This is an absolutely laugh-out-loud, entertaining, and eccentric paranormal romance between a quirky, selfless, artsy heroine and a cinnamon bun immortal with dreamy Mr. Darcy vibes.

"How to be a Roommate with a Vampire and Teach Him How to Adapt in the Modern World" sounds like a hilarious and creative sitcom concept that I would happily binge-watch for seasons.

The main concept can be defined as "What We Do in the Shadows" meets "Flatshare."

Both of the main characters are goofy, sweet, and likable. Their palpable chemistry, handwritten notes they share, their irresistible attraction, and the awkward situations they put themselves into are absolutely swoon-worthy.

The main plot revolves around aspiring artist Cassie Greenberg and Frederick Fitzwilliam, an eccentric landlord at the age of 35, who looks like he was transported from the regency era by his looks, manners, and way of talking.

Unfortunately, Cassie is about to get evicted from her flat and is reconsidering her living arrangements after reading a Craigslist post providing a spare room with an unbelievably affordable price located in a good part of the city. As you can guess, the apartment belongs to Frederick, who doesn't get much return for his post. Only Cassie applies for the apartment, ignoring red flags because beggars can't be choosers. At least the young Colin Firth in regency era suits styled man, who also has adorable six-packs, doesn't give her any Dexter meets Dahmer vibes! But she has no idea that the adorable man has Edward Cullen meets Damon Salvatore vibes, indeed.

Cassie can barely resist her attraction to her roommate/landlord, feeling extra pleased by his formal but also genuine old-style letters and his honestly encouraging compliments to her art. But when she learns the truth about why he has unconventional sleeping habits and working schedule, his lack of appetite, and his unusual old-school manners, the first thing she does is run away without looking back!

But what if she can give him a chance and help him adapt to the modern world, even though she cannot hold her feelings for him at risk of her own life?

I think this was an absolutely enjoyable, fresh, and lighthearted debut. I sense from the open ending that more sequels may come out!

Reginald is an absolutely delightful and hilarious supporting character. The text exchanges between him and Frederick were the highlight of my day! I am looking forward to reading more works by the author in the near future.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for sharing this very entertaining book's digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Have not read it yet, but will give this 5 stars nonetheless, because people are fucking horrible - seriously, you're tanking the rating of a debut author (knowing that publishing takes these things into consideration), just because their book is based on a ship you don't like? How fucking immature can you be? Don't like, don't read, simple as that. Not to mention that just scrolling past is free.

Super fun and quick read. Had a great time with it.

✔️ Age gap romance
✔️ Forced proximity
✔️ Roommates to friends to lovers
✔️ Slow burn
✔️ Forbidden romance
✔️ He falls first and harder
✔️ "Who did this to you"

Cassie, is an artist who's finding it difficult to make a living. While she's on the brink of getting evicted, she stumbles upon a "too good to be true" apartment. She suspects there might be something fishy. Her new roommate is anything but normal. Frederick, who claims to work at night and sleep during the day, keeps rooms locked and likes to read regency romance novels. But when Cassie finds bags of blood in the refrigerator, things get wild...

Let me start by saying I had such an awesome time with this book, it was hilarious, romantic and had a paranormal aspect to it. What's not to love? But what made the book stand out was not the romance, it was Frederick. His character carried this book and it was a one man show. I don't believe that anyone who reads this book will disagree with that.

Frederick is obviously a vampire and he has been asleep for a century. Now that he's woken up, he wants to get to know the modern day world. It's his sheer innocence that makes him stand out. He is so interested in learning new things, to watch how he thinks of the world and has to now relearn everything about it. From a task as simple as ordering coffee to how to kiss a girl he is crushing on is so adorable to read. His zeal towards life and Cassie is written well.

Cassie is kinda meh compared to him. Don't get me wrong, she is not annoying or anything but she doesn't stand out. Her passion is clearly art but that's something I failed to connect with. I liked to see her grow into a confident person tho. She is passionate about her art and career, but that's about it to her. She lacks depth.

The romance is slow burn. Tho Cassie was instantly attracted to him and was already thinking of him constantly after their first meet. I had gotten concerned if it was insta lust, thankfully it wasn't. The two share a lot of sweet moments- that towel scene, when she teaches him about the human world, when he comforts her and when he confesses his feelings for her. I didn't like the "Who did this to you" moment, felt like it was thrown in there for the readers and for the sake of it. The spice was okay, I needed more of that.

