UNANSWERED QUESTIONS . . .
My name is Charlotte Locke, and I’m on a mission to capture my nemesis. As an analyst for Section 47, a secret spy organization, I use my magical form of synesthesia to track down paramortal criminals, but one villain keeps eluding me—Henrika Hyde.

Henrika claims to have answers about my father’s death on a Section 47 mission years ago, and she has also created a horrific new weapon capable of killing even the strongest paramortals, which makes her my number one target. Helping me is Desmond Percy, a powerful galvanist who is my partner both inside and outside Section 47.

Desmond wants to take Henrika down just as badly as I do, but our mission quickly goes sideways, and soon we’re surrounded by enemies on all sides with no idea whom we can truly trust.

A TROUBLING FUTURE . . .
The name Desmond Percy is well known inside Section 47, since I’m one of the organization’s top cleaners, aka assassins. Charlotte Locke and I have been tracking Henrika Hyde for months, and when we finally get a lead on her location, we jump at the chance to take down the weapons maker once and for all.

I’m determined to help Charlotte get the answers she is so desperately seeking, as well as taking my revenge on Henrika for killing my best friend.

But the deeper Charlotte and I dig into Henrika and her murky motives, the more dangerous our mission becomes. Henrika is playing her own spy game, and Charlotte and I are just the pawns she is using to achieve her own evil ends—caught up in a deadly legacy of treachery.

Although I think a few fewer pages would have made for a more tense pace, Desmond and Charlotte do not disappoint this time either, but the usual elusive Henrika is an increasingly cumbersome presence. Meanwhile, both Joan and Gabriel are carving out roles for themselves that seem a little different from those of background figures. Perhaps there will even be books dedicated to them, I hope, as I hope we don't have to wait another two years for the fourth volume of this series. At the beginning, I could hardly remember anything...

A Touch of Treachery is the Third installment in author Jennifer Estep's Section 4 series. A Touch of Treachery picks up with Charlotte, an analyst for Section 47, who wields a magical form of synesthesia that allows her to sense danger and uncover lies, trying to find a way to finally beat her nemesis. Her primary target is Henrika Hyde, a cunning and elusive villain who claims to hold secrets about Charlotte’s father’s death on a Section 47 mission years ago.

A touch disappointing

In the third instalment of the Section 47 series, Charlotte and Desmond are still on the trail of Henrietta, attempting both to halt her crimes and uncover the traitors within their own organisation. Unfortunately, the continuation of the Henrietta arc left me frustrated rather than thrilled. The narrative feels stretched, and instead of resolution, we get more betrayals and another exposed enemy—further highlighting how surprisingly lax Section 47 seems to be in its own internal security.

One of the greatest disappointments is Desmond. He’s repeatedly described as one of the best “cleaners,” yet his performance in hand-to-hand combat and fight scenes was underwhelming. I expected sharper, more impressive sequences from someone with his reputation.

Meanwhile, Charlotte and Desmond’s banter, once witty, has become stale. Their recurring jokes about smoothies and pastries feel recycled rather than charming, adding little freshness to the story.

The book concludes with Henrietta still at large, another betrayal unveiled, and an overall sense of treading water rather than progressing the series. What once promised intrigue and suspense is starting to feel repetitive and thin. For me, A Touch of Treachery was not as engaging as earlier entries, and I’m no longer sure I want to continue with the series.

This was an interesting book. Charlotte and Desmond got answers to things they have been wondering for a while, but it was so very messy to get those answers. And they had an unexpected ally to help them, one who usually is a foe. These answers also had the chance of splitting the couple up. So while it was great to get answers, it was more than a little crazy. It will be interesting to see what happens next, for the couple and for Section 47.

4.25stars-A TOUCH OF TREACHERY is the third instalment in Jennifer Estep’s contemporary adult SECTION 47 paranormal, urban fantasy series focusing on diner owner / paramortal analyst for Section 47 Charlotte Locke, and assassin/cleaner Desmond Percy. A TOUCH OF TREACHERY can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion as there is an ongoing premise throughout.

