Abused by his father and abandoned by his mother, Prince Matthias has never known love. He dreams of the day he can leave with only the song of his veslo and his wolf companion for company. When his father’s soldiers imprison a feisty warrior from the enemy kingdom, something dormant inside him awakens and he decides to help her escape. Making him his father’s newest target.
Major Adalia knows better than anyone that those who dwell in the Kingdom of Oscuro are wicked. But after the Prince of Darkness risks his own freedom to save her, she reconsiders her beliefs. With his life now on the line, Adalia offers Matthias refuge in her home, where his sad song, alluring smile and frustrating charm draw her in.
Between longing glances, stolen kisses, and two kingdoms on the brink of war, Matthias finds himself enthralled by Adalia and her world. But as his fears of unworthiness and rejection surface, the prince must make a choice. Return to the shadows of his old life, or follow his heart by fighting beside the woman he’s falling for.
What a fantastic stand-alone and debut this is! Sarah did a magnificent job with this intriguing idea and plot of The Grey (like earth) and Lucius and Oscuro (Afterlife). While in The Grey, you choose a home realm to go to after death and your choices are Lucius, the kingdom of light, and Oscuro, the kingdom of darkness.
Adalia is a Major in the army of light and her mission is to protect the inhabitants of The Grey from the influence of Oscuro. Matthias is the Prince of Darkness and he is our tattooed, broody, musician who finds himself stuck in a realm he despises. Until Adalia is captured.
We get to follows these 2 dynamic and winged characters throughout the realms as they fight for a future of safety and forbidden love. The stakes aren’t super high and the pace is so smooth, but the connection we get to explore and the development we get to see shaped along with creative worlds of our dreams makes this story one you’ll want to add to your list. It was so nice to have a read that I felt was an angsty slow burn, adorable banter, wholesome, and still had some spice.
Tropes you may find in WSSL are dark versus light, winged immortals of all colors, a strong and compassionate FMC, an emo cinnamon roll who sings and plays an instrument, brotherly love, spice 2/5, forced proximity, touch her and 🪦, “mine”, found family.
I’m so thankful for this gifted arc from Sarah and I cant wait to read more from her!
This book is exactly what the title says. A fantasy where dark meets light, romance! (With a bit of action in there for good measure. The characters were brought to life as this story moved on. I was a little confused by the world building and who was who as so many people were in introduced in the beginning and some people are not brought back for a while. Unless you have a great memory, I suggest writing things down when you read.
I enjoyed this magical tale. You probably will, too!
Adalia, a major in the king of Lucius’s army, is kidnapped by Thorns, the evil king of Oscuro’s spies. The King of Ocurso’s son, Matthias, hides from the growing wrath and sinister plans of his father, and decides one fateful night to cause chaos for his father by helping Adalia escape back to Lucius. Adalia, once back in Lucius, cannot stop thinking about the blue eyed, dark haired prince, and a chance encounter leaves Adalia offering Matthias sanctuary in Lucius. Matthias finds more than just a sanctuary in the colorful, vibrant, joyful, and kind land of Lucius-he finds a love so pure and true. A love that shows him that he is worthy, he is loved, and that the light inside him is greater than the darkness. With a war brewing amongst the two kingdoms, can Adalia and Matthias’ love conquer the darkness?
This story is so unique and powerful! I throughly enjoyed seeing how Adalia and Matthias brought out the best in each other. The message of being worthy of love and finding the light, was such a refreshing and beautiful part of this story. I felt this message deep in my heart and soul. I absolutely loved how Matthias truly valued Adalia for the goodness, grace, kindness and pure love she gave to him unconditionally, and he saw what a rare gift this is! Adalia herself is grace, kindness, strength, and joy perfectly personified, and watching her fall in love with Matthias and seeing the true goodness of his heart underneath the darkness, was breathtaking.
This story leaves the reader with one of the most beautiful and fulfilling happily ever after!
I highly recommend this wonderful and inspiring romantasy!
Romantic Content: There is some spice in this book, however, the physical descriptiveness is very minimal and the spice scenes are heavily focused on emotions. I would put this in the mid tier level for spice. For Closed Door Modifications Skip Pages 205-207, 278-282, 285-296, 308-309, 378-386.

I saw the beautiful cover and had to read it!
Two kingdoms on the brink of war, a damaged prince of darkness and a beautiful fantasy world...
I enjoyed this read, it was more on the cozy side than I thought It would be but it was still great, the world in which the book is set was fantastic, I would happily read more in this universe and find out more about the three realms and the magic they hold.
It had super likeable main characters and I enjoyed tthe two MC's relationship, especially their banter and their slow burn angst, I love our male MC Matthias and his emo boy vibes.
