How was I meant to know I was dancing with a vampire’s familiar?

My name is Ava Monroe, failing student at Kinwich University, and what started as a scheme to make my ex jealous has turned into a nightmare.

I have a join a coven of vampires, werewolves, witches and shapeshifters, or suffer a long, bloody death at the hands of the coven’s tyrannical leader. He will stop at nothing to keep his coven a secret from humans. Unless I pass a trial to prove I’m worthy of membership, who knows what warped execution method he’ll use?

To top it off, I’m distracted with impure thoughts about another coven a tall, brooding vampire with long legs and a backside that makes me tingle in the most inconvenient places. Will I pass my trial? Or will I lose my humanity trying to survive?

***

The Vampire and the Scorpion is written in British English, and contains on-the-page graphic, bloody violence, injury detail, explicit sex scenes, needles/ phlebotomy, kidnap, and substance abuse. It also contains suggestions or references to child abuse, sexual exploitation, rape, and domestic violence. As the first book in the series, future instalments may deal with other triggering themes. Reader discretion advised.

Although this can be enjoyed as a stand-alone, straight, romance novel, it's the first in an on-going series that explores polyamorous LGBT+ (MMF) relationships, full of misdirection, heartbreak, and drama along the way.

My Review

A solid debut novel and a different take on the supernatural world because of the set-up here this felt fresh and though I had some small issues as a whole this was an enjoyable read with plenty of future potential and expansion within the world. It's sole POV and our heroine is Ava, she's a student who after some less-than-sensible choices finds herself mixed up in a world she had no idea even existed. Here she becomes the familiar of vampire Madigan, a supernatural with an old-world vibe.

I enjoyed this and thought it was intriguing. It was well written and a quick read and though I wasn't quite convinced of the chemistry between Ava and Madigan I did like them both as individuals.

I do wish the romance had been focused on more rather than the dangerous scenarios that we did, this was the area I had some issues connecting with. Madigan could also have used some deeper insights as I don't think he stands out as much as Ava did but this may have been because this was sole POV. I just didn't feel that I got to know him as well as I would have liked, he remains for the most part quite elusive and mysterious as a love interest. Especially when placed alongside Ava who i felt we got to know much better. The carnival setting could have also been expanded on as it wasn't a vibe and I think this would have greatly enriched this story.

This does have closure on Madigan and Ava and this is the first book in what I'd expect to be a series focusing on different characters within this world. Taken as a whole though this was still an interesting introduction and was an intriguing start. It was well written and I did enjoy myself I also loved that it was set in the UK as it made it feel relatable to me. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of The Vampire and the Scorpion.

My Opinion
This most definitely was a very solid debut novel and I enjoyed it greatly! The set-up of the world was surprising and definitely not what I expected it to be. Honestly, I am not even sure what I exactly expected, but this was not it! Even though it was different from what I imagined, I really liked reading it. It was a quick read and I went through the book in just a few evenings. A perfect night time read, if you ask me! I loved reading it just before bed time, a few chapters at the time.

The characters were well-developed with plenty of space to expand more. The same goes for the world, it feels like there is so much potentional all around. I am very excited to see where Baele is going to take us!

My favourite character definitely was Ava, who is simply a complete menace! I just love characters who have a little spice. It adds so much to a book, if you ask me. I also related so much to her… She was so quick to do, without any thinking. I found myself thinking ‘pleaseeeee just take a step back and look at the situation’ more than once. Besides Ava I also really liked Billy. Such a cutie!

The only thing that I enjoyed a little less, was the amount of romance. I went into the book expected quite a bit of romance, and it was more concentrated on the events in the world. I am a dark romance girly at heart, and I can’t help myself but love to be swept away in tornado romances. I hope the next book is going to concentrate on that a little more.

Overall, a very solid debute novel that I really enjoyed! It wasn’t what I expected, but if you go in with an open mind I am sure you’ll enjoy it.

I was astounded how awful this book is, especially considering the rating it has on Goodreads – 4.1. The only reason I didn’t DNF it was that it is only 275 pages and I read it in a couple of hours. Time I will never get back.

