Only writing a review for this because I have to. I really love books with dragons and books with pretty covers but this one was so bad like I tried to like it. I really did. Even when it was not hitting I blamed my slump and put it down for a while and not once did I feel like picking it up but later on I finally picked it up, out of obligation not because I wanted too. I want to say that It's been too long since I read this book to remember anything but truth be told the hour after I finished it, I forgot everything. I just remember it being horrible.

I started this a while ago but I dont know how to feel about it so far and im 60% through. It's just not grabbing my attention. Hoping it gets better!!

A bratty blacksmith is secretly heir to a throne but has to wait for a dude to die before she can rule. Aemyra may not have the skills or demeanor to be queen, but she doesn’t let that get in the way of being super, super haughty and full of herself. She does have a hot brother, so there’s also that. Things go south and she ends up in a tricky situation with her sworn enemy, who she promises to kill several times and then just doesn’t (she’s busy, I guess). (He’s also hot.) (And scarred.) (Both emotionally and physically.) This book was influenced by House of the Dragon but contains minimal uncles marrying their nieces so it’s immediately 250% better than the show. Fights! Flights! Smirking galore! Will Aemyra finally sit on her rightful throne Will Fiorean start trusting the right people? Will the dragons incinerate everyone and rule themselves? IS THERE A HOT, MORALLY GREY DAD? Maybe.

Let me be completely honest. I’m struggling with how to rate this. For 90% of the book, I was gritting my teeth, trying to power through. Why? Because Aemyra. I couldn’t stand her. She was everything I dislike in a character: childish, arrogant, and so full of herself. She acted like she was better than everyone else, constantly belittling everyone around her, acting almighty and edgy while making the dumbest decisions. How do you even root for a character like that? Her entire personality felt forced, and instead of coming across as powerful or compelling, she was just insufferable.
That’s how she views other women while she, too, was in their position. Really? Absolute bitch energy. Absolute queen of the pick-me brigade. Sorry, but if you’re going to write a fiery, rage-fueled FMC, at least make her empowering. Women supporting women is a thing, and I can’t root for a character who thinks like this. Girl power above all, biss!
And Fiorean? He had no personality at all. Zero depth. The chemistry between them? Off. Just off.
On top of that, Aemyra’s character was so inconsistent. She’s all rage and edge at the start, but when she “finds out” What does she do? Nothing. She doesn’t rebel, doesn’t fight back with everything she’s got. She just sits there, bitching about how much she hates all of them and talking about killing them if her magic comes back. With all her fiery attitude, I thought she’d at least try to gouge his eyes out or something. But nope. What happened to all the rage and fiery energy from the beginning? It just didn’t add up.
This book was so hard to get through. The fast pacing and constant name-dropping with no backstory made it impossible to follow or care about what was happening. I love complex fantasy and detailed world-building, but this wasn’t it. Instead of immersing me in the story, it left me feeling lost and frustrated. My brain wouldn’t even let me process the story because of the wreck that was Aemyra’s character. Her chaotic personality overshadowed everything, making it impossible to care about the plot or the world around her.
Oh, and the spice? Nope. No chemistry, nothing special. Just awkward.
To top it off, the dialogue had me cringing:
I shuddered with disgust.
I didn’t give this 1 star because the dragon fights and the ending were "okay". I kind of guessed the ending but not entirely, so it was slightly redeeming. I initially thought about giving this 3 stars, but nah. After enduring 90% of this book, I can’t justify it.
I know some people will probably love this book, but it’s just not for me.

i don’t really know what to say about this book! i liked it at times and then i didn’t and just have mixed feelings overall! the beginning was filled with so much world building that i feel like could’ve been explained better, i found it so confusing!! after reading more it started making more sense but it still wasn’t quite enjoyable at the start!
i don’t know what to think of the fmc; i feel like the book made her out to be this strong and powerful fmc which at times she was but i feel like she barely accomplished anything if that makes sense? all her plans kept going to shit and i was just asking myself when something would change! i kept rooting for her to succeed and sadly it never happened :(
i wish we got more or fiorean, his character was okay and a bit bland but there was literally nothing more…
now my favorite thing about this book would definitely be the enemies to lovers! i think it was done well and i enjoyed the tension/hate between them!
i also wish there was more dragons!! i absolutely loved the authors take on bonds and would’ve loved to see more of it.
the ending i saw coming because sadly i saw a review with a slight spoiler hinting at it and i honestly would’ve been completely oblivious had i not seen that! THAT BEING SAID… (i think) i will be continuing this series!