The author was great at setting the scene and descriptions of the characters/scenes... especially the cooking elements, don't read this book when hungry!
Overall It was a nice quick read, you will fall for the characters and the fantasy world 🖤
Alright…. (It’s been awhile since I’ve finished or read anything since I’m in exam season hehe…) I’ve been so curious about this book since I found it yesterday and honestly I have to say I enjoyed reading it. Keep in mind that this book has between 2-3 spice scenes that last a few pages (I skipped them). I would rate this book 3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars , overall I enjoyed the book but I feel like some things were missing ?.. like I don’t know what exactly is missing but I feel like I needed more info or lore about what was going on… honestly I’m not sure…
I have this question that’s been on my mind throughout the book. How come in the Oscuro kingdom everyone has dark or black wings but in their rival kingdom people’s wings colors differ from each other ?.
Anyway .. thanks for reading my review and opinion of this book.
What first drew me to this book was the cover and the title. I love both!
I was also intrigued by the tropes. It is described as enemies to lovers, forbidden love, forced proximity and found family. However, the overall vibe of the book is rather cozy and because of that it didn’t feel like enemies to lovers or forbidden and the forced proximity was more of a choice.
In the beginning of the book, I was one hundred percent intrigued by the worldbuilding and the setup. I’ve never read anything quite like this book and I absolutely loved the concept of the world. The plot itself also had such great potential and for the first 30% I was lost to this world and the characters. There were so many things to learn, and I couldn’t help but love Matthias and feel for him. I love the good girl meets bad boy trope and their characters were perfect in the sense that their character traits and backgrounds were rooted in the worldbuilding and the plot.
In terms of spice, this is a slow-burn with one steamier scene towards the end. This is by no means a spicy read. The book focuses more on the plot and the building relationship between the two main characters.
What went wrong for me was that most of the book take place in Adalia’s kingdom which is the kingdom where everything is more or less perfect, almost too sweet. While I loved the concept of the two worlds and the character development, the author’s choice to set the plot to Adalia’s world meant there was not much tension or suspense. As a reader I didn’t feel like there were any danger and I very quickly grew tired of the dinner parties and food descriptions. I also didn’t really feel the tension or the romance between the two main characters, and some of the plot is centred around the infamous miscommunication. So, for me, this book fell a bit short. However, if you like cozy fantasy reads, you might end up enjoying this book.
When Shadows Seek Light by Sarah C. Davies is a solid three-star read that offers a fast-paced, enemies-to-lovers romance. Prince Matthias is a character you can’t help but root for, and his journey alongside Adalia, a fierce warrior, brings tension and excitement. However, while the world-building had potential, the setting often felt more mundane than magical, which sometimes pulled me out of the story.
Despite some of the characters feeling younger than expected and the plot moving quickly once Matthias and Adalia unite, it’s an easy and enjoyable read. If you’re in the mood for a lighter, quick fantasy with a romantic twist, this book delivers, and I’d be curious to see how Davies’ writing evolves in future works.

The characters didn’t resonate with me.
I pushed myself to the limit to avoid DNF’ing.

⭐⭐
The book was passable, but it won’t stick in my mind.
Although I didn’t abandon the book, my mind wasn’t fully immersed in the story.
I discovered that it was easy for me to stop reading it and not feel compelled to continue promptly.
When everything was said and done, I was unsure of my immediate opinion on this book.

If someone is actively seeking a book in this general premise, I would suggest this.
While it was good, I don’t think I’ll ever pick up this book for a second read.
If it were part of a series, I’d probably venture into the next book.
Reading it was time well-spent.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I was actively engaged in wanting to finish reading this book.
My thoughts are consumed by this book after completing it.
I want to have a physical copy as a trophy that I can display on my shelf.
I felt a strong connection and investment while reading this book, would definitely recommend.
When Shadows Seek Light is a new adult fantasy romance book. The world Sarah C Davies has created is an interesting one to explore, divided between 3 realms. The Grey (the land of the living) is separated by the veil from the dark Kingdom of Oscuro and Lucius, the Kingdom of Light. These two kingdoms are on the brink of war and the threat of this troubles the happiness of our main characters. It is a well paced, quick, easy read.
Matthias (from Oscuro) and Adalia (from Lucius)are engaging main characters. They do both read quite young and Adalia being a major sometimes felt a little unbelievable. Matthias is a cinnamon roll despite the Prince of Darkness title and you can’t help but like him. (Not Sarah’s fault but I do always picture Ozzy Osbourne when that title is mentioned). I would happily adopt both him and his wolf Bones.
