimse go n-éiríonn leis an leabhar fadhbanna na meánaicme a chur in iúl go soiléir agus sa chaoi go mbraitear comhbhrón agus sonas do na carachtair de réir mar is cuí. Ach níor tharla mórán ann. D’fhéadfadh sé seo a bheith ina ghearrscéal chun an fhírinne a rá. Ach an bunscéal, tá sé ionrochtana go leor, agus is maith an insint í. Ta sí inchreidte.
An príomhrud a chuir as dom áfach ná, na botúin ghramadaí agus chló. Ní fhaca mé oiread agus leath líon na mbotún sin in aon leabhar riamh cheana. Bhí sé sin díomách, caithfidh mé a rá.
I don't know what more I wanted in 76 pages, but God this was boring. Because it's so short, I can't say much without giving spoilers, so I'll just say that every time they have no money it seems to pop up out of nowhere. And it was just a bit stupid really, never mind.
I read this in Irish as part of my language study. It is a very simple story and I found it rather dull. If you read a lot of Patricia Scanlan you might enjoy it. It was good for everyday Irish vocabulary, though.
The "Open Doors Series" is several series of short stories by various Irish authors. There are six books per series and there are currently five series.
Another ODS read Scanlan so as I've enjoyed the two books, I've read by her; I was really looking forwards to reading this book.
having grown up in a working-class family, I could really relate to how tough life was for Kate and Bill. Pride gets in the way and prevents people asking for help. People don't like to show they are struggling, and we have a tendency to mask what's really going on.
When Kates old friend Carmel comes to stay, Kate tries to put on a good show to her wealthy friend and not to show how hard times are just to put food on the table. After chatting and opening up to each other, it transpires that Carmel is not as happy as she first appears to be.
I enjoyed this and really got into the story. It seems every time I pick up a book by Scanlan, I become totally absorbed and just love reading her books.
"Secrets" by Patricia Scanlan is a heart-warming quick read about the struggles of being unemployed and trying to make ends meet. Anyone who has suffered from unemployment will easily identify with this book and it characters Kate and her family.
When Kate's husband suddenly and unexpectedly looses his job they are forced to penny pinch and battle one financial issue after another. Whe he is unable to find employment, life starts to look drab and very worrisome. This book reminds us of what is truly important and that from the outside things may not appear as they seem. Kate is ashamed with their family situation and she must learn to come to terms with the changes forced upon them. Can Kate overcome these hardships thrusted upon her family?
The author Patricia Scanlan was born in Dublin Ireland where she still resides today. She is the bestselling author of "Apartment 3B", " Finishing Touches", "Promises, Promises", and "City Girl". I definitely intend to read more of her novels. Her novel "City Girl" sounds like a fun, quirky read and I cannot wait to read this story.
Kate Ryan is stressed her Husband has been put off work for the past 18months, they are struggling to pay their bills, also Christmas is only a week away. The 3 children are very excited and are waiting for Santa. Kate has a phone call from Carmel her old School friend who she hasn’t seen for 3 years to say she will be visiting, Kate hasn’t told her about their problems, however Carmel has news of her own. Could Carmel be the answer to their money problems? I found this book when browsing in the Library, I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend.
It is a story of neighbors and friends who waste most of their time thinking about what the others think about them! It was like another version of a teen story. The difference is now the "who has more money" is the case not the "who dates the most handsome boy of the school"!
