In today's performance oriented society A Field Book of Performance Management comes really handy for the practicing HR professionals as well as the line managers who normally would have little time at his disposal for research into the most critically debated area i.e. Performance Management in organizations. Going thru' the Field Book - I see the title to be very appropriate since throughout the chapters the emphasis remain on a problem solving approach while remaining firmly anchored to the core principles. While offering a solution the authors have also set some boundaries thru' the 'Do's & 'Don'ts's for the professionals to realize the full benefit of the given solution. A few factors that I feel which really contributes to make this book an extremely readable an useful one are the following:-
- A simple approach to an otherwise complex topic. Drawing references from live examples make the topics easily relatable for the reader;
- Conceptual areas have been dealt with deeply at the outset before delving into the practical aspects of the subject. This approach is very effective and helps avoid confusion and mix-up at the advanced stages which could be costly. For example clarity on development and control orientation in PMS or for that matter PMS with regard to it's bearing on 'business strategy' & 'competitive advantages' to start with are great examples of such approach.
- The book takes a seasoned HR professional to a journey from the PMS in it's primitive avatar to it's digital transformation today in an effortless manner;
- The content in all the chapters are enriched with clear and easily understandable tables , a great feature of this Field Book;
- I am deeply impressed with the author's passion for details. A few topics that otherwise would have got skipped are included which makes this piece truly an inclusive one. Examples of handling extroverts, introverts and similar in PMS are such details that benefit the readers a lot.
- I enjoyed a section 'Line Manager assuming HR Manager role' for the reason that these are so prevalent now a days across organizations which needed to be done judiciously. The section clearly pinpoints the 'pros & cons' with an objective mindset which I am sure would be tips for Top Management who take such decisions.
At the end I wish to thank the authors to bring out such a great piece of work from their rich experience which would serve as a guide for the HR and Business Managers alike.
