Between Before and After

Five friends, three days, one heart-stopping discovery.

Three years ago, Danny Morris left behind a gun, a tonne of questions and a gaping hole in the lives of those who loved him. What he didn’t leave was a suicide note.

On the anniversary of his death, his closest friends gather at his parents’ beach house in New Zealand's idyllic Marlborough Sounds. Danny’s girlfriend, Kate, is fighting valiantly against her blossoming feelings for his best friend, Finn, afraid she is somehow betraying his memory by moving on. Max is self-medicating with alcohol, fighting off nightmares he refuses to talk about as the memory of finding Danny’s body continues to haunt him. While Finn is finally ready to admit to himself that he is drawn to Kate, trying to save Max from himself dredges up long-buried anger and frustration that threaten to overwhelm him.

Three years ago, a single bullet ricocheted through all of them. But instead of time easing the pain, it has created a new set of problems.

How do you leave the past behind when it's right in front of you?

Between Before and After is a story that gripped me the minute I started reading and didn’t let go until it was done with its three day roller coaster ride of emotions. For me, a book needs to have me connect with the characters and then the rest all falls into place for me. This book has five every special characters that endeared themselves to me in all different ways.

The book spans five friends over three days dealing with the grief they all still hold over their friend Danny’s death. What I really loved about this book is that everyone was dealing with their grief in different ways ... and very real ways. It wasn’t overstated and it wasn’t understated. It was just right. But what I really enjoyed was things I didnt expect. This book really was a rollercoaster and managed to surprise me with its twists and turns that I really didnt expect. It was written in such a way that allowed you to go with the flow and grieve with these characters only to have it all turned upside down. I’m sure if the characters could talk they would disagree with me BUT I found that exciting. It added layers and twisted just at the right moment to make me think ... wow. I thought it was quite brilliant.

I fell in love with Finn. Watching him work through everyone else’s issues while being the guy that is coping okay with that underlying bitter anger that I think he even fooled himself into believing wasn’t there was amazing. He is a strong, good, well written character. His reactions and feelings were so natural and so keenly felt by me as I read him that I ached for him and I fell for him.
The other characters were just as heartbreakingly awesome and complex.

A book about five friends spending three days at a cabin for the anniversary of their friend’s death might not sound all that action-packed but I have to say. I was on the edge of my seat as the story built and grew. Not to mention the scenery of such a beautiful place jumps off the pages with loving detail that allows you to put yourself in that place. It is a prime example of fantastic writing.
I LOVED every minute of this book and have NO hesitation in recommending it to everyone. In fact I believe everyone should get themselves a copy. It’s amazing. I love it.

description...

Hope behind the sadness, is there such a thing?

I wasn't planning to read this quite yet, but my interest and need to know how the sensitive subject matter would be handled was peaked that once I read the first page I couldn't put it down.

A beautifully written tale of a grief stricken group of friends who are finding it impossible to cope and move on when the unimaginable happens, a tale told many a times before, but what makes this story so different and feel so real is it could be any group of friends. From the people you know, to just your own group of friends or mine ... facing a reality that many struggle to cope with. Everything felt so strong in this book, every emotion and action and yet at the same time everything feeling so imcomplete and just - left unsaid, which made it all the more heartbreaking to read. Can enduring friendship heal all wounds .... you'll just have to read it and find out for yourself.

Wow! What an amazing story this was! This is the first book I read by this Author and I am going right onto her other book, "Absolution" because I enjoyed her writing and the depth of these characters so much! There were times I got goosebumps and then my heart was just aching. I loved this circle of friends; we should all be so lucky to have life long friends like these! I highly recommend this book!!!

A very emotional and gripping story that will drawn you in at the beginning. Five friends who share one bond – the death of their mutual friend, Danny from suicide. It chronicled how each dealt with their grief in different ways. A very emotional and heartwarming story. I voluntarily chose to review this book after receiving an arc copy.

