Trigger Point: An Angela Hardwicke Sci-Fi Thriller

Rate this book
“Russ Colchamiro has staked out a territory of sci-fi mystery uniquely his own. With Angela Hardwicke, he mines a vein of pulp fiction gold.” –Nicholas Meyer, writer/director of Star Trek The Wrath of Khan

For fans of Blade Runner, Doctor Who, and John Wick

Intergalactic private eye Angela Hardwicke has just been released from prison.

On her first solo case back on the street, she’s hired by a paranoid pimp, whose best earner has been murdered under suspicious circumstances. Meanwhile, Hardwicke’s protégé Eric Whistler is missing, forcing her to partner with a sketchy police detective and a reclusive old friend as the fabric of spacetime begins to unravel.

Hardwicke’s road to redemption leads her through a harrowing journey of ancient theories, terrified sex workers, nightmares, ghosts, and the Dreamscape… and demons from her tortured past who can no longer be ignored.

In Trigger Point, the fifth novel in Russ Colchamiro’s high-octane series, Hardwicke is forced to decide whose fate matters most—and what, or who, she’s willing to sacrifice in order to protect it.

"This book totally gives you that quest vibe! Angela Hardwicke's basically a space detective doing side missions but in a killer sci-fi world with high stakes. It’s like you’re leveling up with every clue she finds. Definitely a win if you’re into the whole sci-fi detective thing. And man, the pacing? Top-notch

ARC 2.5⭐️ | This book had some intriguing elements but ultimately left me feeling a bit disconnected and overwhelmed. While the FMC’s inner turmoil added depth, her constant overthinking and scattered thoughts occasionally made the narrative feel a little unfocused.

Although advertised as a standalone, the story heavily references a larger universe and other books in the series. This made certain aspects confusing, as many characters seemed to rely on backstory or context from the broader series. I found it hard to connect with them or fully immerse myself in the world.

The dialogues were a letdown for me. While I understand they were meant to reflect stereotypical speech patterns, especially among gangsters, the excessive swearing across other characters felt unnecessary at times and detracted from the overall experience.

The world-building showed promise, but the storytelling felt a bit chaotic at times. While I appreciate a bit of mystery, I felt there were too many unanswered questions, and I didn’t find the ending as satisfying as I hoped.

I usually don’t write negative ARC reviews so I am so so sorry, but I think honesty is important so that the writer can truly re-access and improve moving forward. This book might resonate more with readers familiar with the series, but for me, it didn’t quite deliver on its potential.

Thank you still for reaching out!

Trigger Point

Book Review Day!

First of all, the cover artwork is outstanding!

This is book 5 in the Angela Hardwicke Sci fi thriller book series.

I read book 4, Blunt Force Rising and I loved it, so I was very excited to start book 5 and I was not disappointed!  It is very easy to get reinvested into Angela because she is such a force and a strong female lead!

She gets released from prison and looking towards redemption gets hired by a shady pimp that is determined that his best money maker was taken out suspiciously.  Angela doesn't even have Eric to help so she is stuck with someone she doesn't quite trust to work a case that turns out to be quite a deep winding dark road with new and old threats at every turn.

This book kicked off with a bang and kept me glued to the pages with intricate details of the continuing world building with the complexities of all the characters in a tangled web to get lost in, in the best possible way!

This is the first work that I have read by the author and without a doubt I can say that it has been a surprise, I can already tell that I loved this impressive work of science fiction.

It has many elements that keep you hooked as a reader from the first moment, full of action, danger and suspense.

As a reader I loved how well constructed the story is, the mystery has escalated, becoming something complex and fascinating, I especially enjoyed reading how the protagonist made difficult decisions.

Finally, I would like to highlight how beautiful the ending was and how the entire plot takes depth, the connections throughout the story, in a word, impressive.

A sensational read

This isn't my usual genre, but I had heard good things about Trigger Point so I gave it a try. I'm glad I did.
Angela Hardwicke’s character is rich, nuanced, and humanly flawed. The author has created a deeply complex character that kept me reading into the night.
Then there's the layered plot with excellent pacing. It takes a special sort of author to write so fully...especially in Sci-Fi. There are far too many pretenders and not enough original contenders anymore, which is why I shy away from the genre.
Russ Colchamiro is a contender.
Highly recommended.

Angela Hardwicke is not a typical detective—she’s complex and intriguing, just released from prison and already thrown into a whirlwind of mystery. The mix of sci-fi elements with a gritty noir atmosphere is just brilliant. I was pulled into a ancient secrets and cosmic plot twists. It's a perfect mix of suspense and scifi. If you're a fan of high-stakes mysteries with a sci-fi plot twist, this is definitely one to pick up! Five stars!

