Acclaimed writer/actor/comedian Patton Oswalt (The Goon, Batman, JLA, Dollhouse, Ratatouille) brings back one of Firefly's most beloved characters in this special spotlight issue!
Always ready with a brilliant aerial maneuver and a terrible one-liner, Wash was pilot of the Firefly-class ship Serenity in Joss Whedon's cult-classic TV series before being killed in the movie. Float Out includes three brand-new stories of Wash in a series of exciting smuggling raids, each providing a hair-raising escape or daring last-minute rescue! Featuring a cameo that will leave Serenity fans reeling, this special one-shot presents new tales of the Serenity universe's past and tantalizing hints about its future!
I wasn't alone in the movie theatre when I cried out during Serenity. Earlier, we were shocked with Book, and then Wash. So suddenly.
When I saw The Shepard's Tale on the shelf, I expected closure and a tribute to an incredible character. I was thoroughly disappointed and sadly, it made me hesitant to read this...
I love this book. It is the honourable tribute that I had expected for Book. I loved that this didn't involve the Serenity crew at all and instead gave us tales of Wash from old friends and pilots. We've always known that Wash could fly, but these insights showed just how much Wash not just knew about flying, but felt and lived.
The cameo wasn't good because of the shocking splash. It was good because of everything else the person did and said, adding even more depth to Wash, while bringing him back down to earth.
Hoben Washburn was definitely one of my favorite characters and I miss him. If there were to be another movie I would not get to hear crazy sayings or enjoy his dinosaur fights. This was a short but nice tribute to a character that was very well liked. I could see Wash in each of those situations and know that he would act just that way. If you liked this character than you will enjoy this little tribute.
The essence of this comic was good but the technical jargon flew over my head the first time. I slightly understood it the second time around.
Also it bugs me that these colleagues they managed to herd together to pay tribute to Wash don't seem really close to him in the first place. If from a viewpoint of trying to highlight Wash's good values/excellent piloting skills then they've succeeded, but I think the Firefly crew are the ones in a better position to comment on Wash's traits.
It seems that a new crew is being put together consisting of former associates of Wash. Three of them each tell how they first came to know Wash. His talent for flying and loyalty to his friends are the main themes. The artwork is gorgeous, particularly the cover. The story is interesting, particularly the last page. Any fan of Serenity/Firefly should add this volume to their collection.
I feel like this might have worked as an episode, but it doesn't as a comic. I can't tell the three main characters apart and that makes it difficult to follow or care about their interactions or the stories they're telling. And where/why the hell did Zoe come from at the end??
2.5. Not that Wash doesn't deserve a short volume about him, but touching/warming as parts of this was, it still feels like this entire oneshot exists solely for that ending reveal. Which wasn't exactly well executed. WASH DESERVES BETTER. :(
I give this two stars only for the last page. I didn't find the story at all compelling or interesting but the reveal of the last page was worth the few minutes it took to read.
I'm not a big comic fan but I actually liked this! I decided to read some Serenity comic because I love Firefly/Serenity and I wanted to give it a try. This one is a bit emotional and interested, we see more about Wash's past and and memories from his past friends. Very interested and small reading.
A nice little reminiscence about Wash. The framing story could have been a little clearer. The art could have been a little bit better. It could have been just a little clearer who those old buddies of Wash were. It was still sweet and nice.
So this was a huge disappointment. I bought this as soon as I heard about it (last week; hai, I'm late!) because I love Wash so much and was willing to pay collector prices for 15 more minutes. Patton Oswalt has a reputation for being very funny (though I'm not overly familiar with his work), so it seemed like a sure thing. Yet this book isn't funny at all. Not even a little bit. I read it twice with a frown of consternation. No smiles, no chuckles, no "that's so Wash". Nothing. It's the blandest thing I've ever read in comic book form, and I once owned upwards of 200 Archies.