This was such a disappointing read. I tried rlly hard to like it as well. The fantasy aspect was very flimsy and the chemistry between the main characters was nonexistent.
There was one point in the book where it caught my attention (I think it was about at the halfway mark) and I thought okay we’re finally getting somewhere but then it lost me even faster lol 😭
The fmc irritated me and the mmc was blander than plain bread. There was nothing new or exciting about them.
The cast of characters were so 1 dimensional I could not find it me to give a single care about any of them and the plot was sleep inducing (no actually I fell asleep for a good 7 hrs)
Overall, it had a lot of potential but fell rlly flat.

Oh lordy I did not expect this enemies to lovers to enemies trope OKAY!!!! 😭🔥 For me, it always throws me off when fantasy books take inspiration or direct translations from Scottish Gaelic, so I think that's why it slightly affected my rating overall. BUT DON'T LET THIS DISCOURAGE YOU OKAY?! 😅 Because the plot and the vibes were GIVINGGGGG 😮💨🔥
I was in the mood to have me screaming at the pages, and I got exactly that. Some people would say that experience makes it a low-rating book, but honestly, when I get frustrated with how the characters act in their surroundings (cause duh we all know is on purposes) that’s what I call a good time 😂 (should I.. fix that? eh, let's not think about that right now lmao)
I totally got frustrated with Aemyra 😵💫 because like... SHE WAS BORN TO RULE, but was raised as a low commoner and forger of her town, so she was "taught" to make royal decisions... but MAN SHE DUMB DUMB LMAOOOO 🤣 I was literally screaming at her throughout the book. 😂
Another aspect I LOVED about this book was the society/world-building being centered around a matriarchy. LIKE YESSSSS 👏 WHO RUNS THE WORLD??? WOMEN. PERIOD. 💅👑
Anyway, I GOT HOOKED around 40% which is why my rating is technically 3.5⭐ rounding up because even though it took me a while and me side eyeing Aemyra's choices, I definitely wanted to keep going. AND as soon as Prince Fiorean came into the picture, OHHH LORDDD 😮💨🔥 it was delicious. The chemistry??? THE ANGST???? 🤌 SPOT ON.
As a reader and it being 3rd person POV, you definitely get a higher understanding of what’s happening before the characters do, so it gave me major Game of Thrones vibes 👀 ANDDDD it has dragons 🐉 sooooo you already know it’s giving. Like Aemyra’s over here like “I’m meant to rule” and the kingdom basically said “yea you thought.” 💀😂
⚠️ Warning this book has a CLIFFHANGER that will HURT YOUR SOUL 💔 but thankfully it's just a duology (for now LOL we can never be sure) so hopefully the wait isn't too long. Manifesting fast releases 🙏

⭐️⭐️⭐️ A promising spark that hasn’t yet become a flame
Going into this book, I was buzzing with anticipation. The premise promised a searing blend of magic, power, rebellion, and irresistible tension between enemies. A fire-wielding blacksmith vying for the throne of a fractured realm? Sign me up. And while there were flickers of brilliance that kept me turning the pages, the execution didn’t fully match the epic feel I was hoping for.

i wanted to like this more than i did, but the writing really wasn’t working for me. there’s a big emphasis on Scottish Gaelic and it made everything in the book so confusing to follow. it has a lot of things that i like: a strong and powerful fmc, TRUE enemies to lovers, dragons, etc and i did like those elements in here but it still wasn’t enough. Aemyra was angry and willing to fight tooth and nail for her crown and her people, while Fiorean does everything in his power to stop her.
“But from the very first moment in the forge, when you blazed through my glacial pretenses, I knew I never wanted to be free of it. Of you. Because the intensity in which you burned simmered through my soul and left me forever changed. For weeks, thoughts of you have suffocated me, like the cloying smoke of an inferno I will never escape.”
i actually loved the romance, there’s an incredible push and pull between Aemyra and Fiorean. they skirt the line between love and hate in the best way tbh. if this focused mainly on the romance, I probably would’ve enjoyed it more. the world building was all over the place, there was so much happening but in a way that felt chaotic. it also gets very dark towards the end, the women aren’t treated well and Aemyra herself goes through something very traumatic. i love dragons, so all those scenes along with the romance were my favorite. despite all my issues, the end left on a cliffhanger that i wasn’t expecting and now my curiosity is piqued again.

