Emma Knightley Mysteries #1

Murder in Highbury

Rate this book
First in a captivating new series, Jane Austen’s Emma Knightley entertains a different role in Highbury—going from clever matchmaker to Regency England’s shrewdest sleuth.

"Clever and charming, Vanessa Kelly brings Austen’s world in Highbury village to life with beloved characters, twisty hijinks, and a mystery that will keep you guessing." —Madeline Martin, New York Times bestselling author of The Keeper of Hidden Books

Less than one year into her marriage to respected magistrate George Knightley, Emma has grown unusually content in her newfound partnership and refreshed sense of independence. The height of summer sees the former Miss Woodhouse gracefully balancing the meticulous management of her elegant family estate and a flurry of social engagements, with few worries apart from her beloved father’s health . . .

But cheery circumstances change in an instant when Emma and Harriet Martin, now the wife of one of Mr. Knightley’s tenant farmers, discover a hideous shock at the local church. The corpse of Mrs. Augusta Elton, the vicar’s wife, has been discarded on the altar steps—the ornate necklace she often wore stripped from her neck . . .

As a chilling murder mystery blooms and chaos descends upon the tranquil village of Highbury, the question isn’t simply who committed the crime, but who wasn’t secretly wishing for the unpleasant woman’s demise. When suspicions suddenly fall on a harmless local, Emma—armed with wit, unwavering determination, and extensive social connections—realizes she must discreetly navigate an investigation of her own to protect the innocent and expose the ruthless culprit hiding in plain sight.

Vanessa Kelly has written a charming cozy Regency historical mystery, Murder in Highbury. It features Jane Austen’s Emma Woodhouse Knightley as the lead character and takes place one year after her marriage to magistrate George Knightley. When Emma and Harriet Smith Martin discover a dead body in the local church, the story is off to a creative start. With suspicions falling on multiple people throughout the novel, Emma is determined to solve the case and protect the innocent.

Full of humor and wit, this book is clever and easy to read with well-developed characters. The atmosphere of a rural village was presented well. However, the dialogue did not feel realistic to the period and the incompetence of some of the characters felt overdone. Additionally, the pacing was a little slow in places and the real murderer was relatively easy to discern. Despite this, it is a charming and enjoyable read and the character dynamics was well-done.

Overall, this is an entertaining and amusing read that will likely appeal to those who enjoy Jane Austen’s original novel and those who like cozy historical mysteries.

Kensington Books provided a complimentary physical copy of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date was October 22, 2024.

It’s like Jane Austen said, “What if Emma… but with murder?” Set in 1815, it’s got gossip, drama, and a body count. Cozy, chaotic, and surprisingly sharp 4 stars and a raised teacup to that!

4 solid stars from this reader, however, I am very well versed in the source material, namely Austen’s “Emma”. I really liked the concept of turning now-married Emma, from “clueless” into an amateur detective & I felt it was a fun cozy mystery with Austen’s characters and settings. But that said, if you can’t remember or don't know who Harriet and the Elton’s are, much less Knightly, then it might not the book for you.

This is a well-written, entertaining, historical fiction, mystery novel. It has a likable, intelligent and astute female protagonist, an engaging and supportive male protagonist, murder, mystery, wit, a touch of humor, an unexpected twist, and a satisfying conclusion. I am looking forward to reading the next entry in this wonderful new series with great anticipation. Many thanks to Ms. Vanessa Kelly, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, from whom I received an advanced reader copy of this delightful novel. This is my honest opinion.

A whodunit involving Emma & George Knightley? Yes please! I adored this Regency mystery! Vanessa Kelly brilliantly captured the essence of Jane Austen’s beloved couple so well. It felt like a natural extension of Emma with a mystery that kept me completely enthralled.

When Emma & her friend Harriet Martin discover the body of their nemesis Mrs. Augusta Elton in the church, it’s apparent she’s been murdered. But, which of the people she ran afoul with could have done such a thing in their tranquil town of Highbury? With Knightley as the magistrate, it’s up to him and his somewhat inept constables to investigate the crime. When an old, seemingly harmless friend is accused of the murder, Emma sets out to discover the truth.