Ava is a failing student who in seeking to make her ex jealous makes a decision that changes her life irrevocably. She finds herself having to prove herself to her new supernatural coven, a coven which includes vampires, werewolves, shape-shifters, witches, demons and vampires. And all led by the terrifying giant of a vampire – Ivan. The only friends Ava has are Billy – a shape-shifter, Latisha – a witch and Madigan – a vampire who Ava finds herself attached to as his familiar.
The romance between Ava and Madigan is so forced as to be practically non-existent. There is absolutely no chemistry at all between these two, a couple of growls and a couple of smiles and that’s all we get apart from the sex. The couple of sex scenes were to put it bluntly, boring and a complete snoozefest. Twilight has more romance and chemistry than this did.

The only thing that redeems this book into getting one star is that it actually depicts vampires as the monsters that they are, brutal and graphically violent – especially the event at the end. The plot armour that Ava has is beyond ludicrous, she is after all just human, the beatings and knocks to the head she constantly takes, not to mention having a fist punched through her guts – literally. And she is just fine from all this. And all this takes place under two weeks. The ending was incredibly predictable – the spoiler is literally in the title. Which renders all of Ava’s inner angst at having to take blood as a vampire for eternity completely moot, because we all know that’s not her fate, because it says it in the bloody title of the book.

Absolutely fantastic!

To say this is a supernatural novel, it is super realistic. The settings and description seem so real too!

Ava is a little menace, I love her 😂. She's like a little whirlwind and her link to a Scorpion is just appt.

Madigan is just your typical grump. But the love he has for Ava is evident.

The flow of the story is really well presented and doesn't feel rushed in the slightest.

Also, Billy 🥺 💔

I can't wait for the next installment!

I loved this book!!
I don’t typically read fantasy/paranormal romances but this kept drawing me in!

The gripping story and the characters were captivating!

Ava is made to make a decision of forgetting about her life to become a familiar or die… becoming a familiar to the brooding Mardigan wasn’t easy for her but she tries her best!!

This story isn’t just about the romance but soo much more! Truly was an amazing read!!

This book does contain some triggers and should be considered before reading but it’s definitely worth reading!!!

I loved the book the characters are really well written and the author is extremely talented at describing the characters and painting a picture that makes it easy to picture scenes in your imagination. The book has everything from vampire's to violence and some spice. I was never really into spice until I read this book and now I can't get enough. The book was so good I didn't want to put it down. I felt like I really got to know the characters.it's an amazing read I highly recommend it

ARC reader: 3.5 stars!

I went into this not actually knowing what to expect. I enjoyed the different take of the supernatural world and with the fantasy themes. The romance was cute, it would be good to see what now happens to Ava and Madigan from here on.

It was a nice, easy read and I imagine people will LOVE it when it gets to spooky season!

I was very quickly drawn into the fang-tastic story line. The chapters are perfectly “bite” sized. The story keeps you in the shadows and delves into the darker side of familiars, power and love staked right the way through the book. This book takes a different approach to the typical supernatural and transforms it into a spellbinding tale of love and bonds

*I recieved an ARC from the Author and this is my honest review of The Vampire & the Scorpion x

Had heard quite a bit about this book mostly via TikTok and thought that's something I would enjoy and....

Yes I did enjoy it x I do have to say I felt the story fell flat a bits and I got confused with some of the story but perseverance allowed me to finish the book x

Ava is someone I could relate to in the sense of she gets into situations that if she just took a step back & thought things through then she wouldn't have gotten into some of those situations x
Madigan seems like a cool vampire with more to come from his character x
I felt the same about a few of the more spoken about characters I can't wait to read their backgrounds and find out things that were only highlighted in this book x

Overall I really enjoyed reading this story and can't wait to find out more of this world from the Author's future releases x Would 100% recommend to all fantasy readers as well as beginners, etc xxxx

Really enjoyed this read! Almost gave me Cirque du Freak vibes, but better. The MFC was fun and relatable, though I didn’t vibe with the MMC much. I really hope we get to see more of his personality in the next book! Lots of fun paranormal aspects with different species. The plot was exciting, but you can tell the romance subplot was put on the back burner, which is fine. I just prefer more romance in my novels. Hopefully there will be more the next time.