I am 100% sure this will become a phenomenon as soon as it is officially published, booktok will eat this up instantly.
This book was SO GOOD. It is high fantasy, which I love, and has a very rich world building that is not so complicated as to be a bother, you might have some problems in the beginning due to the amount of different words but just go with it and you will understand everything eventually. Some of it was a little overboard in my opinion, like the use of words like caisteal and breithday instead of the normal English words, but since it is done in moderation it was fine.
One of the things I would like to point out is how much I enjoyed the family dynamics, I feel like they are sometimes overlooked in romantasy because the focus is the romantic relationships, but I loved her family with all their little quirks, and don't even get me started in the twins. I want the next book asap just to see more of Aemyra and Adarian's relationship, I love them so much.
But it is a romantasy, and it deserves the name, the way the enemies to lovers is developed and you can feel the little changes in their perspectives are delicious to read. There are some dialogues between them that were absolutely fantastic, I wish I could post many lines here because they are that good.
I also like the conflict. It's so common to have enemy nations or civil war that I find it really cool to have also a religious plot going on, even if it drove me mad and I just wish Aemyra could burn them all to the ground. While in this topic, I recommend checking trigger warning, the book starts with a list(very wise decision), because there is a scene towards the ending that is quite heavy.
I saw it compared to Fourth Wing and Sarah J. Maas and while I agree in some aspects I also think you might like it even if you don't enjoy those books.

MADRE MÍA, yo esto no me lo esperaba así...¿un romantasy con vibes a Juego de tronos? Ya entraba con mis dudas, pero me ha dado en toda la cara.
La primera mitad del libro es muy política, entra de lleno con un golpe de estado por la verdadera heredera escondida, intentado devolverle al pueblo el matriarcado seguro que tenía antes de la catástrofe y la imposición de la religión. Las tácticas, la exploración del mundo, la compleja terminología y el repaso histórico se hizo algo denso, pero interesante.
Ya en la segunda mitad hay un potente cambio, y aunque seguimos con el conflicto por el trono, el ambiente cambia y hay mayor hincapié en los personajes... Y EN LOS DRAGONES.
Estaba volviéndome LO-CA. De repente sirvió todo: política, debate, feminismo (las mujeres están muy reprimidas y la protagonista no para de lanzar mensajes reivindicadores), dagas, spice, dramas contesanos, la prota siendo una bi icon!! Me costó un día leer 3o páginas del inicio para el siguiente ventilarme 500 del tirón.
Estoy enamoradísima, de verdad. No puedo más que pensar en que el último fallo que tiene es que LA CONTINUACIÓN NO ESTÁ AÚN PUBLICADA. Y ese final... tremendo.

I absolutely devoured this book...Hazel McBride transports us into a world of dragons and scheming rivals from within a ruling clan. I was pulled in immediately by the lush world building rooted in Celtic mythology--it felt really fresh and different from what I've read lately.
But when the marriage of convenience got going, oh boy...*fans self*. The plot was twisty and completely action-packed, making it impossible to predict and very difficult to put down.
I absolutely loved it, and eagerly await the follow up!

Ive settled on a 3⭐️ rating.
As a fantasy book this was amazing, the matriarchal world slowly being overturned by a new patriarchal religion, the dragons, the magic system, all of it was intriguing and gripping.
This story follows Aemyra who is a princess in hiding, when the king dies she rises up to take her rightful place as Queen since this world believes in the Goddesses and being ruled by a woman.
However the previous king only had sons and was married to a woman who believed in the new patriarchal religion so of course Aemyra faces hardship trying to claim the throne.
Parts of this story really reminded me of the politics of Game of Thrones, as if Sansa was the rightful heir but had to fight Joffrey for it.
I loved the court politics and elemental magic and out FMC Aemyra was easy to root for because she was fierce and wanted to do right by her people.
Unfortunately for me the romance let this story down, I hate Fieorian whatever his name is, everytime he was on page I was rolling my eyes, he was pathetic and had no backbone, I understand he has a lot of growth to go through but surely the idea is to at least make me like him. It was borderline a bully romance.
The first 200 pages solidified him as a villain to me so when the romance started to happen I couldn’t root for it, in my eyes he is irredeemable.
Slight spoilers:
He kicked Aemyra to her knees to bow to his brother, he allowed his brother to damn near strip her naked, he then proceeded to allow his brother to walk in and see her naked.
They mmc & fmc are also distantly related, with the same red hair that runs in the royal bloodline.
He gave me the ick and I wasn’t able to shake it, so when the ending happened I wasn’t even shocked because I expected nothing else.
Unfortunately I won’t be continuing the series because I don’t want them together, lowkey wish it was a love triangle so I could root for the other guy.
But 5 stars for the dragons as always!

