A sizzling exes-to-lovers second- chance romance from the author of Morbidly Yours, the “sweet, spicy, and fabulous” (Abby Jimenez, #1 New York Times bestselling author) TikTok sensation
She doesn’t do second chances. But he's not done writing their song.
Cielo “Lo” Valdez doesn’t believe in second chances. Surviving cancer taught her life is too short to spend time on someone who wronged you. But Aidan O’Toole is determined to show her life is best spent together.
When the tough-as-nails Texan moved to Galway for medical school, she wasn’t looking for love. Aidan, a gorgeous, tattooed, mandolin-playing lawyer, slipped past her defenses. They each fell hard and fast. But when Aidan was given the opportunity of a lifetime—to move to London and record an album—he took it, breaking Lo's heart. Yet more than two years and a successful album later, every song he writes is still about her, the one he let get away. And every time Lo hears his voice on the radio singing about love, it’s an arrow straight to her soul.
Now they’re on a collision course as maid of honor and best man at a weekend-long Irish castle wedding. Are some mistakes worth forgiving? Can Aidan convince Lo their song wasn’t meant to end?
Second-chance romance thats sweet, spicy, and a bit emotional.
What’s to love… - Rock Star/Musician + Med student - Curvy FMC in STEM - second chance romance - dual POV 1st person - Great banter - forced proximity/forced to work together - family trauma - Medium burn🌶️ @43% - The spice is good. very good. - The writing was certainly tighter than in the authors debut.
What’s not to love… - While there is some angst it didn’t feel nearly angsty enough for a second-chance romance - i didn’t connect with the characters as well as I’d hope to. I found Lo a little frustrating tbh. I think some will find her relatable but the fact that she cut off Aiden’s sister was the crack that started my frustration with her and I struggled to get over it, so each new lack of communication from her drove me further into frustration. - I was overall just a little bored while reading.
🌶️- Starts at 43%. Explicit with light bondage. Ch 16, 18, 22, 23, 28, 39
Heart Strings is a sweet and swoony second chance romance following medical resident Cielo, and her now famous musician ex Aiden. When the two are brought back together for the first time at their best friend's wedding as Best Man and Maid of Honor, they must decide if setting aside the past and giving their relationship another shot is worth all the potential heartbreak and drama.
This romance just breezed by with all the healthy communication and the dreamy setting! I loved that Aiden and Cielo didn't focus on their breakup and instead made up for their past mistakes and forgave each other right away. The two had such an obvious deep connection and mutual respect for each other, it was so refreshing to see that they understood where they were coming from and didn't lash out. I also loved the wedding backdrop and the Ireland setting, mixed with a hint of family drama, I was engaged all the way through from begining to end. If you're in the market for a romance that's equal parts heartfelt, emotional, and steamy, this is the book for you!

She thought he let her go too easily. He thought she’d already given up. But when fate brings them back together, neither can hide from the past… or the pull of their hearts.

This is a second-chance romance between Aiden, an Irish musician chasing his career, and Cielo, known as Lo, a nurse and survivor of lymphoblastic leukemia. Years ago, they ended their relationship when Aiden was offered the chance to move across the world for music. Lo felt he let her go too easily, while Aiden believed she had already made up her mind that long distance wouldn’t work. Now, fate throws them back together, and they’re forced to face both their unresolved past and their very present feelings.
I’ll be honest, I was a little confused and annoyed at first about why their relationship ended. The reasoning felt childish, and the miscommunication trope isn’t one I’m a big fan of. Lo’s immaturity when they first saw each other again made it even harder for me, because I really dislike when grudges are dragged out for years. It comes across as petty, and it made me frustrated with her.
But once they finally do clear the air, that’s when the story became more alive for me. Their scene of being completely vulnerable and honest, apologizing, admitting mistakes, and laying everything bare, was one of my favorite moments in the whole book. It was raw, emotional, and reminded me why second-chance romances can be so powerful when they’re done right.