SOME BACKGROUND: Paramortals make up approximately one percent of the world’s population, and most have hidden their magic from the ‘mortal’ world. Section 47 is a paramortal spy organization whose mission was to gather intelligence to prevent terrorist attacks but found themselves tracking those who use magic to commit their crimes.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Charlotte and Desmond) A TOUCH OF TREACHERY focuses on the investigation into CEO and founder of Hyde Engineering Henrika Hyde, a chemist who has invented a powerful weapon known as Redburn, in her war against the paramortal but at every opportunity, Section 47 agents Charlotte Locke and Desmond Percy find themselves in a losing battle, and our heroine is about to pay the price for the sins of the past. Charlotte and Desmond are both Legacy agents, children of Section 47 operatives, but a target has been placed on Charlotte’s back, and our heroine is determined to follows the clues and reveal the truth. Henrika Hyde is hoping to sell Redburn to the highest bidder, and our couple are last minute invites to the bioweapon auction.

The world building is complex and detailed as Charlotte and Desmond find themselves in a fight for their lives. From auctions to fundraisers, abductions and murder, betrayal and vengeance, Charlotte and Desmond struggle to accept the revelations at face value, in an effort to uncover the truth and the reality of the who, how and why. For fans and followers of the author’s books and series, the similarities to her Elemental Assassin series are numerous and recognizable.

The relationship between Charlotte and Desmond continues to be strong in the face of perceived betrayal and dysfunctional family dynamics. Several agents question the validity of their relationship, and the people in charge are determined to separate and dismantle any future together. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate.

There is a large ensemble cast of powerful, energetic and sometimes questionable secondary and supporting characters including Henrika Hyde; Section 47 agents: liason Joan Samson, Gia Chan and Diego Benito; former Section 47 Agents Gabriel Chase, and Bryce Finkley, and Desmond’s father General Jethro Percy, head of Second 47 Board of Directors.

A TOUCH OF TREACHERY is a story of power and control, secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, mistrust and magic, acceptance and love. The fast paced premise is dramatic and edgy; the romance is heartwarming; the characters are determined, desperate and charismatic.

A Touch of Treachery by Jennifer Estep is a Section 47 series. Refresher: Section 47 is a secret government agency that handles paranormal, terrorists, criminals, and have magical abilities. Their job is to gather information to prevent attacks, casualties, as well as to protect the mortal world; especially against those who create dangerous weapons.

Charlotte Locke, our heroine, is an analyst, who is very good at her job analyzing various reports and files to find mistakes, patterns, and anything that looks like threats. Charlotte also has some magical abilities, such as having synesthesia ability to sense danger and detect lies. Charlotte is determined to stop a powerful villain, Henrika Hyde; but importantly she wants answers as to who killed her father. Charlotte knows that Henrika knows the truth, and suspects Jethro Percy as the man who killed him. Percy hates Charlotte, as her father was a Locke; but Desmond Percy is Charlotte’s partner and love interest.

Desmond, our hero, and also a Section 47 Assassin, who is considered one of the best; as he also has powerful Galvanist abilities, which he is able to use the energy around to prevent attacks as well as be able to heal.

Both Charlotte and Desmond are invited to Henrika’s mansion for a party, and they hope she will give them the list that Henrika has hidden, revealing all the names of Section 47. They both attend, trying to make a deal to get the papers; and there are other people attending that are friends of Henrika, who are interested in the weapons that people want. Henrika is playing her own spy game, and being used as pawns, with Desmond being kidnapped, and Charlotte, despite Jethro firing her, she finds a way to save Desmond; with help from Joan and Gabriel.

When Charlotte gets a tip from Henrika, as to the truths about Jethro being part of her father’s death. She puts together all information that will reveal Jethro’s past partnership with Henrika, and revelations will be revealed, leading information about all the terrible things, and money from the Locke family that Jethro stole. This was a legacy that was a touch of Treachery.

What follows is an exciting, action filled, suspenseful story that kept me unable to put the book down. Charlotte was a great heroine, as she was not only smart & savvy, but unbeknownst to others, lethal with a weapon, since she learned from her father. I also loved Desmond, as he was not only a sexy hunk, but also very confident with his ability; and was very much in love with Charlotte. He was the one who needed to stop his father.

A Touch of Treachery is another wonderful addition to this wonderful and intriguing urban fantasy series. A Touch of Treachery was very well written by Jennifer Estep. I loved both Charlotte and Desmond, and look forward to more on them in future books. I suggest you read A Touch of Treachery, as was a great read.

Reviewed on Lili Lost in a Book

I think it goes without saying that I loved this book. Jennifer Estep is my favorite author, so I can definitely be biased 😆 But it really was good! We haven't had a new book in this series for quite some time, so I was particularly excited about that, especially because urban fantasy remains my favorite genre to this day. And this series is filled with spies, assassins, and a ton of really cool magic! I love it!

