One Liner: A good beginner's guide

As one of the oldest religions in the world, Hinduism has countless scriptures, notes, studies, philosophies, and frameworks. We have Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, Ithihasas, Shastras, etc., each dealing with diverse topics, themes, stories, guidelines, and much more. There is no single standardized rule book we are supposed to follow. So, what do you do if you want to know about Hinduism? Where do you start?

A tricky question indeed!

This short book attempts to present a comprehensive overview of Hindu scriptures without going into extensive detail. It aims to sort and categorize the content while briefly explaining what they mean.

Let’s be honest. This is no small feat. Kudos to the author for attempting such a complex task.
The book starts with a short author’s note and an introduction. Both more or less say the same, though the author’s note touches upon her experience in the field.

Though the author mentions tentative dates, she emphasizes that those are not definite. I too won’t talk about the dates unless necessary. For example, she says the Mahabharata was about 5000 years ago, which puts it around 3000 BCE. This doesn’t align with the (1700-1850 BCE) dates proposed by Jijith Nadumuri Ravi (a scientist and a researcher), who used multiple parameters to arrive at a more realistic time frame. Instead of getting into a debate about this, I will focus on the actual content.

Right at the beginning, the author says Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma) is not just a religion but a way of life. Many of you may have heard this statement. While it is true, it’s important to remember that this doesn’t give others the right to say Hinduism is not a religion.

The author starts with the Vedas, which are divided into four parts that align with the four stages of life – brahmacharya (student), grihastya (householder), vanaprastha (forest life, renouncing materialistic pleasures), and sanyasa (renouncing everything).

The author also highlights character-based varna, the role of a guru, and numerous Upanishads that explain yoga. Giving it exotic names and calling yourself a yogi doesn’t make you one. What’s being taught today is not yoga.

I like that we get the significance of three lines of ash applied to the forehead (upper arms and wrists) and the context behind using the sacred ash (vibhuti) as bottu. Typically, in our households, when kids cry or get cranky and refuse to settle down, an elder applies vibhuti to their forehead with a small prayer (it can even be a request to your favorite god to clear the negative energies around the child). And yeah, it works. Little ones do settle down and start to feel better.

In the Puranas, the author provides an overview of what they are and a summary of each Purana. For example, Garuda Puranam deals with death, last rites, and the concepts of the afterlife. Usually, when someone in the family dies, they play/ recite Garuda Puranam during the eleven-day mourning period. The Bhagavatha Purana is all about Vishnu and his ten avatars with a major focus on the Krishna avatar (his childhood, etc.).

Then, there are Vendangas, Upa Vedas, Vendata Sutras, Smritis/ Dharma Shastras, Agamas, etc. These include detailed instructions and frameworks about science, math, fine arts, behavioral science, language, magic, sports, law, warfare, medicine, gemology, geography, astrology, astronomy, architecture, sculpture, cooking, animal husbandry, farming, meteorology, transportation, etc.

The Agamas are broadly divided into three – Vaishnava, Shaiva, and Shakta. Depending on which sampradaya you belong to, you refer to the relevant texts in Vedas, Upa Vedas, Shastras, Puranas, etc.

Despite the extensive nature of the texts, quite a few themes repeat – Brahman, the importance of correct pronunciation of mantra, the union of divine masculine and divine feminine as the core of the universe, and how the five elements of nature are integral to everything and can be found everywhere. Most importantly, even when the texts seem like they contradict each other, they actually don’t. The ideas co-exist and complement each other. That’s why even atheism comes under the same umbrella (not the distorted ego-centric version but the actual concept).

Needless to say, this is not a book you read in one go and forget on your bookshelf. It works as a great reference or beginner’s guide. It’s useful to check which Veda or Smriti talks about the topic you want to learn so that you can go and find the full-length materials.

To summarize, A Comprehensive Guide to Indian Scriptures is indeed a well-structured, compact, and reliable guide to getting an idea about Hindu scriptures. This can be your starting point.

My thanks to the publisher, Readomania, for a copy of the book. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinions.