Lo was also such a relatable character for me personally. The way she tries to take everything on herself, always striving for perfection and keeping stress off of others, even when it means drowning silently, hit close to home. Watching her slowly learn to let others step in, especially Aiden, was beautiful growth.
The spice caught me off guard in the best way. There was more than I expected, but it wasn’t just there for the sake of it. It added depth. The way dominance and submission were tied into Lo and Aiden’s relationship gave the intimacy an extra layer, showing how trust and vulnerability can be just as important in the bedroom as outside of it. And it was just well written all together 🥵 you’ll just have to read it to know what I mean.
The family dynamics and struggles woven into the story were heavy and at times hard to read, but they were so real. Forgiveness doesn’t come easy, and I appreciated how messy and raw it felt. Lo’s journey toward realizing that life is too short to hold grudges was powerful, and the ending tied it all together in such a satisfying way. My favorite part of the entire book was Lo’s growth, how she learned to express her feelings honestly and, most of all, how she finally let Aiden in. Their love became about partnership, support, and strength, rather than her trying to carry everything alone.
Watching Lo and Aiden untangle the knots of their past, finally open their hearts, and learn to trust each other again was beautiful. The story isn’t just about a second chance at love—it’s about vulnerability, growth, and the courage to let someone in. Their journey pulled at every emotional string, leaving me full, hopeful, and completely convinced that some loves are meant to be rewoven stronger than ever. By the end, this story truly had my heart strings tugged in all the right ways. 💞💞

I’m really excited for this arc. I’ve been craving a music based book for awhile 🎶
Big thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam | G.P. Putnam’s Sons for the eARC of Heart Strings by Ivy Fairbanks! 🎉📚
First things first — let’s talk about this COVER. CHEF’S KISS. 🎨😍 The artwork and aesthetics are pure eye candy. Instant shelf appeal, 10/10.
Did Heart Strings hit me like Morbidly Yours? Not exactly 😕 But was it still a good time? Absolutely!
I was totally invested in Callum and Lark in book one — their character arcs were basically perfection 💯. But Cielo (“Lo”) and Aidan just didn’t quite click for me. Their connection didn’t spark the same way 🔥✨.
The whole gang comes together because Callum and Lark are getting married, bringing Aidan and Cielo back to the same city — and THAT reunion brought ALL the feelings 🥹💍
The plot worked, the emotions landed, and Ivy Fairbanks definitely has my loyalty — I’m here for whatever she writes next! 🙌
If you want a love story where you really feel the characters, this might not be your jam 💔. But if swoony second chances, Irish vibes, and emotional moments are your thing, this one’s worth a read ☘️💚.
And omg, the pink cowgirl boots cameo? I smiled so big I almost cried 😂💖
This is the second book in the series, and I’d recommend reading Morbidly Yours first, since about half of the plot revolves around the wedding of the main characters from the first book.
I really enjoyed Morbidly Yours, but unfortunately, this one didn’t spark the same excitement. The characters are sweet, but I didn’t feel a deep connection or much chemistry between them.
I love the second-chance romance trope when there’s a compelling reason for the breakup—lots of longing, angst, and emotional turmoil—but that wasn’t the case here. Cielo and Aidan broke up two years ago because Aidan started pursuing his music career, and Cielo didn’t even try to make a long-distance relationship work. On the other hand, Aidan didn’t fight for her either. They parted ways quickly back then, and at the wedding, they got back together just as quickly.
Unfortunately, the book didn’t evoke strong emotions for me—it ended up feeling a bit flat. However, I did appreciate that the author tackled the topic of cancer and handled it well. And I was also happy to see Callum again!
Thank you to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam (G.P. Putnam's Sons) for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Cute, spicy, and full of cameos, which are one of the main reasons to read sequels.
Lo and Aiden used to be together, but Lo didn’t believe in long distance, so when Aiden moved to London to pursue his music career, they had a heated argument and broke up. Sigh. Don’t give up so easily, people!
