True Love #3

The Love Algorithm

Rate this book
At 28, with a Ph.D under her belt and a meteoric rise to head of Research and Development at Mercer Robotics, Reese feels her decision to put her career first has worked out pretty well for her. Sure, she doesn’t have many personal relationships to speak of, but she does love her team and they like her too.

So when she’s called to the Big Boss’s office and told she will be looking after his son while he does a rotation in her lab, she’s not thrilled that her hard work and achievements have boiled down to being a glorified babysitter – especially to a billionaire playboy with zero experience of mechanical engineering.

But then tall, blond Thomas walks into her office, and Reese realizes this assignment is going to be even harder than she thought. Because the CEO’s son is not only extraordinarily gorgeous, chiseled, and charming… he’s also on course to become her new boss one day, and so extraordinarily out of bounds. As the pair get to know each other, can Reese hold her nerve and her beliefs, or will she fall victim to the billionaire charm?

A gorgeously funny enemies-to-lovers, work-place rom com, perfect for fans of Sarah Adams, Lynn Painter and Ali Hazelwood.

Camilla is an engineer who left science behind to enter the whimsical realm of romantic fiction.

Reese, a brilliant mind at the helm of Research and Development in Mercer Robotics, finds herself facing an unexpected twist in her career trajectory. Suddenly tasked with babysitting the CEO's son, Thomas, she's thrust into a whirlwind of chaos that threatens to disrupt her meticulously crafted world. But oh, what a delightful chaos it is!

Initially, I admit, I was a tad apprehensive. The setup seemed familiar, almost predictable. Yet, as I delved deeper, I found myself ensnared by Isley's masterful storytelling. The anticipation built steadily as Thomas and Reese danced around each other, their chemistry crackling in the air like electricity on a stormy night.

Ah, but when they finally collided in those decadent scenes in Roma, the tension was palpable, my friends! I found myself clinging to each word, unable to tear myself away, much to the detriment of my intended bedtime. For who needs sleep when there's a love story as captivating as this?

This book is so darn charming and witty! I mean, it made me giggling one moment and swooning the next. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a feel-good romance that will leave you grinning like a lovesick fool!

I adored The Love Algorithm, it was a nice, light-hearted, and fun story.

Thomas Mercer is the future CEO of his family's firm, but to prove to his father his skills he has to know better every branch of the company. So he starts at the robotic department working alongside Dr. Reese Campbell.

I loved Reese and Thomas, they come from different worlds, she is this smart and cute robotic genius, while he is a loyal and outgoing man. They didn't know much of each other lives and jobs, but soon enough they realize they share a good companionship and a deep attraction.
I was rooting for them the whole time, because their journey is amusing and they have a sparkly relationship since their first encounter.

Camilla Isley wrote a delicious and relatable slow burn that put me in a very good mood, I highly recommend it.

I feel bad giving a 1-star rating to a book I requested, but this was sadly not for me. Given the title, the cover design and the fact this is a STEM romance, they're obviously going for an Ali Hazelwood vibe and so I was expecting something along those lines but this nothing like Hazelwood's books.

It tries to be, sure, but it fails.

An office romance will only work for me if both main characters at least try to act professional throughout, but this includes an (involuntary) office striptease and a (voluntary) sex session that leads to a sex tape being made. You can see where I'd have trouble taking these people seriously.

It's lust at first sight between Reese and Thomas, but despite this she politely asks him to back off given that he's set to be the future CEO of the company and so will be her boss one day (fair request, and this was back at the beginning when I thought the book had potential). Thomas completely ignores this request and continues to flirt with her and basically stalk her, as he goes along on an overseas work trip without being invited.

That's not a romance, that's sexual harassment.

I was doubly excited about this book because the FMC is the head of R&D in a robotics and automation company, and I also work in automation and robotics. But besides K-2P, her personal robot, there is nothing much of interest in that field being shown.

There's no depth to the story or to any of the characters. It's the final book in a series, and the characters from those previous romances show up but I don't feel the urge to pick up book 1 and 2.

Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for this digital ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was a really sweet, nerdy and cute romance.

I loved the set up for this one and who doesn't love the one bed trope popping up 🙈. I also really enjoyed having a romance that was fade to black because I think most romances are now inundated with smut and no plot. But The love algorithm had a really fun set up and chemistry between the characters which didn't just rely on smut. I also immediately loved Thomas, his teasing was 👌🏻. I didn't love Reese as much and I can't quite put my finger on why but I struggled to connect with her as much as Thomas.

There were a few things that unfortunately didn't work for me, but that is entirely personal preference. For example, although the droid was cute and fun I didn't love how at times it took away from the characters natural progression, for example, Thomas and Reese naturally finding things about each other for their own conversations would have been preferred for me. At times the droid would just reel of information about Reese to Thomas which would have been nice to have it pop up in their own conversations with each other. It just felt too easy at times.

Another thing, is it was a little slow to start, from the synopsis you kind of know how the story will begin but it felt like quite a while before the Thomas and Reese actually met.

I had a fun time reading this one and definitely would be interested in reading more Camilla Isley. Thank you so much to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Love Algorithm is the 3rd book in the True Love Series, and in my opinion, the best one.

Reese Campbell, an intelligent 28-year-old is the head of R&D at Mercer Robotics. One day she is called in by her Big Boss and is told she will be basically babysitting her boss's son, Thomas Mercer, as he does rotations within the company.

Considering I wasn't a huge fan of the first book, I was a bit sceptical when reading this. However, this book changed the way I view Camilla Isley's writing. Her characters were fun, and I did not want to put the book down.

As a woman in STEM, this book did not make me cringe excessively like other STEM romances do, which is a huge win!

K-2P is an icon and now I want a sassy droid.

So, despite me raving on about how I liked this book, why is it not a 5-star read?

* The extreme level of objectification towards Thomas from Maria (lets reverse their genders, doesn't look so good)
* The unnecessary conflict in the last bit of the book and third act breakup
* They really jumped straight into the feelings

“Yeah, yeah, you’re quite the charmer.” Tilt of the head. “You don’t look too charmed.”“I find your bubbly personality irking.”“I find your constant scowls cute.”

This was such a cute, lighthearted and easy read! I loved Reese and her strong, smart and independent personality. She was very much like me so I could relate with her the most. Thomas was exactly the right fit for her because he was her complete opposite and that's what she needed in her life. I loved how he left her those swoony little notes, that part was adorable! Also, I liked the fact that due to their situation at the workplace, there was no unnecessary drama or a third act breakup because I was definitely expecting it but I was so glad when nothing of that sort happened. I really liked the chemistry between Thomas & Reese, the way they knew that they were attracted to each other and didn't waste time in denying it was great. But still I felt like the book was short and the ending was kind of abrupt. Otherwise, it would've definitely been a five star read for me.

I guess I brought it on myself, assuming it’s a STEM romance novel, despite the word “billionaire” provided right in the description. I’m of opinion that billionaire romances are ridiculous, completely unrealistic and are romanticising the billionaire class while ignoring their contribution to the economic disparity and worker exploitation and this novel has not changed my mind. On the contrary, it added sexual harassment, workplace misconduct and disrespect towards women to the mix.
What I appreciated about this book:
- Reese and her intelligence, skills and knowledge. She’s a good representation of STEM education in romance literature;
- droid K2P and its advancement. It was written in a charming and funny way, character immediately likeable though tad unrealistic;
- science was ok.
What I didn’t appreciate about this book:
- Thomas and his personality, ideas and approach. He was overly confident, always thought his way so the best and basically ignored the requests of Reese to leave her alone;
- blatant disregard for boundaries, for appropriate treatment of coworkers. As mentioned earlier, FMC (despite being charmed by MMC) requested to cease the advances and flirtation. He ignored it. The whole situation was showing position, power dynamic and class imbalance and lacked any kind of reflection on what’s appropriate.
- letting the MMC get away with inappropriate behaviour because he was handsome and rich;
- the whole sex tape in the office and how much worse it was for FMC than MMC,
- the whole Italian conference trip, where the FMC didn’t tell or invite MMC to the conference and he invited himself, acting like a stalker.

