The Fault in Our Pants: A Parody of "The Fault in Our Stars"

Rate this book
As I was approaching the mall exit, this cute little girl with barretted braids appeared in front of me and said, "What's that in your nose?"
"They're called cannula," I said. "These tubes give me oxygen, which helps me breathe."
"Would they help me breathe, too?" she asked.
"I dunno, wanna try?"
"Nah," she replied, "I don't wanna look like a weirdo."
"Wanna know a secret?" I asked.
"Yeah!"
I licked my finger and rubbed it on her arm. "I just gave you cancer," I whispered.

THE FAULT IN OUR PANTS is the hilarious new parody of The Fault in Our Stars! Just listen to these reviews:

"Grand." -Augustus Waters

"A douchefest." -Hazel Grace Lancaster

"Will there be a braille edition?" -Isaac

"Why wasn't I in the movie?" -Kaitlyn

All the big scenes that weren't in the book but should have been are here! For example:

--The scene where Hazel tells Isaac that "always" no longer applies if your significant other goes blind

--The scene where Hazel wastes her Genie Wish by wishing for a million more wishes

--The scene where Hazel tries to take it past first base in the Anne Frank House

And many more!

From support group to the swing set of tears, from Augustus' trophies to Amsterdam, from Van Houten to Venn diagrams, it's all in THE FAULT IN OUR PANTS. So go ahead, give it a shot. You know you want to read it more than "Paper Towns."

I am a fan of pretty much all stuff John Green. While this wasn’t his work, I enjoy a good parody.
It relies a lot on sex humor which is supposed to be a lower form, but I never claimed to be highbrow so if it is done well it is good enough for me. I can’t stand scatological humor BTW (we each have our standards I suppose).

Here is an excerpt:

“Hazel, you’re not gonna meet any guys sitting on the couch. You aren’t a little kid anymore. You’re becoming a woman. And to be perfectly blunt, every woman periodically needs some cock.” She had a point... sort of. Every woman does periodically need some cock. But at the Support Group, there was only gonna be Cancer Cock. "

That is a good line IMHO. Yes, it is a bit cheesy, but it follows the book (albeit a bit twisted – I like twisted). This would have been a four star review if the bulk of the story did this sort of job keeping with the storyline. Also, it does get a bit juvenile (which should be OK since it is a parody of a YA book), but the line between childlike and childish does get crossed for me at times.

So here are some thoughts:
1) If you loved the book and like parodies than you this short read will put a smile on your face.
2) If you loved the book so much that you can’t stand any sort of fun being made of it, please see a gastroenterologist to have that stick removed. The only thing worse than taking nothing seriously is taking everything as if it were the word of God (including the word of God).
3) If sexual situations make you uncomfortable than avoid this.
4) If you expect sexual situations in writing to get you excited this will be disappointing.
5) If you know the book and can enjoy some light hearted ribbing, than by all means it’s only $0.99.

I received this book for free via LibraryThing's Early Reviewers, and I'm so thankful I didn't spend money on this piece of garbage. This is easily the worst thing I've ever read. Oh, yeah, jokes about child porn and the Holocaust are SO HI-LARIOUS. The thing is, good parodies exist, genuinely funny ones, this is just not one of them by any means. It's vulgar for no reason (other than what I assume is the author's disgusting, immature frat boy sense of humor?) and makes a mockery out of a moving (and popular) book for easy money. Don't give this guy a cent.

Some books are so good, so special to you, that not only do you not want to tell anyone about them, but you want to destroy all other copies of them.

This is a big relatable quote for readers! But let me try with something... funnier. I mean duh, this is a parody. They're usually full oh humor, right?

Every woman does periodically need some cock.

If that didn't touch you, I don't know what can.

This book was really funny! I enjoyed reading it, even tho I thought I wasn't going to because, okay, I wasn't the biggest fan of TFIOS.

So, yeah, I laughed a lot reading this, but also had a couple of issues. Fun fact: Reading this was exactly like rereading TFIOS! That's why I'm not rating it any higher than 3 stars.

They were the exact same paragraphs of TFIOS, the author just added some dirty humor and that was it. By that part it disappointed me, but I'm also relieved that the author didn't change the essence of the original story.

But yeah, that was just the only problem I had with it. Overall it was pretty good. I liked the sexual humor that the book had and the jokes the author made.

PS: I liked even more this filthy and naughty Augustus than the original one lol.

