Chasing Headlines

Rate this book
They’re chasing the same dream. Too bad they’re not on the same team...

After a heated outburst ruins his major league prospects, Breslin Cooper lands at Texas State Tech with a probation sentence and a bad rep. With obligatory therapy, campus rules, and scouts steering clear, his baseball career is on the thinnest of thin ice–in a West Texas desert.

Olivia "Liv" Milline lives and breathes the game—but thanks to her overprotective baseball-exec father, she’s banned from pursuing her dream of becoming a baseball scout.

Her workaround? Becoming a sports reporter on campus, and chasing stories behind the scenes.

When Liv sets her sights on the notoriously moody, attractive Breslin as her next big story, things spiral fast. He’s not talking, and she’s not backing down. But when trouble threatens his probation and scholarship, Breslin might need Liv more than he wants to admit.

Enemies? Check. Chemistry? Explosive. A headline-worthy mess in the making? Absolutely.

[Book One of a steamy new series. No cliffhanger—but plenty of sass, angst, and unresolved tension waiting to ignite in Book Two.]

This book was such a fun sports romance read while also hitting on some tough issues. It is written in dual POV from Breslin and Olivia. Olivia is funny and extremely entertaining. Breslin is broody and at times mean but as the book goes on we learn about Breslin’s inner struggles. I feel the author did a great job portraying male mental health struggles.
I loved all the side characters and the found family trope was on point.
I loved watching their relationship grow. I can’t wait for book 2!

If you're a fan of slow-burn romance that keeps you hungry for more, Chasing Headlines is a must-read. This novel masterfully builds tension between its leads, delivering a compelling enemies-to-lovers storyline with a fresh and satisfying feel. It’s the kind of book that leaves you desperate for the next installment, and trust me—I’m counting down the days until the sequel!

The story centers on a fiercely determined female main character (FMC) pursuing an unconventional career path in the male-dominated world of baseball scout while studying as a journalist in the interim, landing her in some hot water. I loved how her passion and drive were central to the plot, making her a relatable and inspiring protagonist. However, I did wish there was a bit more backstory explaining why everyone seemed so opposed to her career choice. It wasn’t entirely clear, though maybe that’s just me (a non-sports person unless there’s a romance novel involved).

One of the standout moments for me—and I promise, no spoilers—was the hilarious living room scene involving a bra. It’s a perfect example of the sharp, witty writing that makes this book so much fun to read. Moments like these showcase the humor and heart that balance the story's emotional depth and romantic tension.

Chasing Headlines is a delightful read with a cast of characters you’ll root for and a romance that simmers until it boils over in the best way possible. The twist in the enemies-to-lovers trope is refreshing and left me with just one complaint: the excruciating wait for the next book.

Highly recommended for fans of romantic tension, laugh-out-loud moments, and strong, determined heroines. This one’s a winner.

An emotionally charged read with beautifully written characters baseballer Breslin and college reporter Olivia, they both attend the same college and both baseball crazy. Breslin was on track to the majors until he had a run in with the press after a comment about his Mother dying by the journalist made him see red, as a result he has copped community service hours, as well as having to prove himself back down at freshman college level, he is an angry, shell of himself. Olivia or Liv to her friends is from a baseball family, he brother was a baseball star and her father made money and is on boards of baseball teams, her greatest dream is to be a baseball scout, he father has a hard and fast rule, no baseball for Liv!!
Breslin and Liv struck sparks off each other right from the start but their chemistry was off the charts and no matter how much they fought there was that undercurrent of magic between them.
The story was gripping and I couldn’t put it down once I started they experienced pain, loss, grief frustration and anger but didn’t get any real compassion or support.

If you're looking for an enemies-to-lovers sports romance with witty banter, look no further!

Read if you like:
✨️ enemies to lovers
✨️ a lot of banter
✨️ forced proximity
✨️ fake dating
✨️ small town
✨️ mental health rep
✨️ found family

In Chasing Headlines we follow Breslin and Olivia (or Coop and Liv if you will). Both are chasing their baseball dreams; Breslin as a player, Olivia as a scout. Basically they both have to deal with unsupportive families on top of some other shit.

We all know by now that Jenn is an amazing writer. She's very good at writing stories that read smooth and dig a little deeper. While her first full-length novel had one POV, this one has two, giving us more insight into both our main characters. I am so glad she wrote both POVs this time, as you could really see both character's development clearly.

The banter between Liv and Coop was amazing, as expected. Seeing these start out as two stubborn idjits, deal with their issues, and see self growth, was wonderful. I'm always a fan of a good mental health rep too. It's clear this author is too, as her previous novel included a war vet and this time Breslin goes to therapy.