I loved this mystery! It was so fun revisiting all the familiar characters of Jane Austen’s much loved Emma. From Emma & Knightley, Frank & Jane Churchill, the Martins, Miss Bates, & Emma’s father, to the annoying Mr. Elton, I felt like I was reacquainting myself with old familiar friends. The mystery kept me guessing with each new clue Emma discovers. There are quite a few suspects, and while I guessed who it might be fairly quickly, I was riveted leading up to the dramatic conclusion.

Highly recommend this lovely cozy Regency mystery, especially to Jane Austen fans. I’m hoping Emma & Knightley find another mystery to investigate, maybe that elusive poultry thief… I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author and publisher. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided.

CW: a few instances of mild swearing, brief violence, mild description of murder scene.

I absolutely adored this first in a new Regency historical mystery series featuring beloved Emma Knightley as an amateur detective. I cheered for her as she searched for the murderer of the vicar's wife, Mrs. Augusta Elton, so annoying many would want to off her. Emma uses her innate charm and strong social network to crack the case as chaos ensues across the village of Highbury. Highly highly recommended for all mystery loving Janeites and anyone who digs fine Regency historicals.

If you’re a fan of Jane Austen’s work, especially her novel, Emma, this book is for you. Murder at Highbury features many of the characters from Jane Austen’s Emma, including Emma herself, now Mrs. George Knightley; George Knightley; her friend Harriet; the Reverend Mr. Elton; Emma’s father Mr. Woodhouse; and so forth. When Emma and Harriet find the murdered body of Mrs. Elton in the church, the action starts. But there’s really not a lot of action. While she has abandoned her matchmaking efforts, Emma now flexes her talents as an amateur sleuth - mostly by talking to people and being observant. And there’s lots and lots of talking. And drinking of tea. I think there really was only one significant action scene and that was very near the end when the murderer was revealed. At 400 pages, I think it could have been pared down quite a bit and been a more enjoyable reading experience.

Thank you to Kensington Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Blog Post: https://bookloveramanda.blogspot.com/...

Felt like this one was a good, classic mystery! Reminded me of like an Agatha Christie style mystery. Although I haven’t read Emma by Jane Austen and can’t personally compare how closely this aligns with it, I still found this to be an excellent read. From what I’ve gathered from others, it stays true to Austen’s style by going into themes of class, marriage, and social status. I could definitely recognize those elements myself, having read Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Northanger Abbey.

A year into her marriage to Mr. Knightley, Emma is working through things with her family estate, social engagements and whatnot, when things get crazy after she finds Mrs. Augusta Elton, the vicar's wife, has been murdered. Emma and Mr. Knightley become the newlywed sleuthing duo, trying to figure out who really murdered Mrs. Elton.

I think readers who enjoy a good classic mystery will enjoy this book as I did! Sometimes the pacing was a bit slower with drawn-out scenes, but overall I really enjoyed the story. I listened to the audiobook over the course of 2 weeks here and there and the narration is chef's kiss! Really pulls you in.

As far as content, this is close to cozy but a smidge more details about the murder then you usually see in a cozy mystery. Nothing graphic or offensive in my opinion, some occasional mild swearing but very few words, and more so like swearing "of the times" of a book written by Jane Austen, so not very explicit to me. The violence or murder details in my opinion were brief with mentions of blood, body on the steps, bludgeoned with the murder weapon explained, so its a bit more than a cozy mystery but nothing very explicit either in my opinion. etc.

Overall, I think this is a delightful regency mystery that will be perfect for Jane Austen fans, if you are good with reading about actual Jane Austen characters from her books. I feel like Vanessa captured the essence of what I know from Jane's writing and I look forward to her next book soon!

PS I actually picked out the killer from the beginning for once, yay!

When Jane Austen’s delightful Matchmaker stumbles on a body, Emma finds a new interest to devote her time. Vanessa Kelly has written some engaging historical romantic suspenses, but I was over the top thrilled when she took up her pen to write a murder mystery and sequel set in the world of Jane Austen’s Emma.

Attractive to both devotees of Austen or those who have never picked up one of her books or the movie adaptions, Murder in Highbury, takes readers into the Regency Era world of the classic novel Emma. The time is about a year after the final events of that book and Emma Knightley has settled into newly married life as leading lady of Highbury village and looking after her hypochondrial aging parent. She gave up her matchmaking ways, but now she and her friend, Harriet Martin stumble across the body of the vicar’s wife, Mrs. Elton, and her death was no accident. Emma’s keen observations and quick wit note evidence that her admiring husband who is magistrate gladly accepts and the coroner and the local constable don’t appreciate. George Knightley would rather Emma stay out of the investigation, but he can’t deny his wife is a good investigator since she knows all the principle people and can get more from the witnesses and suspects just being her sunny, caring, and interested self.