Pay no attention to this review. I can't honestly review this book because it is a parody. The author took a really popular, well-liked book, and made fun of it, while maintaining a similar plot, character names, and even recreating dialog. To me, this is akin to plagiarism, although not entirely because the author was able to change enough of it to make it a new work, thus getting him out of trouble with the law. He does pay homage to the author of the book being parodied, by mentioning other titles he ha written and including plugs for the authors website and amazon.com--encouraging readers to buy their own copies of John Green's books instead of getting them via piracy. Anyhow, this book contains a lot of sophmoric sex humor--the kind that makes women roll their eyes and causes high school boys to laugh out loud because they find it hysterical. I did not find the book hysterical, but I have to give props to Steve Lookner for attempting to take a book that made millions cry and make it funny. I believe some topics, like kids dying from various forms of cancer cannot be made funny no matter how much sex and sexual inuendo you throw at them.

This is in fact, the biggest load of bullcrap I've ever read. The writing style is poor, and the humor is that of a perverted 13-year-old boy. The storyline failed to flow and the comments bashing very successful, talented authors was enough to set me over the edge. This was a complete waste of time.
10/10 do NOT recommend.

Many people have read this book. It's quite popular especially for girls my age. Most girls would read this book because it's the normal sad love story of two teenagers named Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters. Hazel Grace is a smart, brave, sweet girl trying to make every second of her life count, despite having thyroid cancer. Augustus is the dream boy any girl would beg to have. With his sweet, loving, and charming sense of humor, he really stands out in the book. With them both having cancer, it seems makes their relationship more interesting by having to face the same problems. But they don't let cancer get in the way of anything. From most couples I've read in books, theirs is very unique and different. I loved how they supported each other and were always there for one another. I've learned that not everyone has an easy going life. A lot of people have problems in their life that they are trying to get through, but if you have a positive mindset, nothing will stop you from living your life. This is a NEED TO READ book if you haven't already read it. I would recommend this to all girls, because I think that they could get a little something out of this. I loved this book so much! This is one of my favorites and I would read this book over and over again.

It's impossible for me to rate this book.
While reading this book I questioned every single person who recommended this book, or praised this book. I couldn't believe the author of Turtles All The Way Down was also responsible for this sexapade. I was grateful they left out so much in the movie, but completely flabbergasted that anyone wanted to make it a movie. What was wrong with everyone? John Green is a shamelessly self promoting, disgusting pervert. But it was a really fast read so I'll j just finish it, write a scathing review and unfollow John Green. So I finish it... And see the real author info... What in the what??? Click to the cover of the book. Equal parts humiliation and laughter. So you see I can't properly rate this book because the entire time I was reading it I thought I was reading the Fault in Our Stars. However I do think every one who has read the Fault in Our Stars should also read this.

Received this as a free giveaway, and assumed it would be fun. Oops.

A very weak effort, a parody not even worthy of MAD Magazine. It's a thankfully-brief run-through of the events if The Fault In Our Stars, but with dark humor and raunch piled on. The kinds of terrible jokes you might whisper to a friend during a movie, just not actually funny at all. I'm not a prude -- this just wasn't any good. Maybe teenagers would like it as their first taste of scandalous, obscene, oh-no-you-didn't shock comedy?

I don't like reading a story about sick children because it is usually pitiful and tries to make me cry though that can be just the stereotype I have. This story also made me cry many times and I sometimes felt that I couldn't read this any more, but I do like this story. I do like Hazel, Augustus, the relationship they had and the way they think about their death.

"You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful."

This is, honestly, the worst thing I've ever read.
oh yeah because jokes about child porn and the holocaust are soo funny and acceptable to make.. (its not).
The writing style is poor and scrappy with the humour of a problematic frat boy. Good parodies exist, ones which are funny, but this is not one of them.

I received a free copy of this novel from Librarything in exchange for an honest review. I laughed a lot harder then I thought I would at this book. I think it would be best read after reading The Fault In Our Stars, because then a lot of the joke are like 10x funnier then they would be on their own. I'm going to recommend this to all of the people who won’t shut up about The Fault In Our Stars, because I know this will ruin them and it'll be hilarious.

The Fault In our Pant's is obviously a Parody of The Fault In Our Stars, and as parody's usually do they make fun of the original book, takes parts from it and emphasizes what was silly about it. This added some of it's own things along the way. Hazel has to go the literal anus of Jesus, to hand out with douchebags. As we all know depression is a side effect of hanging out with douchebags. But her mother believes that Hazel needs to get some, so she's going. Thankfully her friend Isaac brought along a hot guy, Augustus Waters. Now watch as Hazel and Augustus discover the fault in their pants.