Besides our main charachters, there are a bunch of additional interesting people (Jiminez, Hilda, Mrs. P, ...) but a special shout out goes to Dotty. That sassy old woman has earned a place in my heart.

Can we also take a moment to commend Jenn's knowledge. She included baseball, hacking and Spanish. 👏

I cannot wait to see what's next for Breslin and Olivia!

In Chasing Headlines we have Breslin (or coop) and Olivia. Breslin is a baseball player and Olivia is pursuing her dreams of becoming a scout while studying as a journalist in the interim. This is a dual pov, which i love because you can see both characters develop and grow. This was my first book i read by Jen and I was genuinely impressed by her writing. The banter between liv and coop was amazing i found myself engaged in this book, never wanting to put it down.

Tropes included :
🦋 enemies to lovers
🦋 a lot of banter
🦋 forced proximity
🦋 fake dating
🦋 slow burn
🦋 small town
🦋 mental health rep
🦋 found family

loved this book.

in chasing headlines we follow breslin and olivia, who both are dreaming of building a career around baseball.

breslin cooper just joined the university’s baseball team after a bit of a fiasco with a reporter at his old team. he’s stubborn, grumpy and a bit off a pain in the ass to anyone who is in the pleasure of his company.

olivia milline has been dreaming of baseball for as long as she can remember, both her father and her brother their lives are built around the sport after all. but since her father’s ‘no baseball for olivia’ regulation any connection to the sport is off limits, at least as far as her father is concerned.

they meet, they flirt, they meet again, breslin finds out olivia is the school’s new baseball reporter and then decides he wants nothing to do with her.

if only it was that easy right? they keep meeting each other and the chemistry they have is undeniable, even though they try to deny having any connection to one another to anyone who is willing listen.

when something happens they can’t seem to find their way out of they lie and say they are a couple, but how long can they convince themselves they are pretending? and how long will it take until all the lies start to blur?

this book got me hooked right from the beginning, i got sucked right into their lives and couldn’t stop reading even if i wanted to. it’s an easy read that does contain some heavy topics, but they are talked about realistically and carefully.

the only negative feedback i can give is that the book isn’t long enough!! i loved reading breslin and olivia’s story but wished i could’ve read more about them being a couple.

thank you for this arc

ARC Review

I recently finished *Chasing Headlines*, and it was quite the emotional journey! The story follows Breslin Cooper, whose major league dreams are shattered after a public incident, leading him to college baseball at Texas State Tech. Meanwhile, Liv Milline, who dreams of becoming a baseball scout, faces her own challenges, especially her father's strict rules against her involvement in the sport.

The chemistry between Breslin and Liv is electric, even if Breslin initially responds to her with irritation and attraction. I loved watching Liv's determination to break through Breslin's emotional barriers while he grapples with grief and pressure. Their dynamic kept me engaged and interested to finish, and I found myself rooting for them as they navigated their personal struggles.

However, I did find the pacing a bit slow at times, making it feel longer than necessary. Despite that, I adored both characters and appreciated their growth throughout the story.

Overall, *Chasing Headlines* offers a delightful blend of sports, romance, and personal discovery. If you're a fan of baseball romances, this book is definitely worth a read! I’ll be revisiting it, especially as I explore more in this genre.

Chasing Headlines is a pitch-perfect blend of sports drama and heartfelt romance, with fully realized characters and a plot that keeps you invested from start to finish. J Rose Black’s evocative writing and deep understanding of baseball bring the story to life, while the emotional core of Breslin and Liv’s relationship ensures it resonates far beyond the diamond. Whether you’re a fan of baseball or simply a lover of compelling storytelling, this novel is a home run.

2 stars! ⭐️ Huge thanks to J. Rose Black & BookSirens for the ARC! 💌

WHEW. okay.
So… I really tried with this one.
Like really really.
But damn, it almost dragged me into a reading slump and I am not okay with that.

This book was SO. FREAKING. LONG.
Like, it could’ve been cut down by at least 150 pages and I wouldn’t have missed a single thing. There was just... so much filler. Endless inner monologues, repetitive scenes, and drawn-out drama that didn't need to be that deep.

And the pacing?? Painfully slow.
Took me 3 days to finish—three!! You know I devour books like candy, so for me? That’s a red flag right there.

