This sounds like magic. It is magic. It is Scientology. - LRH

One thing you will notice is that when you look through the reviews of this is that unlike other self help books the actual content of this book is very vague or quite simply not discussed in favour of how it made that person feel. Now whilst it could be explained away as a product of this book being vapid or reviewed by biased anti or pro Scientologists I would like to offer an alternative. This alternative is that this book is written more as an appetiser to get one interested in services and heavier works and is presented in such a way that doesn't translate easily into a review/brief explanation. Hubbard is a fan of creating vast and interlocking systems of thought - in this relatively short book (when you don't factor in glossaries and generous spacing) you get the following concepts applied throughout the book:

The principle of the Stable Datum
Cycles of Action
Tone Scale
ARC Triangle (Affinity - Reality-Communication)
The Reactive/Analytical mind dichotomy
Scientology Game theory

Given the space and scope of the work none of them are really explained or justified particularly well and it often comes off as making traditional remedies vastly more complicated. For instance going for a walk to deal with work exhaustion becomes an activity to extrovert oneself by restoring reality and in turn raising communication and affinity or not interrupting people or giving contradictory instructions becomes maintaining a complete cycle of action of start-change-stop.

Oh and there are of course a few concerning issues like exhaustion not being a product of working for too long or too hard but instead the restimulation of an old injury - hence a purely psychosomatic condition.

I liked this book, and even felt jubilant during a couple of its sentences. I respect the author's attempt to answer these questions in such minute detail. Overall, I value the book for the questions the book gave me the chance to ask myself, which otherwise I mightn't have thought of.

Interesting points made in the book, which I'm mulling over:

Control is a valuable thing in the job setting. It is important to have a boss skilled in "good control" techniques and an employee very receptive to this control. If you are someone who rebels against authority, perhaps it because you failed to be controlled in the past, and thus do not know what true control is.

"The doctrine of the stable datum" is the concept that in a complicated world, one can cut through the confusion by remembering the one foundational piece of information you know to be true. If you can remember that piece, you will not have confusion about the other information related to it in your reality.

Hubbard's stable datum for the working world, which answers (for him) the question of "Why work at all?" Is this ""fact"" (double air quotes here from me): Work gives purpose to a person's life. He says that if we were unable to work, either not permitted by injury or by government, we would not be happy.

Indeed, I find it interesting that he points to child labor laws as a reason for the alienation young people feel, towards the working world, when they finally must work. Having been forbidden from this world their whole lives, they now feel that they don't belong to the world of work. I, as a young person, definitely feel alienated from the world of work, and perhaps this is one reason for it.

Hubbard says the timeline of work mirrors the timeline of life. The aspects of life, creation, survival and destruction (in that order), mirror the aspects of work: start, change, stop. Hubbard says some people are better, generally, at starting, changing, or stopping things in their lives, and these patterns affect one's work life. By becoming good at all three we get closer to freedom.

He says man must have a game.

He says uncontrol is indeed undercontrol. He says things feel unreal when you feel no control over things in your world.

He says people end up "abandoning sections of life" after bad experiences, but if we were to truly understand the effects of such experiences on our minds and bodies, we could improve our lives and make our comebacks without fear if we chose to do so.

---

I'd sum up this book as "a pretty good try." Hubbard used what he knew and tried to make sense of things. Remember when teachers told us never to go with multiple choice answers with words like "all" every" "always" or "only"? Hubbard writes this way, which is automatically confining. To make blanket statements about reality, in the hope that readers will block out their knowledge of things being different, is unrealistic.

A lot of Hubbard's persuasion here seems to be "grow up and get a job, because you need one, everyone else needs one, and everyone else has one." But I feel compelled to counter that with "grow up and work towards observing that reality is more complicated than you say it is," and "maybe there are better ways for us to organize our society that don't kill the planet."

Early on, Hubbard states that Scientology is the first Western attempt to fully understand our reality scientifically. The key word for me here is "Western." One must always be striving in Hubbard's world; there is no concept here of "success through inaction," championed by Taoist Lao-Tzu. This would be one of many perspectives worth challenging if one's philosophy is the true philosophy.

To say other inflammatory things to readers, such as "if a man has no ability to work, he is as good as dead" is incredibly callous and shallow (but not quite...callow...). The perspective of the whole is never addressed in this book about work, though Hubbard dedicates his book to the people "working themselves to death" for our society, saying the workers are the living pillars undergirding our whole civilization here, and that "they're not just cogs, they are the machine itself."