It took me some time to get into the book, but after a while I really did enjoy it!
I liked different take on vampires and the supernaturals, the whole world building and the realism was amazing.
The characters overall were great too even tho I found Ava annoying sometimes.

ARC Review:

We are following the young student Ava who goes home with a stranger in order to get back at her ex. This single act unlocks a whole lot of problems for her.

She ends up in a bit of a predicament, because the evil!leader of a coven forces her to undergo a trial, so she can proof she's worthy to officially join the coven. While she's trying to keep her head above water, she connects to Madigan, the brooding Vampire whose familiar she becomes.

I liked the author's take on the supernatural world. Most of the time different supernaturals are trying to unalive each other, so it's nice to have them all together in a coven.

I would have liked to learn more about Madigan and the dynamic between the different supernaturals. We'll probably learn more about those in the upcoming books. I'm especially intrigued by the demons wirh fancy names.

Ava as a character was sometimes over the top for me. Latisha and Billy were my favorite. And I won't start on Ivan. What's with the use of full names all the time? 😭

The pacing was at times a bit slow for my taste, especially at the beginning, but it got better in the second half and I'm sure a lot of people do enjoy pacing like this.

The writing was pretty solid, I enjoyed my time reading it. Overall it was a good read, not perfect, but very nice and easy.

I think this is a solid debut novel, nice and easy to read with an intriguing plot. I really liked the writing style and enjoyed the different perspective on the supernatural with the mixture between vampires, shifters, werewolves and familiars. I only wished we had more development regarding the carnival setting and how they all fit into it.

The romance between Ava and Madigan felt a bit insta-love to me, in the sense that we don’t have a lot of tension and interaction between them or a well built-up relationship. The character development for Madigan was also a bit flat for me and I wished we knew more about his background and the reasons why he was considered different. Maybe this is something we will get to know better on the next books.

Loved the side characters, especially Billy (💔) and Latisha and I hope we get to know a bit more about her and the other witches in the next books. Got to say, Ava got on my nerves at some point with her crazy behavior but she redeemed herself in my eyes at the end.

I give this book 3.5 stars and I am looking forward to continue reading this series to see what happens next.

ARC Review:

I loved everything about this book and i’m already so excited for the rest of the series! I could not put this down, the plot was great, characters stood out but a couple of my favourite things was the unusual setup of the coven and little changed that made the supernatural’s unique.

Pacing was just right for me, not too fast and not too slow. I usually like my books with A LOT more spice but I enjoyed the story so much that I honestly wasn’t fussed about it. When spice did happen later on it was worth the wait as it wasn’t just there to fill a space it was character development 💜

I would highly recommend this book and will be buying on release for my bookshelf and friends to borrow.

Having become aware of the book through quotes, I was able to read it as an ARC reader.

It's about college student Ava, whose life is turned upside down from one moment to the next. Instead of continuing to be annoyed that her ex seems to be over her, she suddenly finds herself part of a coven full of shapeshifters, vampires, witches, and werewolves. And it's either survive or die.

I thought the book would contain more romance than I actually got. But don't get me wrong, that wasn't a problem at all, as the world portrayed here captivated me. A lot of things were left vague (I think intentionally). You understand what the book is about, but I'm very sure the second part will go into more depth.

Let's get to the romance. In addition to the tasks Ava is given in her new environment, she is now under the command of a vampire. She finds him more interesting than she should, even though he's often not even there. That's pretty much the only thing that was a bit annoying while reading, and explains the 4 stars. The romance wasn't as developed as it could have been. The bonding moments, which I personally felt were needed at the beginning, only came towards the end. However, I must say that even the two characters know they don't know each other very well and say they want to get to know each other.

This book is an introduction to the world, and I hope to read more of it to gain a better understanding. Getting to know this world (and the vampire) with Ava will hopefully be just as much fun as reading the first book.

I discovered this book through TikTok and decided to give it a try…

So, for a debut novel I think it’s well written, it flowed and I definitely think the writing is better than some other popular books out there. I think it has the skeletons of a good story but for 80% of the book I was sitting at three stars. However, I do think this is down to personal preference.