Let’s talk about the characters:
Insufferable.
I wish I was exaggerating. Olivia? I wanted to like her, I really did. But girl was dramatic AF and lowkey annoying.
Breslin? He was fine, I guess, but not enough to carry the story. Their romance was so background I almost forgot it was supposed to be a romance. Like, if I'm here for enemies-to-lovers, GIVE ME THE LOVERS PART.

And where. was. the. spice.
I’m not even a spice-obsessed reader, but when you hint at it constantly in dreams and inner thoughts and never deliver IN REAL LIFE??? Why even tease me like that?!
It’s not YA. It’s not closed-door. So why so dry?? At least give us something to work with. 🌶️

Also... I do not care about baseball enough to read 500+ pages of it. The whole plot felt more like “Baseball and Feelings” than a romance novel.
Not what I signed up for.

And the ending?? RUSHED AS HELL.
I trudged through all those pages and then it just… ends? Like bam, story over, no satisfying payoff. Nah, not cool.

Look, I know some people loved this one, and I can see why if you’re a baseball buff or love super slow burns. But for me? The vibes were off.
Won’t be continuing the series, and honestly?
I’m kinda mad I didn’t DNF.

Final thoughts?
Too long. Too slow. Too bland.
Dottie was cool, though—probably the only character I genuinely liked. The rest? Just not for me.

Rating: 2 stars
Spice: 0.5/5 (and that 0.5 is generous tbh)
Frustration levels: Off the charts

Read at your own risk.

Welcome to Vanquer, Texas and Texas State Tech where the Strikers' blood, sweat, and tears on the diamond are matched by the challenges of life off the field. Breslin Cooper and Liv Milline battle their demons and each other as they evolve and revolve around each other, learning what it is to fight through thick and thin.

This novel captures the raw grit of West Texas, the intensity of college sports, and the tender chaos of young adulthood. Cooper's journey is compelling—a tale of ambition, redemption, and unexpected connections. We understand Liv’s frustrated dreams. The banter and chemistry between them brings heart to the drama. Liv’s sharp wit as a school reporter and Breslin’s determination make for an unforgettable pairing.

The novel is full of heart and a vivid sense of place. It’s a story about more than baseball—it’s about chasing dreams, navigating relationships, and finding where you truly belong.

If you’re looking for a story that will make you cheer, laugh, and maybe tear up a little, "Chasing Headlines" is a must-read. Welcome to Vanquer, Texas—you won’t want to leave!

I really enjoyed this book, it was a fun sports romance with some depth. Breslin was going through a lot and stuck inside his own perspective which was really relatable and through the course of the story you get to see him start to reconnect. Olivia was interesting as well but I kind of wish we got to see more of her interactions with her dad as he was a figure that had so much impact on her life but I did really enjoy her interactions with the coaches and team.

The pair of them definitely had chemistry and watching them slowly pull closer together and work things out was really fun. I would definitely love to spend way more time with the pair of them and find out what comes next in their stories.

I read an arc of this book through Hidden Gems

I absolutely love this book. Olivia, having grown up in a pro baseball family, Is off to college and dreams of being a baseball scout. Breslin Cooper, or Coop, is one of the top athletes heading into college for baseball but also mourning the passing of his mother, but after poor timing on a reporters part, he now hates reporters. Liv gets a job with the college paper covering baseball and her longtime crush, Coop, who ends up be an insufferable ass.

The book is not just an enemies to lovers romance but tackles realistically grief and the stress of family expectations. I love the growth and character development in this book so much. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

Breslin and Livvie will take you through the entire spectrum of feels!! You'll cry, but then you will laugh at the great banter between the characters. I loved how real the characters were and how sensitive subjects were handled.

This enemies-to-lovers, fake dating story will have you rooting for both Breslin and Livvie. Livvie has crushed on Breslin for the last 2 years, but from afar. When she meets him by chance at college, she is in an embarrassing situation that Breslin helps her out of. Then he finds out she is a reporter and his attraction turns to loathing. Follow Livvie and Breslin through their Freshman year at Texas State Tech in dry, boring west Texas. The couple has to navigate Breslin's loss of his mother to cancer and Livvie's odd family dynamic, not to mention a meddling grandmother-figure who knows they are perfect for each other.

Chasing Headlines is the first book in J. Rose Black's Chasing Victory series. The book ends in a bit of a cliffhanger, but questions should be answered in the next book. This book was one that was hard to put down! I can't wait for the next book in the series!

This book is so beautifully balanced between the fun, the romance and the hard topics.

Liv is a girl that knows what she wants but is such a boy crazy daydreamer. She's witty and I love her inner dialogue is hilarious.