To me the whole novel is pretty much Thomas being rich and powerful and doing whatever he wants despite it being objectively wrong, being excusable because handsome, attractive , rich and interesting to Reese. I find it very cringy

"The Love Algorithm" by Camilla Isley is a delightful romantic comedy that combines humour, charm, and a touch of workplace drama.

At 28, Reese has achieved significant success as the head of Research and Development at Mercer Robotics. Her dedication to her career has paid off, but her personal life is lacking. When she's tasked with looking after the CEO's son, Thomas, while he works in her lab, Reese is less than thrilled.

Thomas, a billionaire playboy with no engineering experience, presents a challenge for Reese. However, as they spend more time together, Reese finds herself drawn to Thomas's charm and charisma. As their relationship develops, Reese must navigate the boundaries between work and romance, all while resisting Thomas's undeniable allure.

This enemies-to-lovers workplace rom-com explores themes of ambition, love, and the challenges of balancing personal and professional life. Isley's writing captivated me with its charm and plot, and I found myself thoroughly enjoying the interactions between Reese and Thomas.

One of the standout aspects of this novel is the character of Reese. As a strong, intelligent, and successful woman in a male-dominated field, she is a refreshing protagonist who is easy to root for. Thomas, while initially perceived as a typical arrogant billionaire, surprises with his genuine charm and respect for Reese.

The witty banter, playful interactions, and Star Wars references add to the enjoyment of the story, creating a light-hearted atmosphere that keeps the pages turning. Additionally, the inclusion of the K-2P robot with AI, created by Reese, adds an extra layer of fun and entertainment to the narrative.

While some elements, such as the objectification of Thomas by Reese's female colleagues and the third-act breakup, may not work for all readers, overall, "The Love Algorithm" is a fun and engaging read that I would recommend to fans of contemporary romance looking for a quick and enjoyable escape.

I would give this book 4 stars.

Such a fun read! I loved the main characters, especially Reese…got to love a strong, intelligent and successful woman in a male dominated world such as robotics! I also loved that Thomas wasn’t your typical arrogant womanising billionaire and I really grew to like him. My favourite character had to be the robot though…the sassy attitude and quick comebacks made me giggle! It was great to see old characters from other books in the series make appearances as well. If you’re looking for a feel good, easy read romance then look no further!

Female Grumpy vs male Sunshine

Dr. Reese Campbell is an extreme introvert who is socially maladjusted. Not quite as bad as Sheldon Cooper from the TV show, The Big Bang Theory, but close. Her BFF is K-2P, a droid that she has continued to tinker with since she first created it as a young teenager in college. K-2P is closer in appearance to R2-D2, rather than C-3PO (from Star Wars), and in fact he was modeled after them. He is humanoid in that he displays intelligence, creativity and emotions, such as sarcastic wit, affection, irritability, and loneliness, while carrying on intelligent, interactive conversations with Reese. He also enjoys watching science fiction movies with her. In spite of her many accomplishments, Reese is only 29, since she was accelerated all throughout her formal education, which includes a bachelor's in mechanical engineering, a master's in mechatronics, and a PhD in applied robotics. She has been working for four years in her dream job, in Research and Development of Mercer Robotics (MR), and has been head of that department the past two years. She is quite worried on the day she gets an email from the boss of her boss's boss, Nolan Mercer, the CEO of the umbrella corporation, Mercer Industries (MI). Mr. Mercer wants to have a one-on-one meeting with her, which is totally unprecedented for Reese. She has never seen him before except from a distance, because he is too far above her in the corporate pecking order. Her boss is the General Director of MR, and his boss is the CEO of MR. She has clearly stated in her personnel file that she is not interested in eventually being promoted to either position, because she would be unable to keep designing and helping to construct robotic equipment, so he can't be calling her up to the head office to discuss a promotion. And it is not boasting, but simple fact, that she is too good at her current job for him to consider firing her. So what else could he possibly have to say to her?