They’d never moved on and it was great how organically they got back together. They’d missed each other so much that they didn’t waste time fighting or rehashing old arguments. Instead, they got busy remembering why they were so good together. Like VERY busy. 😏
I also loved that there was no third-act breakup. There was some drama toward the end, but luckily they’d learned from their mistakes and chose to stay together. 😌
There were a few things that I didn’t like — I hate meddling friends and song lyrics written into a book — but overall it was a cute story and I’m looking forward to the next installment.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

It’s not a guitar. It’s a mandoline. I’m so embarrassed now 🥲
——
Thank you Penguin Random House and Edelweiss for the arc, I'm so curious about the man with the guitar...
sigh, this was one of my most anticipated reads since i found out about it after absolutely loving morbidly yours and unfortunately i did not love it.
what started of promising died a very fast death around the 80% mark which i should have seen coming as “i love yous” were exchanged 76% in. as this was a second chance romance i tried not to think too hard into it, hoping that maybe wed just get fluff for the rest but i knew as soon as i read the end of 29 exactly what was coming lol.
what followed after was honestly my last straw with lo. i tried to keep pushing my feelings about her to the side, you know shes been through a lot but at what point are we going to call it what it is that she just simply isnt likeable. letting people rule your life the way she does is just insane at her grown age. she is everything that is wrong with the miscommunication trope. she lets nobody give their side of things before assuming the worst and shutting down. in all honesty aidan deserves better plain and simple.
i enjoyed this book for the most part, i loved getting to see cal and larks wedding shenanigans, i loved all things aidan but at the end of the day lo kind of spoiled it all for me. i had no interest in finishing the book after her thousandth melt down over easily avoidable things.
This year, I’ve been haunted by second chance romances — and I’ve loved most of them. Unfortunately, it wasn’t love at first sight with this book. I really enjoyed the first installment, so I had high hopes for this one. It wasn’t bad, but it just couldn’t hold my attention.
Thank you to G.P. Putnam's Sons and NetGalley for providing this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I got to the 50% mark fairly easily, but then it took me a while to finish it, so I would give it a 3.5, rounded up!
Firstly, from the book description, I thought Cielo was going to be a bitch, excuse my language. However, thankfully, I had misunderstood her severely. While I was reading, I realized that she has just been through so much and has a lot of expectations on her, both from the people around her, like her mother, as well as herself. She is an ambitious woman and I related so hard to her sometimes when it comes to expectations and even just overall, obviously minus the romance part 🤭. Her character, her demeanor, the way she handles the problems in her life was so inspiring.
Aidan was such a sweet guy. Honestly, giving goals! He wrote songs about their relationships which I think is so cute. The way he took care of his family was sweet and the way he wanted to just write songs.
The relationship dynamic was nice. I did feel a little bit of insta-love and insta-lust elements, but I didn't mind it too much. I wish there was more angst.
Overall, I definitely would recommend this book. It is book 2 in the series, but idk if it's standalone or not. I felt like I could understand everything, so maybe consider reading book 1 first for more info about some of the other characters.
Second chance is literally such a good trope and you couldn't ever tell me that it wouldn't hit!
Thank you to Ivy Fairbanks, PENGUIN GROUP Putnam, and Netgalley for this arc! 💕
----------
pre-read: ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, stop. I just got the arc. One of my favorite tropes: second chance because it will alway SERVE....serve angst to be specific! I'm actually going to be dropping everything to read this.
I’m up to page 89 and this book is giving me all the cute and fluffy vibes. It’s definitely a second-chance romance, and you can really feel the spark and attraction still lingering between them. So far there hasn’t been much drama, which makes it such a cozy and easy read. I love that we get both POVs it makes me root for them even more. Aidan, the cool Irish musician, and Lo, the determined medical student, are such a sweet pair. I’m really hoping they find their way back to each other.
Final Review: This one was simple and sweet, but for me it just didn’t have enough drama. The romance was okay, but it wasn’t exciting enough to really pull me in. It’s not a bad read at all just more on the light side.
💌 Verdict: I was looking for more from this second-chance romance. It wasn’t terrible, but it read more like a Sunday Hallmark movie just with a little added spice. Not runied, I like to be left Ruined after reading a book.