Breslin is so angsty, so depressed and it's heartbreaking to see him struggling with his mental health, anger issues and the grief of losing his mother. But there are other times I literally want to smack him for not allowing anyone to get close to him.

Antonio is so great he's such a good guy I need his book please. I love Dotty also her being a mother figure for both of them I love it.

I was enjoying it so much but I kind of felt that it ended super abruptly so please tell me I'm getting another book to this story. I was expecting a bit more spice there were just 2 solo scenes, I needed them together.

Thank you to J. Rose Black and Voracious Readers for a complimentary copy of Chasing Headlines (Kindle Edition) for an honest review. First I love baseball and wanting so much from this, second I have normally been reading hockey romance as of late, and I must say this sport romance hit differently. I finished in a day and could not put it down. I will say I NEED more, I was left wanting and longing for the next book like immediately. I am invested in the story and characters.

Oh My, J.Rose Black - Very well written, great tension, sllloooowww burn, fantastic grumpy sunshine, heroes, family drama, learning and understanding passions and dreams and self. I fell in love with the MMC/FMC and all the side characters, I truly felt their anxiety, fears, and drive. Loved me some Dotty, Antonio, Cathy.

A couple of my favorite quotes:

"You can't predict which direction the winds of change will blow, or control when they come. All we can do is try to be prepared."

"I won't see you grow into the man I see in you. The one I know you can become."

"Nothing's worth your integrity, Breslin. If you feel like you have to lie to get something, you should find a different way. Or have the strength to walk away."

"What was the perma-irritated old person hierarchy? Grump, then grouch, maybe curmudgeon?"

I’m so glad that I picked this book up. Baseball romance was not something I thought I needed in my life, but alas - consider me hooked.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Liv and Breslin’s characters, which were revealed through the dual first-person narration.

Liv, an incoming freshman at a Texas university, has high hopes of becoming a baseball scout. Growing up with her brother and father heavily involved in baseball, Liv’s fascination continued to grow, despite her father forbidding her to get involved with the game - or the players, for that matter - and her brother trying to convince her to take a different career path.

Breslin, a rising baseball star who was on his way to being drafted to the major leagues, is reeling from his mother’s death. A vulture-esque reporter riled him up in an attempt to interview him following an intense game played shortly after her death, and the emotional outburst prevented his dreams from coming true. Now, an incoming freshman at the same Texas university, Breslin is determined to fight for his spot in the MLB, and sees college as a necessary evil to suffer through until he gets his break.

As we follow Liv and Breslin’s meet-cute-to-enemies-to-lovers timeline in their first semester of college, we are introduced to an eclectic group of characters - from Liv’s friends, to Breslin’s coaches and teammates, and even an adopted sassy grandma. Sprinkle in some conflict and turmoil along the way, and it adds up to this cute and emotional journey. This was a great start to a new series, and I can’t wait to learn what happens next!

This book is such a fun and sweet read! Chasing Headlines is all about big dreams, baseball, and finding love in the middle of it all. Olivia Milline is a strong, determined woman who won’t let her overprotective dad’s strict rules stop her from chasing her dream of being a baseball scout.

Then there’s Breslin Cooper—a talented player whose life takes a tough turn after his pro baseball dreams fall apart.

Olivia and Breslin? They’re absolutely amazing! Olivia’s determination to connect with him and Breslin’s struggle to open up make their story feel so real and heartfelt. The slow-burn romance and funny back-and-forth moments had me hooked from start to finish.

Now this book was a couple of firsts for me—it’s my very first ARC and the first sports romance I’ve ever read. And honestly? I’m so glad it was! I love that It’s not just about love (I like when the romance in books is diluted with other things)—it’s also about working hard, standing up for what you want, and never giving up. If you like stories with strong female leads, swoon worthy athletes, and a bit of baseball/sports drama, Chasing Headlines is a must-read.

I really like this book. I’m a big fan off sport romance 🥰 and this was really good 😊 I loved the banter between the main characters. I absolutely loved Dotty and I would like to be like her when I get old 😅 I can’t wait for book 2 to be released so I can get some answers to all the questions I have after reading it 🫣 I really want to know what happens 😅

One thing that didn’t do it for me was the Texas dialect, I’m from Sweden and for me it was a little hard to understand the meaning and sometimes it just got confusing. 🫤

But besides that I really enjoy reading it and I can’t wait for the next one 🥰

Chasing Headline by J. Rose Black was such a refreshing surprise for me. I usually gravitate toward dark romance and high-spice reads, but this book was the perfect “cool down” in between. It delivered just the right mix of sports drama, humor, heartfelt emotion, and a slow-burn romance that kept me turning the pages late into the night.