The reasons why it is not going to be a five star read-
Oddly when I think about all these moments, all I remember is what HE did for her, not a single moment when she did anything for him🤔 She never confessed her feelings for him. It was always Frederick who talked about how much he wanted her around, how much he liked her and enjoyed her company. Whereas, Cassie was always "okay but why" and she just agrees and mumbles a few words in response but not a single time where she said to him "I love you" or something even remotely close to it.

Another thing that irked me was the fact that Cassie never encouraged Frederick to be authentic to himself. We see Frederick constantly motivating her to follow her dreams, be her true self but Cassie took all of that away from him, while teaching him vital lessons she let Frederick believe he has to change everything about his core values and mold into something that is acceptable to the world and her. I found that trait of hers very unlikable.

Apart from that, I enjoyed Frederick and his passion for Cassie a lot. He was so open about it. I picked up on a lot of similarities from Twilight, idk if it's true or not but Frederick's character is very similar to Edward. They both have similar thoughts of being damned for eternity, the way they see their better half was another striking similarity. The way like Bella had to go to Edward in New Moon, Cassie had to do something similar. Then comes Cassie's mentions of loving Frederick "irrevocably." Cmon that's so Twilight 👀🤭

Overall, I do believe that the rating is fair. I do recommend it to people who enjoy an occasional paranormal romance with nothing too heavy and are looking for something romcom sort.... Also, if you like Twilight 👀 It might even make it to my top 10 reads for the year and all cause of Frederick 😉

✨…Bite me✨

Oof I had really high hopes for this one but it was so hard to finish. It took me over two weeks and I had to force myself to pick it back up. There was little depth to the writing, but it also wasn’t fun or fluffy either.

The dynamic between Frederick and Cassie felt incredibly simpy. He was just so obsessed and she was like “👉👈🥺 …but why?” (I was also asking “…but why?” because I really wasn’t a fan.) In his eyes, she could do no wrong and she was on a major pedestal. Also she was upset there were no pans in the apartment after she moved in and I’m like girl??? You really didn’t have any pans?? Pot meet kettle. I dunno I just really didn’t feel it.

There was no chemistry and the infatuation was so instantaneous that I felt nothing for them as a couple. Despite the insta-love, their relationship “development” took so long and the pacing was really slow. The third act was external and didn’t force them to grow at all. It was really just DRY and boring and induced a massive reading slump.

It also did not feel like a vampire romance?? The vampire stuff felt like an afterthought to try to make the plot seem unique. Vampires don’t automatically add razzle dazzle! You need to also provide the razzle and the dazzle! There wasn’t any lore and you’re kinda just like boom vampires exist which works sometimes…but it didn’t here. I could’ve maybe ignored it for super interesting character development and plot…but there wasn’t any.

I enjoyed Frederick’s fish out of waterness and his Google searches, but I never really got to know him since we didn’t have his POV. I’m actually a fan of single POV, but when the main dude is a vampire with no explanation, you definitely need his inner monologue because without it, it leads to a lot of telling and not showing.

Overall, I had to force myself to finish the book, and even then I couldn’t stay focused for more than a page or two before I needed another break. The premise seemed really fun and I love the cover but the delivery left much to be desired.

⭐️⭐️.5/5 🌶️.75*/5

*The one sex scene was pretty lukewarm on my spice scale and didn’t do much for me. It also took so long for them to bang it out. There was minor bite play but mama wanted more.

Questions: his mom was a vampire but Frederick was randomly turned during the war? Was his mom always a vampire? Did she change him? Was he always going to change? Idk fam maybe I just didn’t focus.

Also I’m so sorry but I really didn’t understand her art. It felt so…performative.

"I've never met anyone who's a hopeless case."
His eyes fluttered closed.
"You have never met anyone like me, Miss Greenberg."

Sexy, funny, sweet and absurdly cute.
It put me in such a euphoric and light mood I can't stop giggling, which I probably stop doing considering it's midnight and my cat is looking at me like I've gone insane, but really, I can't.
It was that cute.