What to expect from this book: ✂️ He wrote an entire album about her 🎶 Cancer survivor who is going to school to be a doctor ✂️ Exes to lovers 🎶 She’s in control but he’s possessive ✂️ Binding kink 🎶 Dual first-person POV ✂️ 5 open door spicy scenes
“To the ones worth waiting for” 🥂
This is the second book in the Love in Galway series. While it could be read as a standalone, it makes more sense if you read book 1 (Morbidly Yours) first. Heart Strings takes place 2+ years after the end of Morbidly Yours.
Cielo “Lo” is an American living in Ireland while she goes through Med School. Aidan is a singer/songwriter from Galway (born in Cork), and Lo’s ex.
Since their breakup, Lo has done her best to avoid all traces of Aidan…which is hard to do since he has a song (written about her) that is on the radio. But when Lo’s cousin Lark marries Aidan’s friend Callum, Lo and Aidan are bound as maid of honor and best man—bound being the operative word! 🥵
Still guarded with hurt surrounding their breakup, Lo and Aidan decide if giving it another go would be a good idea or if they should leave the past in the past. What will become of their apology tour?
————————————
You know what? I wasn’t into this book for the first 30%. It wasn’t bad or anything, it just wasn’t clicking with me for some reason. But that changed during the last 70%. I liked the dynamic between the two main characters. The relationship conflicts between Lo and her parents was a nice side plot. The book isn’t without faults, but overall I thought this was a fun read. I even liked this book more than the first.
Thank you to NetGalley, PENGUIN GROUP Putnam | G.P. Putnam's Sons and Ivy Fairbanks for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for this arc in exchange for an honest review!
2.75 stars
I'm sad to say this wasn't for me.
I remember enjoying the first one and liking the Galway setting. This one seemed like a huge departure from the first.
There wasn't much chemistry between the two characters and there wasn't much emotional depth in general. Everything just seemed very two dimensional and the writing was sterile. Just nothing really to get the reader attached and invested in what was going on.
And there wasn't much flow to this book. Chapters seemed to end abruptly, conversations went back and forth with a lot of back to back dialogue, and again, there wasn't a lot of emotion in some of these hard conversations. At times felt like the author was trying to get from A to B in the fastest way possible.
this was a cute follow-up to morbidly yours, but in all honesty, i didn’t remember cielo or adian being introduced in the first place (granted i read morbidly yours over a year and a half ago…)
def liked this one more than the first!! there were tears and there was yearning and there were laughs and there were wholesome moments. basically, this did everything i could ever want a second chance romance to do. the characters are so so easy to root for while also feeling very realistic, the romance felt genuine, it was just all so amazing. my one complaint would be with the ending – felt a tiny bit rushed + left a little to be desired – but overall i had such a great time!
thank you to penguin & netgalley for the arc! all opinions are my own <3
First of all, let’s take a moment to appreciate just how adorable this cover is. I absolutely love it! Second, this book truly pulled on my heartstrings (see what I did there? 😉).
I adore Lo. She’s the kind of FMC I’d love to meet for coffee and give a hug to, just to tell her how strong I think she is.
It was so easy to root for Lo and Aidan. Their journey toward love unfolds like a beautiful, heartbreaking melody, and it’s one I’ll definitely be coming back to time and time again.
If you haven’t already, make sure to pick up Ivy’s first book, Morbidly Yours. I love Ivy’s writing and how she brings difficult topics to light in such a beautiful way. Just like Heart Strings, that one deserves all the praise as well.
Overall, bravo Ivy! I can not wait for your next book and look forward to kicking my feet and crying uncontrollably all over again.
Heart Strings hits shelves on August 12th!
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for providing an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
Thank you Putnam for the E-Arc, I love reading and supporting all Icy Fairbanks things!
Heart Strings definitely tugs your heart as you watch Cielo and Aiden fall back into each other after their 6 month fling break up. Forgiveness is a big part of this book and it's emphasized through their relationship and in other parts of the book.
This story takes place during Lark and Callums wedding planning and event. And given their duties as Best Man and Maid of Honor they're forced to work together and in place sparks fly.
