Baxter Savage is bored at his job as a code monkey (aka computer programmer). He dreams of leaving his job for better but his sensual dreams of the company’s receptionist, Anna Marie, keep him at his job for now.

Anna Marie is the low woman on the totem pole who wants to be more and dreams of hitting the big time. When she’s asked to spy on a suspected secrets thief for a promotion, she can’t believe her luck. Only it means spending time with a code monkey, namely Baxter.

Baxter is thrilled to have Anna Marie’s attention and Anna Marie soon finds that the code monkey is a lot more interesting than she ever thought possible.

When she finds herself falling for him, will she answer the call of her heart or of her dreams? Can they catch the real thief together or will the code monkey lose it all?

Growing up, I had a vivid imagination with lots of imaginary playmates and stuffed animals to keep me company. I even had crayon box adventures where the colors had a kingdom and tales to tell. And who says pink is a girl color? In my world, he was a prince.

From the time I could form my letters, this translated into fanciful writings from poems on eye shadow (I was six) to a story about an Island world I created with animals and people. Writing was something I always did.

But it never clicked. I drifted in and out of genres, mystery, animal stories, thrillers, toying with it, playing at it. I would finish some projects and store them away. It never occurred to me that this pastime could be my life's passion if I let it. Until my world collided with rediscovery.

As a teenager, I devoured books, especially romances but drifted out of the genre as an adult. On a weekend trip to the beach, I read four romance novels. I had a flash of inspiration. I could write these! Romance was where my heart lay. Within six weeks I had written my first romance novel.

I went back and revamped a thriller that I had written a few years before, making it a romance. And I became serious about my craft, trying to soak in all I could about writing. I began to write on a roleplay loop and the practice has been invaluable. I've cut my teeth there and learned what works in writing and what doesn't. And I've finally accepted who I am. A storyteller at heart, be it tales told to my children, an erotic piece about lovers or about a vampire looking for love.

So come with me and take a journey where, just like in my crayon box, things aren't always what they seem.

This was just an OK read for me. Maybe since I am a code monkey IRL, I had immediate problems with how Anna Marie made so many assumptions about Baxter. First, he can't possibly have ambition since he works where she does. Then, she finds out he's a gamer, so he must be a loser, spending all his free time playing games. Then, she finds out about his side business and immediately assumes it's more a hobby than anything else.

Baxter, on the other hand, thinks Anna Marie can do anything she sets her mind to. He makes sure she doesn't put herself down in front of him, tries to convince her to see herself as he sees her, he's completely supportive of her schooling and her dreams... in essence, he was really too good for her. Though he felt like the nerd watching the popular girl from afar. I did like her drive to become something, but I can't believe she'd go along with the "spy for promotion" thing without asking for more information. Also, I know there were issues with how she was raised, but I don't think that was fleshed out enough for me to care.

When I first started this, I thought it might be a DNF. I wasn't getting into the story. I didn't like Anna Marie. I continued on, and while the general idea of the story was nice, so much of it felt trite to me. I didn't find the sex to be all that steamy. I really didn't feel much of a connection coming from Anna Marie's side at all. I knew Baxter cared, but even their first night (their second date?) seemed rushed.

The ending, I felt like I should be seeing "mwah ah ah" as dialogue based on how the bad guy was speaking, and then cue music, "duh da-dah!" when the guy saved the day. Really, Anna Marie should have batted her eyes and exclaimed "My hero!" based on how they were all acting.

I didn't hate it, but it's definitely not a favorite.

Liked it, but as someone who does understand code there were some things that bugged me. For the layperson though this is a good story with a cute geek for the hero.

A few moments made me think Armstrong got all her gaming knowledge from the internet, like having die-hard gamers own a Wii console. Yes the Wii is a gaming platform, but it's not marketed at or usually played by gamers - and Anna Marie should have known what it was. Also Baxter mentions binary code. Very rarely do people actually code in binary anymore.

And then there's this style in the writing:
... "as the song by Sir Mix A Lot and covered by Jonathon Coulton said. The lyrics praised butts, particularly ones that were bodacious."

Sometimes you can just say she "Got Back" without giving us the history of a song.