In case that cover wasn't hint enough, My Roommate Is A Vampire is the literal epitome of a feel-good rom-com.
Sure, if you're looking for depth or cleverly crafted backstories, you've stumbled upon the wrong novel; and sure, this was very insta-lovey and kind of related heavily on suspension on reality, but who am I to judge?
So, if you're into swoon-worthy romance, zero unnecessary drama, a relatable FMC in her 30s (YAY!), chef's kiss diary entries, hilarious internet search histories, and an anachronistic slash confirmed bi vampire hottie (who looked a suspicious lot like tom ellis in my mind) with a hidden swiftie side and kermit the frog pj pants, this book's your guy.

Put 1989 tv on repeat and go get a bite (pun totally intended) of this sweet little gem!

(Oh and omg
I'll never be over Frederick's special vamire talent 😆🍍)

I expected this to be a fun read, but I found the story underwhelming.

The characters are quite bland and don't have much personality or chemistry between them. Cassie feels like a person who can't even help herself, let alone someone else. I didn't find her 'I'm-not-like-other-artists' appealing at all. Frederick being a vampire doesn't bring much to the story.

Cassie instantly falls for Frederick, just because he is so handsome and she can't stop drooling over him. He is not impressed the first time they meet, but then he sees her in a towel and, suddenly, he is smitten with everything she does. That's it for the relationship development.

The last 20% ruined the story for me. The whole plot line at the end of the book is just ridiculous.

The writing is ok. I liked the notes they were exchanging, especially Frederick's. But there is lack of consistency and many things remain surface level. Also, Cassie's constant inner monologues disrupted the natural flow of the conversation.

Going into this book, I had high expectations. It sounded delightful and the perfect premise for a paranormal rom-com. But holy hell, what a letdown.
There’s spoilers in this review.

The characters are extremely one dimensional. Cassie is a “artist” that create shitty “art” from junk and can’t pay her bills. Fredrick is a vampire, that’s it. We don’t know what he does when he’s awake, we get to know next to nothing about the vampire mythology.

Everything moves way too fast. Before the 100-page mark, Cassie already know that her roommate is a vampire. Her only clue beforehand was that she wasn’t allowed into some rooms that held absolutely nothing spectacular. Then she comes home to some blood bags and that’s all the buildup. But by then they are already *in love*. Fredrick is all “you are magnificent, you are everything” from the start and Cassie is over the fact that he’s a vampire after a page or two because he complimented her art and bought her a saucepan.

One of the main storylines was that Cassie was supposed to help Fredrick navigate the modern world. But there’s no consistency in this. He can’t understand how to order coffee, but he can understand texting, his friends modern slang and emojis and dirty talk. Fredrick is also supposed to have been in a coma for a century, but is acting like he doesn’t have a understanding of anything that happened after the 19th century. This is a quote:
”When Fredrick fell into his century-long sleep, he’d left behind a world of handwritten letters and horseback riding.”
But a century ago puts us in the 1920s? By then, we have cars, ocean liners, movie production, airplanes, electricity and women can vote. He should also have experienced a world war and have a grander understanding of the development of the modern world.

Like a already mentioned, the vampire mythology is severely underdeveloped. Fredrick’s mom is somehow also a vampire, but we never get to know the story or how a vampire gets turned. It felt like the author tried to add some new aspects to the developed mythology too, but they were so ridiculous. A vampire that enters a home without an invitation explodes and Fredrick conjures fruit out of thin air?????

Cassie is also dumb as a doornail. When Fredrick tells her he can’t enter her friend’s home without being invited and tells her to ask her friend to come down to invite him, Cassie just goes “They’re going to think that’s weird”. Oh, why didn’t he think of that? He should just go right in and ignore the fact that he will explode then. Fredrick also gets kidnapped, but Cassie gets the confirmation that he moved on from some strangers Instagram and does nothing to help at first. She even tells Fredrick after he gets back that “While you were gone, I interview with that school”. He wasn’t “gone”, he was kidnapped and you just went on with your life like you couldn’t be bothered. True love right there.

When she actually takes her thumb out of her ass, she comes up with the brilliant plan that if Fredrick isn’t released, she will post a very cringe video on TikTok and reveal that vampires are real. And the kidnappers just buys that… like anyone would believe her or something that gets put on TikTok. For fuck’s sake.

