Science is all around us and it is scientists like these whose curiosity, tenacity, patience and brilliance helps us understand the how, why, and what of things within and around us.
Vaishali once again brings to us a deeply researched book on a topic less known. Her writing is simple to understand of children and adults alike. As with her other books, history is the key to understanding our present and future as well, she does this brilliantly.
From the annals of history she brings to us the life and work of 10 Indian Scientists who we may not have heard of. These are the giants on whose shoulders several of the modern-day inventions and discoveries stand.
Short books are difficult to write because topics and content selection become a key. The book does a great job providing details of the scientists but also an introduction to various streams of science.
Apart from the science, what is also fascinating is how these people who lived under colonial rule (most of them) managed to break barriers and achieve great things. All of these came from difficult economic backgrounds and did not have access to facilities – but this did not stop them. Their brilliance, grit, determination, and persistent efforts are truly inspiring and a lesson for the new generation to work hard for their passion.