Firstly, I didn’t like the FMC. A lot of characters in the book aren’t really built on and some blended into others, but the FMC, Ava, was really childish. I understand she is student but I would have said starting college, fresh out of her GCSE’s rather than university. We get told a few things about her which are left off or aren’t really explored. She’s very crude, almost silly and desperate for anyone. Yes, she came from a disruptive home life but this wasn’t really explored enough for me to justify her, getting drunk and threatening to Jill herself if her boyfriend didn’t see her.
This made it really hard to enjoy the romance between her and the MMC because I just kept thinking she was really young and yet this 150 year old vampire find her alluring?

There wasn’t really much going on with the MMC and Ava for me to buy into the romance. He had a wife, whose picture he kept, but we didn’t ever really hear about her, it never came into play. It just felt like details were put in to give depth to a character but then not built on.

I was sad that we didn’t get more of a Carnival/funfair theme given they ran one. I was hoping for a vampire/familiar run in at the haunted house. Honestly, if it wasn’t for the funfair being an albi to appear human, the setting could have just been a typically British traveller camp.

However, I did give this four stars, because for once I was happy to finish the plot and let the romance burn on the back. I did like the supernatural and I do think this is well written. I’ll happily read the same author when the FMC is just a tad older!

The story starts really slow, letting the reader get to know the characters, what is happening and why it's happening at all. But as the story goes, it pulls you into it because of:
1) the wit and banter, which is playful and teasing, making the story more lighter, easier, letting you laugh together with the characters;
2) the plot is unique and interesting, I haven't read anything like that since now, so I found the system of the coven and synergy of all the characters intriguing, wanting to know what and how it works even more;
3) characters themselves - even though I hated some, but others were like a balm to my heart: sweet, beautiful in and out, caring, trustful and loyal. Even though they were forced to live through horrendous lifestyle and enslavement, they still found each other and made one big family, that you could always come and ask for help, support, to have a sweet laugh or a heart to heart talk. I loved these moments the most.
4) was left impressed with the fmc - not gonna lie, at first she annoyed me at first, but slowly I started to like her, the way how she wouldn't take bulls-it, how she would stand up for herself, and especially how she would sacrifice herself or make decisions that would alter her entire world, just so she could take care of the people that she loves.
All in all, I enjoyed myself while reading this book, and was left wondering what's going to happen next, especially knowing what mmc had to sacrifice and leave, so that he could live like he lived...

I came across K.A.Beale on TikTok or “BookTok” and jumped on her post about being an arc. It did not disappoint, it had me hooked. Loved it 🖤

Oh my, this book has left me feeling like I need the next book now. I need to know what happens next. I would have read this in one day had I not been working! Honestly, I didn’t want to put it down. It’s a different take on the supernatural’s, which was a nice change. Usually they all want to unalived each other!

The MFC is student Ava, who stupidly goes home with a strange man! Girl, you should have known better! From here, things started to go wrong on so many levels.

The story has a mixture of supernatural’s and of course the odd human. With witches, shifters, vampire’s & werewolves, what’s not to love. One vampire in particular, I would have unalived! Trust me, when you read this, you will know who I’m talking about.

Loved that there was a Scottish character too, being a fellow Scot and all! Aye, loved him. My favourite character has to be Latisha, she is fierce and powerful.

The plot, I struggled to fathom where it was going. Usually, I can work out what’s going to happen but no, not with this story. Very well written K.E.Beale 🖤 When will book 2 be out? This will be released on the 1st October and is available for pre-order.

The Vampire and the Scorpion is one of those books that gets its claws in your attention before you even notice.
The FMC, Ava, is a naive 22-year-old failing university, just trying to make her ex jealous - her determination not to continue failing leaves her in a life-or-death ultimatum. The MMC, Madigan, is a grumpy, marshmallow in the middle, one-hundred-and-twenty-something-year-old vampire who wants to maintain a semblance of professionalism within his role in the coven but also hide his desires for the FMC- both of which slowly crumble as soon as he is faced with Ava. Their budding romance is a minor part of the story but is exciting to read about and I can’t wait to read book 2 to see how their courtship develops.
The author writes in a way that makes it so easy to imagine the world Ava lives in I could almost smell the dampness of her student accommodation and the campfires in the showmen’s yard. It is an easy-to-follow and fun read which leaves you with a warm and fuzzy feeling despite the moments of gore, I finished this in one sitting. This is the first book in the Blood and Venom series but could be read as a standalone story- no cliffhanger at the end but the story does leave you wondering what the future holds for the coven.