Thomas Mercer has been working the past seven years for his billionaire, CEO father, Nolan Mercer, since he completed his bachelor's in business administration and an MBA. His age is not specifically stated, but doing the math, he would be around 31 years old. He is head of corporate communications for MI and, as such, he is the handsome, articulate, charismatic public face of this New Jersey corporation, who acts as its spokesperson to the media. So far, this PR work has been enjoyable, though mostly unchallenging. His older brother, Gabriel, has never had any interest in working for their father and is busy building his own business empire. Therefore, Nolan has been planning for some time that Thomas would take over for him when he retires, which may not be too far off, since Nolan is currently in his early 60s. Thomas knows all this, but he is still shocked when Nolan sits him down, after the ritual, Sunday, family brunch at his parents' mansion, and notifies Thomas that he will be taking over leadership of MR. Its current CEO is a brilliant engineer as well as an outstanding business person, and Thomas is shocked that Nolan would slot him into a position that he is woefully unprepared for. Nolan explains that, if Thomas has any hope of effectively stepping into Nolan's top-dog position as CEO of MI down the road, he must obtain relevant experience. It makes no sense for Thomas to move directly from a relatively simple job in communications to the complex career of CEO.

When Reese meets with Nolan Mercer, and he informs her that the CEO of MR is retiring, she is initially worried that he might pressure her to fill the vacancy, until he states an even even more appalling alternative. In a blatant act of nonsensical nepotism, he is determined to hand the job to his totally unqualified son, Thomas. In addition, as the cherry on top of a dung sundae, he wants Thomas, over the next 18 months before the current CEO formally retires, to rotate through every department within CR, starting with her department. Mr. Mercer believes, since Reese does not want the CEO position, that she will be the only department head in MR who will not have knives out to sabotage Thomas. Reese internally shudders at the thought of becoming a glorified babysitter, whose ghastly assignment is to keep "hand-feeding the family prince from his silver spoon."

This romantic comedy is written in the alternating first-person points of view of Reese and Thomas, which is unusual for this author, who typically writes single-POV, chick-lit romance. Each of them is adorable, and the flirtatious repartee between the two of them is frequently laugh-out-loud funny. The droid, K-2P, has the personality of a precocious child and adds a lot of humor to the story.

Multiple popular romance tropes appear in this story, including: opposites attract, workplace romance (including a company rule that bosses cannot fraternize with their subordinates), STEM FMC, forced proximity, slow burn, and billionaire MMC. Each of these alone is capable of creating sufficient, believable romantic conflict in the story, but there is also an underlying, serious career issue for Reese. She has worked very hard to obtain respect from her male coworkers in a male-dominated field, and she knows very well that, if she gets romantically involved with Thomas, as her future boss, she will be misogynistically persecuted as having, as the patriarchal, toxic-masculinity saying goes, "slept her way to the top."

This romance is basically PG. There is no cussing, no binge drinking, and no sex on the page.

I obtained both an ebook and audiobook version of this novel through Hoopla. There is a female narrator who narrates the chapters from Reese's POV and a male narrator who narrates the chapters from Thomas's POV. This means that the FMC and MMC sound different every other chapter. As is typical in these situations, the female narrator is terrible with male voices and the male narrator is terrible with female voices. In the case of this particular male narrator, his falsetto for Reese is so grating that I couldn't keep listening and reverted entirely to the ebook.

I rate this 1 star for the audiobook and 3.5 stars for the novel, rounded to 4 stars.

A cute and enjoyable read with a slow start.

The Love Algorithm is a fun workplace enemies-to-lovers story. The beginning felt a bit slow to me, but it picked up pace and ended up being an enjoyable read. Reese, 28 and holding a PhD, finds herself assigned to babysit her boss’s son—a billionaire playboy with no engineering experience. The dynamic between them makes for some entertaining tension and sparks.

Overall, it’s a lighthearted and charming book, perfect for fans of the trope.

This book made me literally feral. I couldn't put it down. Thomas stole my heart in Not in a Billion Years and he shattered it in this book, ruining all future book boyfriends for me.

