Céline Marie Claudette Dion, OC, OQ is a Canadian singer, and occasional songwriter and actress. Born to a large, impoverished family in Charlemagne, Quebec, Dion emerged as a teen star in the French-speaking world after her manager and future husband René Angélil mortgaged his home to finance her first record. In 1990 she released the anglophone album Unison, establishing herself as a viable pop artist in North America and other English-speaking areas of the world.
Dion first gained international recognition in the 1980s after she won the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest. Following a series of French albums in the early 1980s, she signed on to Sony Records in 1986. During the 1990s, with the help of her husband, René Angélil, she achieved worldwide success with several English and French albums, becoming one of the most successful artists in pop music. However, in 1999, at the height of her success, Dion announced a temporary retirement from entertainment in order to start a family and spend time with her husband, who had been diagnosed with cancer. She returned to the music scene in 2002 and signed a four-year contract to perform nightly in a five-star theatrical show at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas.
Dion's music has been influenced by genres ranging from pop, soul, and rock to gospel and classical, and while her releases have often received mixed critical reception, she is renowned for her technically skilled and powerful vocals. In 2004, after amassing in excess of 175 million in album sales, she was presented with the Chopard Diamond Award from the World Music Awards show for becoming the "Best-selling Female Artist in the World". In April 2007 Sony BMG announced that Celine Dion had sold more than 200 million albums worldwide.
I bought the record, “Unison” in 1990. We French students knew of Céline Marie Claudette Dion earlier. Her name is “SAY-leen Dee-O”. N’s at the end of French words make a soupçon of sound. David Foster claimed he discovered her. She invited him to produce this English début! Amazingly, she started in 1981 at age 12!
I only knew she was the baby of 14 children and married her manager, René Angélil. Every page enthralled me, learning the unique story of a beloved Canadian. How lovely that her parents and all siblings sang or played instruments. Surprisingly private details regale us in Céline’s chatty personality, which Georges Hébert-Germain transcribed.
She described seducing René at age 18. He would not make the first move, thank God, being 44. Expecting a sex scene when I turned the page... désolé! The business of people’s pants stays in France!
Céline convinced me that even naturally lovely vocal chords need training and care. She took dance and English lessons. René watched for chances to perform live or on television. Chemotherapy sterilized him in 1998, making determination necessary too, to have René-Charles on January 25, 2001. Céline, je pense que je connais la significance de “LV”!
“Céline Dion: My Story, My Dream” was published on sabbatical in 2000, after the poignant 1997 song, “My Heart Will Go On” heightened her fame. I am sad Papa, Adhémar ascended in November 2003 because Nelson & Eddy were born October 23, 2010. René thankfully had until January 14, 2016 with them. Maman Thérèse lived to 2020, almost 93. I am glad my Canadian music project compelled me to read this illuminating biography.
I laughed, reading that Céline curbed ballads, arabesques & ornamentation in Europe! I prefer pop, rock, and straight notes! I had better find her French hit albums.
Let me start out by saying that I love the music that Celine Dion makes, and I have to say that she puts on an amazing show. However, this book kind of left me wanting.
The way this book read, I almost felt as though someone was trying to convince me that their life was a complete fairytale with only minor setbacks here and there. For the majority of the book I felt Celine did not truly acknowledge hardships that a new artist would face. Any sort of obstacle that presented itself was dismissed in just one sentence.
It wasn't until three-fourths of the way through that I really felt a true vulnerability in her words when she was describing the period where her husband's health was at risk. All that to say is that after reading this autobiography I have no doubt that Celine Dion is an extremely ambitious woman. I am also sure we will be priviledged to hear her music for years to come.
I’ve always enjoyed listening to singer Celine Dion, though I never really known too much about the singer before reading her booked published in 2000 called Celine Dion: My Story, My Dream.
Celine was the youngest in the Dion family of 14 children. She was as she put it in her book “An unplanned child”. Her youngest twin siblings and her are 6 years apart. Her mother was semi resentful of her due to the fact she thought she was done raising children. However, as seeing by reading the book both mother and daughter would share a special bond which would last for life.
Children in the Dion family were always listening to and playing music, it was a part of everyday life. Celine would sing with her sisters to music of Janis Joplin, Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand etc. Though some of the Dion brothers would form a band which would not last long, Celine was the one in the family whose singing career would go places.
Celine’s mother was thought that Celine had a voice and made sure she was given the chance to sing whenever possible. She would sing at siblings’ weddings, parties and for people in the music business. It would be in such a way as this that Rene Angelil would hear and soon become manager to Celine and her singing career.
Not being the best student in the world, Celine never gave too much in her studies. She was more forced on her singing and her wanting to be a singer. Her mother approved of Celine’s choices and helped her do what she needed to do in order to achieve her goal. Rene would help Celine do what was required by law for schooling.
