I do not read horror novels. This is the book that taught me that I do not read horror novels or watch horror movies. This book, and the movie made from the book, scared me so badly as a teenager in the late 1970's that I haven't watched a single horror movie since, nor have I read a single horror novel (with the exception of Anne Rice's work, which I dearly love and don't consider to be scary).
I watched the movie adaptation of The Other one night when I was about sixteen. I had never heard of The Other, but I somehow started watching it on TV one night when no one else happened to be at home. This was in the dark ages before cable TV; we had three channels and no remote control for the TV set. I must have tuned in the "movie of the week" or something. Anyway, how bad could it be?
It turned out that it could be BAD, with a capital B. By the time I realized that I was watching a horror story, night had fallen. I was in a dark room in an empty house, and I was too scared to get up off the couch to walk across the room to turn off the television! I sat through the whole film, and it taught me a valuable lesson: I have no tolerance for horror.
To this day, I wouldn't reread or re-watch The Other for a hundred dollar bill! (Dave shudders at the memory).