There is a slightly odd mixture of almost medieval style atmosphere with some modern things thrown in. Record players and denim were slight jolts. These weren’t necessarily a huge distraction but occasionally threw me out of the moment.
I was expecting the dark to be a little more dark than it is but this was more cozy than gritty which I actually really liked once I realised. The stakes feel fairly low despite the threat of war. Violence wise nothing is too graphic.
This book contains enemies to lovers, forced proximity, found family and forbidden love.
The 5 star scale doesn’t give enough room for any nuance so I would say this was 3.75 stars rounded up to 4.
I absolutely adore this book. It was a rollercoaster coaster of emotions and I cannot tell you how many times my anxiety and stress was through the roof because of what was happening… but I love love love these two main characters and their story.
We first are introduced to The Grey… the mortal world where humans reside. The Grey has veils on either side of it… where you enter and leave the world when born and when you pass. At the age of 13… one chooses what kingdom they’re going to enter after they die and pass through the veil - the kingdom of light, Lucius, or the kingdom of darkness, Oscuro. Our two main characters both reside on this side of the veil - Adalia in Lucius and Matthias, the dark prince, in Oscuro. Adalia is a major in the light kings army and one day while on patrol, finds a Thorn, one from the dark kingdom, in The Grey where they shouldn’t be and because she is so compassionate, she returns the Thorn to their kingdom instead of killing them. This turns out biting her in the you know what when she finds herself forced into Oscuro against her will and taken prisoner. As a prisoner, we meet the handsome, dark prince who we soon learn is much different than it seems. Can Adalia escape her prison in Oscuro? Will she be able to stay away from the handsome prince? Will he be able to stay away from her? What kingdom will they fight for it comes down to it?
You will not want to miss this story… I know I won’t be able to stop thinking about it for a while.
Cozy, Sweet Fantasy Romance Found Family Forced Proximity Musician Emo/Sad MMC Army General FMC
I was really intrigued from the beginning with this book. You’ve got The Grey, which is basically Earth & the Kingdoms Lucius and Oscuro, which represent the afterlife & reminded me of Heaven/Hell.
The FMC, Adalia is a major in the Lucius (Kingdom of Light) army. Their goal is to protect people in The Grey from being deceived by Oscuro and ending up in the Kingdom of Darkness after they die.
The MMC, Matthias is the son of the king in Oscuro. So yes, the Prince of Darkness. ❤️🔥 But if that doesn’t make you swoon, he’s also a tattooed musician who isn’t like the others in his realm, especially his father.
This was such a cute, sweet romance. It’s not high fantasy where there’s a lot at stake or tons of world building to keep up with. There’s some of that but I would say the story mainly focuses on their romance & Matthias having to decide if he’s worthy of love because he doesn’t believe he is.
The banter is great, theres a good bit of angsty slow burn and the ending is super sweet & wholesome. If you’re looking for a cozy standalone romance fantasy and need a break from high stakes high fantasy, definitely read this!
“You poor little dove, locked up here in this putrid cage. Wings bound and heart broken - how will you escape?” “I am finding it very, very difficult to stay away from you.”
Overall a well-written, fast-paced, and cozy enemies-to-lovers fantasy story.
The world and the three realms seem really interesting, and I would have loved to learn more about them, including why there was a threat of war, especially The Grey, aka the land of the living, which stayed a bit of a mystery to me.
I enjoyed the enemies-to-lovers dynamic and the relationship development between Adalia and Matthias. Matthias, as the MMC, seemed like an interesting character with a difficult and dark backstory.
I would have liked to learn more about the FMC, Adalia. Getting more information about her past and how she became who she was would have helped bring more depth to her character.
If you enjoy cozy, easy-to-read fantasy books with tropes like enemies to lovers and found family, you will probably enjoy reading this book.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.
He’s the Princess of darkness, a stark contrast to her lavender brushed wings and bubbly/ optimism. Like a moth to a flame, he’s drawn to Adalia’s pure light. But, light to a creature of darkness though enticing, is dangerous. He can’t possibly be worthy of such beauty. Or so he’s been told.
Can Matthias learn to trust what the light has to offer? Can he truly believe, after years of neglect and abuse at the hands of his father/king, that he is WORTHY of it… of her?
The FMC is soft but also has such admirable strength, we love a powerful FMC!
There are elements of Christianity throughout which I loved! It’s still very much fantasy for those who don’t have the same belief system, but those that do can enjoy the parallels, and deeper meaning.
Spice : 2/5, Good angst and banter throughout.
Tropes: slow burn, enemies to lovers, Emo, witty, musical MMC, sweet and strong FMC, found family, touch her and 💀, “MINE”, virgin FMC.
