The Guild Codex: Warped #3.5

More Than a Little Warped

Rate this book
As a conman-turned-MPD-Agent, I'm fairly new to the whole "upholder of justice" thing, but even for me, there are some lines you just don't cross. Agent Söze of the MPD's Internal Affairs department, on other hand, seems determined to slime his way across every ethical line in existence like an over-sized eel on a power trip.

Can you tell I don't like this guy?

While he's dismantling the precinct and hunting down rule-breakers among the staff—a category which my partner and I definitely fall into—a veritable storm of crazy is spreading through the city. Local troublemaking guild, the Crow and Hammer, has been accused of harboring a demon mage, and while I'm not sure what to believe, I've got bigger problems to tackle.

That is, until a certain notorious rogue druid calls me up about that big IOU I accidentally promised him. Now I have no choice but to dive into the chaos—though if I can knock Söze down a peg or two in the process, it'll be worth it.

The Guild Codex: Warped #3.5 is an action-packed novella that tells Kit's side of the deadly final showdown from Damned Souls and a Sangria.

So the conspiracy and corruption inside MagiPol, the mythic version of the police force, continues 😳 I'm too hyped up to not immediately continue with the next book after this novella, so it seems my weekend will be spent with Kit Morris and his possibly deadly mind-warping shenanigans 😳

It seems I'm back within the "Annette Marie fangirl" territory and I couldn't be more happy about it 😍😍🫡

05/21/2024: Reread. (Audiobook!)

I loved this novella. I loved that it filled in the blanks about what was happening with Kit, Lienna, and Captain Blythe during the same time when the Crow and Hammer were facing down demon mage claims and battling the Keys of Solomon. I loved the cameos and further insights to other characters in this world. If you are a fan of the series and the world that this series resides in then this novella is a definite must-read.

I actually really enjoyed this novella, which initially surprised me but perhaps it's partly because Kit is starting to grow on me. But I think it's also because he's matured a little. Yes, he still cracks jokes at every opportunity and yes, I miss a lot of the pop culture references. But he's also started realizing the power that he holds and the consequences of wielding that power. He's also got a crush on the Crystal Druid, which makes me laugh. Despite knowing that Zak has a huge bounty on his head and that it's Kit's responsibility to arrest him when they cross paths, Kit has used his brain and realizes that everything having to do with the Crystal Druid is a lot more than it seems and he's willing to give him a chance. But I think it's also because Kit and Lienna KNOW there's something that's not right, and in this one, Soze going off the reservation is raising all sorts of red flags. This novella overlapped with a section of the last Tori series and when I read it, Kit seemed to come out of nowhere. Here we find out why he did what he did and I just really liked the various threads from the different series being referenced. It was very well done. Overall, this sets us up very nicely for the next Warped book, although I have to get through the Crystal Druid series first (not a problem!). I'm curious how much Kit and Lienna will show up in the Crystal Druid series, since by now, the Demon and Spellbound series are both complete.

Set in Annette Maries Guild Codex world, More than a Little Warped offers a different perspective on some the last books of the Guild Codex Spellbound and Guild Codex Demonised series'. At 126 pages it's short but not too short. And it gives a nice lead into the next story in the Warped series.

Buddy read with RHR. Wow. Soze is a dick. Poor Kit getting controlled. Nice to have all the puzzle pieces together for Robin, Tori and now Kit's role. I did like Zak pulling the strings. I'm with Kit on the latin terms. compared to Tori it did seem more laid back and less chaotic timing wise. I'm curious why Soze isn't affected by Kit, although not looking forward to the big boss BS that will follow. The kittens were adorable.

This review is also featured on Behind the Pages: More Than a Little Warped

More Than a Little Warped takes place at the same time as Damned Souls and a Sangria. So make sure you have read it beforehand. This novella is a peek into Kit’s side of the story and his opinion of Tori never fails to impress. His movie lines do not land well and he is so intimidated by her. From a reader who lived in Tori’s mind for an entire series, seeing how others perceive her is fun.