Working with Rene, Celine grew an attachment to him and her mother was not too pleased. She thought it was just a typical crush but Celine knew it was more and it was serious. 26 year gap and twice divorce, Rene was not the man of Celine’s mother’s dreams. Though through all the hardships and good times, family and friends knew it was the real thing. On December 17, 1994 they finally tied the knot.
While married Celine would have to face hardships like Rene getting cancer, but with prayer and hope he pulled through. Also, Celine’s voice would go from time to time due to exhaustion. But like everything else with rest, self-discipline and moderation. And finally the most important impacted on her, becoming pregnant. The book ends with her becoming pregnant with Rene Charles jr.
A very heartwarming and touching book that made me laugh, cry and just really see more to Celine than just a singer with a great voice.
"She was born into a working-class Canadian family, the youngest of fourteen children. She gave her first performance standing on a kitchen table and dreamed of becoming a superstar. Few in her field can rival the phenomenal God-given abilities of Celine Dion. Fewer still have experienced the love, sorrow, accomplishments, and ecstasy that have shaped her remarkable life and carried her to the pinnacle of the entertainment world.
In 'Celine Dion: My Story, My Dream' Celine takes us backstage, on the road, into the recording studio, and behind the scenes to reveal the hard work that creates the magic. But her book, much more than a chronicle of early breakthroughs and professional high-water marks, of unforgettable encounters with the luminaries and legends of show business is, first and foremost, a story of love.
This talented and beautiful woman who has moved us with her singing now moves us with her words as she tells of growing up in a large, close-knit household fortified in its daily struggles by powerful bonds of heartfelt affection and the family tragedies their shared love enabled them to overcome. Here, also, Celine recounts warmly and intimately the storybook romance that remains her most enduring passion and greatest joy: Celine's marriage to Rene Angelil, her manager and soul mate. She teels of the devastating pain they both experienced when a doctor informed them that Rene had cancer, and how fighting the disease together helped strengthen their relationship. And she shares her joy, anxiety, and breathless anticipation of the impending fulfillment of their most cherished dream: parenthood.
A true story of courage, perserverance, dedication, and devotion - told with the wide-eyed honesty of someone who, though she has basked in the glowing adoration of millions of fans, has never lost touch with her working-class roots - Celine Dion: My Story, My Dream is for anyone who has ever wondered about the real person behind the magnificent voice. Touching and funny, fascinating and uplifting, it is an exquisitely detailed portrait of a remarkable woman who has never backed away from a challenge...even the most daunting challenges of the heart."
This is a rather boring look at a famous singer. While her music may inspire, her life is not to be idolized with her excessive desire for more and more. More fame, more money, more houses, more pampered lifestyles.
What was interesting is she comes from a musical family and her manager/lover/husband was involved in the music industry yet none of them knew vocal chords need care. When damage to her voice occurs, one hopes that it is a wake-up call but her story quickly gets right back into the more, more, more philosophy.
Overall, it leaves the reader with the idea one has just read about her itinerary (music and love life) instead of about her. There is a lot of superficial but not much depth.
My sister bought this book for me as a graduation present from high school after we went to the Celine Dion store in Vegas for like the umpteenth time (that is my most favorite store) (she got so annoyed with me and my mom actually laughed in the backseat listening to us threaten each other)...I actually felt scandalous reading this book the first time..but I love how humble Celine is...how she knows her talent is gift from God and not be taken for granted...she wanted to pave her own road and not have it paved for her...and I love that...You have to pave your own path if you want it to last...so don't be a stump
My idol, my dream, and inspiration. If you really want to delve deeper in to the lofe of this international star, then you need to read this book. Ever since I discovered this rare talent I was hooked and set. She has inspired me to be a better person and lifted me in times I felt sad. She is a remarkable woman and this is a incredible book.
Loved this book! Of course, I love Celine Dion anyway, but her book was awesome. I enjoyed learning about her journey to finding the man of her dreams, and learning about her career along the way. Would have loved to hear about how she came upon certian songs, like "I'm Alive" though.
OMG! I FLEW through this book. It was AMAZING! I loved every second of it! It is amazing to see Celine's life story by her perspective. It was beautiful, funny and entertaining. Definitely every REAL fan of Celine should read this book! You just can't put it down! One of my favorite books ever!
This was a beautiful story told by Celine. You get to really know the person she was, since the beginning of her career. I liked how she wrote about small details of her life, her feelings and emotions she and her husband shared..the things that we don't always find written..
I'm addicted to Celine Dion.I love this book so much it's very positive.Celine says that she was growed up in a big family and she was the littlest child and all her brothers and sisters took care of her.
