House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J. Maas❤️🔥🧚🦇⚔️
Power. Secrets. War. And a battle for survival that will change everything.
This book grabbed me by the throat from chapter one and did not let go. The Graphic Audio edition? Next level. It felt like stepping straight into the chaos, magic, heartbreak, and sheer badassery of Crescent City. The sound effects, music, and full cast made it feel like I was living the story instead of just listening to it. I was in it—heart racing, eyes wide, emotions on high. I laughed, I gasped, I yelled, I may have cried (okay, I did cry).
Bryce’s journey in this one is intense. She’s dropped into an entirely new world, facing unimaginable odds, and her growth—both fierce and vulnerable—is some of the best I’ve seen from her. The reveals? Devastating. The character arcs? Incredible. There were moments I had to pause just to process the weight of what was happening. It’s SJM at her most intense.
That said, I have complicated feelings about the ending. The first third was phenomenal—gripping, well-paced, and emotionally charged. I was captivated. But as the final chapters unfolded, something faltered. The story and plot began feeling sluggish, and the conclusion rushed. It didn’t quite match the scale of what came before. It wasn’t bad—but it lacked the impact I was hoping for. I expected something more explosive, more unforgettable.
Still, this book is a breathtaking continuation of the series and an experience I won’t soon forget. It may not have landed every note perfectly, but the journey? Absolutely worth it.
OMG this was too good! This is the best SJM series I've read so far. Hands down. The ACOTAR integration was fantastic! I'm curious as to how this series compares to Throne Of Glass. The graphic audio for that series has been delayed a bunch so I'll get to it when it finishes getting released through Graphic Audio.
Overall the story was great! The loose ends, however, were mean. Not as mean as I was expecting it to be, but still very much not fun. There's too much in the air I NEED to know what's next!!!
I did not expect to read through this whole series again so quickly but I’m glad I did. This whole series was brilliantly done, I really enjoyed each and every voice actor, even the extra random few ones that appeared for a line or two.
The background music made so many scenes sooo much more dramatic, in a good way. I genuinely enjoyed.
This was by far my favorite book in the series! Sarah J did her thing with this! What I loved most about Crescent City is how much character development there was. Not just main character development like in ACOTAR, but multiple characters. They all grew and became better versions of themselves. There was also so many different parts of the book occurring at the same time which made it even more interesting. This was definitely a great way to cap off this series! 10/10!
I freaking love how this trilogy ended. I think everything came together in a neat little bow, and everyone got their redemption or their happy ending. Honestly my least favorite part was the crossover storyline with ACOTAR, but it kept leading me to believe we might actually get to see characters from Throne of Glass, which I would have enjoyed WAY more. Sure there were nods to “the stag” and “the world of the shifters”, but come on we literally set foot in ACOTAR but can’t even get a name drop for TOG?

I mostly powered through the earlier books in this series for the ACOTAR crossover if I’m being honest 😬
That said, this final book…. Easily my favorite of the bunch! It actually wrapped up nicely and for the first time, I found myself truly rooting for Bryce, I’m genuinely curious where she goes next, I hope Bryce and Nesta cross paths again.
This book also made me like Nesta more I’m curious to see where the ACOTAR series takes her with what she now has in her possession….
My usual SJM gripes persist- use of the word mate, smelling people, balls tightening, general cringe, and of course plot twists that are quite the leap- but I will say I love her commitment to a) the power of friendship b) PTSD being a huge bitch and c) horniness. I had fun, 3.5 rounded up lol
I feel like I took too long to finish this one but overall I definitely liked this book over the 2nd book. God that was a slog, like nothing happened. Maas has this really weird tendency to write Book 1 as if its a standalone and then write book 2-3 and maybe onward like they're part of the series. Like obviously book 2 was a lead up to 3 but it was so boring, but obviously you can't have 3 without context of 2.
I was happy for the action and things actually happening and moving forward. I still think this series suffers from way too many characters but in some cases they were needed and some they weren't. Sometimes characters are just meant for drama and not really worth remembering I guess. But overall it was a great time and the graphic audio did help with the emersion and captivation of it all.
As I made earlier comments... Bryce does have some balls... It's almost laughable at times. Where do you get the audacity and the confidence to ask someone for a favour. Like robbing someone, and then later going back and asking them for $10 even though they robbed you. Like why should anyone trust you.
While I was near the end, it came to me that... thank god that books have happy endings - at least most of them? Real life is depressing enough and we need somewhere to go to escape that and to know that there are happy endings possible when our lives are maybe not that great. So thank god for happy endings in most books lol
I wonder what the next series will be that pulls me in the way this does. Apparently Fourth Wing is losing a lot of people :P and the author is taking a break for her mental health which is totally fair. For now time to catch up with the rest of the TBR.
