If you are anime/manga collector or fan, you have had a burning desire to learn how to draw the popular characters by yourself. However, you may be worried that you cannot draw as well as people in art clubs or in cartoon clubs because drawing is difficult - don't worry, many people feel the same way. This series was written to help those who are interested in drawing, but are worried about the challenges involved with it. If you change the way you look at an object - even just a little, you can succeed.
One of the most well organized books I've found in this field of drawing. Tadashi Ozawa clearly did the right thing by showing that not all styles are the same and that different styles can express different things. This is the kind of book a beginner SHOULD look for. Something that is explained well by an actual Japanese person whose worked in the trade. Very good points are brought out and explained, such as perspective, anatomy, and dimensions in art.
Even after years of having this book, I sometimes open it when I'm feeling a little stuck on proportioning.
Profoundly disappointing as an art instruction guide. Way too much of the book is taken up going over details that are only helpful in those particular characters (not famous ones, just "types" with a lot of specific details). That said, the chapter of critiques is fairly useful, showing both "before" and "after" modifications that clean up the images, and critiquing both details and more foundational issues with the drawings. I don't think this spends any real time teaching the reasoning behind the style it seeks to teach.
