What could be worse than having a one-night stand with my twin’s biggest rival on the ice?
Umm…nothing.
Nothing is worse than that.
It’s the reason why my brother can never find out that I hooked up with Maverick McKinnon, ridiculously hot defenseman for the Western Wildcats. It doesn’t matter if the memories from our night together are enough to make my toes curl and my panties—
Well, you get the idea.
He’s the first guy to come along and not treat me like I’ll shatter into a million pieces when he lays his hands on me. Even if there’s a teeny tiny part within that would like to see him again, the fallout would be brutal.
I have enough to deal with. Like trying to break out of the box my family has placed me in since my diagnosis.
The only problem?
I’ve lost something valuable.
Something I need back.
And I’m pretty sure whose bed I’ll find it in.

This series is so fun. And this one especially.

If there's one person Maverick hates above all others, it's River Thompson. There's been bad blood between them for years. River stole his girlfriend and has been a long time hockey rival. First playing against each other in high school and now in college. When they play against each other again, Maverick notices a girl in the stands. One who's wearing Rivers number.

A chance meeting at a bar leads Maverick to Willow. He believes she's Rivers girlfriend. She doesn't tell him who she is. Willow knows exactly who Maverick is and is instantly attracted. What makes him more attractive is the fact he has no idea who she really is and that years ago she had cancer. He's not treating her like a fragile girl, but just someone he's really attracted to who's dating his rival. A rival that's apparently treating her like crap.

There's mistaken identity, brother's rival. Maverick is really smitten with her but of course because SHE knows who he really is she keeps him at arms length. River is her twin and she cares deeply for him. Dating his rival would definitely set him off. He's really over protective.

I loved the confusion going on with this one! He didn't know her but it was a real attraction. I hope there's more to this team! I'd also like to see a book on River and a book on Willows best friend.

I had the opportunity to get an advanced copy of this book. I think I’ve ready most of the books by this author, but this is the spiciest of them yet! I kinda love the secrets, knowing that they are going to be found out and wondering how they are going to be handled. I don’t want to spoil anything, but Maverick is NOT who you think he is from the other books in the series! As always, enjoyed getting to know the characters and became “invested”. Had I not been completing a class, I would’ve been done in a day or 2! An easy, enjoyable read!

Jennifer Sucevic just keeps raising the bar and then shattering it to pieces! Every time I finish her latest book, I quite literally say to myself that there's no way she can surpass that book, there's just no way. And there's no way that she can oust my favorite books of hers or characters with a new favorite.... yet, here we are - AGAIN! Maverick and Willow just landed in my top 5 favorite Jennifer Sucevic characters and this book just landed in my top 3 favorite of Jennifer's books. No joke! And for those not in the know, that is HUGE!!

For full disclosure, I have read every single one of Jennifer's books - and many of them multiple times. I love her stories, characters and the worlds she's crafted. And so yes, I do have my very own special "Jennifer Sucevic grading scale" and that is what this book is being judged against. And let me tell you, that's a tough scale to climb, let alone oust other books from their deep seated positions in the top spots. Yet, as I mentioned above, here we are - yet again! With every book, she sets that bar impossibly high and then she comes in and just shatters it! I'm awestruck by her - yet I shouldn't be surprised at this point. Because she does it every time.

And then she blows in here with Maverick and Willow. We've seen glimpses of Maverick for a while now, especially in his sister Juliette and her boyfriend Ryder's book. So we think we know the man, but lemme tell you that we do not know him. What is it about the surly, slightly grumpy, alpha male who is all growly and possessive? Doesn't it just do it for you every time? It appears it does it for me every time, especially if Jennifer is the one writing the MMC. And Maverick... hang on, I need to spritz my face with ice water for a minute. The man is fire embodied. I was totally taken by surprise because I thought for sure I knew what to expect with him knowing the little bit about him and then from the description of this book. But I was sadly unprepared for the depths of Maverick McKinnon. Sure he's a big-time alpha male and a hot shot on the Wildcats hockey team, but he's much much more. And as the layers get folded back, you find yourself falling harder and harder... and so hard. Like faceplant on the cement sidewalk hard - that's how hard. And the fact that he might just be teetering on the pleasure-dom side... I mean, is it just me or is there a touch of that in addition to his he-fall-first and touch-her-and-di& vibes? I'm here for all of them, btw. .... ohhhh how I'm here for all of them.

