I had no idea where this story was taking me from the very start. And I LOVE when an author can transport me through such mystery! The pages kept turning despite my eyes growing tired. I had to keep reading to find out what would happen next. Frankel has quite an imagination, and it comes alive through his descriptive writing. If someone told me I'd end up caring for a character who is a hybrid cat-girl, I would've laughed. But, what do you know? I did. I love how Frankel makes his characters so real and three-dimensional. He sure knows how to capture the essence of a teenager.

Always looking forward to more of Frankel's entertainment!

This book was excellent.
Starting with the cover, which I still can't stop looking, to the perfectly written and edited words, to the plot and characters. Everything was just amazing.
From the beginning I found myself liking Harry, the description of his past was a very important subject, being an only child and victim of bullying, it marked his personality and played a significant rol in the story.
Now, Anastasia, if I find myself in her position, I wouldn't mind being half cat and half woman, but of course I understand her frustration for not knowing who did that to her and having no memory of her previous life as an entire human being.
The action scenes are incredible well written, when there was a fight I couldn't stop turning the pages, it kept me hooked to it and wanting more.
There isn't much more I can say without spoiling the story, I had an idea of what was going to happen, then I changed it at half the book, then came back to the main idea, and then something completely different happened. It was THAT good.
I recommend this book to everyone, young, adults, everyone who likes cats, dogs and bears and a great story about transgenic experiments.
I look forward to read more about J.S. maybe my next pick will be Death Bytes

A Reader’s Catnip!

I metaphorically rolled head-over-tail while reading J.S. Frankel’s Book 1 of the ‘Catnip’ series.

Sophisticated YA, Sci-Fi interwoven with realism. The reader chases protagonist, Harry Goldman, as he hightails it from Manhattan to the Catskills.

Harry is your typical skinny, bullied, geeky, highly intelligent computer nerd whose proficient research and experimentation with DNA manipulation yields a transgenic breakthrough. This in itself puts Harry’s life in danger, as well as providing a coming-of-age romantic entanglement with a “cat girl” named Anastasia.

Herein lies the catnip effect:

The author doesn’t get in the way of telling a well-written story.

Even though Harry is a weakling and athletically uncoordinated, he eventually learns to fight back “in different ways”.

The story is fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat harrowing as you witness Harry and Anastasia leaping from one hotbed to another, racing against time.

Without preaching, the author, through the characters, presents the argument for “ethical research and experimentation” with regard to the science of transposing genes from one species to another (cross-species transposition).

I highly recommend ‘Catnip’ for its all-around allure.

Book 52 of my Goodreads Challenge

WOW what an A~MAZ~ING book cover I was hooked immediately. The blurb caught my attention too, having at one point worked in the research industry in transgenics myself (on a very small and regulated project).

Teenager Harry Goldman is a science nerd, he loves researching into transgenics and DNA. Unfortunatley he finds himself in trouble and ends up in jail but the FBI release him on the condition that he assist them find a mutant cat girl, possibly a Russian spy called Anastasia.

This is a crazy, fantastical tale of weird creatures, created by scientific experiments. I LOVED it. Very highly recommended

My oh my what a journey! This book is absolurely amazing! The main character, as well as all the supporting characters, are so real you can not help but to connect with them. I really took my time reading this authors' gift. And that is what it is, a "gift". Full of action, intrigue and wonder, This gift has many themes, but my favorite is: "Everything in life is a gamble". Thank you Jesse. Forge on! ~Linie Sherrod

Fascinating premise for a book.
The overall concept for the book was exceptionally interesting and dragged me into the story immediately. The scientific explanations were spot on and well explained. I enjoyed the plot, though sometimes I felt it could've been paced a smidgeon faster. I finished it in one sitting and am looking forward to discovering how the story goes in the next of the series.

Really great young adult, new adult or adult (!) fast paced action packed sci-fi thriller that's hard to put down. Love the main character strong male lead. The level of detail and 'Miss Kitty' cat quirks are great. Unique plot - would make a great movie.

Just as a hypothesis develops into a theory before becoming a fact so unfolds the story of Catnip.

Harry was a child prodigy who simply didn't fit in at school and rather work on developing his own scientific thoughts. His father worked in transgenics and his mother in chemistry so it all came second nature to him. He was working on his own thing in college labs from a young age; doing has own thing, working with the machines and figuring out formulas that even the professors didn't have the knowledge to understand. This was all well and good but knowledge can be a dangerous thing, especially when others see you as a that. And this Harry figured out the hard way when he was imprisoned for his thoughts. Granted they drummed up phony charges but ultimately it was his abilities to think beyond that of others which got him into trouble.

His imprisonment began his journey into the unknown and being led into trouble no body could ever dream of - until somebody did. After being beckoned to FBI headquarters he encountered many things that should only exist in fantasy, and the female who would come to mean much more to him than he ever expected. Together they face turmoil and danger at every turn, meeting some interesting and friendly faces along the way, never knowing who or where to turn. But with one main goal the entire time-find the truth and right the wrongs somebody else made.

This book was so well written, it grabbed me and pulled me in from the start. It is complex in its entirety and laid out in a way that you feel like you are experiencing everything as Harry does. This is my first book by this author but it will not be my last.

Some favorite lines:

"There are some things better left alone."

"'You told me yesterday you thought I was a friend, ... Did you mean it?' ... 'Yeah I did. I like your smell, if that counts for anything.'"

"Talk about animal attraction in the first degree! It was as if her body gave off its own aura, a kind of drug that enticed him."

“Man, there’s a first time for everything.
Who said New York cops are rude?”