So...is our whole civilization good? What about disabled people? What about WOMEN, doofus? What about the work we must do in our lives that is unpaid?

Glad this book was short. Worth a listen if you want new ideas to chew on.

This book dramatically changed my life for the good - and I didn't actually think that was possible. I look at life with happiness and excitement, rather than despair. I am enthusiastic about the future, rather than worried about it. I love my fellow man, and understand them, so much more than I thought possible, even when they may seem to act irrationally. I give better advice and am able to help my friends. I am more calm. I am happier. This book just makes so much sense, and I love it!!

I don't really believe in reviews because I think they bias people from using what they inherently know: their own ability to find out and decide for themselves.

What I got from this book was nothing short of amazing. This is a corrected re-release of the original book. With all the mis-duplications on the part of original transcriptionists corrected, the book flowed amazingly well and was an easy read which was difficult to put down. The reason it was hard to put down wasn't because it was a particularly good or bad book, rather, that I applied, instantly, what each chapter laid out, concept by concept. Through this, I was able to handle confusions in my life and business and discover what my original purpose was. When I picked up this book, I was lacking drive and purpose and felt like I ran out of good "games" to play in my business and life. This book took apart problems and games and allowed me to look at them and solve them one by one.

I have been a Scientologist for almost 13 years now and I don't think I really understaood what it was or did until completing this book. I would recommend this to anyone as a FIRST read if they want to find out about Scientology because it addresses some immediate areas and problems I find most people I know could use some help addressing. It gives you some results and you can then see if it works for you and decide to continue reading. I am moving on to read Scientology: The Fundamentals of Thought.

Though this book is about problems of work, the ideas in this book meld well in any situation, be it work, home, or any relationship. Good tool for people who are exhausted, tired of working, or just generally bitter about the whole process of working.

- no i brzmi to z pozoru logicznie, prawda?

(s.14)

Finally, I met my third magic teacher who taught me for five years real magic. Ken taught me how to get what I wanted when I wanted it on my terms. He taught me no entertainment magic. He taught me nothing but real magic.
He taught me the science of the mind, Scientology and real ESP. I once again did not ask him to teach me. Ken like the other two magic mentors offered to teach me. Ken offered to make me his protégé the first evening I met him.
Ken is the only mentor I did not go out and try to find. He came knocking at my door one evening with my mother on his arm. I had never met him before that evening.
My father had passed on many years earlier to be with Heavenly Father when he was only forty-six. My father contracted multiple sclerosis and spent ten years slowly losing all his fantastic physical abilities. He was the wonderful one who kept on telling me to go to the library and get a book each time I wanted to learn something new.
It was near Christmas and my mother introduced me to Ken. She explained to me how they met and that they had been dating. He seemed very nice and he like my other two mentors had a glowing aura around himself. He radiated a warm reddish glow that emanated from his face. He exuded that real bubbling happiness I wanted. Ken was the third and the youngest of all my mentors he was only in his fifties.
I remember our first conversation.
Ken, what do you do for a living?
I live off of investments and I have no job.
That’s interesting. I have never met anyone who does not work and just lives off of investments. Since you don’t have a job, what do you do with your time?
I have devoted my life to helping others get their grandest dreams.
“Do you have a dream.”
I said yes I do. I have been taught by two of the greatest entertainment magicians in the world and I want to do stage magic full time.
How’s it going?
“Ok, but not making much money yet.”
May I share some thoughts with you that might help with the money generation?
Sure that would be fine. (My best attribute is my open mind. I always listen to others ideas especially if they are free gifts.)
Do you have a pencil and small piece of paper?
What Ken shared with me was the Scientology triangle of understanding which explains in just a few words how the entire universe can be manipulated to your financial advantage. He explained it simply and clearly.
It took Ken about ten minutes to share these secrets from "the problems of work" Book. As I listen it made perfect sense to me. I knew it would work just from his explanation; it made total logical sense. I could hardly wait to try it the next day. I had never seen the world this way before, so simple. The world is so easy to manipulate once you understand it. After he spent these few minutes teaching me, my income immediately “quadrupled” that very month and stayed permanently four times higher and kept on going up.