PHENOMENAL READ!!!!

Every once in a while, you come upon a book that is a treasure. It takes you beyond the fictional journeys the characters take; it changes the way you look at life. Between Before and After does just that. It is a heartbreaking, beautiful book that will alter the way you look at relationships, depression, suicide, and grief.

“Was there something between alive and dead, between before and after?”
This is the very question that all the characters in the book ask themselves after their dear friend, Danny, kills himself. Every year on the anniversary of his death, they meet at his parent’s beach house. The bulk of the story takes place on the third anniversary of his death. Even though time has passed, his memory is still alive. His presence is felt everywhere. Each person deals with their grief in a different way. Kate, his girlfriend, holds fast to his memory, still living in the home they shared and where he killed himself. She does find herself developing feelings for his friend, Finn. Finn also has feelings for Kate, but they both don’t seem to know what to do about it. In addition, their friend, Max, who found Danny, seems to be distancing himself and drowning his depression in alcohol. They are afraid of losing like they did Danny and don’t know how to bring him back from the edge. Gavin and Lacey are dealing with grief after suffering a loss of their own recently. During these several days, secrets will be uncovered, and each will have to come to terms with their grief if they are to move forward in life.

Amanda Dick deals with serious issues in a very realistic yet sensitive way. For instance, the book opens with Danny in his home preparing to kill himself. Through her writing, I was able to see the dark demon of depression and other mental issues that were taking over his life and how he was convinced that this was his only way to alleviate the pain. As she chronicles each character’s grief, I not only saw that pain but felt it when she wrote such passages as this one:

“Grief was more than a feeling, it was a process. It was something you had to go through—a journey—before you could put it behind you and emerge on the other side of it, hopefully stronger, definitely altered. Even so, it etched pain into your soul forever. Just when you thought you had managed to wipe all the telltale marks away, something else happened to remind you that is was never truly gone.”

This book truly changed the way I look at certain things in life like mental health issues, relationships, suicide, and grief. I hope that others who read this book who may be experiencing some of the same issues as these characters or who know people who are suffering the same thing will find help and hope within the pages of this book. I believe it truly has the chance to save lives. Thank you, Amanda, for such an important story!

Between Before and After is about a group of friends who have to face every year, the torment of their friend, Danny's death. Danny shot himself and committed suicide but none of them understand why he did it. Every year on the anniversary of his death, the group meet at Danny's beach house to be there for each other and try to come to terms with him not being there anymore.

Three years after Danny's death is approaching and the group is making there way to the beach house. Max is the guy who found Danny after the incident and he is still plagued with nightmares and finds it hard to cope but he pastes on a smile as if everything is fine. Lacey and Gavin are a couple and are experiencing some torment of their own. Lacey has just has a miscarriage and is struggling to move on. It was a shock when she found out but they got used to the idea of being parents but now they are trying to move on and Lacey thinks that time away at the beach house might do them both some good. Kate was Danny's girlfriend when Danny took his life and she too is finding it difficult to move on. She doesn't know how to move on and she's is finding it hard to understand her feelings for Danny's best friend, Finn. Finn was Danny's best friend and going to the beach house every year is a really big deal and also really hard. He is struggling with his feelings for Kate and is not sure whether to tell her or make a move. He is not sure if she is ready to move on.

So that's the whole group. They all believe that meeting on the anniversary of Danny's death but this time, everyone seems worse off.

It's a really great book. I love that we get to read from everyone's POV. There is so much going on from secrets that are making people feel guilty to everyone dealing with their own situations as well as the reason they are all there. At times, some chapters seemed irreverent and would drone on awhile but overall i thoroughly enjoyed reading it. All the characters were fantastic, Max drove me mad at times! Finn and Kate's will they, won't they routine kept me gripped. I gasped at a lot of things i didn't see coming and at times, it was quite emotional to read especially the detailed description that Max tells of when he found Danny. I enjoyed reading it. It was a great read!