There’s also a steamy scene where it gets pointed out that Cassie have some previous experience. I don’t understand why that needed to be pointed out. Cassie is in her 30s and living in the US, It’s not exactly unusual for someone that age to have had previous sexual experience. I don’t think it’s anything shameful with choosing to remain a virgin to this age, what I’m reacting towards is that so many authors seem to have an obsession with virginity, where you need to point out that someone is *not* a virgin like it’s something unusual and shameful. Even if the book is a romance book for an adult audience. There’s nothing wrong or shameful in being a virgin. But there’s also nothing wrong with being sexually active and I’m so tired of it being portrayed as such.

There’s even more things that bothered me, but I don’t have any more energy to put into this book. Maybe some people will enjoy it, but it was definitely not for me.

i find it funny that this has the lowest average rating of any book i’ve read and yet it falls into the top half (at worst) in terms of enjoyment. i suppose this is my sign to embrace the contrarian in me. and to ignore average ratings, because—well, collective opinions on books can’t be quantified in any meaningful way, and it’s about time i stop searching for meaning in the arbitrary.

my roommate is a vampire is exactly what it seems: a silly goofy time, a delightfully entertaining rom com about a human falling for her vampire roommate. i liked this so much more than i thought i was going to. for one, cassie was a solid protagonist. idk but the “struggling artist” characters will always have my heart, even if they’re 30+ and financially unstable and can’t keep an apartment (or a relationship, for that matter) for more than a few months. i know what it’s like to want to pursue what you love at all costs, to have a vision that no one and nothing can take from you. we don’t give artists the credit they deserve in any way, shape, or form—and that breaks my heart, because without them we’d live in a colorless world. frederick was a really sweet love interest, obsessed (we love) and protective and supportive and interested in her art even if he didn’t quite get it (!!!!!). there was so much unfulfilled potential to make him a more developed, three dimensional character though, what with his big age and myriad experiences in those years. we got to a know a little bit about him and his past through conversations with cassie but i still feel like i don’t know him all that well.

the relationship between cassie and frederick was done well, for the most part. i adored the notes they left for each other 🥹 and their adventures trying to get frederick to adapt to the modern world, while struggling with their feelings for each other, were so much fun to read about. i just hate that once they had sex, their relationship lost all of that magic and tension and flirty banter and felt more physical than anything, and i lost the connection i initially had with them as a couple.

and the last idk 30-40 pages were absolutely rushed. the conflict was resolved SO quickly that i think it honestly would’ve been better without it or at the very least altered to be more believable. but also this is a book about a human-vampire relationship so… maybe that’s asking for too much.

“Do not think for one moment that you are replaceable, Cassie Greenberg,” he said. He sounded almost angry. “For you are anything but.”

Spice: 🌶️🌶️

This review is spoiler-free

This is as cute as it was made out to be. It understandably isn't perfect since it's a debut novel (you need to give the author time to grow), but it is delightfully funny, sweet, and romantic. The number of times I laughed and awed is countless. However, those little flaws scattered here and there irritated me a little at times. There are several cringe lines and banal romantic moments, some questionable decisions that made me roll my eyes so hard I gave myself a headache, and basic writing.

Nonetheless, I liked the characters. Cassie, while not a particularly stimulating character, or bright, is sweet and kind. It took a while for me to warm up to her but I gave in eventually. She is in her thirties and still trying to figure out life, which is a much-needed representation in novels, although it triggered my fear of my impending doom. (The thirties are coming, guys. 😨 Her decision-making skills are a trainwreck, and I strongly believe that she should have figured out Fredrick is a vampire in the first five minutes of meeting him.

Speaking of which, I liked Fredrick a little more than I did Cassie. Firstly, he has dimples and that is important to me. Secondly, while his decision-making skills aren't much better than Cassie's, they are born from a lack of experience in the modern era. He is charming, compassionate, and a giant marshmallow sex on legs.

As I already mentioned, the romance between Cassie and Freddie is a bit cliché, with a ton of cheesy lines throughout the book, but it is still sweet, spicy, and largely uneventful. I am all for complicated situations and intense conflicts, but sometimes I just want something simple and easily resolved. It relaxes me and makes me happy.

