I told ChatGPT to review this book, giving it very specific prompts. It hits all the points I wanted to make, but it added a lot of what feels to me like cheerleading. Judge for yourself:

Pam Baker’s Generative AI For Dummies is a solid introductory guide for anyone curious about the capabilities and applications of generative artificial intelligence. True to the “For Dummies” brand, the book takes a beginner-friendly approach, aiming to demystify complex topics and make them accessible to a broad audience.

One of the book’s strongest qualities is its breadth. Baker does an impressive job of covering a wide range of use cases for generative AI, spanning industries like marketing, entertainment, healthcare, education, and more. This broad scope makes the book valuable for readers from various backgrounds looking to understand how AI tools might be relevant to their fields. In particular, the chapters focused on generating both short-form and long-form content stand out as the most practical and well-structured. They offer actionable insights and relatable examples that clearly demonstrate AI’s creative potential.

However, the book does have its drawbacks. The first few chapters are notably slow, spending too much time introducing foundational concepts. While this may benefit readers with no prior exposure to AI, others may find it overly simplistic and repetitive. There is a noticeable lack of deep dives into the technical aspects or the implications of using these tools, which might leave more advanced or curious readers wanting more substance.

Another missed opportunity is the absence of a comprehensive appendix or directory. Baker references a wide variety of AI models and applications throughout the book, but they’re scattered across chapters with little consolidation. A centralized list or summary would greatly enhance the book’s usefulness as a reference tool.

Overall, Generative AI For Dummies succeeds as a wide-ranging and accessible primer, especially for those new to the field. It’s informative and approachable, though readers seeking depth or hands-on guidance may need to look elsewhere for more advanced resources.

•  Current GenAl models don't think or create things per se, but instead generate new things from parts of old things found in its database.

• GenAl can repurpose and remix only the data it has access to, which is a major reason why GenAl outputs can be highly reliable or totally false or something in-between.

• For complex topics, break down your inquiry into a series of prompts.

I read the paper back edition of Generative AI for dummies. I want to learn more about generative AI so I was excited to read the book. The book was written with the help of Generative AI.

I thought the book was interesting to read most of the time. Though there were some parts of the book I did not like reading as much.

The book talks about what genAI understands, lying to Ai, AI ethics, prompt chaining, prompt stitching, prompt aggregation, wrote social media posts, writing books, making music, making videos, talks about lots of different AI tools, writing prompts. So the book covers a lot.

So I found a lot of generative AI for dummies interesting, and I certainly learned about new AI tools and techniques. So I think that if you want to know about generative AI you might like this book.

Clear, Current, and Surprisingly Deep

This book breaks down complex AI concepts without watering them down. Pam Baker manages to stay beginner-friendly without being basic, no small feat. As someone studying AI and communication, I appreciated how well it connects the tech to real-world use cases, ethics, and the future of work.

A good introduction to AI

An informative guide to AI in a chatty style. The reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that the material tends to be quite repetitive at times.