Cielo is a healer, she is a survivor of acute lymphocytic leukemia and a striving oncologist. Her experience as a Latine (She's mixed, her dad is from Oaxaca, Mexico and her mom is white) with leukemia pushes her to strive to represent and spread awareness that lukemia has within the Latine community.
I'm gonna sidetrack a bit a talk about the Mexican representation that Cielo has. As I mentioned Cielo is mixed, and spent most of her time being raised by her white mother. The question of authenticity with representation is valid but it's important to remember that her experience with her Mexican culture looks different than others due to circumstances.
Personally, as a Mexicana who grew up in the U.S. I thought the author did a wonderful job with the representation. The author also used sensitivity readers to write Cielos character and that is also important to mention.
I was fully rooting for Cielo, in my eyes, she can do no wrong because my girl deserves ever ounce of joy the world has to give! She is a fighter and she struggles with letting people in. This is due to her own experience of how others treated her as she was going through chemo and that is so valid of her. Her relationship with her dad is something that she struggles with throughout the book, and that is something that hit close to home. Seeing her open herself up at the end was so important not only to her relationship with her dad but to her emotional healing.
This romance is swoony because Aidan sees Cielo for who she is and is well aware that she only deserves the best. He acknowledges his flaws and puts in the work to win Cielo back. He is in fact a yearner. He writes songs about her and is a committed man to her. The dual POV helps us see this in him and it only charms your heart even more! (He also whimpers and is into rope play).
I do wish we would have seen a little more flashback moments to the beginning parts of their relationship just to really understand the foundation of their relationship. You would have to read the first book to really get the bones of their relationship. Which I approve 1000% because Lark and Callum are so worth the read. Those are my BABIES!!!
Did I cry at the wedding scene? Yes, Yes I did.
This romance is swoony as it heartwarming! I hope that you guys enjoy this book as much as I did.
i'm sad to say I didn't enjoy this book like I did with morbidly yours. i wish their love story was presented better and introducted in the first book. I frankly did not connect much with either character and the constant lust factor really took me out of it. i'm looking forward to whatever ivy puts out next but this was a miss for me. thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Group Putnam for the ARC!
I was very excited to dive back into this world and see the romance of Lo and Aidan unfold. What I appreciated about this one was we skip forward in time. We are a couple of years ahead of last book and so much has changed. As much as I love a dual POV, I liked how Ivy wove the past and intricacies of Aidan and Lo's relationship in their current timeline. They were more reflections than having us in the actual moment. I am a SUCKER for a well done second chance, and this one was good! I kind of liked how there was still a spark but Aidan had low expectations of anything coming of them. And then a switch flipped and he was soo down bad for this woman he let get away. His muse that the whole world knows about minus her name. I liked how our big bad FMC Lo realized right away how much she had been aching for Aidan and his companionship in her life. As much as she was trying to push it away and lock him out. I liked the setting of their best friend's weddings. There is just something about a wedding- we all know it. I really enjoyed the pacing of this one and how they both realized and recognized what they had done wrong before. How much regret was mixed with hope. How much they both wanted a grand gesture to understand that they were on the same page. And OMG the spice! Rope play- I have only seen this in cowboy romances so thank you for opening my eyes to it even further in this one Ivy- IYKYK haha.
Lo is not going to talk about him. Aidan O'Toole. Her ex. The man who she fell for so hard and so fast. The man who walked away from her for a career. Yes there was more involved. She can see that now. And though the world worships him. She can't open herself up to him again. But how to do that while she is the maid of honor and he is the best man at their best friend's wedding? How can she continue to avoid these feelings when everything in this damn town reminds her of their time together- more so now that he is here with her. And he is giving her those lingering glances. Letting her know he feels it too. But how could anything happen between them when nothing about their circumstances has changed? He is still world famous, and she is in the middle of med school. But she can't continue to fight it anymore. So they decide they will indulge their bodies for the weekend of the wedding. But their actions say different. From staying in each others' beds to talking about all of the things in between. To finally recognizing what they mean to each other- which is so much more than a physical thing. Lo is prepared to try again. She is prepared to go the distance if that's what it takes. Because this weekend has showed her that she not only wants Aidan in her life, she NEEDS him there.