Lastly, my favorite character in the entire book is Reginald. He is the comedic highlight in an already hilarious story. He is a rascal, a vampiric trickster demon if you will. He is also determined to be as unhelpful as humanly, or inhumanly, possible, which is honestly a mood. Unless of course, the occasion is serious. In that case, he limits himself to bad jokes, light sarcasm, and judgemental eye rolls. Besides, it is insinuated in the epilogue that there might be a story coming with him as the lead and I hope that becomes reality as he isn't nearly as present in this book as he should rightfully be.

Ok so this was so good! The perfect paranormal rom com. Read it during spooky season. Read it anytime. Read it right now. Thanks so much to NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is just so fun, so quirky, so adorable. I ate this up and finished it in one day and didn't even realize time was just flying by?! When I got closer to the end, I was shocked and disappointed that it was almost over. The story hooked me (with its fangs. sorry I had to please forgive me) right from the start and didn't let go. Its written in first person POV, which is my fave. Cassie is a sweet, doing-her-best starving artist who meets Frederick (once referred to in the book as Count von Romeo, a name which I whole-heartedly agree with) the sexy vamp who is trying to re-acclimate himself to modern society after being cursed into a century-long slumber. And they are, of course, roommates. Forced proximity, opposites attract, and roommate trope lovers rejoice. Cassie helps him learn the wonderful ways of the twenty-first century (WiFi, women in scandalous bikinis, the literary power of a henley, among others), resulting in the sweetest and truest definition of a rom com, particularly when Cassie finds his google search history ("how to....." fill in the blank hehe). This gets 4 stars instead of 5 ONLY because of the third act conflict, which was basically just a struggle that was resolved super quickly with little effort. However this meant that there was no big moment where you momentarily hated either of the main characters like you find in so many books today, which was refreshing for me. Frederick is perfect. Cassie is perfect. The end.

I'll be buying the physical copy of this for my bookshelf as soon as it comes out. Hoping for a book two about Reginald, who is also perfect and also the real MVP of this. Love that vamp for both his pranks and poor taste in door mats. Again, go read this book during spooky season or literally any other season! Its entertaining. Its funny. Its sweet. Its got everything you're looking for in a quick and spooky paranormal love story. Frederick somehow manages to pull off both brooding and clueless, and his chemistry with light-hearted Cassie works great.

Spoiler-free review~ 4.25 ⭐'s 💜🩷✨️

Again, I apoligise for the late review, but here it is after 2 months. Now let's dive into the review 🤭
This book right here, ladies and gentlemen, was the PERFECT vampire read I've read to date 🙂‍↕️🫶🏻. Add that with rewatching the Twilight movie series, it was too perfect for me 🧛🏻‍♀️🤭 I had a big wide smile the entire time I was reading this😁

Alright, without further ado, ✨️ let's meet the characters ✨️:

“My roommate was a vampie, Fredrick. And I had no idea.”

Cassie Greenberg- she's a struggling artist who is very passionate about what she creates 😇. She is still juggling between jobs that have nothing/little to do with her talent. Suddenly, her landlord evicts her, and she has to find a place soon, and that's when she stumbles upon a suspicious ad placed by our vampire looking for a roommate.

“Over the past two weeks I've discovered that in this city of millions, you are one of a kind.”

“I've been watching subtitled Korean dramas on Netflix.”

Frederick J. Fitzwilliam- our 300 years old cute vampire, who doesn't know how to adjust into this modern world, decides to have a roommate so he can observe their daily life. When I say he is cute, HE IS THAT CUTE 🥹💘 (also, he watches kdramas y'all, so he can dress like those korean men. NOW I NEED A VAMPIRE LIKE HIM IN MY LIFE 😭😭)

“Because if something happens to you tomorrow night Fredrick will kill me a second time.”

Reginald- Frederick's vampire friend, whenever he appeared, or even the texts between him & Frederick, made me laugh so much!😂 They both love-hate eachother 😆 I can't wait to read his story in the next book!😍

Sam- Cassie's bsf. He was that friend who would advise you and tell you what they think is wrong without any hesitance. He is so protective when it comes to Cassie.

Read this if you like 💌:
💜 Roomates-to-friends-to-lovers

💜 Forbidden paranormal romance
💜 Forced Proximity
💜 “Who did this to you?”
💜 Slow Burn
💜 Age gap romance

I'm amazed to know this was the author's debut book, and she really killed it with her beautiful writing!🥰💜 I have read so many paranormal romances, but this one tops everything for now, even if the slow burn was slow burning. I seriously recommend everyone to go and read this book this fall season if you haven't already 😌🤌🏻

🌶 chp: 16

The only reason this wasn't a 5 ⭐️ cuz I felt that the ending was rushed.