Another amazing book by this talented writer who draws you in with his stories. This is book 5 of the Angela Hardwicke Sci-fi mystery series.
It is a fantastic series and it can be read as a stand-alone. I read book 4 and liked it and this one is just as good. Very well written. Fast pace action and mystery.
Wow the ending!

A Twisty Blend of Science Fiction, Mystery, and Wry Humor – ‘Trigger Point’ by Russ Colchamiro

Russ Colchamiro’s Trigger Point is one of those rare science fiction thrillers that takes readers on a heady adventure across space and time, yet stays grounded with relatable humor and rich characterizations. With an inventive plot and a snappy pace, Trigger Point is a book that keeps its audience guessing, chuckling, and occasionally holding their breath as it all unfolds. It’s a fun, smart, and thoroughly engaging read for anyone who loves a bit of brain-tickling action with heart.

Plot Overview

The story kicks off with a murder, but this isn’t your average whodunit. We’re not dealing with just any murder; this crime sparks a cosmic ripple that has the potential to unravel the universe’s structure itself. Enter the Galaxy Series Investigations, an elite team of agents with a unique mission—resolving intergalactic mysteries before they destabilize reality. These agents are tasked with protecting the “Multiverse,” a concept that Colchamiro creatively constructs as both vast and incredibly intricate, combining scientific theories and fictional elements in a way that feels fresh and plausible.

Our protagonist, Angela Hardwicke, is a tough, no-nonsense investigator with sharp instincts and a dry wit that adds a distinct flavor to her character. Hardwicke is given the daunting task of figuring out who is behind the murder and, more importantly, why it matters on a cosmic level. Her journey to uncovering the truth is packed with cryptic clues, high-stakes confrontations, and strange technologies that push the boundaries of science and fantasy.

As the case twists and turns, Hardwicke’s investigation pulls her into the orbit of powerful enemies, strange allies, and, in classic sci-fi fashion, a few scientific conundrums that will make any enthusiast of quantum mechanics and alternate realities feel right at home. But Trigger Point doesn’t get bogged down in jargon or overly complicated explanations; it balances the intricate science-fiction elements with straightforward storytelling, ensuring that readers aren’t lost amid the technological marvels or theoretical underpinnings.

Characterization

Angela Hardwicke is undoubtedly the star of the book. Her character combines the no-nonsense attitude of a classic noir detective with a complexity that comes through in her moral quandaries and personal struggles. Colchamiro’s portrayal of Hardwicke stands out, as he gives her enough edge to feel like a hardened investigator while also letting glimpses of her vulnerabilities surface. She’s a character that feels tangible, a rare feat in a genre that can sometimes rely on archetypes rather than fully realized personalities.

Supporting characters, too, are well-developed, each adding unique layers to the story. From her enigmatic team members to unpredictable informants, every person Hardwicke encounters has something to contribute to the plot. One of the book’s strengths is how it allows these secondary characters to have their own motivations and histories, which, in turn, make the world of Trigger Point feel lived-in and authentically complex.

Setting and World-Building

World-building in Trigger Point is another high point. Colchamiro constructs a vibrant multiverse where different realities coexist, each with its own set of rules and dangers. The book vividly describes each setting, from the gritty, dark alleys of a futuristic cityscape to the bizarre and otherworldly environments that Hardwicke encounters. The environments themselves almost function as additional characters, influencing events and adding flavor to the narrative.

The author also subtly embeds social commentary within these settings, using the multiverse as a lens through which readers can explore themes of power, greed, and ethics. This extra layer enriches the novel, making it more than just an action-driven story but rather a thought-provoking exploration of humanity’s role in a universe much bigger and stranger than we usually imagine.

Writing Style

Colchamiro’s writing style is accessible yet clever, with just the right balance of humor and suspense. His knack for dialogue, especially, shines through, bringing each character’s voice to life while keeping the plot rolling forward at a steady pace. The book has a breezy, almost cinematic quality to it, making it easy to visualize scenes and keeping the reader thoroughly immersed in the story.

Humor is another standout feature. Trigger Point manages to take a dark and high-stakes premise and inject it with enough levity to prevent it from ever feeling too heavy. Angela Hardwicke’s dry sense of humor and the occasional absurdity of her situations add a delightful contrast to the intensity of her mission, giving the book a unique tone that sets it apart from many of its genre counterparts.

Themes and Message

Beneath the entertaining plot, Trigger Point explores deeper themes about fate, personal responsibility, and the quest for meaning in an uncertain universe. It’s a book that raises questions about how much control we really have over our lives and whether certain events are destined or simply random. This exploration of fate versus free will is subtly woven into the narrative, encouraging readers to reflect on their own beliefs about these complex topics.