Aidan thought being famous would be amazing. And don't get him wrong it it. But was it worth letting the one good thing in his life go? Lo. The woman of his dreams. The woman who broke his heart by not giving them a chance once their circumstances changed. The woman who has inspired all of his songs and supported him all in the beginning. Now she won't even acknowledge him. But despite trying to ignore it and keep his head down, he can't help but do differently when she is around. Because he sees how she lingers when she looks at him. He sees how she lashes out a little toooo much. He sees that passion he so loves longing to be let out. But how can he do that when nothing has changed? When he wants to give her his heart and she wants his body for the weekend. If that is what it takes to get a foot in the door so be it. And she ignites him again. He is writing new music. Music he is PROUD of. All the while wondering what he needs to do to show her he is ALL in this. And then the answer becomes clear. Being famous and traveling the world alone doesn't mean the same as snuggling up to the love of your life after a long day. He just hopes she believes him. He thinks she does because things feel different this time.
I enjoyed being back in this world. I will say that I really wanted this to be a five star book but I wanted more. I can't pinpoint what of exactly. Maybe more of Aidan reminiscing on what went wrong. Maybe a little more build up. I did think some of the situations they found themselves in were quite hilarious. I also thought this book was tender. So tender. Lo had so much going on and was trying to do it all alone. Aidan helped her realize that yes she CAN do it alone but that doesn't mean she HAS to. Definitely recommend this one for a fun summer second chance! I liked getting to see our couple from book one too :)
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Heart Strings follows the second-chance love story between a medical student, Cielo, who thrives off her own independence and an up and coming musician, Aidan, who’s every song is about their whirlwind 6 month romance in Galway. Their flame is reignited from the forced proximity of their bestfriends’ wedding where they are appointed the roles of best man and maid of honour.
Plot/Romance The pacing of this book was PERFECTION. Ivy wasted no time jumping right into the plot with no unnecessary filler chapters. Angst is an important component when writing a second-chance romance and BOY did I feel it. It was very apparent the love and adoration that Cielo and Aidan had for each other. From their very first encounter within this book, I felt giddy and was highly anticipating every moment with them after. Despite me being a rampant hater for flashback scenes, I do believe that Cielo and Aidan’s story would’ve benefitted with at least two to three flashbacks. You would truly only know the details about their 6-month “fling” if you read the first book in the series. A few chapters referring back to that time would’ve definitely provided new readers with further relationship context.
The lack of third-act break up was GENEROUSLY appreciated! I am a supporter of its inclusion, but in this book especially: it definitely wasn’t needed. I adored the continuous communication between the both of them and how everything flowed so nicely. I love reading a romance where nothing “detrimental” needs to happen, sometimes a simple love story is ALL you need.
Characters I deeply resonated with Cielo’s character especially with her “I only need myself persona”. Yes, it may be an overdone archetype in the contemporary romance industry, BUT, I do love it every single time. Character development is ALWAYS important in any book, and I admired seeing Cielo go from consistently having her walls up, to then voicing her own opinions and accepting help from others. Her character voice was uniquely hers and I truly enjoyed reading from her perspective.
Aidan was a PERFECT love interest for Cielo. He was a constant reassurer and never once undermined her. It’s beautiful to read a contemporary romance where the man doesn’t have to do something “wrong” in order to grovel back. Like yes, I can appreciate a grovelling second-chance romance, but I also love to read a romance where the man is simply him and proves himself just by being him. The musician aspect was written perfectly, and never came across as corny. All of his songs just being about Cielo was just, UGH, so freaking cute and his character voice genuinely emphasised his admiration and appreciation for her.
Concluding Thoughts If you’re looking for a feel-good romance with great banter and no third-act break up scene, this is exactly up your alley. Cielo and Aidan are both loveable characters and the Galway setting perfect encapsulates this cozy, warm romance.