𝓢𝓸𝓶𝓮 𝓯𝓪𝓿𝓸𝓾𝓻𝓲𝓽𝓮 𝓪𝓷𝓷𝓸𝓽𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷𝓼 💌:

“Do not think for one moment that you are replaceable, Cassie Greenberg. For you are anything but.”

“I simply do not understand this modern urg to share errant thought one has with the entire world the instant it happens.”

“Cassie likes this shirt. I will take one in every color.”

“If it were up to me, I would hire you in a heartbeat.”

“You are not a failure. Anyone who made you feel like one will have me to deal with.”

“But I never said I wasn't a selfish man. Or that I was a good one, for that matter.”

A contemporary romance whose love interest just happens to be an endearingly formal, well-mannered, and gently inquisitive vampire. I smiled and smiled at this book from beginning to end—so sweet and funny, particularly the notes they leave for each other and his puzzlement over/misunderstanding of modern language and customs.

It’s a little light on plot (if you enjoy Erin Sterling/Rachel Hawkins YA, I expect you’d enjoy this), isn’t much interested in complicated supernatural stuff, you might wonder why she doesn’t ask more questions, and it gets a little scattershot towards the end, but I don’t even care. An enjoyable little Halloween bonbon.

‘He might be an undead creature of the night - but as undead creatures of the night went, he was a marshmallow.’

My Roommate is a Vampire is a fun and light hearted novel that follows the adventures of protagonist Cassie as she navigates the challenges of sharing an apartment with a vampire named Frederick. Levine's writing is witty and engaging, with plenty of humorous moments that will leave readers chuckling.

The dynamic between Cassie and Frederick is the heart of the story, as they navigate the ups and downs of living together while trying to keep Frederick's vampiric tendencies under wraps. The banter between the two leads is charming and entertaining, and their growing friendship is endearing to watch unfold.

My Roommate is a Vampire may not offer groundbreaking storytelling or deep thematic exploration, but it succeeds in delivering a fun and entertaining read that is perfect for fans of light hearted paranormal romance.

The engaging characters and breezy writing style made this novel a delightful escape from reality. It offers readers a chance to indulge in a bit of supernatural fun without taking themselves too seriously.

Recommend.

Divertida, diferente y dicharachera.

My Roommate Is a Vampire by Jenna Levine is a debut paranormal romantic comedy. Cassie Greenberg has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Applied Arts and Design and loves being an artist. Unfortunately, she can’t earn a living that way so she works part-time at a coffee shop and part-time in the children’s section of her local library in Chicago, Illinois.

Unfortunately, she’s being evicted from her apartment and needs to find a new place to live. She finally decides to answer an ad in a great part of town. The only concern: the price is too low for the area. With few alternatives, Cassie becomes roommates with Frederick J. Fitzwilliam. He sleeps all day and is out at night on business. They leave notes for each other and rarely talk until Cassie finds bags of blood in the refrigerator and runs out of the apartment.

Cassie is kind, generous, and can get brusque when she’s stressed. Frederick is thoughtful, compassionate, formal, and has a straightforward manner. The other characters are a mixture of friends, family, and antagonists with varying degrees of depth.

Filled with awkward and the occasional laugh-out-loud moments, this was an entertaining and light read. There are no spicy scenes until about three-quarters of the way through the novel. There’s also not a lot if conflict until the second half of the book.

Overall, this was fun and charming, but the ending was too quick and easily resolved in this slow burn romance for me. While there wasn’t enough depth to the plot for my tastes, I still enjoyed it. Those who like light and funny paranormal romances will likely find this one entertaining.

Berkley Publishing Group and Jenna Levine provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently set for August 29, 2023.

This is a slow burn, paranormal, comfort read romance, and I feel like this ultra specific and quirky genre is really becoming popular. With the stresses of everyday life becoming greater and greater, I think some readers are searching for stories that are low stakes/angst, but full of heart and adorable vibes. If that’s what you’re looking for, My Roommate Is a Vampire is perfect for you. If you’re looking for world building involving the paranormal aspects, heavy plot progression, or spicy scenes, this probably isn’t the book for you. I think the right reader will really resonate with the overall feels here, and I can see this book being equally comforting any time of year.