It didn’t take me long to cotton to the truth, but that didn’t diminish my enjoyment of being along as Emma poked into the lives of the locals and slowly worked the evidence and witness accounts to the surprising truth. Vanessa Kelly did an outstanding job creating the authentic historical backdrop, but also recreating Austen’s characters and world of her novel. She claimed to love this novel best and this shines through the story as Emma shows she has come into her own after the missteps she experienced before her marriage and she has a true loving and respectful partnership with George Knightley who balances out wanting to keep her safely out of danger and out of the official investigation, but acknowledging and using her superior skills that the official investigators lack.

Murder in Highbury was all I was hoping it would be and I really hope this becomes a series with more Emma the detecting Matchmaker in it. Those who enjoy historical cozy mysteries and also those who want an Austen novel sequel with a murder included should add this to their reading lists.

I rec'd an eARC via NetGalley and a finished print copy from Kensington Books and Austenprose to read in exchange for an honest review.

Vanessa Kelly knows her Emma! The characters are fresh in my mind after re-reading Emma this summer, and I love how the author kept the spirit of the characters. There were many little details that a fan of Emma will pick up on and appreciate. It was so fun to see Emma and Mr. Knightley married, too. The dynamic between them seemed spot on as a continuation from the original story. I enjoyed the mystery and was thoroughly bamboozled as to the murderer. Lots of red herrings. I thought the first part of the story was a bit slow, but the pace picked up in the last 100 pages. There was one small plot point that didn't seem to have a resolution, but it wasn't part of the overall mystery.

Full disclosure: I didn’t finish this one. I was trying to give it at least 30%, but only made it to 27%.

THE GOOD:
A light mystery novel with a plucky heroine. Great for a minimalist beach read.

THE BAD:
There’s just not enough going on in this story to keep my interest. I’m 108 pages in and there’s been a body found, lots of conversations, and the funeral.

CONCLUSION:
Similar to Tasha Alexander’s Lady Emily series, but without the exotic locales, or the sharp wit.

What a delightfully fun historical mystery starring Jane Austen's Emma Woodhouse (now Knightley) as an amateur sleuth. She's honestly perfect for the role. She's charming and very likable! Well-written and witty, with fantastic historical detail, this book is a love letter to both Austen and murder mysteries. However, you do not need to be familiar with Austen's original work to enjoy this, as it stands on its own. The mystery was solidly plotted and had enough misdirection to keep you guessing, as well as secrets and humor to keep you entertained. The pacing was good, and the mystery was interesting. This is the kind of book you'll want to brew a pot of tea and curl up with. Cozy and historical mystery lovers will want to add to their lists!

A very (very) slow-moving, cozy mystery based on Emma. I think I would advise folks to re-read the book before this to get a bit more out of it (or watch one of the dozens of film adaptations). There is a lot of speculating, quite a bit of repetitiveness, and is slow (did I mention it was really slow?). But I could see this being an episode of some Austen-esque murder mystery, though they would need to pick up the pace a bit (because. It is. So slow).

"Murder in Highbury" by Vanessa Kelly is a murder mystery that takes place in the world of Jane Austen’s “Emma.” The events in this story take place soon after the events in “Emma.” This story is perfect for fans of Jane Austen, witty stories, and murder mysteries! You do not have to have read Austen’s novel to enjoy this charming book, although fans will be delighted with how true to Austen the author stays in “Murder in Highbury.” Ms. Kelly gives readers a good explanation of events in the original “Emma” book, in case the reader is not familiar with it. As a huge fan of both Austen and “Emma” myself, I loved that reading “Murder in Highbury” felt like I was reading another one of Austen’s works. Ms. Kelly really knows her Austen and has a great grasp on the beloved characters. Everything they do and say in her novels feels so true to their character. “Murder in Highbury” is written with a wit and wry humor and Emma has some great one liners. The mystery is so well done, and I was fully invested throughout. I was able to guess who committed the crime, just before the reveal. Of course Emma would get involved in a murder mystery; and who better to write it than Ms. Kelly? I cannot wait to see what Emma gets up to next!