Without giving too much away, the resolution of Trigger Point offers an unexpected twist that ties together these themes and gives the reader a satisfying conclusion while leaving room for potential future adventures.

Final Thoughts

Trigger Point by Russ Colchamiro is a wonderfully inventive book that offers more than the typical sci-fi thriller. It’s packed with action and intrigue, yes, but it’s also filled with humor, humanity, and heart. Readers will appreciate the balance of high-concept science with accessible storytelling, making this a book for both seasoned sci-fi lovers and those new to the genre.

This novel is more than just a romp through the multiverse; it’s an exploration of what it means to be human in a vast, often incomprehensible universe. Whether you come for the intergalactic mystery or the snappy dialogue, Trigger Point has a little something for everyone and is an absolute must-read for fans of speculative fiction.

Spoilers: The Angela Hardwicke Science Fiction Thriller Series is no stranger to bringing us mesmerizing settings. The series explores the universe of Eternity, where various citizens do their part to help control, create, and repair the Universe. Everything from Patches who fix the tears in the Cosmos, to Designers who decide where the stars, planets, and galaxies are arranged, to the Minders who oversee the entire Universe and beyond, to detectives like Angela, who keep criminals off the spaceways and from messing with the order of the ‘Verse.

It seemed like with Trigger Point, the fifth book in the series there was nowhere else for Angela to go. Well, Russ Colchamiro, the author, pulled a fast one on us. There was somewhere else to go. When the outside is explored most thoroughly, the best place to go is inside. Inside the mind of his lead character. Here Angela is at her most personal and angst ridden as she explores her latest adventure which puts those closest to her at risk.

Angela is recovering from her last case which resulted in the death of a friend and where she ended up demoted, in debt, and technically working under her former partner turned boss, Eric Whistler. She is definitely not in the mood for a new case but that’s what she gets. She is hired to uncover the mysterious death of a sex worker. Even worse, she finds that Whistler has gone missing, well most of him. He seems to be stuck somewhere in time and space and she can make out his faint image and hear cryptic garbled messages but doesn’t know where or possibly when he is. These cases become intertwined and lead Angela right into a conspiracy concerning the Patches, where her estranged lover, Eddie works and her young son, Owen is being trained.

This is definitely the strongest Angela Hardwicke volume in terms of character development, much of it is laid at the feet of Angela herself. She often referred to parts of her past in previous books but this is where it really comes forward, particularly in chapters where she talks to her estranged parents (this is the first volume that I can recall where we actually learn that Angela even has parents.),

We learn that Angela's sister died of cancer and they still feel the grief leading to Angela's father to withdraw from the family and she to embrace a darker side. She also became pregnant as a teenager ending with the death of her infant daughter. These losses caused Angela to become obsessed with her detective career. She couldn't protect herself from death but could protect other people and the Universe from it.

Angela is also haunted by nightmares and memories which she lives on the edge of the Universe can be more real than most on Earth. She has conversations with her late friend where she reveals her remorse and missteps in the previous case.

She also bears a lot of guilt for what happened to Whistler. Not only for his current predicament but leading him into becoming a detective, acquiring an overdeveloped sense of justice, and having a reckless attitude in solving these cases. She isn't proud of how far Whistler has come. She's worried about what she turned him into and where this life will lead him.

Angela's tenderest moments are when she reunited with Eddie and Owen. It's heartwarming to see the normally hard boiled cynical badass Angela figuratively melt into a puddle of maternal goo when she and Owen are together. He's a sweet smart kid who brings out an innocent protective warmth within his mother. They may be separated but mother and son are still devoted to each other.

Angela and Eddie's relationship is no longer romantic but they are still amicable towards each other. Eddie actually has more interactions with Owen since they are both Patches so he has the loving ex and parental caretaker that is often reserved for female characters in most private detective novels.

He worries about Owen but also his ex putting herself in danger but also knows his concerns will be dismissed. Even though Angela is romantically involved with Darren, a rock musician, she and Eddie have retained a friendship almost like surrogate siblings that defend one another and have each other's backs.

All of this development towards Angela's character is used in dramatic ways, particularly when she faces the antagonist in this book. There are hints that this character has been around since the first book, Crackle and Fire, and has five books worth of material to use against her and boy do they. It becomes a battle of wills in which Angela's own self worth and sanity are at stake as she faces this character.

If this book is not the last Angela Hardwicke book, I would be very surprised. There are a lot of hints that indicate this is a final volume or if not that, certainly a change in format and formula. Many of the long time subplots such as Angela’s messed up home life and her and Whistler’s statuses are altered considerably.

Many characters come to some raw conclusions that indicate their journeys will be coming to an end or they will be in different places in the next volume. It's safe to say that Angela Hardwicke Science Fiction Thrillers will not be the same again.