Then we've got Willow who has her own unique story and I love her so much. She's such an incredible character who is smart, kind, beautiful, and a survivor. I admire her so much for her strength and humanity. We get to witness her reclaiming her strength and life, and finding her way to living again and attempting to teach those closest to her to live life to its fullest. She's a beautiful soul. And she's so well matched with Maverick who needs a little sunshine in his life. (See what I did there?)

This story is just fire and chapters 7-9 just about did me over. Hoooooly moooooly. Can I get some more of that? Throw all the chili pepper emojis here because they deserve to be here. 10 million chili peppers along with 10 billion stars for my *gasp* new favorite Jennifer Sucevic book. Yes, yes, I said it. I do believe this is my favorite Jennifer book.... and I'm in shock about it.

Don't misunderstand, I'm not upset about this, but at the same time I am for the fact that I so deeply love so many of her stories and characters that it physically pains me when I have to oust one of my favs to make room for a new fav. (Don't mind me while I quietly sob in a corner). But then I love the new favs so hard that that almost hurts too. And from the very first sentence of this book, I knew that I was going to love Willow and Maverick so fierce, so much so that I dreaded the end of this book. I don't want to leave this world of these two characters. I want more of them together with their 10 million chilis, with Maverick's possessive and demanding side mixed with Willows beauty and grace, along with all of their cast of characters. I just need so much more...

And now starts the waiting game all over again - yes, I am a demanding Jennifer Sucevic fan because she doesn't churn these books out fast enough. (I'm sorry but you don't, I want so many more books - but hone your craft and keep doing you because whatever you're doing, it's working! ... but just ... I want more stories! *whines*) I recognize she spends MONTHS writing each story so carefully, only for me to devour them in less than a day - and you bet your bottom dollar that I stayed up until the wee hours of the night to finish each delectable word in this book. 10 billion stars for Maverick and Willow with 10 million chilis. <3

Honestly, this book was pretty okay. I just didn’t enjoy it as much as i’ve enjoyed other books recently. I don’t think there was a tremendous amount of character development or really a great amount of plot to it either

Jennifer Sucevic knows how to write college sports romance. She's one of those authors that you know going in that you're going to be caught up in a story you won't want to put down. And all her books have characters that are kind of interconnected but not so much that you can't read the books as stand-alones.

I'll be honest, it's been a while since I read the last book in the series so going into this, I couldn't remember who these characters were. Then I started reading and bits and pieces came back to me, and I really loved seeing Maverick’s feelings on his sister and best friend being together.

But even more I loved growling, jealous, possessive Maverick. Reading this in dual point of view gave us awesome insight into what an absolute sweetheart Maverick was. It also gave us a chance to stress out over how Maverick was going to react when all the facts came to light.

Willow had so many secrets. But I could understand how she ended up getting stuck in them. And knowing that she didn't do it maliciously and was more concerned about how Maverick would feel I couldn't fault her for delaying in bringing it all out into the open.

The way it all came out and the way everyone reacted was awesome. It felt realistic and made me like all the characters even more. The epilogue was as sweet and hot as the rest of the book had been. And I'm really looking forward to getting Hayes book next and all the others I'm greatly anticipating coming soon after.

I was lucky enough to receive as an ARC 🥰

Willow’s life is complicated, to say the least. Navigating the world while under the protective shadow of her twin brother, she struggles to break free from the limitations imposed on her due to her past diagnosis. The last thing she needs is to complicate things further by getting involved with Maverick, her brother’s biggest rival on the ice. But what starts as a one-night stand quickly becomes something more, as Willow finds herself drawn to Maverick’s intensity and the way he treats her with strength rather than fragility.

Maverick is the perfect blend of heat and heart. He’s the first guy who doesn’t treat Willow like she’s made of glass, and their chemistry is off the charts. But the stakes are high, and Willow knows that if her brother ever found out about their night together, it would lead to chaos. The tension between keeping their secret and the undeniable pull they feel towards each other drives the narrative forward, making it impossible to put the book down.

Sucevic skillfully navigates the emotional terrain of forbidden love, capturing the complexity of Willow’s internal struggle. She’s torn between her desire for independence and her fear of causing a rift in her family. Maverick, on the other hand, is portrayed with a depth that makes him more than just a bad boy athlete—he’s someone who genuinely sees and values Willow for who she is.