This books is a beautiful spin on the afterlife. During life in the Grey (the human realm) you choose where you would like to go after your first death. You either enter Lucius the light realm or Oscuro the dark realm. Though this choice isnt the main focus, the different realms play a part in the enemies to friends to lovers type romance. They are not enemies for too long but it is a sloooowww burn. This book also reminds us that there is beauty in the darkness. It is somehow both high stakes and cozy at the same time because you can have a true death after you step into the after life.
Favorite Quotes
"Don't do that..." Matthias' eyes darkened. "Do what?" "Hide your laugh." "Why?" Matthias slowly strode towards her, and warmth crept its way into her body. His gaze pierced her soul. "Because it sounds like music ... and I love music.”
“It gave me hope that even beauty can grow in the shadows.”
"You stayed," she said. "I told you I would." Matthias smiled
When Shadows Seek Light is truly romantasy at its finest. 💜🖤
Adalia is a strong, beautiful, but truly badass FMC. Matthias is the dark and broody kind of MMC you naturally swoon over. These two are honestly so easy to fall in love with from the start. As an “Elder Emo”, if you will, of course I fell for Matthias right away. 😅😍 You can almost feel the pure love and strength these two pull from each other as their story builds. Their growth is so well developed. The wholesome banter between these two I thought was great as well.
The world building is easy to follow which I appreciate. It’s so easy for that to get out of hand, but Sarah did such a good job with it. You get a little of everything in this read - magic, world building, some drama, but also some cozy & sweet romance with a sprinkling of spice. I really loved this read! 🥺
Also, the cover is just beautiful! 🫶🏻
Tropes: enemies to lovers, found family, forced proximity, forbidden love
What a wonderful and beautiful love story! I was hooked right from the get go! I struggled to put it down!
Matthias grew up in the shadows of Oscuro under the reign of his tyrant father. He spends most of his time writing sad songs and in the company of his canine companion, Bones. Until his father captures Adalia, a major in the Lucius army.
Sarah has created a book with great atmosphere and made my imagination soar! I would love to see someone create a map. The chemistry and tension between Mattias and Adalia is incredible he is such a gentleman and is considerate of her and her feelings throughout.
I would highly recommend this book for fans of Cozy Fantasy, Enemies to lovers, Forced Proximity and Found Family.
This was such a cute, cozy fantasy romance and I loved every minute of it. The theme of opposites: dark vs light, heaven vs hell (but make it fantasy vibes), good vs evil, and more make this an interesting-holds-your-attention book with fantastic character development, low stakes, and descriptive-but-not-overwhelming world building. The slow burn, forbidden love, swoon-worthy romance was well worth the read. Fantastic debut, standalone, HEA left me feeling all warm and fuzzy.
The Grey (earth/mortals) fixed between Lucius (light/good/heaven) and Oscuro (dark/bad/hell) was a familiar but intriguing world where emo prince of darkness Matthias and warrior general Adalia find love amidst realms on the brink of war. Slow burn and found family are some of my favorite tropes and this book has them! Definitely not a book you want to pass by.
It was a nice and cozy read, I think the world was very interesting and different from other fantasy stories as it was magical afterlife in a way and not just world with magic or faes etc. So I enjoyed this a lot and just wanted to know more and more about the world earlier as I am super curious but i dont think nothing left unanswered it just was more paced and sprinkled throughout the book.
One thing that could have been different for me was the sex scene, i think it could have fit the book better if it was a closed door or fade to black scene as it was in the end-end of the book only and I didn't need to have an descriptive scene there really. Even though it wasn't too spicy of a scene or too descriptive I think it could fit wider audiences without it at all (or fade to black as i said).
I feel bad that this one fell flat for me. The world building was great, and I’d never read about a world concept like this one before. Because of this, I was pretty intrigued for the first 25% of the book, or so. However, I just couldn’t get past the MFC and her hypocritical behavior/take on things. She really annoyed me. The MMC was actually pretty wonderful and I felt really bad for his situation in life.
The overall flow of the story was very slow, with a lot of detailed descriptions of really everything. It wasn’t what I’d consider dark or spicy. What little spice there was, was towards the end of the book. Can I honestly recommend this read to a friend? Probably not, which is too bad, because this plot and new interesting concept had potential to be really a fantastic read.
While this is a review in exchange for an ARC copy, it is candid feedback based on what I thought.
When I tell you this is a cozy read I mean it. I'm not usually a fan of many romance novels (I am extremely picky with how it is portrayed, so that should tell you something) but Sarah C. Davies did a phenomenal job writing an enemies-to-lovers story with captivating relationship development!
The story is fast-paced, has a strong FMC, and makes an excellent debut novel.
