Running with the Wolf: A sapphic paranormal romance novella

Rate this book
Beatrice Blackstone has always believed herself to be ordinary — until her first vision.

When she sees the death of someone else and feels their pain as though it’s her own, her grandmother reveals that she is a witch, and the chilling visions are the consequences of her coven being hunted.

The only way for Beatrice to stay safe as she explores her newly awakened magic is with werewolf and bodyguard-for-hire, Leighton Myers, at her side. But as the two are pursued through Europe in an attempt to track down Beatrice’s coven before the hunters, Beatrice soon discovers that Leighton has secrets of her own that may just endanger everyone. Will their developing feelings get in the way of what’s important, or will Beatrice find more than just magic in her strange new world?

It's no surprise that I loved this. Bryony Rosehurst never fails to hit the spot with bitesize romances packed full of tender, sapphic love that make me feel like squealing (plus a little bit of spice to top it all off!!) I was obsessed with Leighton as the broody werewolf girlfriend I didn't know i needed. She can call me 'little witch' any day!!! I also loved the subtle world-building and how this book took me travelling through Europe (if only to run away from sketchy witch hunters!) Another five star for this talented author!

LOVED!! Okay so I pretty much enjoy everything Bryony writes. First Comes Marriage and When Love Barges in being up there. However, they have some competition with this one for sure. It was perfect.

I highly recommend if you like :-
- Fantasy worlds
- A romance between a witch and someone who can change into a wolf!
- The whole "you're actually a witch" happening to someone who believed they were like any other person
- Discovering magic
- Found Family
- Fun and loveable characters
- Being hunted
- Battles to the death
- A fairly quick read (about 150 pages)
- Something that provides the right amount of character development, world building and side story such as the romance elements

A wonderful book for getting cosy on the sofa on a cold rainy night. Blanket on, cup of tea in hand, perhaps a biscuit or two!

Running with the Wolf was an entertaining and sweet story of trust, grief, love, and self-discovery. You should pick it up if you're in the mood for something queer with romance and magic in a modern twist.

I don't actually read a lot of straight up romance, but I really should because that warm fuzzy feeling you're left with is so worth it. And this story was no exception!
The Witch-Wolf combo is a classic, and it works so well with all the lore of covens and packs and hidden magic behind it. The story was engaging and well-written and the characters felt very real and complex.

The story begins with Beatrice, a 29yo plant-shop keeper, discovering that she's in fact a witch, and not only that, but someone is hunting down and killing the witches of the coven she's bonded to - her included. Not entirely your best Monday morning revelation... Going from there it's a race against time to find her coven, understand her magic, and survive the hunters with the help of buff - but tender - werewolf Leighton.

The trope of discovering your magic is somewhat nostalgic to me. I was one of those kids who never felt they fitted in and honestly kinda hoped that someone would come along and tell me it was because I was a witch. Alas, I can only read about them. It's stayed one of my favorite fantasy tropes and it was refreshing meeting it in a setting with an adult and (somewhat) functional person, instead of YA.

The main couple was wonderful! The "bodyguard trope" is the perfect vessel for not quite an enemy-to-lovers but more an I'll-tolerate-you-but-neither-of-us-are-happy-with-this-arrangement and the growing trust and connection between Witch and Wolf is endearing to follow. I was a big fan of Leighton's derisive nicknaming Beatrice to "little witch" that slowly morphed into something very loving and precious for both of them.

The setting of Europe was also a selling point for me, as I often find 'the market' flooded with stories set in the US, but not so much in my own backyard of Europe. A big chunk of the story sets in Prague and I've just visited the city this spring and might have been to the exact monastery that is mentioned!

Anyway, despite it being a sweet romance with lots of little humor bits, there are some darker themes, too, and especially the connection between the coven witches that leads them to experience each member's cruel murder is horrifying!
As someone who's usually deep in epic fantasy, I would've loved to know more about the witch hunters and their background, too. This being a novella and with the focus on the romantic development, it's not needed though.

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I loved this novella!
It was so easy to read and I loved both Beatrice and Leighton and their developing relationship that felt so real even in such a short space of time. I loved the wolf shifter / magic aspect and thought the action was fast paced enough that I didn't want to put the book down at any point.
The setting was also really exciting from as the couple take us from Yorkshire to various countries in Europe and it felt as if I was right there with them.
For such a small and quick read, I really felt the character development and it was the perfect length for the plot to play out.

Thanks to the author for allowing me to read an early copy. I leave this review voluntarily.

Finding out you're a witch is one thing, that your coven is being hunted another. Beatrice has been thrust into a world that she didn't even know existed, and paired with a wolf for her protection. Except time isn't necessarily on their side, and perhaps fate has more in plan for them...

This is a tale of shifters and magic, discovery and survival, of a journey against time, of love, and deciding what is important in life.

And it was an absolute joy to read. Leighton and Beatrice are adorable, and watching the relationship grow was wonderful. The take of magic is interesting, the journey engaging, and the story is very well written. It's decently paced. low angst, and an easy read.

And I certainly wouldn't mind reading some more about them if they got another book at some point.

Beatrice Blackstone has always seen odd shadows and such, but ignored it. Until now, when her Nanna reveals that she's a witch... and something is hunting them.

Werewolf Leighton Myers wants nothing to do with them, but she needs their help to find the witch that killed her brother. So she agrees to protect Beatrice until she can reach her coven for safety.

Good opposites attract romance, with some dark supernatural adventures. I liked Bea and Leighton, and their relationship progresses realistically.

4 out of 5 stars.

Struggled with the pacing in this one. Ultimately, it didn't hook me, unfortunately.

Running with the Wolf by Bryony Rosehurst may be my favourite book from this author to date. Beatrice Blackstone is blithely going about her day blissfully unaware not only of the danger she is in but also of the truth of her heritage. Beatrice is a witch, a secret that has been kept from her all her life, but when she has a vision of another witch's death , the truth comes out. Her magic has come to life and if she is to have any hope of evading the hunters that are picking off witches she will have to find her coven. The trip will be dangerous, but protection is on hand in the form of bodyguard for hire Leighton Myers, who just happens to also be a werewolf. Despite her dislike of witches Leighton agrees to help Beatrice and so the unlikely pair begin a journey across Europe that will be dangerous, deadly and just a little spicy.
Once again the author has packed so much story into a short book, and because I fell in love with the wonderful characters she created I simply could not put it down. The pairing of Beatrice and Leighton was a delight, not quite opposites attract or grumpy/sunshine, but with those vibes and I loved seeing them fall for each other on the page. There's more to this book than just the romance however, there is a surprising amount of world building and storytelling , something that I really appreciated. If you are looking for a paranormal Sapphic romance with a lot of heart this is definitely the book for you.
I read and ARC courtesy of the author, all opinions are my own.