A WORK OF ART.
A new all time fave. It’s giving game of thrones/house of dragon and it SERVED.
Hazel has created a beautiful masterpiece from her detailed world building, to the tension filled romance with the highest of high stakes and a female character that’s an absolute power house. This book has it ALL.
I felt so invested in the characters and the plot and hoping beyond hope that the good guys won, while screaming at certain characters at the same time.
I’ve never wanted to luxuriously take my time and indulge in a book more while equally wanting to binge it in one sitting too.
Wow, wow, wow.

I don’t even know where to start. Maybe with the fantastic world-building, the sizzling relationship, or perhaps the badass female main character? Seriously, everything about this book was amazing.
Let me begin with the relationship. This book is a rare gem in the enemies-to-lovers genre because it actually features true enemies. I’m talking about holding a knife to each other's throats and promising to kill one another. The progression from enemies to lovers was phenomenal; it felt natural and wasn’t abrupt. There was no insta-lust or insta-love, which was incredibly refreshing.
The female main character, Aemyra, is the definition of a badass. She’s aware she is the rightful queen and makes sure everyone knows it—#Goals! I loved her quick-witted comebacks… they had me laughing out loud. On the flip side, her vulnerability also stood out. Aemyra was raw in a way that I wish more main characters could be.
And then there’s the male main character, Fiorean. Wow. I went through all the emotional stages while reading about him. I hated him, then I liked him, then I hated him again, only to sort of love him (after that ending, I can’t be too sure). I swear, this book gave me whiplash! He was amazing, and I loved how he treated Aemyra. He wasn’t overly possessive; instead, he genuinely cared for her and wanted her to be herself. He embodies the idea “I wouldn’t burn the world down for you; I’d hand you the matches.”
That cliffhanger was brutal… I refuse to accept that I have to wait 1-2 years before I get to read the next book.

OH- and just an FYI, one of my only issues with this book was the names. I’m willing to admit that I’m bad with names, but this was just confusing and there was a name for the most random stuff. For lovers of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon— and for those who hold a special place in their heart for Aelin Galathynius— this one’s for you.
I knew from the moment I read the dedication this was going to be a 5 star read for me. I was correct.
Once I got through the initial world building, I was absolutely captivated. The themes at play in conjunction with the magic, politics, familial structures and social hierarchies had me in a constant emotional state. Just absolutely raging against the patriarchy. Burn it to the f*cking ground.
The battle between the sexes here in conjunction with the sexual tension between Aemyra and Fiorean was all too real. (Being attracted to men is truly so tragic.) I could feel Aemyra’s internal struggles and see how they manifested into the story. The push and pull between wanting to be both assertive and benevolent. As a bisexual woman myself, I relate heavily. I loved watching Aemyras character arch and am eager to see where it goes.
I also just absolutely loved the way that magic and dragons played into the narrative itself. The end had me in an absolute chokehold— I can’t wait to see where the story goes in the sequel in terms of both the plot and the themes. One of the best books I’ve read this year.
TW: Sexual assault. This did take me longer to read than anticipated due to depictions of SA. Be mindful if that’s also an area of struggle for you.

the fast burn enemies to oops you forced me to marry you let’s bone gave me whiplash. I needed more buildup and tension. I needed to be convinced!!!! and I fully was not.
This book is clearly well researched. The world building and pacing were well done. I loved the matriarchal society being oppressed by a theocratic misogynistic regime. The feminine rage and burn it all down vibes were immaculate.
However, I just could not get down with Aemrya.