Amanda has outdone herself with this gripping and emotional story about surviving tragedy, finding acceptance, and learning to live again. While some suggest that time heals all wounds, this story will show you that is not always the case. No measure of time could adequately do what the power of friendship did for Kate, Max, Finn, Lacey and Gavin.

In the three years since Danny’s death, things have not really changed for anyone. Each is still silently living in the aftermath of Danny’s suicide and struggling with the what-ifs of the tragedy.

“It feels like we’re in limbo… just waiting for things to get better.”

What started as a tradition to commemorate Danny had become downright miserable for everyone. But Max seemed to be barely hanging on and the rest took notice.

“Danny’s decision haunted them more than any twist of fate or act of God.”

Determined not to allow any repeat of history, the friends took action which lead to some startling disclosures from Max and Finn. In the wake of the new information, these friends seek closure that can only come from talking openly about that dreadful day.

“Grief was more than a feeling, it was a process. It was something you had to go through – a journey – before you could put it behind you.”

My heart ached for these characters and the way they struggled to move forward. I wanted to hug them all and reassure them that the overwhelming void they were experiencing would only get better if they worked through the grieving process. At times, I wanted to shake some sense into them for allowing the grief to dictate their lives. But the reality of grief is that it can make or break you and we all deal differently.

This was a difficult topic to read about and I applaud Amanda for not glamorizing suicide. She was extremely sensitive with the story and yet gave us a realistic rendition of what it might be like to have something so tragic hit so close to home. While much of this story was spent anticipating something terrible, I was pleased with how things wrapped up.

Emotional, Gut- wrenching, Relatable, Well-Written
Those are just a few of the words to describe this novel by Amanda Dick. I advise this book for mature readers as the subject content is not for young readers. This is the story of five friends who are all struggling to come to terms with the suicide of their friend Danny, three years before. They meet up annually at the beach house as they have always done since the suicide. They stay in touch throughout the year and see each other as well but the gathering at the beach house is always different.
Kate was Danny’s girlfriend at the time and right before his suicide they had a fight and she had left their home in fear. Lacey and Gavin are married and just suffered a miscarriage prior to coming to the beach house. Max has been avoiding everyone as he has fought his own demons since the death of Danny as he was the one to find him. Finn is falling for Kate and is grappling with those feelings and also with the knowledge he was the last one to see Danny alive.
The five friends are all at different junctures of the grieving process. This book demonstrates all the stages and outcomes of what happens to those left behind in these situations. It is clear that the author spent time making each character relatable and unique so the reader could clearly see where everyone was in this process. This is a story of love, forgiveness, personal growth and facing the future that one may not have planned for. I absolutely loved this story and commend the author for tackling this tough issue so well.

Wow, I loved this book. Five friends living with and trying to deal with their grief from a friends suicide. I loved these characters and I was really caught up in this story. It was so realistic, each character dealing with it in their own way. It's now three years later and they are still struggling to move on with their lives and trying to find the reason why it happened. This is the first book I have read like this and I am so glad I did. I was right there with them as the story unfolds and wanting everything to work out for them. When I wasn't reading, I found myself thinking about this book and anxious to be able to get back to reading. Great job Amanda with this sensitive subject matter and bringing to life the aftermath for the survivors.

Amanda Dick masterfully weaves a tale of friendship, sadness and hope. She builds the setting so strongly, so completely that it will feel like somewhere you have visited, a familiar place. Like her debut novel Absolution, the characters are warm, but human, fleshed out so well they almost feel 3D. This is one of the strengths of her writing. They could be your group of friends, which makes the situation they find themselves in so heartbreaking. However, Amanda shows the hope behind the sadness, making this story not only one of grief and enduring friendship, but hope and healing. I really enjoyed this novel. I read it in one sitting, so fair warning: it is hard to put down.
Highly recommend: five stars.

