A well-written summary of the basic research-related topics I apparently knew when I was writing my BA, but had managed to get lost in while fidgeting around the MA. Also, I’d like to publically* express my agreement to the point that language in academic style should follow the principle of reader-friendliness (oh, the nice paragraphs of ‘fancy academia is fancy’ that yield practically no useful information, as a bonus making you feel ridiculously illiterate). So, there.

*To all my linguistically-talented Goodreads cake buddies.

Not the best book to introduce you to research in applied linguistics.
However, this book is really helpful for beginners.

I'm not a complete beginner anyway. I had my qualitative research in pragmatics when I was an undergraduate student. I wish the writer could give me more info about quantitative research, statistics, and stuff.

A useful overview of social science research methods, but lacks particular relevance to applied linguistics.

Didn’t expect my first book I finish in 2021 to be a textbook, but that’s grad school, baby 🤓👉👉

I started on an earlier edition that I found online and then bought a new copy of this edition. This book is a classic and is heavily cited. An excellent introduction to quantitative and qualitative research methods. Often researchers of one diss the other while both qualitative and quantitative methods can work together, so it was refreshing to read a fair assessment of both. Dornyei explains the reasoning behind both types of methods without being getting bogged down in the deep philosophical underpinnings of either. This is a good book to read to learn the why of methods before moving on to more technical books on the how of methods. Dornyei himself has an amazing publication record.

If you read only one book on the topic, it probably ought to be this one. Dörnyei seems to understand qualitative and quantitative methods equally well. I like how he doesn't sway too much in the direction of either but gives them both equal play.

Excellent, highly reader-friendly, understanding and useful for novice reseachers. I just love his casual and direct writing style and feel so grateful for having run into this great book while doing my BA thesis. Highly recommended and thank you Dornyei~
