London Mister #1

Taming Mr. Walker

Rate this book
Danny Walker, my big brother’s arrogant, powerful, handsome, and completely unobtainable best friend.

He’s a ruthless tech tycoon, and I take calls from angry clients who can’t reset their passwords.

He lives in a Grade II listed mansion with holiday homes worldwide, and I rent a room in a flat-share with my best friend and mice.

Our worlds couldn’t be further apart.

Falling for him is not an option.

Eight years ago, I made the mistake of flirting with him only to be rejected…hard.

To this day, he won’t acknowledge me as anything more than his best friend’s silly little sister. Which is fine because I can’t stand to be around that emotionless CEO.

Regardless of him being the hottest man I’ve ever met.

Now I find out he’s bought the company I work for, making him my boss’s boss’s boss.

And he wants to get rid of me.

Danny Walker is not a man to be messed with.

But perhaps there’s more behind his cold, detached stares than I thought.

Stone-faced ruthless CEOs don’t fall for scatty girls like me. Or do they?

This is one of those books I can see myself re-reading over and over again and then upgrading. In fact, I should probably do it now…

I really enjoyed Danny and Charlie’s story. They had amazing tension and chemistry and I just loved every second of it. If you love a forbidden style brother’s best friend romance with a twist and a delicious age gap, this one is for you.

If I could give negative stars, I would…I really really would.

We have Danny, the “hero” who in the first 30% of the book has sex with two other women, and talks about getting hard staring at a waitress. We are constantly shown a parade of women rubbing against him and flirting, and he does absolutely nothing to discourage it. Then the first time he has sex with the heroine, he asks if she’s on the pill so he can skip wearing a condom…keep in mind, he was with TWO OTHER WOMEN within 2-3 weeks of this. This man must be CRAWLING with STIs…just crawling. He has absolutely no redeeming qualities, no depth, nothing. At 41 years old I just can’t believe he does nothing but think about sex with women and apparently gets hard instantly. He needs to see a doctor.

Then we have the heroine. 28 years old with the brain of a 17 year old. No self respect, no spine, likely has a drinking problem given how often she’s drunk in this book, and truly just takes whatever scraps Danny throws at her. I’m embarrassed for her. And there is a sex scene with OM early on and its just really cringey (milkmaid handjob? Fucks sake, its so bad).

The plot was just as shitty. Both were with other people when they started being physical. No good secondary characters, absolutely ridiculous plot tangents (she sings and writes her own music and towards the end her song is used as the main song in a James Bond movie….hahahaha…ok. As if every Bond song hasn’t been by a huge superstar of their time). There is nothing but sex, most of it a rinse/repeat of aggressive fingering, hard screwing, and lots of mentions of him filling her up. Ok then.

So bad. So so so bad. Can’t believe I read this drivel.

This wasn’t enemies to lovers, it was lovers to lactose intolerant 💀

But seriously, why was the FMC so gassy??? Like every other chapter I was holding my breath. AND I DONT NEED TO KNOW THE DETAILS OF DIFFERENT FARTS!

It had the setup of everything I usually love, but every time Danny Walker growled, all I could hear was that Spongebob audio: “It growled at me 😭.” I couldn’t take him seriously.

The dialogue sometimes gave me secondhand embarrassment, like I wanted to look away and pretend I didn’t see it. The last 25%? Yeah, it lost me. It got a little too dramatic in a way that didn’t land for me.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Pre read: Brother’s best friend, workplace romance, age gap AND he’s rich??? I’m sat. I opened the ARC so fast I think I pulled a muscle.

Holy shit this was GOOOOOOD!!! I'm bummed this author only has 2 books out at the moment but so glad to have found such a brilliant and funny author!

I don't even know how to review this book so I'm just gonna list all the things that I love.

- Age gap
- Brothers best friend trope which I fucking LOVE
- Enemies to lovers which I also LOVE
- Asshole, brooding, sometimes mean H
- Funny, like laugh out loud funny h who is quirky without being annoying
- Have I mentioned that this book was actually funny? I laughed so much reading it and had a permanent smile on my face the whole time
- The sexual tension was OFF THE CHARTS. Sometimes I would go back and read a sentence or paragraph just to experience the toe curling, face flaming tension a 2nd time
- The sex was *chefs kiss*
- Set in London and because this was written by a British author she obviously didn't fuck up the places, slang and it just had that British humour which is close to Australian in that it's kinda self depreciating and dry which I love (I also love you Americans too but British/Australian humour hits different)

I don't think I missed anything but I already want to read this book again. Danny Walker is right up there on my book boyfriends shelf.

DNF

I'm sorry but have we all read the same book?

This was dreadful.