Let me start this review off by being honest. The subject matter of this book is difficult, which is why I've been awaiting the day that I could read it. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I have been a fan of Amanda Dick's since I read Absolution. After hearing that she was working on a book that dealt with such a emotionally rough topic, I really could not wait for this book. I like books that are based on fantasy, but books that deal with real problems, real human emotions, those are the ones that tug at my heartstrings, cause me to break out the tissue box and will no doubt live in my heart forever.

I think that the author handled this difficult topic with great sensitivity and a poetic writing style. The depression and life changes that Danny brings upon his friends is REAL. Some of the scenes and descriptions in this book are graphic, but if we are to be honest, Amanda Dick has written a hauntingly beautiful, realistic depiction of suicide and the wounds it leaves behind.

I have always found that this author steps outside the box when it comes to her characters and the stories she tells, and I for one appreciate that.

Yes, the topic of suicide is not a pleasant one, but we cannot ignore that it exists in the world we live in. We cannot deny the tragedy that friends and loved ones face when those that choose to leave this world make that decision.

I applaud Ms. Dick for being courageous enough to write about such an emotionally taxing subject matter, and for doing it very well.

As with any work of fiction, the author presents us with a story arc that holds true to the traditions of writing. In other words, the book will not leave you feeling bad.

As always, I will be eagerly awaiting her next book.

4 1/2 out of 5 stars, bravo!

First off this book starts off with a hard subject. If anyone has a hard time dealing with suicide be sure to read the book description and decide if it is right for you. This book is masterfully written, making you feel the desperation, pain, and helplessness at the very beginning. The cry for release bleeds off the pages and you want nothing more than to strip the gun from Danny's hand and lead him away to save him from his desperate act. This book is heartrendingly poignant and yet it is more.

The book starts off with Danny Morris committing an act of desperation by taking his own life. It puts your mind and heart in a place that Kate, Fin, Max, Lacey and Gavin have been living for the past few years. These 5 friends have been meeting up at the beach house, owned by Danny's parents, every year on the anniversary of his death. They get together in the hopes of making sense of what happened, to cope with his death, to deal with the anger, and even some guilt, and to eventually heal the wound his being gone had left behind. It also became a way of keeping their friendship with each other close, especially when one of them seems to be slipping into a deep dark pit of despair and not asking for help, not letting his friends know he was in trouble... just like Danny.

This trip each one of Danny's friends go on a journey of discovery. They discover secrets that are hard to swallow and some truths are revealed that are hard to take, but they also find new beginnings and hope, they only have to let go and reach for it.

This is such a true to life story it makes your heart hurt for the characters. You feel each painful breath and each tearful moment. The times that made your heart sing, sang all the louder because it was the light shining on their lives that you was looking for. This was a wonderful work that I will be recommending.

Life has a funny way of getting in the way of my reading these days, so it takes an amazing book to keep my interest and have me come back to read it whenever I'm able to find the time. Between, Before and After is exactly that sort of book. Every time I sat down to read it, it was like coming home to old friends. I knew exactly where I was, what had happened and I fell back in with these characters like I had never left. If only I had that experience with other books!

Amanda has an easy way with dialogue and description that just transported me to the beach house as though I'd been there all my life. Voices were so clear, scenes were so very vivid in my mind. I fell in love with Finn and I wanted to hold Max and just shield him from his pain every time he was on the page. These weren't just characters, they were friends and I felt I was grieving with them over the loss of Danny. My own daughters have lost close friends in the past year and I will be passing this book on to them as I believe they will relate on so many levels to the emotional roller coaster ride this book takes you on.

You truly feel the depth of their pain, the intensity of their anger...and the feelings of frustration and helplessness they felt at being unable to have stopped what happened hit home all too well. I found myself itching with excitement as love blossomed for Finn and I shed many a tear too as I watched friendships buckle, yet hold firm in the end. The ending had me smiling and sad that the journey was finally over at last.

