Rate this book
Thrown headfirst into the middle of the ocean. Can they survive the depths long enough to uncover the truth?

Kai Flint and the newly transformed Mizu have ended up in a sea of monsters. With no way out, Kai and Mizu are forced to die and are then revived at the hands of the One-Winged Angel. Without remorse or sympathy, he sends them back to the island of Cisco that is under attack by a merfolk colony.

As Kai and Mizu explore the island, they uncover more secrets. With questions in their minds, the two mages launch a daring raid on the merfolk settlement to discover what dangers lie within Cisco.

As always, their mission is fraught with danger as monsters and other unnatural powers collide in a battle that could have world altering consequences. Can Kai and Mizu content with the Denizen of the Depths or will they perish under it’s crushing weight.

Kai Flint and the Denizen of the Depths completely blew me away. From the first page, I was hooked. The world-building is rich and immersive, the character development is top-notch, and the plot had me racing through chapters. Kai and Mizu's journey is filled with tension, twists, and just the right touch of emotional depth.

The pacing is perfect. Always moving with purpose and the balance of action, mystery, and a subtle bit of spice kept things engaging without ever feeling overdone. I loved how the stakes kept rising and the Denizen itself? Absolutely terrifying in the best way.

It reads like a Doctor Who episode - if that episode had monsters, mages, and world-altering consequences.

Brilliant.

How does it keep getting better? So intense. The world-building, the mage battles, the characters. I was once again immersed into this world where Kai and Mizu are fighting for their lives. The twists and the consequences. The depth of it all. A great world to dive into.

I enjoyed this book more than I did the first Kai book. This book can be read as a standalone (there’s a first book synopsis before you get into this book so you don’t miss anything important- which I loved) if you’d rather just dive in right here.

This book has mermaids, monsters, wizards, shapeshifters, angels, and a ton of other cool elements. Definitely give this book a try if you like any of this. I will be impatiently awaiting the rest of this series and the shadows of the dragon series from this author!!

Okay this one was a tough one to rate. There were (minor) issues with a lot of things, yet I still enjoyed this book immensely. We can't do half stars, or I would give this a 4.5 instead of rounding up to a 5. Just know that this is not a solid five.

The structure of the novel is fine. A few grammar mistakes/misspellings, but hardly the worst you will find online. These were so rare that they stand out against otherwise polished prose. Some paragraphs are repetitive, but not enough to really detract from the fun. Overall, I would say the pacing worked though a few chapters could have been trimmed down. It's listed at 306 pages. Condensing some of the repetitive parts could easily get that below 300, but that's a nitpick on my part.

What about the story and characters? You know, the good stuff!

Every mention of the One Winged Angel (the master in charge of our heroes) gave me Final Fantasy flashbacks. The book opens with our heroes splashing down in the ocean and nearly drowning. Not a bad start, though they then start having a conversation. While treading water in a churning sea... All this "danger dialogue" (think how comic characters always have time to chat during action) grated on me after a while. And yet I cared about Kai Flint, our hero. Less so about his mysterious partner, Mizu. She alternates between a defrosting ice queen type and and outright monstrous person.

One scene in particular about two-thirds really threw me off. Can't say anything without spoilers, but it made me put the book away for a moment. Total mood whiplash. Which I'm sure was the intent, but that is the risk author's take. If nothing else, this novel was clearly written with enthusiasm. The passion the creator had shines through at points. Give the series a try, thought maybe start with the first entry if you didn't already. While it's perfectly possible to follow the plot without having read the first book, I feel it would help.

So if you liked the first, check this one out. If you just want to try something a little different from the usual fantasy (there are merfolk and you get to see their city!), check it out.

"Kai Flint and the Denizen of the Depths" dives headfirst into an action-packed, magical underwater world, and it's a truly wild ride! Starting with Kai and the newly transformed Mizu being essentially resurrected and immediately thrown into a monster-infested ocean sets a relentless pace. The "One-Winged Angel" is a mysterious and intriguing figure, adding a layer of moral ambiguity as he dispatches them to a merfolk-attacked island.

The book excels at throwing its mages, Kai and Mizu, into one dangerous situation after another, pushing them to their limits. Their dynamic as they explore the island and uncover its secrets is engaging, and their daring raid on the merfolk settlement is full of tension and unexpected discoveries. The blend of magic, supernatural creatures, and high-stakes battles truly feels like a fast-paced "Doctor Who" episode, but with deeper magical lore. The author builds suspense effectively as the "Denizen of the Depths" looms, creating a palpable sense of a world-altering confrontation. If you're looking for a fantasy adventure packed with imaginative monsters, compelling magic, and a constantly escalating threat, this second installment in the Kai Flint series is definitely a winner.

Oh boy Kai, I swear his situation gets crazier and crazier. Just continue to get thrown into one situation after another. At least he seems pretty good at going with the flow 😉! Such a fast paced, adventurous book! Things go from 0-100 half the time. 🤣

I will say Mizu is growing on me, she a bit of a bitch but that’s okay. I’m sure she has lots of reasons for her choices, especially getting glimpses into her history! I really like the dynamic building between Kai and Mizu and hope that can continue…..

Monsters were good, plot was fun, characters were interesting and I cannot wait to see where Kai’s adventures take him next!

Listen up, friends, GO ADD THIS TO YOUR TBR!

When I tell you that this series is so good, you're gonna be hooked since page one. The book once was good, but this one? It's top tear. Matt has taken these characters through it all. Kai and Mizu had to go through so much to do what they were set out to do that you want to get in the book and help them. But the things you see in this book are only seen in nightmares, but the sure makes the story better. So if you wanna see what Kai Flint gets into, come dive into this series!!

I have been eagerly awaiting the next Kai Flint instalment and it did not disappoint! I devoured this wickedly fast paced and graphic story in two sittings - 6 hours today well spent!

I don't want to add spoilers, but like the first book, the author had me smiling, grouching and holding my breath. I now await the NEXT Kai Flint book because I must know what happens next!

The Kai Flint series keeps delivering! Matt Mememaro has once again crafted a thrilling adventure that blends fast-paced action, sharp wit, and jaw-dropping magic battles into an unforgettable ride. For lovers of astonishing mage duels—where raw power and razor-thin decisions determine who lives and who doesn’t—this book doesn’t disappoint. Each encounter crackles with tension and spectacle, showcasing a unique world and some brute force included.

Kai Flint remains a standout protagonist—with charming humour, recklessness, and fiercely determined to push through—making him easy to root for even as chaos erupts around him, perhaps because of him, haha. The humour really just is an essential part of Kai's character and sometimes just makes facepalm and say "Yeah, that's Kai, alright." Mememaro’s world-building continues to shine, offering fresh concepts and surprising lore that deepen the series’ rich setting.

Whether you’re a die-hard fantasy reader or just love a good story full of danger, charm, and unexpected twists, this book is a solid pick, but I do suggested reading book 1 first. It’s got the heart of classic fantasy and the energy of a modern action blockbuster. If you're craving a fantasy series that refuses to play it safe and always keeps you guessing, Kai Flint is your next obsession. Highly recommended!