Content: I give this a PG rating. Some examples of the content are: the words “as*,” “hell,” “bloody,” “dam*ation,” “bastard,” and “devil” are used; the Lord’s name is taken in vain; sexual innuendo; characters drink alcohol, talk of people possibly being lovers; says someone isn’t a virgin.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

True confession: Emma Woodhouse is one of my least favorite Austen heroines BUT George Knightley is my very favorite of her heroes. And it’s for that reason alone that I wanted to read Murder in Highbury by Vanessa Kelly. A chance to shallowly swoon over Mr. Knightley as a married man? Yes please! I am happy to report that he’s just as yummy as I expected him to be, while retaining his sardonic wit and banter with Emma too. I am also happy to report that I much prefer this rendition of Emma – clearly, marriage to her beloved George is good for her.

I was absolutely delighted with the way author Vanessa Kelly has immersed us once more in Highbury and the world of Emma. Her ability to not only stay true to Austen’s characterizations and duplicate their personalities and distinct voices (especially Miss Banks) but also to add her own affectionate touches that perfectly complement what Austen left behind (especially for Emma’s father) brought much enjoyment to the reading for me. I would never have thought of Emma as an amateur sleuth, but now that the idea has been put before me I can’t see it any other way. Of course Emma would be right in the middle of an investigation, whether or not she found the body but especially so because she did. It’s refreshing to see that she has learned from her matchmaking mistakes and seems more aware of people now in ways she wasn’t before. Something which serves her well as she investigates the horrible murder of Mrs. Elton and puts up with a histrionic Mr. Elton (you can imagine how even more long-suffering it is to be around him than usual) as well as local gossips and a less-than-astute constable and coroner.

Bottom Line: Vanessa Kelly skillfully captures everything we love about Jane Austen’s Emma and carries it seamlessly forward into this delightful new story. The essence of the original characters settles around readers with a lovely nostalgia, and it’s clear from the affection with which she wrote them that Kelly is a fan of Austen’s classic as well. Emma and George are so fun (and subtly swoony) as a devoted married couple, and I loved how she drove him slightly crazy with her sleuthing, much as she used to with her matchmaking. The mystery is cleverly plotted, the witty one-liners perfectly timed, and the quaint setting of Highbury ideally situated for this type of story. Murder in Highbury is a must-read for fans of Emma, the Regency era, Mr. Knightley, Stephanie Barron’s Jane Austen Mysteries, laughter, affection, and a layered mystery to solve!

Reviewer’s Note: Readers of this blog may want to be aware that there is some mild and infrequent cursing in this book.

Murder in Highbury by Vanessa Kelly is a cozy mystery that takes place soon after Emma by Jane Austen ends. The story begins as Emma Knightly and Harriet Martin discover Mrs. Augusta Elton’s body inside Highbury’s church. Who could do such a thing? The entire Highbury community is in an uproar as they try to unravel the mystery of Mrs. Elton’s murderer!

I absolutely LOVED this story! The author did an amazing job continuing the story of Emma in the most creative way while staying true to the story of Emma. I felt like the original story was simply continuing making Murder in Highbury a joy to read. I loved getting to know some of my favorite characters more in depth, and absolutely enjoyed my time in Highbury. The mystery was very intriguing and I kept turning thevpages to see what would happen next.

Murder in Highbury by Vanessa Kelly is well written, has engaging characters, and stays true to Jane Austen’s story, Emma! I think any fan of historical fiction, Jane Austen’s novels, and Regency mysteries will be intrigued! I highly recommend Murder in Highbury by Vanessa Kelly! This will be a favorite of 2024 for me!

I am a Janeite who has an admittedly high bar for pastiche. When it comes to beloved characters like Emma and George Knightly appearing in newer books, I'm both enthusiastic and cautious. Will the new work maintain their chemistry and personality quirks? Will their banter be as charming as in the original story?

In the case of Murder in Highbury by Vanessa Kelly, the answer is YES! Emma and Knightly are as delightful as in the original, but they get to investigate the murder of Mrs. Elton in this story. While George is the magistrate in Highbury, Emma is the person who stumbles upon the body (with Harriet), so her involvement is understandable from the beginning. We get to see the entire original cast in this story, even Jane and Frank, which I thought would be impossible, but Vanessa Kelly managed it.

