The subject of networking is one that I have a professional interest in. This is partly because I am responsible for managing a large network of computers, and partly because I am doing a Cisco Certificate in Network Administration (CCNA) through my work.

This book is the companion piece for the second of four modules. The normal learning process is done on a computer using a web browser, but this is a handy way of reading up when I am on the bus or at home of an evening. This approach produces both the best thing about this book and the worst thing.

Best Thing: You don't have to have a computer in front of you to read about the various subjects that the CCNA covers.

Worst Thing: There are a lot of references to animations and online practicals that are available through the course for enhancing understanding and testing knowledge. Also, often the images are a little small on the Kindle edition unless you open the image and zoom in. This is a common problem with e-readers when the books in question aren't pure text.

The subjects that this book in the series covers are quite dry. Things like Access Control Lists (ACL), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Network Address Translation (NAT), but the text is usually quite clearly written. Some of the more complicated subjects are difficult to follow, but that is because they are difficult subjects.

I will be making lots of use of this book during the upcoming break as I prepare for a module exam after Christmas!