*Many thanks to the publisher for providing my review copy.

That was dumb as hell.
description

Minus the sex scene, Cassie and Fredrick seemed like teenagers cosplaying as adults. He just felt like a dude always in the middle doing a rehearsal for a low budget play as the vampire character. She was so stale and dense. I lost count of the amount of times Cassie would keep asking why Fredrick, the vampire who was unconscious for the last 100 years and just woke up, is unaware of how anything of the last 100 years works. Y'all, the last 10% was so bad. 😂 There was clearly no effort put into it.

The silliness and tone of the story overall would've actually made way more sense as a graphic novel.

This was exactly what I needed. A fun, steamy and sweet vampire book. Vampire is a huge buzz word for me; ahem..thank you Buffy The Vampire Slayer for that so I scoop up any book I can about vampires.
The plot of this is a little quirky and best not taken to seriously but it was a fun time.
Fredrick the 18th century vampire not knowing how to navigate the modern world and dresses in 3 piece suits and a top hat was adorable. The romance was cute and I had a fun time reading it.
Would recommend if your looking for a cute, somewhat silly and fun vampire read.

“Over the past two weeks I’ve discovered that in this city of millions, you are one of a kind.”

── ☾✨💕💌 - This absolute delight of a book blessed my October. I feel like I should bow down or something like one of those historical TV shows to show my full gratitude. Now I can brag to everyone that I had a 5 star-ed halloween read, go be jealous.

You guys told me this book was a bomb but forgot to warn me it would completely blow me away?!! I couldn't unglue myself from this book long enough to drop off some updates. From the first page, this book had me smiling so hard. It got me to put down my full interest on the table and I was too involved to care. Stepping into the story and adjusting to it's flow was as casual as stepping into the next room. Getting to know the characters took me little to no effort; it was like I knew them all my life. Reading this book felt like sitting on my balcony in the autumn chill, wrapped in my favorite blanket with a cup of pumpkin spiced latte (go away, it's a necessity) and spying on my next-door neighbours with my imaginary binoculars (don't get me wrong, i don't actually spy on my neighbours. #teasupremacy but no)

Sypnosis: An aspiring young artist in crisis and her all-too-charming vampire roommate come together in this brilliantly crafted page-turner. Living with a gorgeous immortal who knows nothing of modern life in 21st century can go wrong in so many ways, especially when hearts get involved and friends and meddlesome relatives knock on the door with every intention of stirring up trouble.

This book delivered-
・Fuzzy-cozy vibes
・Romance
・Comedy
・Contemporary fantasy
・Human & vampire cohabitation
・Mutual pining
-and it delivered too well, you would be tempted to leave complimentary notes and some extra tips.

╰┈➤ Frederick
First of all—
Sir vampire,
I'm currently homeless and urgently in need of an apartment, so /omw, bully my landlady into evicting me/ if you would be so kind to consider my misfortunes. I would not be of any inconvenience to you and I definitely won't snoop around in your absence, I promise. Your bedroom and broom closet would be safe with me.
Sincerely yours

-Let me tell you how fine our Fredrick J-something guy is. He literally speaks textbook-perfect English; I imagined it follows a perfect British accent as well. His words were so ridiculously pretty and he had a great fashion sense; you could see me drooling over his expensive three-piece suits and vintage wing-tipped shoes, exactly my kind of guy. He is what I would call a modern day fanged gentleman. Trust me when I say Jane freaking Austen mothered him, took a look at his face and just knew her son was too good to be like us useless humans, so she brought him to a witch and said, 'Please, turn my son into a vampire'; otherwise, there's no way he's effortlessly carrying Jane Austen's MMC vibes so well.

-Imagine a three hundred over something immortal dude who acts like he stepped out of a regency dream, looks at our FMC with heart eyes, stays up past his bedtime waiting for her texts, blushing and giggling over a text from his favorite person, leaves her letters in his perfect calligraphy-like handwriting all over their apartment and learns to cook her favorite foods even though he can't eat. Yes, you heard me right. He's a lost cause when it comes to navigating the ways of the modern world; like someone really needs to teach him some social media short forms and damn what I wouldn't give to sneak a peek at his google search history.

