Point of No Return

Rate this book
Fans of thrilling military romances will love Rita Henuber’s books.

Marine Major Honey Thornton is nobody’s fool, so when she’s brought in for an off-the-books mission by a manipulative two-star general, she has to wonder why. When it turns out Honey’s mission is to investigate a military contractor tied to the recent kidnappings of innocent children, she signs on immediately. Little did she know one of the first people she’d have to question was her sometime lover, Jack O’Brien.

Jack O’Brien left the CIA bitter and disillusioned and now hires himself out as a contract spy. When his brother and sister-in-law are mysteriously killed and the young daughter they left behind is targeted for kidnapping, he smells a cover-up and goes underground to find out who’s behind it all. Not sure who he can trust, the situation grows more tense when the sexy Honey starts asking questions he’s not sure he wants to answer.

With suspicion flaring on all sides and passion burning between them, Jack and Honey have to decide whether they can trust each other and bring down the people responsible, no matter how high up the chain of command it goes. Because when you’re navigating the murky political waters of the Pentagon, the CIA, and private armies, it’s hard to know who’s got your back, who’s on your side, and who’s lying to your face—and sometimes the only thing you can trust is what you know in your heart.

About the

Rita Henuber is the author of Under Fire, Under The Admiral, and No Holding Back. Her heroes and heroines are either in the military or government service because she writes what she knows—her father was in the Coast Guard and immediate family members served in every branch of the service, ranking from private to admiral and working as desk jockeys, grunts, pilots, and everything in between. Retired from government service herself, Rita now lives on the barrier island where she grew up.

My Review:
This book was so good! I've never read Rita Henuber before, but I think I have a new favorite to add to my Romantic Suspense authors list. What really set this book apart though was just how different it was written.

I don't think I have EVER read a heroine as flat-out tough as Honey. Wow, this girl can kick butt and take names....and not just physically, either. She's smart and in-your-face and completely loyal to her ideals and her team and those that she's fighting for. She's a Marine Major who works in the spec ops/investigations branch of the Marines. The book opens with her and her team on a rescue mission in Afghanistan and the entire suspense line is built up around that rescue and why those girls were kidnapped. The suspense line is incredible as it weaves in and out of political quagmire. I never knew which way it was going to go, but all of it was high flying adrenaline inducing which made it so much fun to read.

Off the page for the first half of the book (for the most part) is Jack. Jack and Honey have been involved in an affair for quite a while, but somehow he and his family are caught up in Honey's investigation and his brother and wife were murdered because of it. For the first 45% of the book, you get glimpses of Jack and hints at how he plays into all this, but not much. And he and Honey are not on the page at all until that 45% point. As a result, I HIGHLY recommend you pick up the prequel novella, No Holding Back: How Honey Met Jack...just so you can get a full understanding of the nature of their relationship. (It's a hot, sexy little read.)

Jack and Honey have both worked covert ops for quite a while. As a result, when their professional lives coincidentally collide, neither trusts each other or that coincidence. It's hard for people in this line of work to trust especially when their emotions are involved.

Everything about this book worked for me. I loved Honey and her convictions. I loved Jack and his vulnerability and hurt through the loss of his family. I loved Honey's team who stand behind her no matter what. And I loved Kara, Honey's niece, who looks to be following in her Aunt's footsteps. Everything from the back stories to the suspense story line was so expertly woven, I enjoyed every moment of reading this book.

I highly recommend this book for rom. suspense readers. Expect something a little bit different, but for me those differences worked. I will definitely be looking for more from this author.

Rita Henuber writes some of the strongest female characters in the romantic suspense genre. Her females are unapologetically smart, savvy, brave, and can compete with the male characters in almost every way. These are women you can admire for their brains and physical prowess. Her couples are truly a balanced partnership. So you can imagine with an alpha female, you're gonna have a strong alpha male as well. Because of that, the action and romance in this book is intense and incredibly erotic. The thing that I appreciate most about this book (and other Rita Henuber books) is that her heroines avoid TSTL moments. They are just too smart and strategic for that.

Thank you to Netgalley and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Wow! Point of No Return is page turning, reading way into the night novel written by Rita Henuber. It begins in what I call “an Indiana Jones” way; right smack dab right in the middle of the action. Right away you know what kind of no-nonsense-get-the-job-done person that Major Honey Thomton is going to be. She is the woman for the job even if it involves investigating her lover Jack O’Brien. This riveting read has it all, gritty realism, intriguing suspense, manipulating leaders, political deceit, and hot romance between likable but tough as nails characters along with Jack’s adorable niece, Kara. This is edge of the seat suspense at it’s best; with the emphasis on the suspense elements more than the romantic elements. While I am partial to the romance between the characters, this book really worked for me, such great writing that keeps you guessing and interested in the final outcome.
Highly recommend. For more of the background on Jack and Honey and their relationship is the prequel novella, No Holding Back.

Military romance seems to be my favourite thing to read at the moment. I love sexy alpha males and hot 'hold their own' heroines and this book does not disappoint. I enjoyed the technical details that seem to bring a scene to life and there's no shortage of steamy bits too. This fast became a book I couldn't put down.

Only one issue I had with this book and that was the phrase 'flaming fish balls' , once or twice I could have handled but it's constantly cropping up, I thought it was because the author wanted a substitute for the 'F word' , nope, I was wrong because ' f''king flaming fish balls' was in it too. This did detract from my enjoyment and so I give this book a 3.5 Stars instead of a 4. I would certainly read others by this author and I would recommend this book.

What held this book back from being a 5 for me was the gap in character development/back story that is published separately as a prequel novella, No Holding Back. I wish that I had read the prequel first, or that it was somehow incorporated into Point of No Return, as it would have enhanced the reading experience for me. Make no mistake though, Point of No Return is a roller coaster ride of the highest caliber. Ms. Henuber either has first hand knowledge or is a wonderful researcher, because everything in this book rang true. The characters were rich and multi dimensional, easy to become engaged. The pace was fast but even, there was a good balance between action and romance. It was sexy without being salacious, the sex scenes seemed to fit seamlessly into the well-plotted story.

I actually read the first chapter as a sample excerpt on a blog and one-clicked it immediately thereafter. The opening scene gripped me, and the heroine's passion never let up after that. What I enjoyed the most was the author's voice that came through in the writing. For as intense as the plot was, there were subtle touches of humor in the writing that had me chuckling out loud and made this book a genuine pleasure to read.

Full of tense intrigue and wonderful adventure, this book is my first dip into the waters of this author and one I definitely don’t regret. Kick ass action in a fast paced and dynamic storyline pulls the reader through a well written and detailed plot. A definite page turner until once finished you begin to search for more by the author.

Rec'd ARC for honest review

"point of no return" had more suspense, than romance. So if you love a suspense book with a little bit of romance thrown in, this is the book for you. Wouldn't recommend If you're after a romance/erotic read with a background of suspense.