Ever since I watched the extraordinary at times gut wrenching documentary in June I've been listening to Céline's music more. The Colour of My Love was probably the first CD I owned. My parents might've had another one of her albums that got swallowed up into my own collection at some point. I'd say the first time I heard Céline was on Beauty and the Beast but it could've been the Unison album or Céline. But I did enjoy her music. I vividly remember seeing Titanic in theaters in December 1997 and my mother and I seemed more anxious about when she would sing not knowing it would be as we were leaving the theater, than the fate of the characters. I mean I was a history nerd so I pretty much knew Jack was doomed the moment he set foot on that ship. A third class man? Although sadly they had a better chance than a third class child. But back to Céline. I read this book back when it came out. I was 19 maybe 20 and boy do I see her and her life differently now in my 40's. If I'm being honest her life seemed sad to me. Kind of like the Britney Spears song Lucky. She had everything and it should've been a happy life. Céline certainly thought so but reading this as a much older person it sort of depressed me. She made it clear she was an accident and ruined her mother's life. Imagine carrying that around. Yes she loved music but it felt like she pursued her career at the behest of her mother and later Rene. Speaking of Rene why do people think he's such a great and loving man? Does no one find the fact that he met her when she was not quite in her teens icky? Everyone justifies it by saying oh she went after him? And? He could say no it's wrong you are a child you should experience life and date people your own age. If you still feel the same way then maybe. I went down a rabbit hole about them and some things disturbed me. I heard Rene say in an interview he never proposed to a woman before Céline. Huh? A man twice divorced never proposed to either of his previous wives. I think he married the first cause she was pregnant so I get that but not the second one? It just seems weird. He also comes across as very controlling. Céline portrays it as him caring so much about her but again as an adult it reads way different. The scenes where she showed her developing love for him were equally disturbing. I mean most teenaged girls probably end up having crushes on men older than them but they grow out of them. Teenage girls are stupid I know I was at that age and I'm glad I didn't have any predatory men around me. It was also sad that she never seemed to have much time to just rest and enjoy life. Even in her documentary she tells her sons that she's been around the world but never really seen anything. I get it was a dream whether it was actually her dream or that of her mother and Rene that she took on out of guilt for being born but she seems like a kind and genuine person who deserves some peace and happiness. It was interesting to see signs of what could be the beginning of her illness pop up although it could be just voice strain and now I know where she got the name of the other twin Eddy from. I knew Nelson is Nelson Mandela and now I know Eddy was her first song writer who she was very close to. It ends with her expecting Rene Charles who we now see appears a loving protective son who comes with her and watches over her during her rare public appearances including her beautiful performance at the Paris Olympics. I am almost sorry I read this again as it just made me feel sad for her. I truly do wish her health and happiness in her life and it felt like she glossed over or made events in her life seem better and happier than they were but who knows maybe her life really was sunshine and rainbows back then.
I have loved Celine Dion since I was a little girl. I have been in love with her voice and her music for as long as I can remember. Celine mentions in her biography that its tricky when you meet your idols because things can go south so fast. I have never met Celine Dion, but I feel like I know her better though her biography. I don’t think I like her any less, but I will say that she seems more like a real person to me now (as opposed to Celine Dion, idol). I like that she seems more real to me now. So I guess that means that I liked this biography. And I did but I didn’t love it. Based on everything I knew about Celine before reading her biography and everything I now know about her from reading it, I know that Rene Angelil is super duper important to her. Why wouldn’t he be? But I felt that this biography was too centered around Rene and not enough about Celine and the music, or her family, or her process. I feel like she wants to take us on the magical, romantic, fairytale love between she and Rene, but their relationship didn't read like that to me. There is background information, but it is very heavy Rene. I like the part where she talks about her "singing robot" and "the honeymoon period with songs." That is all very interesting and real. I also like the parts where she talks about her secret rituals and her relationship with her Mom. I wish there was more of all of that and a lot less of the Rene romance. I also liked the parts about her musical training and how she basically had to relearn to sing when the doctor told her to do those exercises and that it would take 3 to 5 years for her to hear/see the improvements. One thing I didn't realize was how sheltered Celine's life has been. She started singing with Rene when she was 12 and soon after that, he had completely taken over her life, meaning she didn't have to make any decisions. She went where she was told to go and everything was always taken care of for her. I had no idea that she was so sheltered. She mentions how she is not someone who dwells on the past, she only looks forward. As I read that, I thought to myself how envious I am of that. And I realized that she can be that way because of how sheltered she is. While she knows and understands the pain of losing people like her niece Karine, she doesn't know the pain of a breakup, or losing a friend, etc. It is interesting. Overall, if you are a Celine fan, you will like this book. You may not love it, but you will like it.