The enemies-to-lovers dynamic between Liv and Breslin crackled with tension from the start. Their witty banter, stubborn clashes, and vulnerable moments made their connection feel authentic and well-earned. And can we talk about that bra scene? Absolutely hilarious and so memorable!

Beyond the romance, what really impressed me was the depth of the storytelling. J. Rose Black’s deep knowledge of baseball shines through every scene, making it feel like you're sitting right in the stands. The seamless integration of Spanish and the thoughtful mental health representation — especially surrounding grief, therapy, and emotional overload — added layers of realism that I truly appreciated.

Liv’s struggle between following her dreams and respecting her father’s strict rules made her character relatable, and Breslin’s journey from emotionally guarded to allowing people in was beautifully done. Their story simmers slowly before finally boiling over in the best way possible — and by the end, I was left with that delicious combination of satisfaction and impatience, already wishing I had the sequel in my hands.

If you love small-town settings, forced proximity, fake dating, found family, and sports romances with heart and humor, Chasing Headline is absolutely one to add to your TBR. J. Rose Black completely stole my time with this one — and I can’t wait to dive into what comes next! ⚾️❤️

Chasing Headlines is a sports romance & had so many of my favorite tropes! It was a good slow burn, enemies to lovers, fake dating & had a lot of banter! I loved it & I was here for it! I loved how it was written in dual POV. This was so well written, as well as the characters. I truly liked that the author showed representation of mental health & the struggles some may face.

Olivia was fun .. she’s funny, entertaining, strong & all around amazing FMC. Breslin is a bit moody but has a story behind it as to why. But I like Breslin & his attraction to Olivia. I loved watching Breslin & Olivia’s story develop. I adored them together & their story kept me so engaged. The chemistry between them truly shows. I loved Olivia & Coops relationship too & the found family dynamic! This is a must read & you’ll be wanting more!

Olivia has been told her whole life to stay away from baseball, that nothing good will come from it or its players. Breslin just wanted to play baseball but what happens when his plan blows up, will he keep standing in his way. I always enjoy baseball books, I enjoyed this book, I will say it was a little hard for me to get into at first but once I did I was like okay!! Chasing Headlines was entertaining and full of witty banter. This sports romance centered around college baseball and was the slowest of slow burn romances with lots of tension between the main characters. I thought the supporting characters were fun and lovable. This book was also very emotional at times and the main characters had to fight to follow their dreams. The book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger but there are many unresolved issues and I definitely want to see how they will be resolved in the next book.

I had a wicked hard time putting this book down! It has a covers a wide range of tropes. Enemies to lovers, baseball romance, young love beginning their college careers, redemption, grief, mental health, found family, and cinnamon roll supporting characters. The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars was because the slow burn did not bring about an eruption!!!!! I can’t wait for the next book!

Also the author did a great job portraying the complex balance college athletes face on a daily basis. They juggle school, athletics, family/friends, networking, and trying to navigate the beginning of the athlete’s future (socially, professionally, and personally)

This small-town rom-com brings real emotion to the field. Breslin is struggling to cope after the loss of his mom to cancer while Liv fights to find her footing in a male-dominated workforce. Neither have the supportive family like they should so they build their own family/support system with friends from school and work. There are some strong secondary characters that had me rolling. Love you Dotty!!! This story is the perfect combination of sports, light romance, emotion, and wit. I do hope Breslin and Liv have the opportunity for a sequel or a presence in the next book in the series. This feels like it’s the beginning of their story.

Sweet romance story takes place in the baseball world.

Coop is dealing with a ruined career when he lets his anger take control of himself.

Liv is a sports journalist that’s trying to break into the scouting side of baseball.

Their is tension and spark between then is strong and undeniable. They face many obstacles between past issues and family histories.

Captivating story. Well written and an enjoyable read.

An emotional journey of two people chasing their dreams, only to be wayland by life's stumbling blocks and "onlooker" interference. There was a depth to the main characters that drew me into the story, and had me in tears on more than one occasion. There was pain, loss, grief, frusteration and anger swirling throughout these young people, and very little understanding or compassion for either, IMO.

There were times I felt the plot moved a bit slowly. The action/drama would pick up again before gradually tapering back off. This made the book seem longer than its 400 pages, but overall it was a well written and executed storyline. I did feel like the ending just happened though. Would like to have known how some of the topics wrapped up, and that just didn't happen. Maybe there's a sequel in the works? There's certainly enough material for one.

I did receive this book as a gift from the author and voluntarily provided this review. Happy Reading Y'all 📚