So much happens in this second half that I got put off it. Then during the wrap up of the story there’s a cross over from her other books that I will never read and feels so pointless to have in here plus plot points that are just dropped, what’s happening here????

I really enjoyed reading these books and at first was a bit scared to start listening to them as well, considering I build up the characters in my head already. But the voice actors Graphic Audio did an amazing job!
Light it up! ⭐️ highly recommend the dramatized audio for all these books. Absolutely loved crescent city and have officially finished the massverse 😭.
Obsessed! All three are amazing. Obviously there's a LOT to unpack and this really expanded the Massverse. I'm so curious to see if there is going to be a next book or if this stays a trilogy.
The audio production was top notch. Graphic Audio has nicely progressed from their ACOTAR books where it was mostly unnecessarily loud foot steps (although there is still too many footstep SFX for this video/audio editor).
In general, book 3 had too many characters. Most of their POV didn’t add anything unique to the story. And there are little consequences to these assholes’ actions. Very disappointed with this conclusion.
If you’re going to do an audiobook that has graphic audio available, ALWAYS pick graphic audio!
This is my second “re-read” of CC and I 100% enjoyed it more than the last time I read it. Last time I read it, I tandemed between the physical book and normal audiobook, which was so monotone it made me want to pull my hair out.
Anyway, I gave it a second chance and completely fell in love! Still not my fav SJM series but it still hit the spot.
I really enjoyed this ending - it was way easier to follow than the first half & I felt like all the storylines converged & concluded in a really neat way. SJM remains one of the queens of romantasy in my book with this one!
No spoilers here - just my opinion 😊. This is my general review of the 3 book graphic audio of the Crescent City series. I really enjoyed the story line, characters, and sense of humor throughout the book. If you love a good romantacy, this one fits the bill. I have listened to many audiobooks lately (for example, I can hear the story while multi-tasking), but this is my first Graphic Audio (“A movie in your mind” - love the slogan!) series. Reading is usually a movie in my mind, but Graphic Audio takes it to a new level. The case of different actors reading the book was great, and it was clear to me which characters were speaking. Of all of the audiobooks I have listened to, this was the first one with such steamy sex, that I thought I was listening to a porno movie at times, complete with oohs, ahhs, and groans. The background music added to that feeling. 😆. Graphic audio = double meaning (LOL). Just a caution for listeners and readers alike: if you are sensitive to hearing the F-word, you will need to just get used to it, or don’t read/ listen to this. While I don’t consider myself a prude, I don’t think it’s necessary to use it as often and freely as SJM does in this book. I think I became numb to it after the first book 😵💫. And, because I was wondering how any times the word was used in the books, out of curiosity, I googled it, and did find an answer (correct or not, I can’t verify) regarding the first two books in the series. The answer on Reddit is basically an average of 510 times per book 🫣. May be a lot for some, but not for others. But I digress. Would I recommend this series? Yes. And, I may even read the book version in the future to see if I missed anything. WilI I listen to another Graphic Audio production? Yes - even with the steamy scenes. 😉
House of Flame and Shadow, the third instalment in the Crescent City series, was an entertaining but chaotic rollercoaster. Combining urban fantasy with an epic plot and ambitious world building, this book takes the world of Crescent City to a new level.
Picking up immediately after the cliffhanger of House of Sky and Breath, the story plunges into action, politics, and betrayal. It sure was an entertaining read, but also chaotic and long-winded. Not every plot twist or reveal was logical or believable, but the continuous change in perspective and the cliffhangers between the perspectives kept me interested in the story. The ending was over the top but satisfying.
Character development in House of Flame and Shadow fell flat for me. Bryce became unlikeable due to her arrogance, rudeness, and poor decision making. I was less invested in her romance with Hunt or with her overall well-being. I was much more interested in Ruhn and Lydia, who had a fascinating dynamic due to Lydia’s past, loyalties and motives.
The worldbuilding is expansive and ambitious. I admired the lore and history woven into the plot. The multiverse concept adds intrigue and scale, though at times the execution felt chaotic. Compared to other epic fantasy authors, Maas’s worldbuilding lacks a certain finesse, but it is still undeniably immersive.
In conclusion, House of Flame and Shadow is an emotional, action-packed, and multiverse-expanding book. While I appreciated the scope and ambition, I missed the charm and consistency of Maas’s earlier work.
It's hard to rate this book. 1st, I'll pass on the whole dramatized reading again. It was a bit much. 2nd. The Crescent City and ACOTAR series just don't compare to the TOG series of this world. Love the crossovers. 3rd, if there was going to be SO much brought into this series in this book, it should not have been the last book.