Looking forward to book 2!

Ava awoke after a hot, scorching night with Austin and unintentionally fell into a dark, twisted world of non-human beings. Her life took a drastic change where the veil of the world of the supernatural was lifted for her new place in an unfamiliar reality. A reality she hadn't wanted at all, but in order to survive, she agreed eventually to stay after being coerced by Madigan, biding her time until she could escape.

An entire coven under the disguise of an entertainment business, a Funfair, was now staring her in the face. How was she going to navigate it unless she would immerse herself in learning all about it? She had to embrace it, even if it was on the pretense of accepting it.

The problem was that humans couldn't survive for that long... Could she find her place and keep alive, or would she lose her life prematurely like the others before her? As I read further the deeper I found myself in the clandestine world of the unseen.

Madigan, with those grey eyes of his, was intriguing as soon as he walked into the scene. His and Ava's relationship development is such a treat! Ughh, Madigan had my heart.

This book was a surprisingly fabulous debut from the author, more than I'd expected initially, and I enjoyed it immensely. It was a little of a slow-burn for me, which was rather refreshing from all the Insta-loves I've read, and I loved it. I didn't think I'd be into books about vampires and witches, but I'm glad I gave this one a chance! It was such a brilliant experience - new and out of my comfort zone in a way. It had humour and a rollercoaster of emotions, spice and action, gore, and squeamish moments. Overall, it is a perfect concoction of intrigue.

The cliffhanger gave me a slap on the face, albeit in a good way. It left me wanting more. I'm one of those readers who loves a good cliffhanger, so, yay. NOW I need to know what happens in the one already!

ARC Review.

I really liked the whole "fun fair"/band of misfits ambiance. It was dark, though, but more from a gory point of view than anything else.

This first installment of the story is quite short, but it feels like 65% of the book is a very long introduction to Ava and her new world. However, we only learn about her immediate new world (the fun fair's people) but not much about the supernatural world as a whole. I'm excited to learn more about them in the 2nd book (hopefully from another POV)

I was expecting a romance, but I couldn't get behind the relationship between Madigan and Ava. If the shyness and old-fashioness (is that a word ? 😂) of the MMC was cute at first, it also made it hard to take him seriously.
I didn't like Ava, though. She seems to lack commonsense and intelligence. Her comebacks are too strong at times but not strong enough at other times. She gives a bit of a psycho vibe, but not in a good way.
Their relationship is a slow burn, so don't expect anything to happen between them before 80%.

As far as the plot is concerned, I wasn't that convinced before the ending, since the pace was quite slow, but when it finally started, I couldn't put it down.

A paranormal novel that includes romance and a bit of spice.
I found it was a bit of a slow burn to start with, one that makes you feel hooked while reading.

This book is about a woman called Ava who dances with a guy to make her ex jealous , little did she know that she would be subjected to 'blood harvesting' within the paranormal world.

Ava becomes a familiar to a Vampire called Madigan, Ava finds out that it isn't just vampires who exist, it's witches, shapeshifters also in their circus coven.

Ivan who is the coven leader, isn't a nice leader, he makes Ava’s time there difficult, dark twists and turns in this novel.

A familiar and her vampire start to get close, there is a romantic attraction, one which doesn't happen to start with, once her night of romance with her vampire,
Ava has to make a choice, one which would sacrifice others, it's just getting the witches and shifters on side.

One night was all it took to divide the coven, people died, but within that in loss it built a safer coven. Ava made the choice to become a shifter, one who would sacrifice herself to help her Vampire.

This book ends on a cliff hanger, which I hope book #2 is coming soon..