With the heroine who is 29 but has a mentality of a middle school idiot and a drinking problem, the hero who'll fuck everything that moves and whose life revolves around chasing skirts, the OW scenes, the lack of maturity, the idiotic friends, the shitty plot and mediocre writing?

Well...

All I want to do is bleach my eyes, erase my memory and pretend this shitty book never happened.

I tried. I really did! I made it so far but couldn't go on. The h was kind of obnoxious tbh. The H was alright but kind of flat. It took the h acting super immature and jealous about the H and potential other women that broke the camels back with me. I was rolling my eyes and it was just too off-putting. I know I didn't have that much more, but I felt like I was pushing myself to read it -- and with so many books on my tbr list, I didn't think it was worth the time. One of my GR friends loved this -- so it very well could just be a me thing too!

4 stars (maybe)

I certainly was all over the place with this one. I enjoyed the first 40%, especially the h, Charlie. I sometimes struggle with heroines being TSTL or just ridiculous, but Charlie was funny and I liked her.

I’m going with 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Taming Mr. Walker is book 1 in the London Mister series and was unfortunately a miss for me. It had everything I should have loved but Charlie absolutely ruined this book for me. The first half was somewhat enjoyable but the second half I was barely even able to read. Charlie is 28 years old but is one of the most immature characters in a book that I have read. She doesn't brush her hair, puts no effort into her clothing, drinks till she's vomiting everywhere and jumps to conclusions. Her friends were just as bad, and it was so obvious that stupid email would come back to bite her. Danny was yummy and I had no issues with him except he deserved someone more mature. Overall, while this one was not for me, I did enjoy book 2 so I will continue to read this author.

Loved it!

Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Trope: enemies to lovers
Angst: 😱😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Entertaining read with some real laugh out loud moments. I font usually enjoy brother's best friend stories because the reasoning for not telling the brother typically has me eye rolling. Not so in this case - presented in a way that actually made some sense. Chemistry between the 2 MCs was great! Ill definitely be adding Ms. Lucas to my list of go to authors!

The "Barfarama" tag is literal...way too much vomiting. It reminded me of Knives Out where the vomiting is such a presence it should have been listed under Cast of Characters.

That's not the real issue, it's that despite some nice 3-4 star banter and a fresh voice from a fairly likable heroine it gets derailed by the H and h. H is strong, silent type and very, very good at distancing himself except when he want to have sex so little voice from him at all. They reminded me of Sandy and Danny (Grease reference) and their massive Failure to Communicate or get it wrong.

These two!!!!! The H is older and a Master and Commander of the business world and acts like, well, Danny. Hey, his character's name is even Danny! They finally have sex, but he doesn't call her for three days then tells her to grow up when she gets upset. H goes radio silent a lot as h continues to misconstrue actions without clarifying them. The back and forth was exhausting.

If these two had been a little less high school I would have rated higher.

Naaa I’ve just had the best time 😩🤌🏻 I’ve laughed out loud and smiled hard for the last 400 pages!

✅ brothers best friend
✅ billionaire romance
✅ workplace romance
✅ age gap - she’s 29 he’s 41
✅ Scottish MMC 🔥

Stories set in the UK usually make me cringe and want to yeet my kindle across the room 👀 it’s either written by non-uk authors who can’t get our banter/slang right or it’s boring and stagnant. This passed the vibe check 👏🏻

AND IT WAS HIIILLLaaarious 😆 The inner monologue and dialogue had me roaring. Not to mention how relatable and witty the banter was ugh SO GOOD!!!! The story and writing pulled me in straight away, snappy, quick, no complaints from me there.

The only thing I didn’t like was how the conflict is essentially misscommunication 🤣 they didn’t have a proper conversation, made tons of assumptions and allowed it to drive a wedge between them. Incredibly realistic but also very annoying.

BEST believe I am going straight into the next book xoxoxo

I just finished reading this and i already want to go back and read it all over again. I really loved reading this. I’ve been a reading slump for a couple of months now so imagine my surprise when I started and finished this in one sitting.

I loved the story, the setting and the characters. I found myself laughing with these characters one and crying the next. I don’t think anything third-act breakup has wrecked in quite a while like this one did and I’m still reeling from it even though it ended in a HEA.

Charlie and Danny were such amazing characters with such sizzling chemistry and I was rooting for them at every turn—yep my brother’s best friend hating heart really was — shocking!!

Overall I love this book. Only reason I’m not giving it a 5 star is because Charlie’s insistence of over sharing with a flat mates about Danny and her private shenanigans grated on my nerves.

I mean wow y’all…! This one was a mess.
If you want my short review, here it is: don’t waste your time, even if the tiktok recommendation sounds enticing.