What it does have is three characters we've never met and or even heard of telling each other about adventures they had with Wash at various points in history. These are pure exposition, almost entirely consisting of blocks of text surrounding exterior shots of random spacecraft. (And the least plausible Reaver ship ever conceived; for real, that was just effing stupid.) The exposition itself is all extremely technical descriptions of what Wash fired up and when, and what move he made next, in vocabulary that is miles beyond what these characters would seem to be capable of. I buy their vocabulary like I'd buy Jayne with a PhD in Elizabethan poetry.
By the same token, they talk a lot about how funny Wash was, always joking, what a riot, without actually showing it. Even in the handful of panels that he's actually in, where he does get a few lines, the ones that are supposed to be funny just aren't. Not even when they pulled out the obligatory dinosaur. It all comes off like a bare outline that's somehow still trying too hard.
"I can imagine what jokes Wash would make about that," says guy who wasn't there. "---- " says guy who was there. "dfjefrloerkwerogpbekawermbi," says exposition box over illustration of Wash that can only be identified by his Hawaiian shirt.
In short, it gets 2 stars because I can't bear to give anything Serenity-related less than that. Purely on its own merit, I wish I had my money back.
2 stars for the actual story + 1 star for the feels
I'm not generally a picky person when it comes to books so I'm starting to feel weird rating all these short Serenity stories fairly poorly. If you haven't seen the movie Serenity, please just stop reading now because it'll spoil the shit out of everything.
SPOILERS!
Okay, so despite the fact that the story is passable at best it still made me cry at the end because:
Damn you Joss Whedon!
So yeah, Float Out is three old friends of Wash remembering good times with him as they christen their ship the "Jetwash." The stories are mildly amusing but only because I imagined it in my head rather than looking at the damned ugly artwork. I hate to say it because I love Patton Oswalt but this just wasn't Wash for me. It was too stiff, tried too hard. If you loved Wash as much as I did, it might be worth a read but otherwise it's very skippable.
Serenity did not have the opportunity to truly give Wash the farewell he deserved so I was super stoked about this comic book honoring his life. I do not, however, believe this story gave him the farewell I was hoping for. Who are these people relaying their happy memories of our favorite, fun-loving character? Where is the crew? Hearing stories from before his mischievous days on Serenity would have made a good read on its own but I wanted a heartfelt and sorrowful goodbye from his true family. I wanted to hear the words they never spoke standing on the edge of the cliff offering silence to the image of Zoe's love. I wanted to feel his loss and see how lost the crew is without him if only for a short time. I feel he deserves more.
[SPOILERS], kind of? .... Anyways, I loved Wash and his dinosaurs. When he died in Serenity it was so sudden and I couldn't really come to terms with it because it was so quick. Float Out would have made a better episode than it did a comic, but I'll take whatever I can get. The comic gave a much better send-off than Serenity allowed for. Parts of the reminiscing were a little confusing hard to follow, but you could get the overall grasp of what as happening. However, the ending to Float Out was everything I could have hoped for. Read it. You won't be disappointed with the ending!
At first, I was going to give this two stars. I was really lost during the nostalgic scenes. Much of the dialogue was jargon I couldn't follow/understand and I was really bored. It seemed like an unnecessary story. But then the last couple pages blew me away, and I finally understood what this comic was about. It was lovely.
This is definitely it, everyone. This is my absolute favorite installment, and those of you who've read this can guess why! But to those of you who have not, let me just say, all these graphic novels of Serenity are so worth the read, if only to revisit this world that Joss Whedon created once more. They are special to me, and I cannot express my appreciation for these enough!
I have a distinct memory of my high school self traveling around to different comic stores trying to get a copy.
Short but to Firefly fans, and especially fans of Wash, worth the read. For those still devastated by the ending scenes of Serenity, Patton Oswalt does give some happiness in a plot point I remember was picked up in subsequent comics.
I think with all the flying that this would have worked better in a video form rather than a comic, but don't get me started about how much I miss the TV show. And Wash. I miss Wash. Glad to see a tribute to him.
Something went wrong here. I just finished "Better Days" and for some reason I read this one after. And in sequence this is after the movie. Which movie is after the comic series...I think
Anyways! It wasn't as good as the previous ones. But I like that Zoey is pregnant!