You absolutely have to do yourself a favour and read this book! Invite these characters into your home and your heart! You'll be all the more richer for it.

Wow. This book drained me... (and, I mean that in a good way).

Between Before and After is riveting, emotional, and brilliantly written . It tells of what happens to those that are left in the wake of a suicide. Just be warned that this is not a light read. It will pull at your heart strings and leave your heart hurting for those left to live in the aftermath of Danny. I absolutely loved Amanda Dick’s, Absolution, so I just couldn’t wait to start this one.

What are the first thoughts that pop into your head after reading the blurb? I couldn’t stop thinking:

1. I can’t wait to find out what the “shocking discovery” is, and I probably have to wait until the end – argh, not sure I can wait that long………..

2. I’m going to be really upset if we don’t find out why Danny did it.

These thoughts turned this into a page-turner for me. Just like Absolution, I couldn’t tap the Kindle pages fast enough. But, reading Between Before and After was much more than finding out the answers. Amanda creates characters that are human, and you can’t help but become attached to them and what they are living through. Throw in a great story and fabulous writing and…… voila, you have a story that is certainly hard to put down.

Amanda handled a very difficult subject with grace and understanding. This is one of those books I love because there aren’t many out there like it, and it’s the perfect book when you’re in need of something original and darn good!

I was so excited going into this book. I follow this author on her Facebook page, and had seen so many amazing teasers that really drew me in.

"Three years ago, Danny Morris left behind a gun, a tonne of questions and a gaping hole in the lives of those who loved him. What he didn’t leave was a suicide note."

Yeah, that's enough to make anyone curious! On the anniversary of his death his friends gather together at his parent's New Zealand beach house. Though this sounds morbid and scary and maybe not something you'd usually read I recommend you give it a shot. All of the characters are dealing with their pain in different ways, and the book truly brought so many emotions out in me. I was a little confused at some points, but that happens when there are so many characters I suppose. I don't feel like it took too much away from the book.

I have to say, the writing style of the author so made the book. It feels like Amanda Dick was sitting in front of me telling this story. It flows that smooth. I feel like this is one of those books that needs to be written. It's not just about Danny, it's about the people left in the aftermath. The ones he left behind. Their gut-wrenching, unbearable pain. Their struggle to move on when they are just as lost and confused as when the bullet echoed. This beautiful, heart-wrenching story is one that will stay with me for a long time. To fans of books that make you think, about life, about death, about everything: this is a book you might just fall in love with.

*I received this book for review from the author, this in no way affected my thoughts as expressed in this review.*

This is a very touching story about 5 close friends, that get together once a year for the anniversary of a loved one who took his own life. Danny. He was like a brother to them, and to one, a lover, and I really don't think that this could have been written any better. I mourned right along with them, and I laughed when they told stories about how goofy Danny was...it was like he was my friend as well.

I liked all of the character's and really enjoyed how it was told from all of their perspectives; you got to read about how each individual was either coping or not coping with the situation, and then witness as they all came together and helped each other. That is friendship in it's truest form. This made the book flow very nicely, and kept me reading from start to finish in basically one sitting. It was the perfect read for an overcast Sunday morning/afternoon. Not only was it a book about friends reminiscing and mourning the loss of their friend, it also had a little bit of romance to go along with it. Also, what I wouldn't give to spend a week where they were staying! The scenery sounded beautiful!!!

Like the author says at the end of the book, she likes to write real people that deal with real-life situations, and I really think she nailed this one on the head. This story resonated with me because I knew someone who chose to end her life too soon, and you really do feel hopeless after the fact and beat yourself up with the “what if” factor...

This book really defines the true meaning of friendship.

I was given this copy in exchange for an honest review – Loved it, thank you!!

This book is not a light and fluffy read; it is about true heartfelt issues that have plagued this group of friends over the last three years. But will this one weekend bring them closer together or be the final straw in pulling them all apart.