In a cosmic realm where The Institute repairs tears in space time and people have cybernetic implants, Angela Hardwicke is a Sci-Fi Private Eye. When a pimp calls on her to investigate the death of his "top slot," Angela finds herself dragged into a much bigger case, involving her missing partner and the potential end of everything.

One thing I really appreciate about Russ Colchamiro's writing style is his pacing. From start to finish, every scene felt like it needed to be there and they all helped to move the story along, either in regards to the plot or character development. It helped to keep the momentum building and really gave the impression that Angela was against the clock on this one.

The supporting characters, bar one, which I'll discuss shortly, are all well-rounded and feel like they continue to exist in the world when Angela isn't alongside them. It makes the world feel lived-in and the characters feel distinct and unique. They also have their own relationships with Angela, again helping to build the world we find ourselves in.

There were some things I disliked, but I feel like they're probably limited to this specific book, and not the series as a whole. The first is that most of the chapters had references to the fourth book of the series. I understand that to provide context, previous events need to be mentioned, but this happened in almost all of the chapters, which felt very repetitive.

The character of Dante, a pimp, was very stereotypical and clichéd. He was like Huggy Bear on steroids, and his dialogue and dialect felt problematic. Another thing that made me uncomfortable with this book that probably doesn't extend into the rest of the Angela Hardwicke series is that because the case revolved around a dead prostitute, Colchamiro made a lot of references to various bodily fluids and sexual abuse that felt a bit excessive and unnecessary at times. I believe that people might appreciate Trigger Point having a trigger warning at the start.

For fans of the series, I think this is probably a slam dunk. For people new to the series, although the book does work as a standalone, I'd probably recommend starting from earlier in the series, because this was the first that I've read and I'm interested enough to want to read more Angela Hardwicke books, but feel like there's no point reading the fourth due to the constant recaps about it spoiling what happened. If you want to read the fourth book without already knowing the main plot points, read it before reading Trigger Point. Overall, for fans of science-fiction, private investigator stories and space-time shenanigans, I think that Trigger Point (and probably the rest of the series) will scratch that itch, but if you're triggered by sexual abuse, this is maybe the book in the series you'll want to avoid.

Russ Colchamiro writes a thrilling tale with Trigger Point

In Trigger Point, the reader is introduced to Angela Hardwicke, a PI who takes on cases for time travel, shapeshifters, and anything that the Intergalactic Crime Division drops on her lap. I haven't read anything by this author before, and what a hidden gem. I enjoyed it so much, that I have now followed the author and look for more books to read. Trigger Point is part of the Angela Hardwicke Mystery series, and this is volume five, and I guess I'm behind, so I will have to at some point read the first four. This author has a grand imagination, and talent for showing the story. Angela Hardwicke is also the narrator, which gives the story an interesting perspective. Angela is strong and brave and is determined to helping others. Her job gives her that edge and motivation in solving cases, and trying to be less emotionally motivated, and more focused. Angela is determined and tenacious and determined to get the job done no matter what. This story is grand read. I don't think you'd want to find yourself as one of her targets, but maybe one of her clients. I hope to read more books by Russ Colchamiro. It's a whole new world, literally, from what this reader is used to. Trigger Point is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book also write a review.

I admit, I didn’t read the previous books in the series, but: now I’m definitely adding to my tbr.

Our lead character Angela - is a force to be reckoned with, she is a private investigator and takes you on a mission.

If you thought this wouldn’t start off with a bang, think again, just when you’ve grown comfortable in her discomfort, something pivotal happens.

Her path is one of seeking redemption, whilst on the track of a shmiller. And watching things unfold through her lenses? Was an adventure in itself.

She will push buttons and break noses, if that means getting to the truth. As she should. 👌🏻

Did I peak your interest yet?
PS - there’s a shmiller on the loose.

This is book 5 and after reading book 4 I was super excited to give it my finest go! It can be read as a standalone. It didn’t take me that long, I spent most of my day off getting it done.

If you like sci-fi (which I secretly do) you’ll love this, although I won’t lie it wouldn’t be something I’d pick up in a store at first glance, I was happy for the opportunity to read it. Angela is no ordinary detective and as she’s just released from prison you’re thrown into a complete whirlpool of mystery, secrets and a plot twist.

Trigger Point is an engaging blend of technology, suspense, and good character development. Angela Hardwicke is a well-built protagonist, with conflicts as she dives deeper into a thrilling investigation.

The narrative pace is brisk without feeling rushed, and the futuristic world is depicted with precision. While some of the secondary characters could be fleshed out more, Hardwicke’s journey as both a detective and a person gives the story a strong emotional core.

Athrilling read for fans of sci-fi crime thrillers.
