I had been familiar with the story through the Anthony Hopkins film, and reading it was no disappointment. It is truly Shakespeare’s bloodiest play and I recommend it for anyone who is not faint of heart. It is clearly written during a brutal time about an even more brutal time and was a bloody fiesta in order to cater to an audience that had the option of watching this play or a public execution.
Well there’s a lot of weird violence. But, on the plus side, if you’re a woman in need of a great Shakespearean monologue for auditions, this play is the place to start.