I expected a romance-heavy book with some dragon lore, but I got SO much more. This book exceeded every expectation I had.
I was impressed by the political structure and court intrigue of this book. There was a moment where I had to check and make sure this was a fantasy romance, because there is so much political intrigue in the first half that I didn't even notice the slowly blooming romance. And I mean that in the best way.
My interest in this book was almost entirely driven by the plot. The romance was a secondary (but delightful) element. I felt that the transition from enemies to lovers happened a little quickly despite the romance being a rather slow burn, but by the end I understood why things happened the way they did.
The dragon magic and lore was really interesting and I loved that the bond was slightly different from other dragon-bond books. I do hope to get more in the next book!
If you like court politics, feminism, progressive religious views, true smiles to lovers, dragon bonds, and knife play - you will eat this up!

I hate dnf-ing arcs but I’m not enjoying this book at all. I found the fmc so annoying and bratty. I could not stand her at all. There’s nothing redeemable about her. Like she was so ready to be a queen but can’t fight when she has years of training. The mmc which we don’t get to him fully till 50% of the book, I still found him so bland.
Also since her father is related to someone in the royal family wouldn’t that make the fmc and mmc related. Probably some distant relation but I still can’t get pass it.
There was no point in this book that I found entertaining and attention capturing. I just found myself not caring about anything at all.

Disappointing and put me into a reading slump.
The beginning was rough, lots of info dumping and an excessive amount of Scottish Gaelic. Inconsistent pacing and unlikeable main character which made it hard for me to immerse myself in the story. I would say romance doesn’t start until after 50% and it was underwhelming and lacking development. I also found the plot predictable.
It has potential but needs better character work and execution. Unfortunately I won't be continuing the series but wish Hazel all the best as an author.

* This book gave me house of dragon vibes. This book is one where I’ve read the most about dragons being involved. The author does not sugar coat it and make everything perfect. This book had a point in it that was just honestly so sad. I appreciated the author for adding that part in as a reader we then feel and see the fuel for her internal feminist rage ignite and it is so called for.
* Holy shit. Hoooooooooly shit this debut was AMAZING! Omg when is the second book coming out? That cliffhanger. WTF. WTF. WTF. Omg I feel personally betrayed by this book.

This book was a slow start in the beginning but immediately picked up. I started to connect with the character more as I read FMC is very inspiring and also strong and loves equity and one of my favourite quotes of hers is “Part of my plan involves ensuring that every woman, migrant or magical or otherwise, has the right to choose what happens to her body. Has a say in who she marries.” 💜 she is forced into marriage with Prince Fiorean the relationship is not a strong one in the beginning but they eventually grow close with some steamy scenes 🔥 the dragons in this book are written very well and are also my favourites in this book. FMC bonds with a rare female dragon which makes others jealous but also makes her bond rare I adore their connection. There was a few characters I was sus on throughout this book and 1 of them I was right about at the end the other I did not expect at all but I’m also not that surprised either. This book ends in a cliffhangers with multiple betrayals I feel so sorry for both MMC & FMC but poor FMC copes it the most it makes me scared of what book 2 will bring it could be either be a catastrophe or could be a happy ending have to wait and see I guess

I want to start by emphasizing that you should take this review with a grain of salt. I've recently been disillusioned with the romantasy genre. I feel like I've read too many versions of the same story/characters, and 'A Fate Forged in Fire' doesn't bring anything fresh to the narrative. I know that there are people who love to read the same ‘enemies to lovers’ story with different characters, but unfortunately I am not.
All that said, I believe this book has a lot going for it. The world-building and politics were captivating, the plot was intriguing, and the writing was decent. I particularly liked the fact that the main character was bisexual (or I assume, bisexual).
Even though I liked some aspects of the main character, overall I found her incredibly annoying. This is one of the main drawbacks for me when reading.
I know that this book will be very popular among the Romantasy readers and I do recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the genre, but for me personally, I felt like it didn’t offer anything new.

From the first sentence, yes I literally mean the first sentence, until the last, I was hooked and entranced in the world that Hazel McBride built and let flow. The stubbornness and pride that elevated Aemyra’s character made her stand out to me in a competition of FMCs, and is currently high on my list. She not only takes no crap from anyone, but she is also unapologetically herself. The world building was captivating, though confusing at times, and left you in a breathtaking world of dragons, magic, and unyielding politics. In terms of character development, we saw a lot of just Aemyra and I wished that other characters had more of a chance to be fleshed out. We were only getting this surface level feel to them and I know there is much more to be explored. The themes relating to the political climate had me wanting to hurl my kindle to the floor multiple times. You could feel the struggles through the pages and give way to the tension that pushed this story forward. I am anxious to see how the rest of this story unfolds after the ending.