Another thing I love is the action. It's actually one of my favorite things about this author's books! The action sequences she writes are always really good! And her books always start with action, so I am always immediately hooked. And then the fight sequence at the end of this book, I was STRESSED, let me tell you. Lol.

I also love all the lovable characters Jennifer Estep brings to life in her books. I immediately fall in love with them, without fail. Lol. Desmond, for example, I forgot how freaking sweet he was. He is just so thoughtful and respectful of Charlotte. May a love like that find me one day 🥹 I literally cannot get over how cute they are together!

But it's not just the romance in this book that I loved. I also really enjoyed the friendships and camaraderie among the characters. Especially the supportive and trusting friendship between Charlotte and Gabriel. And not to mention the banter and budding bromance between Gabriel and Desmond 😆 It's always a fun time. Lol.

I even like the antagonists. Henrika is just such an intriguing, conniving character. In this book, we find out more about her, some backstory and motivations behind her actions. It was interesting. And then there's Jethro Percy, Desmond's dad and superior. I'm calling him an antagonist just for the fact that he's an asshole. Lol. He was such an infuriating character, with how he treated Charlotte and even his own son. But infuriating in a good way. He is not meant to be a likable character, and boy, did I dislike him. Lol.

One thing I have to mention that was a really nice surprise for me was the setting. I don't know what it is about books set in a ski resort-type location, but I am such a sucker for them! Not that I go to ski resorts often—I went once for a 4th-grade field trip, and let me tell you, I am not coordinated enough for skiing. I kid you not, I literally ran into a fence that time 🤣 Anyway, maybe thats why I like this setting so much—because I don’t go to these types of place often (even though we have a ski resort/lodge pretty close to where I live. But in my defense, I am neither coordinated nor outdoorsy for that, sooo 😂). But it’s just a fun time in books. Especially because Desmond and Charlotte were undercover and attending some fancy events at the resort.

This book is called A Touch of Treachery , and let me tell you, there was treachery indeed. And it was wild! In the end, when all the revelations and confessions came to light, there was one character I felt really bad for because they did not deserve this heinous betrayal. But the story leading up to this was really good! The twists and turns were so well done! I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Treachery abounds in this thrilling hunt for a master villain that keeps slipping through the cracks.

I absolutely love Charlotte and Desmond. They are one of my favourite book couples ever. Individually, they are smart and dedicated, and they use their abilities effectively and efficiently. It is a pleasure to see them in their natural element. Together, they are pure magic.

Henrika felt a bit like a cartoon villain at times, twirling her metaphorical mustache, which contributed to the fun in this story. But she was undeniably diabolical, and a formidable and unpredictable opponent. This book revealed more details about her, making her more complex and I (gasp) think I actually liked her (just a little bit).

The spectacular ending came about with a few major unexpected twists. I had my heart in my throat pretty much the entire time. There were also a few bonus epilogues that added to the sweet satisfaction of a job well done and the vague hints of future intrigue. I cannot wait for the next adventure.

I can highly recommend this series if you like spy thrillers with spicy romance in an urban fantasy setting. It is best to read the books in order, as they establish the characters and the world building.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I love Charlotte and Desmond and I will say I did figure out one of the twists very early on in a small way. But I still enjoyed this. I listened to it all the way through in one day and was not disappointed. I like that this was very action packed and that the romance took a back seat. They're establishing themselves as a solid copy and are growing into it as opposed to fighting and having some grand reveal that means one betrayed the other. God I'm tired of that being used in books. I instead got a grand adventure and a return to teo of my favourite characters. I also like that we're getting more on Gabriel. He is great too and would love to see more of him in the next one. I love Jennifer's books and am eager to read anything she writes at this point.

Just keeps getting better and better

This is the 3rd Section 47 book and the stories just build and get better and better. Desmond and Charlotte work fantastically together and this book does not disappoint! I cannot wait for the next book and to see what happens next, not only with Desmond and Charlotte, but with Gabriel and Joan, and Evelyn as she her role as Maestro is revealed. Jennifer Estep is a fave, her attention to detail (especially food) & her bright, brave, & witty female protagonists are a delight. This Section 47 offering is no exception, Charlotte & Desmond continue the hunt for the big bad with help from their friends (& enemies). Charlotte finally gets some answers about her dad’s death while Desmond has to face some hard facts about his.