The pace is brisk without being breakneck and the banter keeps things lively and entertaining. This was such a fun read. I was happy to see hints that this isn't likely to be a standalone! I'd love to see more of Emma and George sleuthing together!

A Regency murder mystery staring none other than Jane Austen’s, Emma! Where do we sign up? Author Vanessa Kelly could not have selected a more suitable amateur detective - no really! Jane Austen fans are sure to delight as Emma extends her social skills to sleuthing. A match made in heaven!

It is a delight to revisit all the familiar characters such as Harriet, Miss Bates and all the other villagers and let us not of course forget Emma’s now husband, Mr Knightley. How wonderful to revisit Highbury with this cozy murder mystery that is sure to appeal to Janeites and indeed anyone who loves a wonderful historical mystery.

Regency mystery is not my normal read these days, BUT:

When I saw this murder mystery detective was none other than Jane Austen’s tireless Emma Woodhouse (now Knightly), well... I hit the request button at NetGalley quicker than you can say Frank Churchhill.

Our beloved Emma is less than one year into her marriage to magistrate George Knightley, when she stumbles upon a deceased Mrs. Augusta Elton, the vicar’s wife. She's been left on the church steps and she missing a crucial piece of jewelry!

And so begins the organized chaos that is IS Emma Woodhouse, but here she has traded in her matchmaking skills for detective work.

This audio version was SO fun, the narrators are perfect and the story will have you laughing one minute and full of tense suspense the next. I would read an entire series of Emma and George's life post nuptials, especially as she drives him a little batty with all her investigating nonsense. Thank you To Vanessa Kelly for brainstorming this wondering concoction!

Thank you to NetGalley and Tantor Audio for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for a fair and honest review!

I throughly enjoyed the audiobook production of this regency-era cozy murder mystery. The story is about the death of a vicar’s wife in a small English village and the air of mystery and suspicion that takes over the town. The magistrate’s wife, Emma Knightley can’t help herself as she begins to investigate the crime.

The cast of characters was great - our main character Emma was a smart, witty character who has a good head on her shoulders and I loved seeing her work out the puzzle of this small town murder.

Polly Lane does a great job narrating this book. The pacing is well done and I was entertained throughout and never found myself guessing at which character we were hearing from - Lane uses a different tone and even accent work for each character which made it easy to follow. The only quibble I have was that the voice she uses for George Knightley, our heroine’s husband, was really monotone. He is often described as witty and there are these lovely banter-filled exchanges between he and Emma, but they’re read in such a dry and flat way that it just fell short for me. Otherwise, I really loved how Lane was able to distinguish the different voices.

The plot kept me guessing right until the end and I only started to unravel the true identity of the murder when I was at about 80%, so I enjoyed a mystery that didn’t seem obvious right away!

I would recommend this book to any audiobook lovers who enjoy Bridgerton, regency romances, and Agatha Christie mystery novels.

What if, shortly after the event's of Jane Austen's Emma, the odious vicar's wife, Mrs. Elton, was murdered in the village church? Besides everyone throwing a celebration party, I mean.

No, but really, I LOVED this, and I did not expect to. Emma Woodhouse (Knightley) solving a murder in her village, cozy mystery style? How could that work without feeling extremely forced and silly?

Turns out, Vanessa Kelly made it work! Clearly by knowing the characters of Emma extraordinarily well. This was my biggest fear about giving this book a try because Emma is my second favorite Austen novel, and even the slightest character detail that didn't ring true would have soured the whole thing, but nope, this was basically pitch perfect. She got Emma and Knightley's relationship right, which I was most impressed by.

(I did have my doubts about how realistic it would be for an Austen heroine to want to discuss blood and "murder weapons," but I was able to overlook that detail, because how else do you make this book work? I was able to buy it for the plot's sake, because Kelly mostly kept this to a minimum.)

Anywho, if you enjoy JAFF (Jane Austen fanfic) or historical cozy mysteries, I recommend this!

Thank you to Vanessa Kelly, Tantor Audio, and NetGalley for allowing me to listen to a free eaudio ARC in exchange for an honest review.

DNF 39%. This book has been on my radar for months, endorsed by many of my favorite authors. Supposed to be highly anticipated, or at least that's the impression I got. (Great job, marketing team!) I was so excited to see this pop up on NetGalley.

