Stolen by the evil magic user Alimar the Black as children, Doom and Tiwaz grew up in slavery, forced to learn skills not typical to their races. When Tiwaz is nearly killed in an act of defiance to their cruel master, Doom risks everything to escape so his dear friend would know freedom. With Tiwaz miraculously surviving, can the two former slaves learn how to survive in freedom long enough so they can return to repay their former master for his cruelty?

I was very much looking forward to reading this story as I had loved The Sundered Lands Saga books by the same author. This is not as big a story as the others, concentrating on the relationship between Doom and Tiwaz. Stolen as children to become pets and forms of entertainment for a truly evil sorcerer.
At the start, Tiwaz saves Doom (an ugly looking demon type creature) from the wrath of the sorcerer and get's beaten for the audacity. Doom then takes it upon himself to become her protector, friend and confident. He promises her they will find a way to escape and that is what the book seems to concentrate on.
Whilst I did enjoy the story, it felt somewhat jerky. Flurries of action and a lot of back story, then suddenly, pages of Tiwaz bemoaning their position. I could understand her point of view, but after a while, it became monotonous. You can't help but want to Doom to pick her up by the scruff and shake some sense into her. Still, as the story goes on I really appreciated the religious type over tones and the great irreverence that is shown to it by some of the characters.
I do feel that there are some things that needed looking into deeper in the story and some parts could have been left out, but overall an interesting start to a new series.
I give this book a solid 4.5 stars. The story is complex and interesting, taking you through a fantastical world step-by-step and gradually introducing you to the rules of magic in their world. The characters are so real...they're strong and flawed and just amazing. And oh my gosh, the DRAGONS! I'm a sucker for dragons, and Lexy Wolfe's dragons are absolutely to die for. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a great epic fantasy read.
I enjoyed reading this book. The only drawback for me was the repetition of self degradation of the character, but that could just be because that behavior tends to rub me the wrong way. Overall entertaining.