Mine to Take is more than just a sports romance; it’s a story about self-discovery, breaking free from the roles others impose on us, and the risks we take for love. Sucevic’s writing is engaging, with well-developed characters and a plot that keeps the reader hooked from start to finish. For fans of romance with a side of tension, passion, and a dash of rebellion, this book is a must-read.

This was quite cute. The concept was a fun one and I liked Maverick’s clear interest in Willow from the beginning. The writing wasn’t my favourite but it flowed well and overall it was an easy read for me. The chemistry between Maverick and Willow was good, and the sex scenes were quite hot. There were a couple that were a bit odd to me, but whatever, as a whole that side of the book worked for me.

However, I found the character of Willow’s brother, River, to be completely insufferable – he was a really annoying character, as was much of her family, too. I found the way they came round to everything by the end very rushed and convenient. In general I thought the pacing in this book wasn’t great – it was very disjointed and I felt like Willow and Maverick’s switch to deeper feelings was quite hurried after a slow start. I wish more time had been spent showing the two characters getting to know one another, because those scenes were fun and enjoyable and it was cute to see.

There was also way too many other characters and references to to past books in the series. It got really confusing and it was overdone.

Overall, I did enjoy it, and I might try other books by this author in the future, but this was mostly just an okay read for me.

Content Notes: Brother’s rival / rival’s sister, hidden/mistaken identity, one night stand, hockey, boy obsessed, forbidden.

Ok. I always one-click this author without hesitation. For years! I used to devour each book and love the college worlds she’s built. But lately the books are falling flat. They don’t flow like the previous ones.

First, I feel the character development is weaker in this series. The books don’t have depth and are shorter. For example- there were so many missed opportunities to grow the characters and add details that could strengthen the connection between the characters. I’m missing getting to know WHY the main characters want each other. I miss the little things that add to the build up. The deets that make you root for them and refuse to let you put the book down. And- there were some inconsistencies with days which just irk me.

This book, as the previous one in this series, had SO MUCH POTENTIAL. But I felt it had rushed scenes and I do not really know why Maverick fell for Willow, besides they rocked it in bed. (Besides one paragraph about how she helped him with school work- which could have been woven more throughout their story.)

Ugh. Overall, disappointing. I used to read these books on release day, now, not so much. I hope the author gets her mojo back- gets a few more beta readers who can offer real suggestions on bettering the build up, character development, and adding the swoony and Ah-ha moments. I feel disappointed because this could have been SO MUCH BETTER!

I think I got bored a little, it was okay, I just feel like I’ve read this exact story before with different character names and a small change to the plot. I don’t mean the troupe, I mean this story was almost identical to another - I’m going to have to comb through my reads list to figure that out.

Plenty of smut - and a little bit of plot and 🤷‍♀️ it was fine. Just maybe I was too hung up about feeling like I’ve read this story before.

4.5/5 - This book is book 5 in the Western Wildcats series, but they do not need to be read in order. Maverick is a hockey player who has his eyes set on making the NHL. One night at a game, he sees a beautiful woman, the only problem is she is wearing his rival’s jersey. He is set on taking her away from him at all costs. Little does he know, that the beautiful woman is the sister of his rival, not his girlfriend. Willow knows exactly who Maverick is, but is drawn to him regardless. This relationship can only end in disaster, right?

I haven’t read other books in this series, but I enjoyed this book and will be going back through the series. Willow is a sweet girl struggling to reclaim who she is after beating cancer. Her family is overprotective now. She is torn between her brother, and his rival, Maverick. She loves that Maverick doesn’t know her history and treats her like she is breakable. Maverick is struggling, because all his friends seem to have found relationships and is feeling some loneliness.

I think that Maverick and Willow meet at the perfect time in their lives and seem to connect on so many levels. I struggled with Maverick and him still sleeping with Willow, thinking she was in a relationship. Cheating is a no-go for me in books, and this got a little close to this.

This was a great book and relationship that had some bumps along the way. I enjoyed getting to know Willow and Maverick and can’t wait to read more by Jennifer. If you like hockey romance featuring a brother’s rival, this is the perfect book for you! Thank you to the author for a copy of this book. All opinions are 100% mine.