The tension between these two was so high, those scenes in the hotel in Roma where such a slow burn that I was about to scream, while nibbling at my fingers wanting for more and not being able to drop the book until I got it. Camilla Isley, I blame you for making me doze off half the next day at work.

It had a few of my favorite tropes:
-office romance
-billionaire romance
-secret love notes
-only one bed
-enemies to lovers -ish

Thomas's story was my most anticipated in the series and this novel didn't disappoint.

4.5 rounded up. I've really grown to love Camilla Isley's characters and stories, especially her STEM women. In The Love Algorithm, brilliant Reese worked her tail off to become head of research and development for the robotics department of a huge company. She's immersed in hard-core science and making big-time discoveries, even coding and developing her own AI droid (who is hilarious if maybe a bit scary and the perfect addition to the book). Her latest assignment? Showing the ropes to the boss's son, Thomas, so he can prepare to become head of the entire department. What?

But Thomas is so instantly endearing, and major sparks fly between them from the first meeting (which was also hilarious). He's quickly (and unapologetically) smitten, but won't make any moves beyond flirting, given he's her future boss and there's a strict policy in place. And Reese has worked so hard for a position, especially being a woman in STEM, that hooking up with the boss would quickly torpedo her career. But when has a policy/career-suicide ever stopped true love in a rom-com???

Loved Reese and Thomas, getting to see glimpses of the characters from the first two books in the series, and how loving and respectful they were to each other. Loved the story, nothing too annoying happened, and it was a lot of fun.

Rating: 4.5
Steam: Almost none (closed-door/fade to black)
Themes and Tropes: STEM heroine, workplace, boss/employee, he falls first, proximity

Working as head of R&D at Mercer Robotics at only 28, Reese has the job she dreamed of and her own personal project, a sassy robot as sidekick. After meeting with company CEO, she has now gained a babysitting project to train the CEO's MBA son to grasp the projects well enough to lead the division in less than two years. His first stop will be with her group. This was an entertaining and fast read. Both her character and the boss's son are definitely engaging, but the true star is the robot. And I will circle back to read the first two books in this series. Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

3.75 rounded up to 4 ⭐

this book is everything it says it is except being an enemies to lovers. there wasn't really any animosity or hostility between them to make them enemies...

this book is about Reese who is this smart, hot, and kind of lonely woman who omg has finished her PhD and is even the head of a department all at 29!! if that isn't impressive, idk what is. it is about her romance with hot, smart and charismatic Thomas who is the son of the president of the huge company Reese works in- IF YK YK because we all know how the plot goes😏

it's been a while since I've read af cute romance like this and I have to say this had me giggling, squealing and kicking my feet in the air because this book had NO business being so sweet so wholesome. there was so many element of this that were just so swoonworthy, everyone need to read this!!

some of my notes while reading this:

the robot is SO CUTEE what a nice touch. yk how people say a kid in a book can make or break it? a robot in a book can make or break it because k-2p was amazing. he was so witty, sarcastic and the way he delivered facts- 🤌🏾

all the side characters are soo great, especially gothic Maria and k-2p🤣😭😭

smiling, laughing, giggling with my feet in the air rn😂😭😭

the TENSIONN was THERE and I could feel it too

the notes he's writing for her- I'M SWOONINGGG😩

THE NOTES?- STILL SWOONING

Thomas's relationship with his family is so funny🤣🤣

how will you have a fully cognizant conversation when you're "asleep"? that's so unrealistic

omgg the star wars puns🥹🥹 even tho im not a star wars fan and i don't understand it

I don't understand any of the science in this but im eating it all up while sending my thanks to God that I don't offer sciences😭

Thomas's dad, Nolan, is such a G

this is closed door, hmm I don't know how I feel about that

I have some difficulty with characters who are a little too perfect to be real, but for goodness sake the genre is what it is and you are not supposed to immediately fall in love with someone who is not physically perfect and highly intelligent. But the little robot is cool as hell, however unbelievable it is.

This was a decent, light-hearted read. Charming and cozy, but not my type of book.