This was a story full of action and Kit hijinks. Over time Kit is growing more as a character and stretching the boundaries he keeps himself within. When permitted to go full out on the MPD with probable cause, he pulls no punches and it is hilarious. Lienna even starts to bend the rules and surprise Kit and the reader.

More Than A Little Warped is a great snapshot into the MPD and the internal issues they have to deal with as well as the outside. The longer readers stay within Kit’s world, the more about the MPD will be revealed. And they might not be exactly as strict as they want people to believe. I’m looking forward to more of the Warped series!

I’d been waiting for this one for AGES!!!! And this was a satisfactory conclusion to the Spellbound arc of the Guild Codex Universe, interweaving Kit’s story within the broader framework of the Crow and Hammer chaos.

There was so much more I would have wanted from this novella, a few key meetings that I was disappointed we didn’t get to see, and the prose felt a little too juvenile for my taste (am I outgrowing Annette Marie? Please no please no), BUT I WILL SAY THIS. I will forever and ever be in awe at Annette’s plotting skills and the technical brilliance she shows in tying in multiple layered storylines and cameos in a way that all the stories interconnected so perfectly and yet HELD THEIR OWN.

I am so excited to follow Kit along his journey and I hope to see so much more of him!

This came about 2 years too late cause my goldfish ass memory hardly remembers the guild codex series. It's been a real minute since I read the books, man.

But that doesn't mean it isn't nice to be back in the world. I'm still annoyed Tori has to be in literally everything but I'll manage. Getting used to Kit is another challenge, but reading this novella felt like talking to my friend and that thought made it more enjoyable. I'm looking forward to reading his next adventure! Might even fuck around and read the entire series again 👀

More Than a Little Warped is set between books 3 and 4 in this series. While it is shorter than the rest of the books, I do feel it's an important read as the events in book 4 build onward from what happened here and I am glad I decided to read it first. Due to circumstances I had to read this one on my computer which diminished my enjoyment a bit as I don't like reading ebooks on there and I struggled to get into the story due to that and it took me way longer than normal to finish.

More Than a Little Warped takes place during the events of the last book in the Spellbound series and contains some spoilers for that series. As it had been a while ago since I read that series this book didn't read as smoothly as I was trying to remember what was going on with Tori and the guys. And while there are hints enough the focus here is on Kit's point of view and having only his side only tells part of the story. I do think my enjoyment would be greater if I had been able to read it shortly after finishing that series when those events were still fresh in my mind.

Despite the large tie in with the two other series and giving a fun look to what Kit is up during that time, this book is also an important one for Kit's story. It introduces Söze and sets up the type of character he is and the start of the trouble he is causing in the precinct. I only just started book 4, but it takes place shortly after the end of this one and refers the events in this book a lot so far.

I liked reading about Kit again and seeing him use his warp powers as well as some movie references as usual. There are some nice scenes with Lienna as well. I am glad book 4 was waiting for me after this one so I could dive into more of this series.

To summarize: More Than a Little Warped is a novella set between books 3 and 4 in this series and is an important bridge between the two books. It also takes place during the final book in the Spellbound series and show what Kit is up to during those events. I had some trouble getting into this book due to having to read this on my computer instead of an ereader. I struggled to remember the events from Spellbound and what was going on there and because it's been a while since I read that that made remembering those events and enjoying this book a bit harder. This book sets up an important plot line that continues in book 4, so I would recommend to read this novella first if you can.

Someone recommended the series or one of the authors in a Fantasy group on Facebook, and this novella was available on audio at one of the libraries I have access to.
While it was entertaining, it was not for me. The main protagonist seemed more like wish fulfillment for straight young men than a real character.

The events that occur in More Than A Little Warped is told from Kit’s point of view regarding the events Damned Souls and a Sangria (The Guild Codex: Spellbound #8). All the series in the Guild Codex world overlap and have some crossover. Something I love about the series. You can listen to each series individual but I recommend following the recommended order: Reading Order

For fans of the series, this was a treat. I loved getting things from Kit’s perspective. It gave us a clearer picture of all that went down as members of the Crow and Hammer dealt with demon mage claims and the key. Plus, we learn more about Kit, Lienna and their dealings with Captain Blythe.