Amanda Dick has written a book that has so much raw emotion, friendship and love that you can’t help but fall in love with the characters. This is their amazing story of loss, love and friendship, trying to put back the pieces of their life following the suicide of their friend Danny, three years later.

This entire book takes place over the span of three days, when the group of five friends come together to mourn the loss of their friend, remembering the good and the bad. This is supposed to be the weekend to remember their friend Danny but in reality each of the friends have their own battle that they they are currently fighting. This book slowly pulls apart the layers to help enlighten the reader to all of the history of the group as well as what they are currently battling.

I enjoyed reading this book. Amanda Dick does an amazing job conveying the characters in a light that brings their struggles and emotions to the forefront for the reader. The book is so well written that you can actually picture the scenes as if they were happening on a movie screen.

Amanda brings the characters to life with her words, so much so that as the reader you feel their pain and heartache while you are reading it. Between Before and After is an AMAZING read and I am so glad that I took the journey with Kate, Max, Finn, Gavin and Lacey….

So..let me start off by saying that I finished the book 3 days ago and am still emotionally affected by this book and trust me, that does not happen often. I have been a fan of the author's since I read her debut novel, Absolution. This book shows how her writing has improved beyond what I ever imagined. To start off, she is so talented in such a way, that she doesn't even know it. While reading this book, it was easy for me to picture everything that was happening, just like watching a movie. The story takes place at a cabin by a lake, and if I closed my eyes, I could literally smell the sap from the trees and smell the lake water.
The details were just the right touch..not too much, not too little. Just enough to leave the reader with their own imagination and interpretation.
I will state that the subject matter of this book is dark and tough to read, but honestly, it's so written so beautifully. It's a little bittersweet. I felt the anguish, the fear, the heartache. Tears streamed down my face, time and time again. It's amazing how the author can compel such emotions out of her readers. It takes true skill with words to have that affect on people.
The story revolves around Danny, who commits suicide and how his actions have affected the lives of his closest friends.I don't want to give too much away but trust me, you will want to read this book and it won't disappoint you. This is a exceptional book and her best one so far! I loved it! I can't wait to see what's next.

The main storyline of this novel follows five characters who are long-time friends connected by one dear friend, Danny, who ended his life not too long before the story takes place and how this devastation has impacted their lives.
The story begins with each friend preparing for their trip to reunite with one another to celebrate his life and their friendship, and follows them back home. There is a brief , up close and personal insight of Danny’s decision to end his life—it is intense and dreary. But all in all, it’s a hauntingly, beautiful story.
My heart was so full by the end of this read and definitely experienced quite a few tear-jerkers. There were some bits that hit home for me and felt I could relate to in some ways, which makes me believe that this book could touch many readers’ hearts who have ever lost a loved one.
What makes this book even more special is that it brings light to all areas of life and the struggles we face and how we learn to cope. Amanda Dick has a beautiful way with words and the life of each character bounces right off the page and right into your heart.
I cannot wait to read more of Amanda Dick’s books because I know I can count on her words to pump me with an everlasting readers-high that will stick with me even ages after I have read them!

Just from reading the blurb I knew this book was going to be difficult to read. Having experienced this in my own life I was nervous to start. I found myself really relating to this group of friends and understanding the struggles they all went through, asking themselves "why?". It's such a helpless feeling and you can't stop from blaming yourself. My heart broke for them all but what I adored about this story was how close they all were & that no matter what they would stick together to try and heal. It helped me see things a little different and understand that some things in life, no matter how horrible can not be explained. I want to thank the author for writing this book in such a way that was both raw but respectful. This is not an easy subject to talk about but having books such as this one makes you feel not so alone. My only complaint is I wish the ending showed more into the future. I came to care for these characters and I would love to see them all happy in their lives :) 4 Stars!

Great emotional read. Love raw, realistic characters and storylines. Excited to have a new author to follow and look forward to reading more. Wish Amanda lived in the U.S. So I could purchase signed paperbacks with normal postage:)

This was simply AWESOME!! Loved every emotional minute of it!!

