You can run your own web design business from home – all you need is a computer and an internet connection.
Working for a design company? Freelancing? Under-utilised, unappreciated or uninspired? This could be the book for you.
Would you like to build websites for clients directly instead of going through middlemen? Would you like to work when you'd like, on what you'd like, and with whom you'd like? This could be the book for you.
This book explains how to set up your business from home – the hardware and software you'll need. How to get clients – long term, quality clients that will recommend you and give you ongoing work. How to run web design projects. And how to diversify your business going forward.
This is not a "get rich quick" book. You are encouraged to start in your spare time and slowly but surely build up your long-term professional contacts and online authority. This will provide you with a solid base for whatever you want to achieve with your online business in the future.
Rob Cubbon was born in Kent an awfully long time ago. He now lives mostly in Thailand running a design business, selling courses and t-shirts, blogging and engaging in other creative pastimes.
A few years ago you could find him stuck behind a computer in a soulless office block in central London.
Being your own boss is an incredibly liberating experience but it can be difficult as well. There never seems to be enough hours in the day for what we want to do.
Rob is driven to help people experience the positive side of entrepreneurship. To encourage others to live their dreams doing what they want to do - and to get paid doing so!
Lots of great info here for novice and intermediate web designers. First half is mostly world building, but the book aims to take questions out of the heads of new designers and instead provide insight on how to do certain things and why to do them. All of the questions you may have regarding payment, services to use, invoice, charge rate, services to provide, are packaged in this book. Full text to give to a client for FAQs is provided as well. Maybe 10 pages too long, but excellent read.
This was a very informative booklet on how to start your own Web design business. The booklet is filled with great nuggets and offers the right information to get started.
I particularly enjoyed that the author provided the names of awesome tools and where you can find them. This was very helpful.
I can't wait to read this book. I've seen some of Rob's videos on UDemy and was well impressed. If his book is anything like them then it is well worth getting.
This tiny book/booklet is a good initial source for someone hoping to be a freelance web designer or to even start their own design business from home. It goes into how to go about setting up this type of business -- basic stuff, such as the tools you'll need, hardware, software, etc. It goes into how to get clients and how to keep them, how to get referrals, how to get clients you can establish relationships with who will give you ongoing work. While it never touches on the actual coding, it does touch on running design projects and the best way to do so. The author of this book could have expanded it and written a whole lot more, like adding about 200 more pages, but I don't think that was his intent. I think he just wanted to provide a quick start guide, for all intents and purposes, and if that was his intent, I think he succeeded pretty well. It's really not a bad book. I've read several books on this subject now, some very long and comprehensive, and this was one of the better ones. Four stars and recommended -- as a quick start guide.
This kind of books is hard to rate if one didn't get to test the advice given and see how well it worked. So just keep in mind that I am just somebody trying to get into IT business and exploring different possibilities. and working for yourself and from home is always appealing.
I really liked the book. Short and to the point.Gives one ideas on how to proceed with the idea. What tools to use, how to attract clients and some suggestions that wouldn't even come to my mind without any experience. Good starter, hope to useit one day.
*I got this book for free through giveaways in exchange for an honest review*
I've liked this book so far, it's absolutely excellent for absolute beginners! I didn't finish it yet but found it very upfront in its tips. It won't tell you how to program websites of course, but it will give you a clear & quick brief on many tasks you will face in your web design projects. The book will cover: what tools you need in your freelance work (or business), how to get your first client, how to keep great clients and get rid of bad ones, how to contract with programmers & designers to get your work done and maintenance ..etc.
in general, this book will give much info about web design freelancing whether you're veteran freelancer or just about to start!
I got this book in a giveaway, and I am impressed with the amount of information in such a short book. If you are thinking about starting a web design business from home, you need to read this book. Most of the information is very simple, but some of the ideas are things the author has probably learned along the way by trial and error, so it is invaluable information for the reader.
I enjoyed the information and I guess I expected more detailed information on the actual systems and maybe some examples of the business day to day process. But thanks for the insight this book at least gets you started and gives you an idea of what the business has in store.
I wanted to give this book the highest rating simply because of the subject matter, but I guess I was looking for a book that covered running a web design business in further detail. I know it was only $2.99, but after reading it, I walked away feeling empty. Not much depth.
