What would you do if you found a tunnel beneath your shed?
What if you knew it led to a whole other world?
And what if that world might be home to a dragon ... with two heads?
Professor Clive Oddney has no doubts - he must investigate!
Armed with his late Uncle Cuthbert's journal of mysterious creatures, the retired naturalist and his loyal friend Magnus, the sharp-witted magpie, embark on adventure into Otherland. Their quest? To seek out The Two-Headed Firedrake. Will they find it? Not if the mad, the bad and the downright weird buttock-snapping inhabitants of this world have anything to do about it.
One thing is for certain, an adventure as epic as this one, will rely upon the strength of true friendship.
Like the Pevensie siblings in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, here our protagonists enter a strange fantasy land through an everyday wooden household staple - the shed.
With husband and wife sharing the writing and illustrating duties, we are treated to a funny story about a Professor discovering his late uncle's journal directing him towards Otherland... accessible through the garden.
While Prof Oddney and his Bananaman-like Crow sidekick Magnus the talking magpie start out through a tunnel, the professor's nosey neighbour refuses to take her eyes off the shed into which they have vanished (much to the weary chagrin of her husband).
In Otherland, readers will delight in the pictures of the pair meeting a host of fascinating fantasy creatures, obtaining their own dragon and questing for a Two-Headed Firedrake.
Having finished this, I can't now recall why the quest has to be completed, but I do remember I enjoyed the very silly goings-on, some wonderful pictures, lots of memorable side characters, in a story I feel like I would have written myself as a teenager.
A different sort of pairing for an older children's picture book, the Professor isn't quite stuffed-shirt material, but is definitely not Indiana Jones either! He's gasping for a cup of tea in fact.
A good length for an older reader as a chapter book, and one that would suit ages 6-9 ideally.
With thanks to the publisher for providing a sample reading copy.
This book has already become a firm favourite in our house. We read it all together and it’s been such a treat…with our kids especially excited for each nightly instalment
The story is witty and engaging…a jolly great romp as well as being an absolute hoot! Adding some of the most exquisitely unique artwork that I’ve seen in a children’s story book, it truly is a sight to behold. I cannot recommend it enough.
Both my children were completely enthralled and I’m sure our third will be when she’s old enough.
Honest to goodness, if you’re looking for something to really capture your kids imagination this summer holiday…well you really couldn’t pick anything more perfect.