If you want to read a longer review, here goes nothing! (Also spoilers but I don’t think any of my friends would read this so I’m not marking as spoilers)

First, I want to start by saying I hope the author never sees this review. I’m sure she’s a great person and might be a decent author in her other books, but this one was bad.
When I hit the 50% mark I started keeping a note on all of the things I dislike about the book and forced myself to finish it just so I could rate it and explain what was wrong with it. I will begin with point number one
1. Both main characters suck. Truly not very many redeeming qualities at all about either.
- MMC: Danny (not an awesome name to start) wasn’t that hot, rude, couldn’t communicate, acted like a 40 year old man child. Wants a woman younger than him to act his age and not be so immature. Okay dude then go date someone your age. But at the same time, age gap wasn’t even that crazy???? Like maybe I’m crazy but 41 and 30 is really not that strange?? But they made it such a big deal?? Once again, could not communicate. The second something is miscommunicated he just starts insulting the FMC. Went from 0-100 and not even in a fun way. Build up was stupid and annoying.
- FMC: Charlie. Okay be serious. She’s annoying, couldn’t communicate, every other sentence out of her mouth felt like it was about pooping or farting. Girl… you’re 30 not an 18 year old??? And even then 18 year olds are probably more mature than you. She cried because of everything. Misunderstood every chapter. Assumed the worst without giving anyone any time to explain literally anything. She was literally a 30 year old baby trying to make a 41 year old baby fall in love with her.
2. Build up/ enemies to lovers: ummmm sorry 20% is certainly not enough time for hate before we jump into love. I’m not saying they fell in love 20% in but they started going at it like bunny rabbits at the 20-30% mark for literally no reason??? Like that’s almost quicker than a normal rom/com even with instalove????? There was no solid build up. I mean I guess they had history prior considering it was best friends brother and they’d know each other like 20 years but like booooring!!!!!!!!!
3.unnecessary comments: once again, this FMC/ Charlie made the stupidest most immature poop and fart jokes as often as she could. I saw ladies reviewing this book saying it made them laugh out loud. I know they were laughing at these jokes. Because they rated this book 5. I don’t trust them and I’m sorry that feels hateful but I don’t know what other things they could be laughing at in this book and still give it a 5. Also, this chick vomits like 4 times in this book????? Girl???? maybe stop drinking to the point you get sick everytime you go out???? Or get that checked out??? Like let’s goooooo realistic representation because I get sick too but we don’t need to talk about it every couple chapters. Also you’re 30 and should be able to control your vomit??? She threw up all over some blind dates fancy bathroom at their house and then just left???? Like literally snuck out??? I know that’s embarrassing but again you’re 30, grow up. But then the vomit debacle never came up again…. Sorry what?????
4.Toxic: this book/ relationship to my knowledge was not categorized as a dark romance. Maybe taboo? But not a dark romance. SO WHY WAS THIS RELATIONSHIP MORE TOXIC THAN SOME OF THE OTHER BOOKS IVE READ!!!!! IVE LITERALLY READ ABOUT KIDNAPPER X KIDNAPPE(??) RELATIONSHIPS THAT ARE LESS TOXIC AND ANNOYING THAN THIS!!!!!!! You could not convince me for even one single second that they were in love/ a good match. Actually immediately I take that back. They are perfect for each other because they are both literal adult babies?????
5.side characters: sometimes in books like these you can kind of find solace/ comfort/ some amount of likeness in the side characters. Not here <3 didn’t care about a single one of them and they were all annoying as well. Maybe I didn’t get their jokes but I just wanted them to shut up. Like they all just made the situations worse. Not one adult in this story had a single functioning brain cell in this book. The only character I cared about was her stupid taxidermy mouse with a hat!!!!!!! And even that didn’t make sense!!!!! Why was she weird!!!! I get quirky girl representation but there’s a limit to that and this girl was just strange???? But I was supposed to believe that literally EVERY male that came in contact with her wanted her????? I’m not saying hot girls can’t have personality but what was going on????
7.hanky panky…. I mean this sucked to. If you’re gonna include some spice in your book make it worth reading yanno. But also dude just because you have oodles of money and a private jet and own all these companies DOESN’T MEAN YOU CAN GET DOWN WHENEVER SND WHEREVER YOU WSNT TO GET DOWN!!!!! LIKE HAVE SOKE DECORUM- YOU CAN NOT SERIOUSLY wANT MR MOUSE TAXIDERMY THAT BADLY YOU LITERALLY SAID SHE WAS A CHILD WHO DIDNT KNOW HOW TO BRUSH HER HAIR LIKE 2 CHAPTERS AGO BUT NOW YOU CANT GET OFF OF HER FOR LIKE LITERALLY 2 SECONDS??????
6.ending: I didn’t think the ending would make me so mad but it did. So they are officially together and earlier in the book it says office relationships are permitted but then when they finally “fall in love” they are still acting like they aren’t????? Literally for what reason?????? AND THEN SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!! THE LAST LIKE PAGE AND A HALF SHE TELLS HIM SHES PREGNANT!!!!! GOOD GAAAWWD WE ARE IN TROUBLE IF YALL ARE THE PARENTS!!!! 8 MONTHS AGO YALL WERE CALLING EACH OTHER NAMES ACTING LIKE BABIES YOURSELF AND NOW IM MEANT TO BELIEVE THAT YOURE GOING TO BE ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF AN ACTUAL BABY????