The funniest parts for me were the ones that were directly related to the original book, there were a lot of sexual jokes in this and a lot of them were funny, but they were for me on the lower scale of funniness.
A few times throughout the book, there were giant sales pitches about John Greens books. They kept telling me to buy new copies and not to illegally download the book. This I'm assuming is why John Green didn't sue the authors pant's off.

Also this is a super short read, easily read in 2-3 hours.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started The Fault in Our Pants. I had read The Fault in Our Stars and to be completely honest, I liked it but was not blown away by it as others had seemed to be. And a parody? Okay, so the author is poking fun at the book, I get that. But when I first started reading, I found myself not enjoying it and I honestly thought I would stop reading it.

I picked it up later in the day to continue reading and I am not sure what changed for me, maybe I became uncrabby at that point or took my happy pills. I don't know, but I started seeing the similarities and differences between the two books and really got into it. I ended up thoroughly enjoying the book and thought it was a hoot. You, as the reader, would not 'get' all the little jokes and tangents that the author takes without first reading the original book but if you did, and are comparing the two, it becomes absurdly funny!

I also noted that Steve has written a parody of Gone Girl, which is another very popular book, one that I read and really enjoyed. I am pretty sure I am going to have to check that one out too, now that I 'get' Steve's sense of humor.

heheheh. Oh, man.

First thing’s first: I’m severely immature for my age, and laugh at virtually anything. Please don’t hate me. This is in no way intended to make light of an emotional and heartbreaking situation or disease.

The Fault in Our Pants is obviously a parody of The Fault in Our Stars. It’s a very touchy subject for a real life disease that tears families apart, and takes away lives way too soon. I have to be honest, I read it because I needed a light read after all the hardcore books I’ve been reading with epic plots, high fantasy type of stories. Comedians make fun of anything and everything, so something like this didn’t really surprise me, but you can’t please anyone, as some of the reviews warned people away because of the topic... After reading Paper Towns by John Green, I knew this was a must read. The Fault in Ours Stars was a great book with the combination of sadness with the book's two main characters Hazel and Gus. My most liked part was the ending, in which John Green took the interesting take in the death of Augustus. This book was good and John Green needs to write more books like Paper Towns and The Fault in Our Stars soon.

A Coles Notes with sardonic bite! If you found yourself choking on the syrup of the original, you'll find the ridiculousness of this parody palate cleansing. If you don't get that this is supposed to be silly and crude, you're the silly one.

So I bought this by mistake thinking it was the actual Fault in Our Stars. Teaches me to pay attention! Anyways, I ended up reading it since I bought it not thinking much. The Fault in Our Pants by Steve Lookner ended up being a finny and irreverent parody that pokes fun at the popular novel "The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green. With its clever humor and witty satire, this book will have readers laughing out loud from start to finish.

Lookner's comedic writing style shines as he reimagines the beloved characters and iconic moments from "The Fault in Our Stars" in the most unexpected and absurd ways. The parody captures the essence of the original story while adding a unique twist that keeps readers entertained and amused.

From the title itself, it's evident that this book doesn't take itself too seriously. The humor ranges from clever wordplay to over-the-top situations, delivering a constant stream of laughs. Lookner's sharp wit and comedic timing make for an enjoyable reading experience, especially for fans of the original novel who can appreciate the parody.

While the focus is on humor, the book also manages to capture some of the emotional moments from the original story, albeit in a lighthearted and exaggerated manner. This adds an unexpected layer of depth to the parody, allowing readers to both laugh and reflect on the themes presented in "The Fault in Our Stars."

It's important to note that this book is intended as a parody and should be approached with a lighthearted mindset. Readers who are familiar with "The Fault in Our Stars" will appreciate the clever references and inside jokes scattered throughout the story. However, those who haven't read the original novel may miss out on some of the humor and context.

Okay.
He responded:
Oh, my God, stop flirting with me!

As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.

How are you?”
“I miss him.

Without pain, we couldn’t know joy.”

Augustus Waters died eight days after his prefuneral, at Memorial, in the ICU, when the cancer, which was made of him, finally stopped his heart, which was also made of him.

I’m on a roller coaster that only goes up,”

I wanted to know that he would be okay if I died.

“People always get used to beauty, though.”
“I haven’t gotten used to you just yet,” he answered, smiling.

I’m in love with you, and I’m not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.”

As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.