╰┈➤ Cassie
-Cassie's first introduction? She was knee-deep in trouble, or should I say neck-deep? Whatever term fits for a part-homeless person who's been living without wifi to save money and jumps directly at a suspicious ad looking for a roommate, I love her so much for it though; good job, best decesion ever. After reading the book Hello Stranger by Katherine Center, I've had a thing for FMCs who have an artistic career. I found their in-depth work process description quite interesting, so falling in love with Cassie and her passion for art was almost too easy.

-I adored her as a character and her 'snort out loud' kind of humour. To think about it, Cassie, with her movies/ tv shows/ social media referenced 21st century humor and Frederick's 'I don't know why they are laughing at my word choice' kind of humor were a perfect combination and everything I expected from a rom-com novel. Her reactions to particular situations didn't feel like it were overdone and that was actually nice. I especially liked her hands-on instructions to Frederick and the way she was so dedicated to the whole 'teaching him everything she knows' thing while fooling herself she wasn't falling in love (#Denial-is-a-river-in-Egypt). The chemistry between them was one of a kind, no boring moments or whatsover, which made reading this so much fun.

── ☾✨💕💌 - There were so many Frederick-Cassie moments I loved; they are literally my new favorite comfort couple and will be living on $200 per month rent in my mind, did you just see me pull up another reference? No, you didn't. In my opinion, the cutest scene in the book was
--->when cassie was rewatching 'buffy the vampire slayer' on their new tv while working on her sketches and frederick joined her, he told her he had seen the show before and they started debating whether angel or spike was hotter and how much of the show was legit<---
I was a sucker for those opening notes on each chapter and the emails and letters they shared. It was illegal how cute those were, even when they were talking about the apartment via email before being roommates. My heart did silly little flips over those 'Dear Miss Greenberg' to 'Dear Cassie' to 'Yours Frederick'. The communication between them was just remarkable, other fictional couples should line up and take notes.

The men of honor, come take your cake .

-I want what Cassie has with her lawyer best friend Sam. He's the best, he's my boo; I want him to solve my legal problems and my life problems too. I want to go around flexing the 'my bestie is a kick-ass lawyer; if you want jail food, you're welcome' card cause honestly, if you don't have a friend to bail you out of jail, what are you even doing!?

-Frederick's friend Reginald is such a mood; dramatic is literally his middle name. I know Frederick is lying when he says he hates him like come on, who can hate that guy? He might have put him in a century-long sleep and made an honest to god typo while putting up the exact rent of his friend's apartment and sometimes swinged by with poor relationship advice, but hey, can't blame the guy for trying.

Quotes.

“Living with someone you think is hot never ends well. You either end up sleeping with them—which is a huge mistake, nine times out of ten—or else you drive yourself nuts because you want to sleep with them.”

“The twenty-first century may be what finally kills me after all these years—if living with Miss Greenberg doesn’t do it first.”

“I’ve never met anyone who’s a hopeless case.”
“You have never met anyone like me, Miss Greenberg.”

“When I think about Cassie never returning to me it makes me sad. Waking up in the evening isn't exciting anymore now that I know I won't be seeing her face.”

“Frederick—a man who hated texting, and who by all accounts should have been asleep at that hour—replied immediately. Like he’d been sitting there all this time, phone in hand, waiting for me to reach out.”

“Do not think for one moment that you are replaceable, Cassie Greenberg.”

“You, are magnificent beyond my wildest imaginings.”

“That man is head over fangs for you. The past few weeks have been a nightmare for me, personally, with how often I’ve had to listen to that goofball wax poetic about your literally everything.”

plot : I genuinely think this plot is good. maybe I am so fantasy-romance deprived, but it was a fun read.

cassie's landlord is frederick, who is a vampire and he is trying to integrate into the current world (pretty interesting plot coming on here!)

it is so interesting to see someone (especially a 300 year old vampire) trying to navigate easy tasks that we take it for granted, and I laughed too many times to count.

writing, characterisation I enjoyed the writing, it was lighthearted (as expected) and the characters' chemistry was really good.

pre-read
🌷 started on 6 September, finished on 10 September

I need a light-hearted, fun read which takes me away from 14 hours worth of studying… hopefully this lives up to my expectations!