Thank you to penguin books for sending me an ARC copy — I will DEFINITELY be looking forward to Saorise’s book 🤭
Overall, 3 stars, this was a lot spicier than I expected. Usually, I adore second chance romance books, this story was good, not great, I read the book instead of feeling the book. I may need to check out the audiobook when it comes out, Aidan's accent may add half a star. The characters were good, but I wanted better character development. I'm all about a flawed main character, but Lo would've really benefited from therapy. She had some amazing qualities, she's hardworking, ambitious, loyal, but she also had so much trauma, cancer survivor, overbearing mother, absentee father, stress, etc. I wanted better conflict resolution with Lo and her dad. I liked Aidan and his commitment to supporting his family, that was so dang sweet and admirable.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for the ARC!
A second chance romance with no flashbacks?! THANK YOU.
The hearse scene completely caught me off guard, it was so unexpected and such a standout moment. The plot itself was a lot to take in at times, and honestly, I wanted to shake the FMC more than once. And the MMC? Let’s just say he could’ve used a bit more backbone.
What really pulled me in, though, was the web of interconnected characters from the earlier books. It gave the story extra depth and made the world feel even richer.
3.75 ⭐️- another second chance romance to add to my collection 😈
this book took me right back to Galway after finishing Morbidly Yours, and at this point I think I’m hyperfixating on Ireland. Sue me. But we get little time jump a few years in the future, a few years after Lo and Aidan called it quits after six months of dating when he moved to London to pursue his dream of being a musician. Forced to reunite for Callum and Lark’s upcoming wedding, Lo and Aidan are also forced to reckon with their lingering feelings years after their painful breakup.
both characters had their reasons to give up on their relationship, but a few years later, with the opportunity to reconcile, these two must decide whether it’s worth putting their hearts on the line one more time.
Lo was incredibly relatable in this book. A hyper-independent girlie who thinks she can do/fix anything herself, never wants to burden her loved ones by needing their help, and cutting off anyone who’s wronged her to try and preserve her heart that’s really quite fragile underneath the walls shes built. Aidan has to try and tear those walls down to get back the love of his life, and seeing these two grow and change and learn from the mistakes of their past was so gratifying.
I felt the writing improved a bit from Morbidly Yours, but I do still think there was some dialogue/moments that felt a bit disjointed/unrealistic. I decided to give this 3.75 stars but all around it was a really lovely book and I’m HOPING that miss Saoirse maybe gets a book next 👀
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group for the advance copy to review!
i was so excited for this, but it just wasn’t for me. this was definitely spicer than i expected. i needed more yearning rather than quickly being back together physically. at times, i felt like i was just reading the words and not feeling their chemistry and maybe that’s why i didn’t connect to the characters. lo having had cancer and gone through treatment did hit me because my mom did, so i understood her a bit more.
i will say i don’t always gravitate towards second chance romances so i was a bit nervous for this one. honestly, i think if this had dual timeline to see their past relationship, it could have been an added element for character growth and development. sadly, i wanted to love this but unfortunately it missed the mark for me. content warnings: cancer and anxiety
i do wanna share my fav line from lo because it did have me giggle: “we’ve spent ten minutes together and aidan’s already pressing all my buttons like buddy the elf in the empire state building elevator”
cielo (lo) doesn’t believe in second chances. she survived cancer at a young age which taught her life is “too short to spend time on someone who wronged you”. her ex, aidan is determined to show her life is too short for them to not be together. she moves to galway for med school and isn’t looking for love but when both are in the wedding party for her cousin (book one), they rekindle because forced proximity. can aidan convince lo they are meant to be?
tropes: irish singer-songwriter x american medical student, second chance, forced proximity, leukemia survivor fmc
Thank you NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam for allowing me to read this ARC! I am a big big fan of Morbidly Yours the first book in the series which is why I was super excited to read more about this little universe. Cielo “Lo” Valdez doesn’t believe in second chances, especially not after Aidan O’Toole broke her heart chasing his music dreams. But two years later, every song he sings is still about her, and fate throws them back together as best man and maid of honor at Lark and Callum's wedding. I'm disappointed to say that this one did not work out for me /: I honestly did not vibe with the main characters. Lo is quite annoying (sorry!!) and I was not enjoying reading the numerous meltdowns. In my opinion their conflict could have been fixed with good communication, like just sit down and talk guys ! I'll still be looking forward to anything Ivy writes, I'm sure the next book will be for me!