Aaaand it's boring. Quickly became a chore to listen to. All the characters, with the exception of George and Emma, are dicks and wasps with nothing better to do than be dicks and wasps. I heard the words "gossip" and "society" enough times to make me want to puke. And all the characters, with the exception of George and Emma, are neurotic as hell. Also, everyone whines to George. Do something, George! Make this stop, George! Do this, George, do that, George! Help us, George! George, George, George.

When after over 4 hours I realized I still had about 8 hours more to listen to (at 1.25 speed, because the narrator talked ssssllllooooowww), I called it. Why is this book FOURTEEN hours long?!? Why?!? Absolutely no reason it needs to be! If it had been eight or nine, I might have stuck it out, but god.

I've never read the Austen book that features Emma, so I didn't have any previous attachment to the characters going in, and it feels like Kelly expects readers to already know and love Emma and George. Nope, sorry, you've made an ass out of u and me.

Others may think this book is perfectly fine, but it was not my cuppa. FOURTEEN hours for a cozy mystery!

*I received an advanced reader copy of this book for review from Austenprose/Kensington Books/Netgalley. Thank you for the opportunity. All thoughts are my own*

Fans of Jane Austen’s Emma, rejoice! Vanessa Kelly’s Murder in Highbury is the start of a new murder mystery series featuring Emma Woodhouse (now Knightly).

Emma has been married to George Knightly the town magistrate not even a year, when she and her dear friend Harriet Martin stumble upon the body of Mrs. Augusta Elton inside Highbury’s church. The town is in a complete uproar as they grapple with the fact that a murder has taken place, and they have no idea who could have murdered poor Mrs. Elton. Emma decides to trade her match making skills for detective skills to assist George and the bumbling town constables.

I absolutely adored this cozy, Regency mystery! It was so well written; it felt like a continuation of Emma. It was wonderful to spend more time with Emma and George Knightly and the whole cast of characters. I appreciated the wit and humor throughout the story and found myself chuckling often. Although I had some suspicions about who the murderer could be, I enjoyed every minute of this story from beginning to end.

I do hope this series will continue as I need more detective Emma Knightly in my life! Sign me up!

Bottom line, I highly recommend for fans of Austen, mysteries and historical fiction.

Thanks to the author and NetGalley for the early copy to read and review ahead of publication. All thoughts are my own responses and/or reactions.

This. Was. Excellent. 👌
The tone and feel are true to Austen’s original, and it was so lovely to be back in Highbury and with old friends again. I loved seeing Emma and Knightley as a married couple, and deeply appreciated that while we are informed they’re very much enjoying married life ^ahem^ particulars are left to our imagination. {I don’t mind spice, obviously, but in this case it works so beautifully to not be told. Knightley would not approve of a sexy scene being shared, hehe}. The murder and subsequent investigation are twisty and convoluted and of course our dear Emma is going to be involved.
It’s good reading, thoroughly enjoyed myself, and already can’t wait for Book 2 when Book 1 has not published yet!

Highbury is tailor-made for a cozy mystery (Emma is honestly like a detective fiction precursor), so it’s pretty hard to mess this up with a perfect setting gifted via Jane Austen. I liked this! the characterization was on point for the most part, not too many new people added, and I’m left with (almost!!) no questions. a good time <3

Very pleasant novel of a “cozy murder mystery” set in the town of Highbury from Jane Austen’s novel of Emma. Although still eminently readable without having read her novel (or seen the movie) it is a definite advantage to be familiar with this cast of characters. It opens shortly after Emma and Mr. Knightley have wed, so the continuity from novel is seamless. Emma is somewhat more mature and actively pursues information to help defend an innocent person accused of the murder. The victim was not well-liked so there are many possibilities of who murdered her. Kind of interesting to see how investigations were conducted during that time period in England.

Emma by Jane Austen imagined as a murder mystery is so much fun! Emma and Knightley are so adorable!
When Emma and Harriet find Mrs. Elton murdered, Emma sets out too solve the murder.
Every character is just perfect. Her father is just as annoying, Harriet as scatter brained as ever, and Mr. Elton obsequious and overbearing at the same time. Miss Bates can't get a word out without fluttering.
There are red herrings galore, as well as a chicken thief . The coroner and sheriff are very misogynistic , and the way Knightley as the magistrate handles them is perfect. I just loved the whole premise. I can't wait to see how she writes the sequel.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the EARC. I highly recommend this book. This is my honest opinion.