The most important, yet subtle, feature of the book lies in its title. The usage of the word Indian as the descriptive word for scriptures is significant in order to highlight the rich heritage of thought, observations, ideas, and philosophies that arose from the subcontinent. For instance, the Ramayana extends beyond religion, contributing to literature, linguistics, ethics and aesthetics. While delicately linked to spirituality, the rigour of various ideas that laid the foundation for Indian thought to flourish cannot be designated as inconsequential or obsolete, as it has influenced the broader culture of Indian civilisation and all the diverse factions that exist within. Its highly dynamic nature, stretching from the inception of the Vedas to the modern era, highlights the enormity and immensity of the corpus, from plays and poetry to epic literature, philosophical observations, and hard sciences that developed over the millennia and continue to guide and inspire millions.

Like the majority of Hindus all over the world, the author experienced a top-down exposure to the culture, traditions, and all the stories that came with it. "Nobody reads the Ramayana for the first time" is a popular phrase in many Indian households that demonstrates not only the popularity of the Ithihasa, but also indicates the experiential wisdom one learns while growing up amidst the festivities and celebrations through popular media and discourses. At the end of the day, there comes a time when the knowledge gained must be organised in order to deconstruct its complexities and build on it with bona fide information — and it is at this juncture that this book makes itself indispensable. This is recognising the often-glossed-over point that the religion we call Hinduism is less a homogeneous organisation than a thriving ecosystem of diverse discoveries, ideas, and commentaries that span an entire subcontinent.

The book covers the Shruti and Smrithi aspects of Indian Philosophy, tackling the many roots they spawn one chapter at a time. In a library as vast as history, it is challenging to know where to begin, with options being plentiful and scattered. In the words of the author, it is a 'guide', or a robust index of literature that forms the heritage of Indian scriptures, with a short description of each entry explaining its context. In a society where cultural literacy begins with the knowledge of the Ramayana and Bhagvat Gita simply existing, or often with cursory knowledge of their summaries, this guide bursts open the door to a sea of gems from the ocean of Indian thought. The author begins with the four Vedas, out of which grows the intricate thicket of the Upanishad, Purana, Ithihasa, Upa Veda, Vedangas, Shad Darshanas, Ganita, and other texts of historical, literary, cultural, and scientific interest. Any confusion that may have been on account of categorisation and nomenclature is eradicated with certainty. With thousands of pages containing several thousand verses that make up the content of each book, one can't help but feel humbled, not in a manner that diminishes the reader but inspires them.

Among the colourful banquet of publications, I was most intrigued by the Adhyatma Ramayana and the Yoga Vasistha, two monumental literary and philosophical works celebrated for their rich metaphysical insights and practical life lessons. Though rooted in spiritual traditions, they offer secular values and literary depth that merit serious study. Their ethical and philosophical tone bears a loose resemblance to Stoicism and the Homeric classics, though each remains uniquely Indian in origin and sensibility. One of the understated features of this book is the author consciously using key indigenous words as nouns as opposed to crude translations, retaining the authenticity of the texts and the culture within which they thrived.

The distinction between saguna (with attributes) and nirguna (attribute-less) is one of the most vital pieces of information that must be extracted and looked into, given the derogatory practice of referring to certain practices as 'idolatry', spread by adversaries through concealing and misinterpreting texts. While the Upanishads emphasise contemplating Nirguna Brahman (attribute-less supreme), Agama traditions recognise the importance of rituals and symbols for worship, self-examination, and realisation of the non-material aatman, placing it adjacent to Vedic traditions despite the different path taken.

One important element that would significantly enhance the book’s value is the inclusion of citations. While the author presents a broad array of ideas and philosophies, including specific references to the original texts or their commentaries would allow readers to trace the origins of the concepts discussed. Citations provide an essential foundation for scholarly discourse; without them, it may be difficult to discern whether certain ideas are universally accepted or represent the author's interpretations. This book marks a crucial first step in bringing to the mainstream those texts and literary works long relegated to the background. It is approachable and does not require prerequisite knowledge. Information is sensitive and susceptible to the forces of time and ideology. Only with support and funding for Indian knowledge systems can we bring to light what we do know, while carefully distinguishing between the genuine insights and misinterpretations due to ideology and bias being uncovered through translation and mistranslation.