Ken taught me about that Temple of Wisdom on top of the mountain
Ken spent “five years” imparting secrets from the temple of wisdom as he called it on top of a mountain. Ken said most people zigzag their way up the mountain very slowly ascending to the top. Some give up and never make it to the top and the temple. Most take an entire lifetime to get there to the temple. But some just go quickly straight up the side of the mountain to the top and enjoy the power of the temple of wisdom their whole life. Ken said, “I am going to take you straight up to the top and the temple and Ken did. Ken did not charge me a penny for all his time and fantastic help. None of my many mentors ever charged. There mentoring was always a free gift. Basically, none of them needed the money all of them were financially independent.
Ken had me read several Scientology books and as I read them; I realized that the Scientologists were obviously unbelievably powerful people. Realizing their extreme power, I purposely never got involved with the Scientology organization. I was frankly scared of their personal power to influence everyone around them. Their secrets, in my opinion, were too powerful.
They with just a few minutes and a couple of thoughts increased my income four times in one month. Too much power for anyone to have; I could imagine with this kind of information how they could manipulate and take over another person’s life.
They say power corrupts and the kind of absolute power they have, I reasoned, might corrupt absolutely. Since I have no experience with the organization, except reading their books and Ken's sharing, I cannot say anything derogatory about the organization.
The thing that bothered me the most was I found their books to be absolutely positively “hypnotic” as I read them. It was like these books were playing with my mind as I was reading them. Everything I read was so valuable. I never wasted a second of my time when reading their tomes of knowledge.
After a while, I noticed that Ken had a psychic connection with me. Ken would call me up with the exact information I needed to help me with my personal problems I was having at that very moment without me telling him about my problems in advance and he lived in another city.
I bought this to his attention that he had a real psychic obvious telepathic connection with me and he asked, “Does this sixth sense connection bother you?” I told him no, I was fine with it.
The information he gave me was all about the real magic that controls the world. I used it to help me with rearing my four boys, understanding and expressing love with my wife and in all my business dealings, it was very helpful. My financial success now skyrocketed and my family and personal happiness increased tremendously.
Scientology is one of the most practical studies I have ever undertaken. It lets you have anything you want and no one can stop you. It is totally logical and very simple and easy to implement. It always works flawlessly. I cannot say too many good things about it. Remember I purposely never went to even one of the Scientologist meetings.
I read many books under Ken’s tutelage.

I found it interesting but is not practical for real life I lived, huge applaud to good folks there but I lived my life outside their groups and behaving like them is considered weird or rude not everyone knows what those words mean and why their behavior is based in their beliefs, only works within their groups and that organization, the world is bigger than Scientology for sure, never worked out for me befriending boss and influential people and ass kissing to get ahead. End of the day ass kissers get fired first too busy kissing ass to do their jobs.

The only book of L. Ron Hubbard I like most. Starting of the book is same as every book of his. It would be really great if every author would inspire by him to provide grocery at the end of book.
This book is probably worth of reading. In so little page he described such a way that it keeps engaging reader till the end.
Overall worth of money and time.

When it comes to being in the working world, you REALLY should read this book. It clearly breakdown the different departments in the workplace so that you can understand that when something happens it's not ALWAYS your fault. Forget about the Scientology aspect of it, just think about the important information you need when it comes to the abusive and nepotistic workplace.

Problems of Work provides workable solutions to that crucial seven-tenths of existence - WORK.

And since work is seven-tenths of existence - if you do not like work, the you also don't like life. So here is the solution to making that part of your life a little more bearable.

If you ever have experienced exhaustion or a "burnt-out" feeling while on the job, but continue to work for fear of losing your job to the point of collapsing or getting injured--then rest easy since there is a process described in the book which can restore energy and control over your work to you.

"...It is obvious--in various experiments which have been made in Scientology--that life, no matter what its emotional tone or lack of it, is in essence a game. And that the elements of life itself are the elements of games." -LRH, The Problems of Work

Whilst I am not a Scientologist I got this book when I was lured into an "Interview techniques" service the local org was running without knowledge it was a route into Scientology.

Anyway the book is actually pretty good, it addresses many characteristics of people in the workplace and gives you the tools to overcome them and that the workplace is a fundamentally flawed environment. It gives you an in depth assessment of the workplace which leaves you questioning it. Ultimately it teaches that you are in charge of your environment and to not leave anything to chance. Since reading it has helped me become more organised, more focused on end goals to any work i might be doing and has definitely helped me overcome any suppressive people. A recommended read :)