This was a wonderfully written read about a sensitive subject. The characters were wonderfully flawed, heart breaking and real, everyone’s reactions were authentic, the pacing was spot on and the world building and scene setting was outstanding.

The only problem for me was that I want more, I truly feel like I know these people and I would give anything to see them down the road!!

Amanda has fast become one of my favorite authors, while I know this book with not before everyone regarding the subject matter, I highly recommend this author. She writes with a true understanding about human reactions and has a gift for writing original, real, flawed characters. If you are looking for a book filled with fluff and sex look elsewhere, but if you are looking for a book and author with true substance then look no further Amanda Dick is the one you are looking for!!

What can I even say? Amanda Dick has done it again ladies and gents!!

Between Before and After was... Sigh... A roller coaster to say the least.

This book covers the grief of 5 friends who are still attempting to deal with the sudden loss of their friend Danny. And let me just tell you, it's gripping.

From the very first page, you can't help but to be sucked in until the very end. Amanda's characters are so well developed that everything they feel, you feel it too. Every high, every low, you ride that coaster with them. Although complex in its entirety, this book was an absolute pleasure to read!

In the six hours it took me to read this book, I was completely transported from my comfy seat on the couch right into the middle of the world these characters lived in. I highly recommend this book and suggest everyone take the time to be transported the way that I was!

Congrats on another amazing book Amanda!

After reading Amanda's debut novel Absolution, I knew I was going to enjoy Between Before and After. It was beautifully written. Suicide is a topic we all grapple to understand and is not an easy subject to delve into as a writer or reader. Amanda explores the aftermath of suicide in a sensitive and heartfelt way through her characters whose close friend Danny kills himself and leaves them all wondering what they could've and should've done to stop him. Amanda's writing is character-driven, but she also gives a lovely sense of place. I can imagine the beachside holiday house, the food they ate and the drinks they drank. I am following Amanda closely and know she is working on her third novel for release in 2015. I foresee great things for this New Zealand author who is as passionate about people and writing as I am. Congratulations Amanda - another page turner.

What a great summer read for people who want commercial fiction with an edge. The story peels back the layers of grief and friendship as we watch five people gather on the third anniversary of their friend’s suicide. The characters are on different journeys through grief, and they are all struggling. It sounds grim, but it’s a hopeful read about surviving emotional trauma, the strength of the human spirit, and the bonds of friendship. The backdrop provides the perfect setting—a beach that holds special memories for the friends. I loved the scene where they’re watching a sting ray! Be warned, though, it’s a hard novel to put down.

Amanda Dick is such a wonderful story teller. I love how she tells multiple points of view and inner dialogue. There is nothing superficial about her characters. You learn their innermost feelings, secrets, and faults. I spent a lot of the book being mad at Danny for putting this group of friends through so much and leaving them no explanation. At times it was hard to read but I had to keep reading to know what happened next. The ending was great and the only complaint I have is that it wasn't longer! I want to know more about their lives after those three days ended. A great story, a must read.

This is the second book I have read from this author and I loved it. This is a story of five friends struggling and trying to come to terms with the death of one of their best friends three years previous. You can totally feel their grief and anger and frustration. Each character was totally believable and I got sucked in by each one when reading. I now want to know what happens next for them - do Gavin & Lacey start a family?, Kate & Finn what happens next for them and does Max finally get the help he needs? This is what a great story with great characters does - it leaves you wanting more.

I was unable to stop reading from the first page to the last. This tale of friendship and the demons they all have to face is a heart wrenching read which had me in tears and laughter. Amanda has expertly brought to life these amazing characters who I connected with instantly. I have a real soft spot for Finn but all the characters worked so well together as real friends do. Having read Absolution and loved that too, Between Before and After is by far my favorite of the two. Skillful writing at it best. Well done Amanda :)