I would like to extend my gratitude to Sunita Pant Bansal and Readomania for providing a physical copy of the book. This review is completely voluntary and expresses my genuine opinions.

When I first picked up A Comprehensive Guide to Indian Scriptures by Sunita Pant Bansal, I was eager to find a resource that would demystify the vast corpus of Hindu sacred texts without imposing a particular interpretive lens. From the moment I flipped through the table of contents, I sensed that Bansal had struck a careful balance between breadth and clarity—an ambitious undertaking for any author dealing with millennia of spiritual literature.

Scope and Coverage
In my experience, the book truly lives up to its title. Bansal begins with the four Vedas, laying out their hymns and ritual significance in concise summaries that feel neither rushed nor overly academic. She then transitions to the Upanishads, where her synopses of key philosophical dialogues helped me grasp complex ideas—like ātman and Brahman—in plain language. As someone who has read portions of the Bhagavad Gita before, I appreciated her cross‐references between the Gita’s teachings and earlier Upanishadic threads.

Structure and Organization
One of the aspects I found most helpful is the book’s modular structure. Each chapter is self‐contained: Bansal provides historical context, excerpts of essential passages, and a brief outline of themes. When I moved on to the Puranas and the epics (Ramayana and Mahabharata), I could easily revisit earlier chapters to remind myself of foundational concepts. The decision to group Smriti texts—such as the Dharmashastras—in a final section also made logical sense, as it showed how law and societal norms evolved from mythic narratives.

Writing Style and Accessibility
From my perspective, Bansal’s prose strikes a welcoming tone. She writes with the confidence of someone deeply versed in mythological studies, yet she never assumes the reader shares her background. Technical terms are introduced sparingly, always accompanied by lucid explanations. I particularly enjoyed her use of sidebars highlighting “Did You Know?” facts and brief quotations that encouraged me to explore the primary texts firsthand. This approach made what could have been dry summaries feel engaging and even conversational.

Personal Reflections
Reading this guide felt like having a patient, knowledgeable teacher by my side. There were moments when I paused to reflect—especially while reading her concise retelling of the Mahabharata war scenes or the tale of King Harishchandra’s trials in the Puranas. In those sections, I realized how much narrative power the original stories carry, and Bansal’s decision to let the texts “speak for themselves” without heavy-handed commentary allowed me to form my own emotional responses.

Conclusion
Overall, my journey through A Comprehensive Guide to Indian Scriptures has been both enlightening and enjoyable. As someone seeking an entry point into Hindu literature—whether for personal growth, academic interest, or spiritual inquiry—I found Bansal’s work to be an indispensable roadmap. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a clear, respectful, and thorough survey of India’s sacred heritage, presented in a way that honors the original texts while inviting readers to chart their own paths of understanding.

Hinduism is just a religion but a way of life. It doesn’t have a single founder and is a collection of thoughts and observations of various ancient scholars. It looks beyond the mental and physical aspect of a living entity. Hinduism believes in the spiritual nature of existence.
Where did I get this understanding from?
The Comprehensive Guide to Indian Scriptures.
The title gives you a peek into what to expect from the book. Yet, if a reader like me who has not explored Hinduism before, this book is an elaborate guide.
The book discusses the methodical aspects of our scriptures. There is clarity on the origin of the religious texts. The book details the structure of the Vedas and Upanishad in simple, understandable language. The best part of the book is it tells us how to apply the ancient text in our regular lives. Though the book is academic in parts, it doesn’t douse the reader’s interest at all.
The interpretation of texts, and how the writings go back to the time before Newton and Galileo spoke of gravity and the universe is interesting. Personally, I liked the way the writing doesn’t preach. If you like it, you take it. If you don’t, you can still read it as a piece of information. The book doesn’t force you to believe in Hinduism. It speaks more of Hinduism as a science rather than a way of worship.
If you are inclined to study the scriptures, this should be your first book. A few years ago, I started reading Mr Tharoor’s book on Hinduism and was confused. But now, after reading A Comprehensive Guide to Indian Scriptures, I’m prepared to take on Mr Tharoor’s words.
If spirituality is your domain or area of liking, this book is again for you. One cannot understand the higher nature of existence without knowing of its base. This book is your base book on spirituality and Hindu rituals. We all follow rituals, and chant prayers, but most of us don’t know what they mean. Where to find their meaning? This book helps us understand that format.
One line that stayed with me was,
‘The Upanishad ask the spiritual aspirant to renounce all worldly joy, whereas the Agama accept the world as real and not as something to be renounced.’
The above thought summarises the essence of the book. There is something for everyone in the scriptures. Read the texts to find out what works for you.
One suggestion, do not rush with the reading. Read a few concepts every day to fully comprehend the true nature of its writing. A second read would be better to get to the roots of the concept. I strongly feel this book should be part of school syllabus. Teenage is the right age to introduce the scriptures to our children.
Looking at the turbulent times, adults need such books more than children.