Sometimes I have to just shake my head when I remember this is only Ivy Fairbanks’ second book.

📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Lo and Aidan had a short romance that changed the trajectory of their lives before it fell apart. Now they’re back in the same room to celebrate a friends wedding. Lo is on her way to becoming a doctor. Aidan is on a break from a world tour. But their connection hasn’t dimmed in the two years they’ve spent apart.
🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: When I read Morbidly Yours last year I couldn’t believe it was a debut. It was fun and funky… featuring outside-of-the-box characters. I knew I’d like her second book, but Ivy Fairbanks blew me away again.
This book had so much emotion in it. I loved the tension and the pining… set on a backdrop of Ireland it felt so swoony. Lo is an FMC you can get behind - she’s fierce and unforgiving. Aidan will have you reading with heart eyes.
The spice in this one caught me off guard. There’s not a lot of it - it’s perfectly balanced if you ask me - but it was particularly smutty in the best ways. I love when contemporary romances take it to the next level.
I’m so down for book three in this series. This time I won’t have a single doubt as to how much I’ll love it.
Suddenly I'm back in Galway, Ireland and all is right in the world! 🤗
☘️ Irish Singer-Songwriter MMC 💚 American Medical Student FMC ☘️ Second Chance Romance 💚 Mutual Pining ☘️ Guy Who Whimpers 💚 Forced Proximity at an Irish Castle Wedding
Some may consider this a new romance story between Aidan, an Irish singer/songwriter, and Cielo, an American medical student. OR you can be like me and consider it a massively long epilogue to Morbidly Yours where we get to see my favorite man Callum finally marry the love of his life Lark... (do I sound crazy yet? 😅). I'm just kidding, but if you have read Morbidly Yours and loved it like I did it's certainly a perk that the backdrop of the story revolves around Callum and Lark's wedding with Aidan and Cielo serving as the best man and made of honor.
I love a wedding backdrop because of the absolute madness and chaos that always happens around weddings. And boy do Aidan and Cielo get into some hijinks that make for some pretty hilarious, and swoon worthy moments at times. The forced proximity, mixed with the usually second chance tension made for a pretty explosive reunion for this couple. Very fun for me!
I love that the humor and charm that I found so compelling in Morbidly Yours carried over to this story. There were so many comedic moments, like the roaming ventriloquist dummy 😅, that had me in a fit if giggles. And even the HOOKERS MADE A RETURN (iykyk from Morbidly Yours 🤣). So many really creative moments that had me wondering where on earth Ivy came up with some of these ideas (like that speaker scene 👀), but being grateful at the same time that I got to be on the receiving end of all this beautiful insanity.
I am very picky about second chance romances, but this one worked for me. The circumstances surrounding Aidan and Cielo's split two years prior, honestly for their characters at that point made sense. They hadn't even begun to work through their own insecurities, and that bled over into their relationship at the time. Watching them overcome those, and become even closer this second time around, made for an even sweeter love story that even I (the second chance romance hater 😅) could love.
Overall, this was fun! I will say this is not Morbidly Yours (nothing will ever compare unfortunately 🥲). But going in with that mindset really helped me enjoy this one. This was full of yearning and tension that will be sure to make you scream and swoon. Fast paced, with witty banter that makes it a fairly quick one to read. Getting to see more of Callum and Lark was certainly no hardship for me either 😏. A great addition to the Love in Galway series!
I will say though I am even more excited for Saoirse and her love interest's book next!! I can't wait for her to get all the love that she deserves 🥹. The glimpse we got at her man has me FERAL for more!! I can't wait!!
Thank you to Putnam for the ARC of this in exchange for my honest review! 🫶🏼