This is a New Adult novel. Also, look at that cover design!!! Be sure to check this out if you're looking to get into fae romance! I’ve wanted to get into more fae stories for a while so this was a delight!
When Shadows Seek Light is an AMAZING book!! Chapter 33.. is just so beautiful!! I definitely cried😭 The message this book brings gives me goosebumps. In the darkness and shadows, there will always end up being light. You have to find it🥹 I love this book with my whole soul. This is a story about Matthias and Adalia. Their individual journeys led them to each other. The chemistry is magical. You can always change your beliefs and see the positive in life. I would say more, but you’ll have to read it yourself so I don’t spoil it! I need the physical book, so I can have Matthias and Adalia every day💜🩵 To add, this book is so very is gorgeous!! If you judge books by their cover, you won’t be disappointed😍 Light guide you.. and keep you🥹
This book is a stand-alone cozy romantasy (aka easy to read/easy to follow, not super high stakes, and there's a lot of feel good themes throughout the book). In this world, there are two kingdoms - the kingdom of Lucius, the kingdom of light and the kingdom of Oscuro, the kingdom of darkness. There is also an area between the two called "The Grey" where the Shadowkin live. Basically, the Shadowkin live their lives in this middle ground and when they pass on, they have to choose which kingdom to spend their eternal lives in. The two main characters/love interests have really great chemistry on the page and I was absolutely living for all of their interactions! If you are a fan of cozy fantasy or romantasy, you will one hundred percent enjoy this read!
Oh my goodness!! I was a little iffy about this book when I first started reading, but I just kept on reading. I will say, I didnt understand the world they were in at first, but the more I read it the more I understood it. That was making it hard to fully immerse myself into the book, but when I did it was amazing!! There wasn't really any spicy scenes until the very last chapter. If you don't like that, you can skip it cause that is all that really happens in the end of the last chapter. I loved how the author was descriptive of certain scenes so that you can feel like you are in the world. I would totally recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a forbidden love type of book, sort of, don't hold my word for it, haha.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! that line made my heart MELT. I absolutely LOVED Adalia & Matthias journey to helping him find his worth.
This book was the perfect amount of romance, fantasy, cozy & sadness!! 💜💙
⚠️ Now.. don't go into this book without snack & a beverage on hand because the way Sarah describes food in her story is insane..all the meals sounded to die for and will most definitely make you hungry!!! I just know this author is a major foodie (like myself hehe) ⚠️
This book had my attention the minute I saw the tropes; emo boi, forbidden, forced proximity, enemies to lovers - need I say anything more?!? For a debut novel this fantasy world is established, detailed and well-planned. It did take me a few reading sessions to get entirely hooked, but that's purely because the world building is quite intense! This is a standalone (as far as I am aware) and not a part of a series, so the detailed introduction to each kindom and all of the characters is really helpful. When Shadows Seek Light is a cosy, very wholesome and low-spice (until a certain part, hehe) book, and it left me WISHING I could move to this world. 4/5!!
I really enjoyed this book. It is exactly as described, a cosy Romance. It is a light and easy read, I didn't feel there was a huge amount of conflict in the story and maybe the world could have used a bit more building. I was in the mood for a sweet romance without all of the snark and sass that has flooded romances and fantasy romances in recent years and Sarah really delivered on this one. I recommend this if you like your fantasy but are in the mood for a light and fluffy read to make you feel hopeful.
I’ve enjoyed this cozy story so much! Just like the tile, dark meets light in this story.
The characters are easy to fall in love with and the story progresses quickly enough to keep you entranced. I really enjoyed the progression and growth of our two main characters.
The story gives meadow fantasy vibes with some modern aspects. Based on the beautiful cover photo, it was easy to picture what I was reading.
Cute little cozy fantasy read! With elements of enemies to lovers, found family, and enough world building to help you transport to the little world. Really easy read, absolutely perfect for a rainy day!
Keep in mind, it’s a cozy fantasy, and it’s only one book not a series, so it is fast paced. But overall really good!
I wanna like this so badly but the writing of the FL is all over the place Its established that the ML is different than how FL imagined and holds values she supports so why is she always reverting back to the "He's a prince of everything I stand against, I should hate him" I'm loosing braincells
I will be honest and say I really wanted to read this based off the cover, but man I was not disappointed with this book. It is well paced, easy to read and the main characters are a delight. The world is interesting and built upon slowly. The romance is just chefs kiss. So glad I got to read this.
COZY ROMANTASY it's so cozy but the characters still need to improve. please don't make me confuse. if you wanna be flirting man, then be it until the end. don't change to another personality in every chapters.