The tale was action-packed with cameos from characters in the other stories. Agent Söze is stirring up trouble at the Crow & Hammer, and you would not believe what is happening at MPD’s headquarters. It brought back memories, and I enjoyed a couple of ah ha moments.

The novella was suspenseful, and chock full of humor. I listened in one sitting and while I had read the novella previously; I recommend listening. Iggy Toma does a stellar job with Kit and the other characters. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

I love Kit’s POV so much. I feel like with all his movie references and humor, this is the most lighthearted series from the Guild Codex. I love reading about his powers in action and how he’s been advancing his warps.

No joke, I had forgotten how WILD things got when Agent Söze was stirring up trouble for the Crow & Hammer. I mean, mercenaries, magic, and mayhem were only the start of it. And Kit and Lienna were in the middle of it. You know, if the middle was in MPD's headquarters.

In other words, while they were definitely involved, they were causing havoc for the bad guys behind the scenes. Or at least they were trying to move the pieces around the board (and checkmate more than a few of them) who were causing the most problems.

The good news, Kit got to shine in full-on chaos gremlin mode. The bad news, Lienna and Kit have (not purposefully) handing some very powerful magic to the bad guys. Which is bad. So bad.

Dangerous happenings are taking place, bad guys are crawling out of the woodwork, Kit's magic is wicked powerful, and Lienna's learning the fie art of bending the rules from a master. I'm talking about Kit, btw. The guy is VERY good at walking the line between bending and outright breaking said rules. *thumbs up*

Kit’s wry sense of humor is so entertaining to me. This novella is a great interlude to set the next Warped book up. I love how Kit is involved with members of the Crow and Hammer and also Zak. I Love the intermingling of the characters in the different series. I do hope we can get Söze figured out in the next book. Söze has taken over the Vancouver precinct and pushed Captain Blythe out of the way and has made a beeline for destroying The Crow and Hammer Guild. Kit and Lienna have to figure out a way to stop him.
This book contains major spoilers for the Guild Codex Spellbound series so finish that series before reading this Novella.

It's really cool seeing the other side of the big battle for Vancouver against the demon cult and understanding how the other characters got where they were because of the things in this book. The author is very good at intertwining worlds and storylines and characers to create an expansive universe.

Awesome characters

Kit is so much fun! He’s irreverent, smart, witty, talented, and he’s got a good heart. Some great overlap with other series in this universe.

Soze is a great villain. Very easy to hate. Lots of action and suspense.

This was a novella that showed us what Kit and Lienna were doing while The Crow and Hammer were under attack from the merc guild. Kit continues to be funny and the slow burn between him and Lienna smolders on. Zack had called in his favor, once it was clear that the megalomaniac, internal affairs guy, Soze, who had taken over the captain's job, was going to have the demon mage and his cohorts from the Spellbound series killed. Of course, Kit managed to get them all safely out. We learn that the mentalist with the demon that Zaheelas set free at the battle royale, wasn't controlling Soze. He is just evil and they can't figure out what his end game is. The mentalist did control Kit's mind and made him stab the captain and almost managed to get him to kill himself. They think that Soze has an artifact that makes him immune to Kit's warps. After Captain Blithe calls off the mercs, and everyone thinks they can relax at the precinct, Zack calls to ask where they're at because all hell is breaking loose and mages are dying. As soon as Kit arrives, he puts the distracted mentalist in "blackout." She can't see, hear, feel or smell anything. He lets his thoughts penetrate her mind. He gives her a taste of her own medicine and lets her know how scary it is when someone else has control of your mind. After Tori, the redhead from Spellbound, uses a spell to subdue her while she's cuffed, he lifts the warp. Once she's back to her senses, she's still shaking. He whispers to her, before calmly walking away, that she should pray that they lock her up for a long time, because he can hurt her in a thousand different ways. He knows that his power is a form of torture and has pulled back since Lienna called him on it. He's a good guy, but still is a bit morally grey. Also, Soze, has all of Lienna's portal research.