Anyway. This book was a disaster. I am sorry this is probably so hateful and I really mean no disrespect to the author. I’m sure she’s a great person, and if she’s not….we’ll…. Good luck Charlie! (That’s funny and clever because that’s the FMC’s name 🙏

I enjoyed this book enough to read it in one day. The storyline was great, the characters were relatable and funny. I loved Charlie's stubbornness and defiance. Too often in these books the man has all the control so it was really refreshing to see her keep Danny on his toes!
I loved the buildup between the two of them, however I did feel that the romantic side of things was a little rushed and heavily reliant on their physical chemistry. A lot of the opportunities to build the actual relationship were glossed over and time lapsed. I love spice in books, but there needs to be depth there too, little things that build the whole so you're invested in them as a couple and not just the down and dirty.
Overall though, it was a great read. Bonus points for Danny being Scottish!

I cannot believe BookTok failed me again. When I'm reading a fictional book, I don't expect the characters to fart. They're fictional. Not to mention the cringey ass dialogues gave me second hand embarrassment. I deserve better than this so I'm packing my bags and leaving.

I enjoyed this until the last 20% at which point everything went a bit shit tbh.

I love a secret workplace romance and the whole dating your boss on the QT is a favourite of mine. That was really well done in this, the workplace and their colleagues all felt authentic.

What wasn’t authentic was the conflict towards the end.

I really enjoyed this one. Charlie The fmc has had a crush on Danny her brothers bff since she was a young child. She made a pass at him when she was 20 and he was 30 something. He rejected her mainly because her brother Tristan had warned him off messing with his sister. About ten years later billionaire Danny is set to take over The company Charlie is working for. He’s got women chasing after him and is somewhat a manwhore. He wants Charlie to quit so he’s not tempted by her. His plan fails and the story heats up segue to some angst then the hea.

Surprisingly very good. But I had a feeling like something was missing. Something for it to be really really good. But I needed something like this to get me out of slump. Something to chill my brain. And it delivered. Nothing new to read about, but sometimes that's what's needed. Sometimes typical billionaire romance story is what you need.

And the scene when he's in her bedroom for the first time... Yeah, that.

Meh

This book had everything I wanted but didn’t deliver it well

I disliked charlie so much she is the worst female character I’ve ever read the way she acts made me MAD, she doesn’t brush her hair nor cares about the way she dresses, she’s alcoholic and always throw up everywhere, she left her perfect date a handsome millionaire doctor who owns a home that looks like a palace and he worshiped the ground that she walks in, but what did she do? She vomited all over his bathroom and ran haha silly her, she always jumps to conclusions without understanding, so dramatic for nothing and she is 28
Danny deserves better

her writing is not the best she wrote many disgusting&embarrassing things, I buried my face into the pillow hundred times

And what do you mean the perfect Danny Walker who cleans his shit with dollars cuz he doesn’t know what to do with all his money wears a t shirt with holes in it …

I LOVE BEING SURPRISED!! What a fantastic story!
I’m always constantly searching for stories with the right amount of tension , love and steam. THIS BOOK HIT IT! The tension was like a rubber band and I was eating every single page up as fast as I could.
And to make it even better..? I literally was laughing out loud most of the way through !! The best British banter + sense of humour, my husband was looking at me like I lost my mind. Brilliant!
The only thing I’ll say is Danny confused me with his behaviour towards the end after the big debacle and I couldn’t understand why he just stopped contacting her . BUT trust me it’s still worth the read.
Absolutely loved it! Looking forward to more books by this author!

Overall a good read. Could have done with less immaturity on the part of the 28-almost-29-year-old h. It seemed like she was constantly LOOKING for a reason to accuse him of being with another woman and then jump to the worst conclusion about it without even having a convo with him. FFS... just calm your tits and grow up a smidge. One "celebrity rag" TMZ-style photo (we all know how 100% absolutely true those are) of him with a blonde and she's sobbing her eyes out, imagining the worst, and hanging him out to dry. Too many of those type of contrived scenarios kept this from being a 5 star for me.