I was given an ARC copy to read, as long as I gave a review. I've given it a few days to think about it and make an honest review of this book.

The premise is fantastic, a new way to look at the genre with a setting I've not seen before. The characters had little to some development. Especially with the witches, I wanted more from them overall.

Now the romance. What romance? He looked at her once and took her to a forest and she's in love? There was no build up, little conversation, very little interaction between the "'love interests'.

The big bad guy was hard played upon, why are they all so scared of him (other than he holds their blood). His henchman was a wet wipe.

However! I have high hopes the series can progress from here and only go up! The writing style was great, I was drawn into the next chapter, but overall I just wanted more and got less.

Fingers crossed the next installment will be more in depth and have character development and back stories. Just sad they made a character that was easy to like (so therefore will die) and did just that.

I couldn't put this book down. The beginning took me back to my university days in 2014, which was incredibly nostalgic. I fell in love with the main character, who is so relatable in her thoughts and experiences. From being kicked out by her mother at 12, losing her beloved grandmother, and dealing with an uncaring ex-boyfriend, her journey is heart-wrenching yet compelling.

When she went to the campsite for a one-night stand, the description of the guy made me think, 'Girl, this sounds sketchy!' And sure enough, things started to go horribly wrong.

I adored the blend of supernatural elements in the story, with vampires, shifters, werewolves, and Familiars. The witch Latisha was a standout character, and I even thought she and Ava could have had a love story. Billy captured my heart immediately with his golden retriever vibes.

The story's unpredictability kept me hooked; I never knew what would happen next, which is rare for me. Usually, I have some idea of the plot's direction, but this book kept me on my toes.

I'm so glad I stumbled upon this gem on TikTok!

"The Vampire and the Scorpion" is a tale of Ava, who makes a wrong move on a drunken night out in an attempt to make her ex jealous. Little does she know, this one decision turns into an unforgettable night for all the wrong reasons.

The book starts off slow, with the first ten chapters feeling a bit sluggish. However, once the story picks up, it becomes an easy and enjoyable read. I particularly liked the character building in the book, as I could easily picture the various supernatural beings living among humans.

The setting of supernaturals coexisting with humans added an interesting element to the story, making it easy to visualize the places and characters within the book. The plot follows a typical girl-gets-the-guy storyline, but it still manages to keep the reader engaged.

Overall, "The Vampire and the Scorpion" may not be a book that sticks with me for a long time, but it serves as a nice palate cleanser and an easy read. If you enjoy supernatural romances with a slow burn, then this book is definitely worth checking out.

I recieved an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

DNF at 12%, therefore I had really hard time how to review this.

I hate to write any kind of reviews for the books I have dnf'd. I don't hate this one, don't get me wrong, but I am disappointed. I was so sure I will love this one, it had basically everything I was looking for a book.
Turns out, this was not for me. The writing style was not for me.
Is it bad? No, absolutely not.
Do I hate it? Fuck no.
But there was something I can't point my finger on that made it impossible for me to read. Maybe I wasn't in the right headspace, we will see later.

I am so sorry for that, I wish I'd love it like I thought, maybe I will give it another chance later when I hopefully get over my problems with the style.

There is absolutely no hate towards anyone or anything, please give this book a chance, it is not bad <3 I know I will give it a second chance later!

I am so sorry for this and hope all the best for this book and author, may them succeed in their career <3

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure what to expect going in, all I knew was vampires. But it was so much more. Vampires, witches, shifters and werewolves. All running a fun fair sort of thing. Although none of the fun fair things happens in this book. I hated Ivan with every fibre of my being and the torture scene with the board and the weights, I swear that made me wince.

I would have loved to know more about Madigan and would have loved to know more about his background. I think there's a prequel that Im going to have a look into. Adored Billy and Latisha. Ava was at times annoying but ok.

There were a few spelling mistakes that made me pause to reread the sentence but not alot. Im sure it happens. Also I felt like the reasoning for Ava and Greg's break up was thrown in just to make you feel bad for Greg. Like he was an ass to her and you were supposed to hate him then suddenly, ok well Ava was a bit much and he sorta had a reason for breaking up with her then he gets murdered.