I grew up almost obsessed with Celine Dion because my parents were. They have her CD and also the recordings of her concert in Las Vegas of her show called A New Day and often played it on repeat. Reading this made me see her more as a normal humble person rather than just an untouchable singer celebrity diva that I used to view her before as. My favorite part of this book is when she mentions that David Foster has a song called All By My Self for Celine to sing. But David said that he wanted her to sing the last part of the song higher in the key of F and hold it for several measures because he had changed the orchestra. Celine was doubtful of this change and her capabilities until David said if she can’t do it, it’s okay because he can always ask Whitney Houston to sing it instead. And that is all he had to say to make Celine want to prove that she too can reach the note and sing that song. Yeahhhh imagine if that song was sung by Whitney instead! I mean obviously it would sound phenomenal! But I’m glad that song belongs to Celine because she sung the song so beautifully and I can’t imagine anyone else singing it as good and emotional as she does. You get meeeee like Celine has her own vibe and aura and just you know SHE NAILED THE NOTE! YASSS QUEEN!
I love Celine Dion. I love her personality, her look on life, her love for René, her tone and especially her songs. My friends laugh at me when I tell them but I don't care and actually, they secretly like her too. This I know.
However, I found this book quite boring to be honest. I hate to say it but it's true (for me anyway). I get her love for René, I admire her for it and I wish I could find a girl who loved me as much as she loves him but I don't need to hear about it on every other page and it wasn't just this. The whole book was a bit repetitive and I was willing the end to come (of the book, not of me. It wasn't that bad!). That surprised me a bit because I thought it would be far more exciting. I know this particular biography only goes up to the year 2000, and we all know what happens in between, but it was just, 'I made a song here then did a concert here then recorded in a studio over there' ad nauseum and I really wanted more. It's such a shame but it won't stop me loving this woman and her music. I'm not sure if I'll read another of her books though.
I love Celine’s music and voice, an amazing entertainer and vocalist. She has to be one of the best singers of our generation, and almost everyone already knows that. However, her story is one that doesn’t really ring a bell, probably due to her private life it seems that most of us have never heard her story before. In this book, Celine focused more on life after getting discovered and getting signed. It seemed like it was an easy road for her to get discovered and then get signed to a record label with the way it was written in the first few chapters. She spoke much about her love life, and finally marrying her manager, René Angélil. She also touched on her struggles with conceiving. This book was interesting but focused much on life after discovery and her road to building up her career to who she has become now, a singer and an icon. From this book, Celine appears to be a humble, fortunate, talented singer who works hard for her art, herself, her family, and her friends.
I've always been a fan of Celine Dion. She's always been a respectful artist with a voice like no other.
The first chapters of the book are interesting, delightful and quite enjoyable. She tells about her childhood, her big loving family, her dreams and ambitions but as the story moves on to her musical career and love story with René Angélil, that's when the story gets dull. These chapters reveals Celine as immature and naive with cares and thinks about nothing but her life with René. I was even left very confused at the end of this memoir because I didn't get a full insight into Celine -the person nor the artist- it felt more like a book about René.
Although, I'll always love and respect Celine Dion the amazing artist but her personality -judging from her book- seems like the kind of woman that would only conversate with you about herself and her uninteresting love story.
Overall, unsatisfying memoir but good enough if you want to read about Celine from Celine herself.
I wanted to read this book since I am a fan of Celine Dion. It was interesting to read about her early years. She was one of 14 children and came from a musical inclined family. I loved reading about her journey to success due to her strong determination and the guidance and determination of her manager, Rene Angelil, who became the love of her life. In this autobiography, she has conveyed her thoughts and emotions throughout her journey and it wasn't an easy one. I found her book to be beautiful and inspiring. Obviously , since this book was published in 2001, the rest of her career and life with Rene and family would have to be read in another book.
I read this as a very casual fan of Celine's, more a fan of her persona than her music.
This is really the story of a girl (youngest of a VERY big family) who can sing, falls in love with her manager René Angélil when she's a teenager, and marries him when she's 26 (which coincidentally is how old Angélil was when she was born). Celine's been famous most of her life. This book was released years before Angélil died from a heart attack (he had previous cardiac problems, and recurring throat cancer).
Recommended for fans ONLY, both hardcore and casual.
I "found" a perfect singer and lover, devoted to her husband and her voice. I think she deserves to be very rich because she's really the best. The book didn't touch my soul, I can not say I know her better now, I knew she is a perfectionist and a romantic woman but I usually expect more from a biography: life lessons, interesting facts and thoughts.
I read this for a project I did my Senior year. Maybe even my Senior Project? I learned a lot about what you should a should not do in the vocal world. Very interesting and beneficial to me. Liked this book a lot.
It was ok. I like autobiographies were it feels like the author is talking to you. And this book does that but Celine's "voice" is very childlike and you notice it throughout the tone of this book. A very immaturely written book.
Celine Dion is so passionate and lively. I think it might be the French coming out in her. She underwent IVF, and I really appreciate her attitude about it.
