Rachel is a writer of words, drawer of pictures and champion of silver linings. She exhibits widely, writes tirelessly and frequently creates slightly unhinged characters.
Her written work includes children’s stories and poems, clever advertising copy and lots of other stuff besides. Her illustrative work is a smorgasboard of giant, hand-printed poems, mind-bogglingly detailed gouache illustrations and a cacophony of quirky prints and etchings.
She explores the lovliness of words and the magic of pictures, revelling in a world of jam-eating miniature bears and other made-up animals.
Her work aims to capture a free way of thinking - one which makes you feel anything is possible, a feeling all too easily lost with the end of childhood. When we’re all grown-up, sometimes we just need a little nudge to remember it’s been there all along.
*Rachel has also been an air hostess, a garden designer and a lifeguard. She often runs a really long way and was once invited to the selection of the British ultra running team. She also once won a date with Man of the millennium and has been trying to live it down ever since.
Rachel Bright’s writing and Jim Field’s captivating illustrations are a hit once again! A beautiful storyline about keeping promises and loyalty, accompanied by the most dynamic and picturesque of pictures. A favourite once again.
Rachel Bright + Jim Field Books haven't gone wrong in our household yet. ❤️ Themes of sibling love and being there for each other always appealed to my little ones too. It is just as sweet as it's blurb promises! We recommend it!
J'adore !
The Pandas Who Promised shares with us an exciting adventure of two cute red panda cubs, Popo and Ketu, who explored the mountains together away from the comfort of their treetop nest. Unfortunately, this was against what they promised their caring, concerned mother – no mountains, no daytimes! As they travelled into the unknown, one big promise they did keep was to look out for each other, now and forever. Their joyous journey was soon followed by fear and suspense from a dangerous encounter. The sisters put up a brave front, eventually escaping (phew!) and hurrying their way back home. They were truly apologetic and learned their lesson. The story concluded with their mother being proud of them – for taking care of each other during the good and bad!
The writing featured nice rhymes and big words (...clouds drift in billows, ...bamboo-leaf pillows) making it an absolutely fun and expressive read. My dear son, Sherraz, was mesmerised and focused throughout! As we flipped through the big, delicate pages, we enjoyed the beautiful illustrations. The colourful designs were tastefully placed, with a good balance of magical mountain sceneries and up-close adventures of the two red panda cubs. Just like them, we were transported into a memorable adventure!

I would like to thank Definitely Books for this review copy in exchange for my honest review!
The Pandas Who Promised is an absolutely delightful story that combines Rachel Bright's signature charm with a heartfelt message about keeping promises and the power of teamwork. The tale of the two lovable pandas, Panda and Pandora, is both entertaining and meaningful, teaching young readers the importance of responsibility and friendship in a gentle, relatable way.
The rhyming text is playful yet impactful, making it a joy to read aloud. The illustrations are vibrant and expressive, bringing the pandas' adventures to life and keeping little ones engaged with every turn of the page.
This book is perfect for teaching kids about honesty and trust, all while sparking their imaginations. My child couldn’t get enough of the adorable pandas and their fun journey. It’s a beautifully crafted story that’s both entertaining and inspiring—an instant favorite for storytime! Highly recommended for kids and parents alike.
Want beloofd is beloofd.
We got the Norwegian version. The rhymes feel a bit forced in it, but it worked okay. I was so excited to get this book, I love red pandas! I am passing that on to my 2 year old daughter. It's such a sweet story, and maybe a bit relatable too. A(n over)protective mom, and a child who wants to adventure and breaks the rules. Luckily that child has a sister, who comes along to save her so that they don't break their final promise: to look out for each other, which was the most important. I actually teared up at the end!
Todella kauniisti kuvitettu kirja kahden kultapandan seikkailusta. Loppuratkaisukin on opettavainen olematta liian imelä. Rachel Brightin kirjoista on tykätty meillä ennenkin ja tämä on mielestäni ehdottomasti parempaa osastoa.
Deze serie is geweldig! Do I need to say more?