I’m not a fan of insta-love in contemporary romance. I also found Thomas almost… too polite, confident, and diplomatic?? That’s probably a crazy thing to say. This is marketed as an enemies-to-lovers pairing, and unfortunately, this is just not. There’s trepidation from Reese in the beginning of their interactions, but just nothing close to what I consider proper enemies-to-lovers (a hard trope for contemporary anyways). Most of the conflict was used purely for plot movement, which is fine, but it didn’t really sit well with me since some of the conflict was related to workplace harassment???

In terms of commitment, I would say this is a very low-commitment book. You can pick up and put down and it’s easy to get back into the flow of the story. Fun, light-hearted, and comfortable to read but not really containing anything that would compel me to read the rest of the series.

In my opinion this is my favorite book in the True Love Series by Camilla Isley. I've been lucky enough to read each of these books and i love the series. This was such a cute and easy read. I loved how the FMC Reese was such a strong character. I love that she is portrayed as a smart and independent woman in STEM. There was great chemistry between Thomas and Reese. Such a wonderful build up to their relationship. Absolutely loved this!

The way Camilla Isley’s books get better and better each time! This author never misses!

This book follows Reese, a successful career-focused woman, who feels content until she’s assigned to “babysit” the CEO’s son, Thomas, who is set to become her boss. Despite his charm, Reese struggles to maintain boundaries as they get to know each other, questioning her beliefs and feelings along the way.

I was very much looking forward to Thomas’ book (3rd in the series) and it did not disappoint! I was so immerse in the story that I didn’t even realise I was finishing the book and that’s when you know it was a fantastic book— it even felt too short for me!!! This was such a fun, lovely and swift read. You can always count on Camilla Isley to deliver engaging romantic comedies!

I feel like I always say the same things when reviewing this author's books but it’s just because I really, really enjoy this author’s writing extremely and I know I’ll love whatever she writes. Outstanding mention to K-2P (the droid the FMC designed) because it was hilarious!

Title: The Love Algorithm By Camilla Isley

Release date: October, 8th, 2024

4.5 Stars

After reading this, I want a K-2P of my own!

This enemies-to-lovers workplace rom-com explores themes of ambition, love, and the challenges of balancing personal and professional life. Some of my Favourite tropes.

Isley's writing captivated me with its charm and plot.I would most definitely recommend this if you like your cute romances.

4.5 stars really!

I really enjoyed the last book in this series, Baby, One More Time, and this one even had some of those characters for us, which I loved! Reese was a fun STEM character, in charge of a robotic department of the company that Thomas’s father was the CEO of. Her department sounded like a bunch of fun nerdy people, I’d love to hang out with them! And her AI robot, K-2P, was hilarious! Such a fun part of the story.

Thomas was definitely the sunshine to Reese’s grumpy, although it wasn’t really that she was grumpy. She was just a woman trying to make sure she’d proven herself in a mostly male dominated field. Thomas was more than just sunshine though. He was really a genuinely nice guy, all around charming and easy to be around as well as work with.

They fought their attraction, both having such good reasons for it, and I love that Thomas seemed to fall first in this story. While Reese definitely felt the attraction pretty quickly, she kept him at arm’s length for good reasons based on her past as well as her career. We got a bit of a hint at what would kind of become their big dramatic third act issue with the very first paragraph of the story. But when it happens, it still surprised me because I’d kind of forgotten about it as the story went on and no further mention was made. And I love the way all of the relationship was wrapped up for our HEA at the end. I like that we may have been unsure about Thomas’s family, but the way it worked out was realistic and I loved it.

Another great story from this author, but now I need to go back because I missed the first one in this series, and I need to know Thomas’s brother Gabriel’s story with his girlfriend Blake.

I did not like this at all. It started out okay- I liked the idea of K-2P a lot, and the initial premise did seem promisingly fun. But, unfortunately, this quickly spiraled into a instalust, unprofessional workplace romance that just was not my thing at all. If you enjoy workplace romances with a power imbalance, you may like it, but Thomas's advances just icked me out.

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!