This book is a twist on the “brother’s best friend” trope in that it’s a “brother’s sworn enemy” book and it was so good! Maverick is a hockey player that only has eyes for his hockey career until he sees Willow at one of his games. Unfortunately she is wearing his biggest rival’s jersey and therefore he sets his goal on taking her away from his rival. He has no idea that she is really his rival’s sister. Willow knows exactly who Maverick is and what role her brother played in making Maverick hate him and relationships. I loved how Maverick navigated not only facing his fears of caring about someone too much but also his changing relationship with his best friend who was now his sister’s boyfriend. I also loved seeing a little bit of Maverick’s father, Brody, who is from one of Jennifer’s previous books. Most of all, I loved that there was no third act breakup! It’s why I love Jennifer’s books so much and they become my comfort reads…. Low angst, high spice and very few third act break ups. This one will be added to my list of comfort rereads!

I did finish the book, but I feel like this one lacked character development - like, Maverick didn’t ask Willow’s last name, and after fairly superficial encounters, he was in love with her??? I love hockey romances that you get to read the whole team’s story, which is fun to for a sub-plot, but I couldn’t get on board with this one.

I loved this story so much. Brilliant standalone! Didnt want to put the book down and almost blitzed it in one day. I love thr chemistry between Maverick and Willow, and I'm probably going to blitz the rest of the series. Makes complete sense to read the fifth book randomly then start from the beginning, right? 😂

I enjoyed it, it was a cute sort of forbidden romance. It felt like it all happened within a span of a week though and the entire time I just wanted for the brother to find out. It was a nice short read but some things just felt repetitive to me and dragged out that I felt myself skimming through some parts but I enjoyed it.

Love these Western Wildcats! I will never tire of hockey romances and Jennifer Sucevic nailed it. In Mine to take we meet Maverick,Mr. Anti-relationship, who shocks himself by falling for Willow. He finds himself opening up to her more than anyone in his life before. Willow is still trying to figure out how to live her life post illness to the fullest. She's struggling with her over bearing, embarassing, and protective family, while falling for the sweet and spicy Maverick. However she hides a huge secret about his biggest hockey rival/ enemy from him. Can they get past it? This book is sweet, spicy, & fun!.

*** SPOILERS AHEAD ***

Not my favorite of the series because Mav was insta-OBSESSED from two seconds of laying his eyes on her. It was just too unbelievable and it's all his inner thoughts talked about. I was a bit sick of it by chapter 10.

Once Willow finally acknowledged him, the friendship seemed to progress nicely even though all Maverick said was crude stuff. There were only two moments where he said something that wasn't lust filled and one of those was his dyslexia while the other was about Ryder's friendship.
I'm glad he voiced his concerns to Ryder, I know the notion that men don't get into their feelings is a common misconception.

The moment Willow got comfortable with Mav, I know the bubble was going to pop. I will say, the backlash wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. She had way too many lies all over the place.

Overall, it was just meh. I think my fav. character was Holland.

3 star as part of the series, closer to 4 if it were a stand alone

By book 3 of the series the plots/writing all started getting waaaaayyyyy too redundant and it was painful by the 5th book. I’m a completionist so I kept going, but part of me wishes I didn’t… I think I would have enjoyed it if it were a true stand alone.

RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
SPICE: 🔥🔥🔥

Okay I have a new favorite Western Wildcat and his name is Maverick McKinnon!

MINE TO TAKE is out in the world, and let me tell you, I absolutely ate this book up. The second you give me a brother’s rival and a he falls first situation… I am there for it.

Ans this one, it’s so so good!

TROPES ⬇️

✨ Hockey Romance
✨ Brother’s Rival
✨ Hidden Identity
✨ He Falls First
✨ Chronic Illness Rep
✨ Athlete/ Tutor

Maverick and Willow are absolutely electric from the second they meet and sparks fly between them. He doesn’t know who she is, but all he knows is that she is on the arm of his rival and he wants her for himself. Willow is tired of playing it safe and being coddled after an illness so the second Maverick doesn’t treat her like she’s fragile, she can’t resist him.

I loved this. The fact that Maverick just wanted Willow under and circumstances but didn’t know what her relationship to his rival was, made this such a fun read. And I loved Willow so much and understood why she was so scared to tell Maverick the truth. But that moment when it all came out… I love for those moments.

Maverick didn’t disappoint. This boy fell hard and fast and absolutely was not going to be swayed by anything. Ans of course we get to see all our favorites again, which is always something I love!

Ans this boy has a dirty mouth. I wasn’t expecting that of him and boy did he exceed expectations 🥵🥵

This one can easily be read as a standalone and between the swoon and the spice, I could not put this one down!