I have often wondered how our Vedas came into being—who actually wrote them and how their knowledge was accumulated. Hinduism is one of the oldest religions in the world, and as a Hindu, I embarked on a quest to find answers to these deep, lingering questions. This book not only answered my questions but also guided me through the origins, significance, and evolution of these sacred foundational texts.

The author begins with a brief introduction to Sanatan Dharma before shedding light on the origins of our religious scriptures, from the Vedas to the Upanishads, in a captivating and accessible manner. The book is a treasure trove of information, revealing the richness of these ancient texts that many of us may not fully understand or appreciate.

One of my favorite sections discusses the great Indian epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. I was particularly fascinated to learn about the Hari Vamsha, an appendix to the Mahabharata, which I had never heard of before. Beyond these insights, the book offers much more valuable content.

I would recommend reading this book slowly to fully absorb its wealth of information. If you are interested in spirituality and seeking the right book to begin your journey, this is a must-read. It not only enlightens but also serves as a keepsake guide that will support you throughout your spiritual exploration.

Hinduism has evolved over centuries without any central authority or definitive scripture, with a vast number of scriptures. 'A Comprehensive Guide to Indian Scriptures', as the title suggests, is s comprehensive guide to Indian Scriptures.

The book largely follows the historical development of these scriptures . From The Vedas including the Samhitas , Brahmanas , Aranyakas , and each of 108 Upanishads, linked to each Veda. It also covers the later scriptures like the Dharma Shastras , Puranas , Itihasas , Vedangas , Upa Vedas , Darshanas , Vedanta Sutras , Agamas , and Kala Shastras.

The book does an excellent job of condensing the vast array of scriptures into a concise format. This book also does an excellent job in categorising the vast collection of Hindu scriptures and present them in a simple to understand manner; with brief synopsis of the content of each Veda and Upanishads. It also covers the Epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The language used is simple to understand for even the casual reader.

Overall 'A Comprehensive Guide to Indian Scriptures' is a well crafted guide for anyone interested to know more about the sacred scriptures of Hinduism in detail.

The book provides an in-depth explanation of crucial terms such as Shruti (Veda) and Smriti (Dharma Shastra), delving into their spiritual and philosophical significance. Being familiar with some concepts from the Vedic rituals, The Comprehensive Guide of Indian Scriptures made me even more eager to explore these ideas in greater detail.

Sunita Pant Bansal explains the essence of Shruti (Veda) and Smriti (Dharma Shastra) in a way that connects all the texts and practices seamlessly. The book sheds light on the different layers of the Vedas, such as the Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda, and Atharva Veda, and their significance in ancient religious practices. I particularly appreciated the breakdown of the Samhita, Brahmana, and Aranyaka, which describe the rituals, their philosophical meanings, and the mysticism behind them.

The author's discussion of the Upanishads, Vedanta Sutra, and the path towards ultimate knowledge was enriching. In addition, the sections on the Puranas, Itihasa, Vedanga, Upa Veda, and Darshana broadened my understanding of the spiritual landscape of ancient India. This book is a comprehensive guide, making it easier for anyone to grasp the wisdom of the scriptures and their true meanings.