I still don't get what role Ariadne played in this book. She wasn't necessary and why bring her into Therion's final scene? Why build up Therion and his new wife only to have her just boot him, him go look for her and then Ari steps in and have one line. That wraps up nothing! What happened when Bryce leveled up? Did she have any elemental magic that made her even more powerful? Midgard is an entire planet, how did Bryce abolish all Royal Fae families on the entire planet?
There was too much brought into the wrap up that was never part of the story, which is just superfluous and confusing.
I was going with the flow until all the wrap up. I didn't think the final battle was too weak either. But yeah, the last 30 mins, dropped the rating for me.

Sad the series has ended on this lull of a book compared to the first. I did enjoy this but more as background noise
For the first time ever. I increased the speed of the graphic audio. I KNOW!! Sacrilege. But I don’t think I could have gotten through it other wise
I didn’t enjoy half the POV’s. Lidia was my favourite. Bryce, Hunt, and Ruhn were okay. Everything else was eh. And Ithan made me want to skip the chapter. The jumps between perspectives were inconsistent and annoying. You go through so many and you’d listen to 1 min of an exciting part so you remember they exist, then go back to the boring parts
I don’t like Ithan at all. He has such a saviour complex and I just don’t like his character. Also don’t like Fury or Juniper. Am I meant to?
The ending was good and exciting finding out how it is all going to go down, but I don’t think it was worth all those words and pages to get to that point
*Spoilers below*
What is the point of Sigrid? Ithan has such a passion to save her just because she’s a wolf? She is such a wasted character. She was only there to make Ithan prime. Reluctantly
Best part was Lidia and Ruhn. Mainly Lidia. Love her journey and her story
5🌟 for the graphic audio production, 4ish, give or take, 🌟 for the story.
I still have my issues with how Bryce deals with Hunt in this book. She does not seem to actually understand his trauma and still thinks they went through something comparable. When he wants to kill Celestina and he thinks that he hates her… honestly I get it. I feel like their relationship is falling a little short for me, and it’s mostly on Bryce’s side. Still a huge Hunt Athalar fan.
I feel like Bryce is just urban fantasy Aelin but not as badass. I think there’s too many similarities that SJM is trying to make between the two, and I just don’t think it works. Bryce is a totally different character with a completely different background. She should have her own strengths and flaws.
Tharion is okay but still, he just makes *choices*. I love Sathia though so I want to see more of her.
Lidia is amazing, and I love her and Ruhn. I want much more of Lidia.
I completely loved HOEAB and I just feel like unfortunately, the way this part of the story concluded wasn’t the greatest for me.
MY MIND IS BLOWN AWAY!! The character growth, the defiance and resilience in every single one of the character’s hearts, I am completely in shock. Bryce & Hunt finally found their way back to each other after Bryce’s interesting journey to another world. She finally got the answers she needed, which I absolutely loved her journey doing so!! The quests of the other characters like Lidia, Ruhn, Ithan, Hypaxia, and Tharion had be biting my lip the whole time in worry!! Everything was so unpredictable which I absolutely loved about reading! There were so many moments that had me crying & wondering what was going to happen. I absolutely loved the ending of Bryce & Hunt’s story as they finally found peace away from the Asteri. God, I’m gonna miss these characters so much, like I absolutely devoured these audiobooks in like 6 days while working & doing school work! Sarah really knows how to connect her stories together & I’m so excited to see what she has in store for us!
I know it's not the authors style to kill off main characters, but it's hard to worry for a character when you know they aren't actually going to die. Bryce sacrifices herself into the black hole, but like of course she isn't going to die. The writing makes it high stakes, but we know it ain't, so that's just something I wish was different, like don't be afraid to kill someone for plot lol, whatever.
Any who, I probably enjoyed this book the most of the 3. Love Lydia and every scene she was in. I enjoyed the characters from Hell and how Hunt was 'made'.
Also, when Bryce went to get the mask from Nesta, you're telling me Rhys was just slowly making his way to the portal? Couldn't he just show up and instantly?
I liked all of the different houses and characters, but things just fall into place too perfectly.

Wow! I'm blown away by the creativity of Sarah J. Maas and her world building. And thankful she provides plenty of hints to the back story.
I had the joy of listening to part 1 of book 1 and now part 2 of book 3. I guess I need to read the entire series, which ends here in a blood-thirsty, powerful finale.!!!
Bryce Quinlan, Hunt, and all the rest team up to fight evil, to restore 'good' and wrest Midgard from the Asteri. What more can I say, but listen if you love dramatization, swash-buckling, knee-trembling sex, and more. Graphic Audio http://www.graphicaudio.net brings all that to the 'movie in your mind'.