This was another enjoyable read but there were a few things I wasn't so keen on. Mav thinking she was dating someone else and still sleeping with her and trying to get her to 'pick him'. We know it wasn't like that and their connection was real but the fact he'd go there, even when it's the guy he hates? Not that cool.

I also wanted some more explanation about what was going on with Mav's Dad & River. It was brought up a couple of times but there was no resolution or proper clearing of the air between Mav & River. Although they obviously worked it out.

I'm definitely excited for Hayes' story next... He was fun in this. Still keeping hope alive we'll find out WTF is going on with Bridger! But I'm suspecting Holland might have some insights to share.

📌“I think you might be it for me, sunshine. I think you might just be my everything.”

I started this last night, and I was done by the morning. I’m not sure if I read it or inhaled it. All I know is this was everywhere, consuming my thoughts and setting my soul on 🔥.

I think by now you all know how much I loooooove this series. And when I think I can’t love it more, Jennifer writes Mine to Take. Goodness, this was divine. From Maverick to Willow, but also Hayes and Holland (which I want books on… but separate, please and thank you 😜).

And surprisingly enough… River won me over too. Not crazy for how the Sabrina thing went down but I won’t say no to a second chance either 👀

But I digress. What matters here is that this was a fast paced, hockey romance with a boy obsessed with a sunshine girl whose name he doesn’t even know 😜

Yes, I’m glad you ask. It is 🥵🥵🥵, indeed 😎

Maverick & Willow: Book 5 of Western Wildcats: Brother’s rival/ one night leads to so much more: (More stars would be given if I could) Finally we get Maverick’s story. I knew it would be good, but I was not expecting it to be the epic love story I have been craving. Jennifer Sucevic has made me a forever fan with this series. I love me a hockey romance, especially when there's a guy like Maverick 😋

this story was so emotional and so intriguing from the very first chapters!! there are some things that kinda gave me an ick or that pissed me off.

the way there wasn't so much relationship development was kinda annoying and I wish we could read more about the tutoring sessions or the ways they spent time together in order to become some sort of unofficial couple.

also that scene with Willow in the closet? absolutely not. look, I love this girl so so much but that? I have my limits. that was straight off weird. imagine if they switched places. not so fun anymore huh? (at least that's how I would feel like if I were in that position)

other than those I loooved the tropes!!! I always fw rival's sister and with the one when one of them has an illness. those combined? ARGHHHH you cannot get me away from my kindle

Mine to Take is the kind of romance that makes you smile the whole way through. If you love a protective, devoted MMC who falls first—and falls hard—this one delivers. From the moment he sets his sights on her, there’s no going back, and honestly, it’s adorable. Their dynamic is full of tension, sweetness, and just the right amount of angst to keep things interesting.

The pacing is great, making it an easy book to fly through. The romance is front and centre, and while there’s some drama, it never feels over the top or frustrating. The connection between the characters feels natural, with plenty of flirty banter and heartfelt moments. Spice-wise, it sits at a comfortable 3/5—not too much, not too little, just enough to add some extra tension.

Overall, this was such a cute and engaging read that I didn’t want to put it down. If you’re in the mood for a swoon-worthy romance with a hero who only has eyes for her, this one is definitely worth picking up!

This is the 5th book in The Western Wildcats Hockey Series and although it’s a standalone story, readers will get more enjoyment if they read the other books in the series prior, for more of a deeper dive into the characters.
This book is focused on the sunshine and graceful heroine, Willow Thompson and the possessive, dirty talking sexy alpha hero, Maverick McKinnon.

An instant connection between the two characters has them drawn to each other and a mistaken identity/lack of communication or shall I say, a deliberate avoidance to setting the record straight as to her identity and her relationship with River Thompson, her twin brother and Maverick’s arch nemesis for years.

There are some wonderful heartfelt moments in the story with Willow and her family and Maverick ♥️

Willow has already fought the toughest battle of her life and come out a survivor, will she be able to convince her family to let her actually live her life and find love 💕

I definitely recommend to anyone who loves a spicy romance story to read this story now, you won’t regret it♥️
Thank you for the arc from BookSprout 💜

Maverick + Willow oh cutesy, spicy couple. A one-night stand that didn’t stand a chance lol.

Mav thought Willow is his arch nemesis’ girlfriend, when in fact she’s her twin sister, the story started off silly like that and continued to be funny and heartwarming at the same time.