I just picked it up out of curiosity. But once I started, I kept turning the pages. It’s so simple to read. Not like a textbook at all. I always thought books about scriptures would be too hard or boring, but this one felt different.

What I really loved was how the author explained big topics in such an easy way. She talks about the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, Ramayana, Mahabharata… but not in a heavy or confusing way. It felt like she was just telling me stories and making me think. The part I liked the most was when she linked the ideas from the scriptures to how we live every day. There was one thing she said about dharma — that it’s not about following fixed rules, but about doing the right thing depending on the situation. That line stuck with me because it felt real and practical.

This book made me feel calm while reading. It gave me a better idea of where all these values we grow up hearing actually come from. If you’ve ever been curious about our scriptures but didn’t know where to start, this is honestly the best first step.

A highlight is the section on the Upanishads, particularly the Kaivalya, Kalagni Rudra, Kali Santarana, and Katha Upanishads, which explore themes of renunciation, Shiva’s cosmic role, the power of divine names, and the philosophical quest for the Self. The book gave me a new view on ideas I’ve heard about but never fully understood. I’ve always been curious about where certain customs and beliefs come from, and this book explained that out pretty clearly and it didn't sound too formal. It helped me connect the dots between old traditions and the way we live now.

What really got to me was how it explained the Vedas and Upanishads—not just what they are, but how they’re organized and why they matter. The writing didn’t feel like it was trying much to impress; it felt like someone very genuinely trying to help me understand something important. Even when the concepts got detailed, it never felt like a struggle to read.

I appreciated how the author didn’t just leave the ideas in the past. There were moments where I found myself thinking, “This actually makes sense for today.” It made me think about how much I didn’t know—and how much more I now want to learn.

What an interesting book it is!! And I have to say I have never read a book like this before. "A Comprehensive Guide to Indian Scriptures" by Sunita Pant Bansal is a book for all the enthusiastic people who love to know more about Hindu scriptures and how they evolved or whoever wants to know more about the Vedas.

I love how the author starts the book from the very beginning by introducing what Sanatana Dharma is and the very first division of the scriptures of Hindu—Shruti and Smriti. As an Indian and knowing my history, I can say how important it is to understand this division before going into the details. This difference between these two will make you realize how old and sacred the Sanatana Dharma is.

I love how in just a few short pages the author gives a detailed and straightforward, simple view of all the categories of the scriptures. I highly recommend this; the book deserves the recognition for the author's research.

What a beautifully written and deeply insightful book! I was especially captivated by the sections on the Sariraka Upanishad, which explains how our body is linked with the five elements—earth, water, fire, air, and ether. The way it maps human physiology and emotions to nature’s elements is fascinating and truly thought-provoking. 🌿🔥💧💨✨

The Skanda Upanishad also stands out, especially with its teaching that "Jiva is Shiva", reminding us that divinity resides in each of us. 🕉️ The idea that ignorance (avidya) leads to egoism, and that true knowledge (vidya) frees us—is something that stayed with me long after reading.

This book isn’t just a read—it’s an experience, rich with ancient wisdom and spiritual depth. Highly recommended for anyone on a quest for self-awareness, inner balance, or simply a deeper understanding of Indic philosophy.

The Hindu religion is called Sanatana Dharma, where sanatana stands for eternal and dharma for laws.
Enter a book that shows the different dimensions of the religion which is known to all but yet many aspects of the same stays hidden.

The easy delivery of the book and the description which is kept top notch for anyone to understand the thought and effort of the author made me highly impressed while indulging into such a complete read.

I personally would recommend this one to the present generation who lags with the right insight and knowledge about our scriptures and would definitely wish to know the same more.

And all the specialists about them? If you do not or if you want to know more about it, then you should definitely read the book.

In this book the author, with some simple words and in a simple way, tries to give us some full clarification of the different types of Hindu scriptures. The author covers each category, from the difference between Shruti and Smriti to what the Rig Veda and Sama Veda are to Vendanga and Upanishad.

The book is not big but very interesting and informative. While reading the book, you will understand how extensive research the author did to make this book, which makes the information more authentic.