“You’re on my property and this aomination is an affront to my eyes,” she answered. “If you want to live then you’ll tell me who you are and you’ll do it right quick!”

"In his last second of consciousness, he
hoped his death would be a merciful one."

"Well, Captain Obvious to the rescue. They’d been captured and he was pretty sure what would happen next."

"He might have been sick and twisted, but he was still a genius."

"Everything his father had done and everything he’d done, ... had been stolen and perverted by this psycho and his gang of ghouls."

"He was powerless to do anything, and what choice did he have?"

"Everything in life was a gamble."

It's been a minute... far too long a time since last I had this much a good time reading a book. A story has the chance of striking a chord of interest... perhaps even a good line or two of dialog between characters... but Frankel wraps me up in an "I Don't Know" Blanket and adds to the number of good-time reads I've had.

Excellent!

You know an author is having an effect on you when you read a Prologue, that isn't a prologue... it's Chapter One... but it's TOTALLY a prologue! Three characters are introduced here but only one continues into the story... and you miss the other two! That's when you know you're engaged.

Hook, line, and sinker!

Another bold step on the part of the author was the trope-dodge performed on one of the main characters. Anastasia has her point of discovery, but she's not going through the normal stages of figuring herself out... because she's too busy figuring herself out! The story may be a beginning for Harry but Anastasia is at least on her second or third lap when the reader first sees her. The mystery of origins is made more alluring and more evasive... and eventually more dangerous and painful in the reveal

The only drawbacks I can report would be the one or two places where the storytelling lost a little texture and things were made a little convenient for Harry... and I wanted more animalistic action and engagement from the transgenic characters.

Onward to the next book in the series... "Rise of the Transgenics"

I was given a free copy of Catnip by the lovely author J. S. Frankel. This has in no way influenced my rating of the novel.

Just like a cat, Catnip captured my attention from beginning to end. It is centred around teen genius Harry Goldman who theorises about cross-genetic transmutations for fun. Sounds complicated, right? Well, it turns out someone has been putting the transgenic theories into practice, and thus Harry meets Anastasia, cat-girl. They're on an adventure against time, Feds and a monstrous bear-like creature to try and find a way to reverse Anastasia's genes. I was left happily surprised by the ending.

What I love about Frankel's writing, is his ability to create such emotive and complex characters who don't fit into the usual mould. His characters have their own strengths and weaknesses which make their actions seem realistic. I particularly liked Anastasia as she is strong, yet fragile in some ways. Her history was not something I have read before, and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more about her in 'Rise of the Transgenics'.

Frankel was able to create a believable storyline with transgenic science and I can't wait to find out what else he comes up with. Catnip was fast paced, action packed and a thoroughly enjoyable read. I would suggest this novel to ages 12 and up.

***Minor Spoilers---Mostly Same As Description***
J.S. Frankel

Let me just start by saying that if the words "science" and "genius" don't make any sense when put next to each other, I completely relate. Science has never been, and will most likely never be, my thing. However, reading this book and words like "trangenics" and "DNA helix" and understanding what they meant made me feel like a genius.

In Catnip, each of the words that could be seen as confusing are explained so well that the story isn't hard to follow even though it may seem like it, something that I feel deserves a round of applause. On top of all that sciency jazz, the book is well written as well.

Harry was developed in such a way that anyone could relate him to someone they knew in high school (or know, if you're still in it like me). His personality is cute in a way because he's just so awkward, but you can't laugh at him for it because he had the brain of a mad scientist at sixteen. And his experience with girls? One hundred percent relatable.

Anastasia, on the other hand, is not awkward. Right from the get-go, she's feisty and straight forward and knows exactly what she wants from every person she talks to. The only problem is, she doesn't know who she is. Aside from her outward, feline appearance, she has no idea who she's supposed to be, save for her name. All she knows is she woke up one day and she was a cat. Only, not really.

When Harry and Anastasia meet, you know right away that they are going to be the couple. Their meeting and her acceptance of him is well-written, and the intentions were good through the story with their relationship.

However, as a romantic, I would have liked a little bit more development between them before anything actually happened. It seemed a little fast paced, and while I can take into account that their relationship is not the main focus and that the book is meant to be short, it is also the first in a five book series. Ergo, I feel there was a little room to space the relationship out a bit more. It's minor, however, and I don't think it affected the quality of the book at all.

The book in itself was entertaining, the characters were relatable and likable, and the plot of the story was relatively easy to follow. I feel like the book had something to offer to every age group, and I would definitely recommend it. I would say the book is geared towards those between fourteen (just for some minor content) and eighteen, but anyone would find it enjoyable.

I look forward to reading the rest of the series in the future.

What a fabulous book!
Whilst weaving a 'tail' of science and madness, JS Frankel also raises some poignant questions.
The cat-girl is incredible, her journey no less so.
Anastasia with amnesia; lol

I don't want to say too much for fear of spoilers.
But transgenics is the theme, with a slight love story running alongside. Plenty of action, and the men in black suits.

Really well written; give it a go, you won't be sorry.

Total Score: 5/5

Summary:

There are many people like Harry who don't feel that they fit in, but Harry was lucky to have a family who loved and stood by him. It helped that Harry's father's line of interest was the same as Harry's, transgenic research. It was terrible how Harry was bullied at school, but his unique form of payback was diabolical and effective causing him to be home schooled, which was what he wanted all along. The way his independent research lead him to first be incarcerated and eventually forced him to work for the FBI trying to unravel the mystery of a subject who had undergone genetic manipulation, but in the end it gave him the one thing he never thought he could have, a girlfriend, Anastasia. The only problem was the government underestimated what two young people could do and they soon learned to regret it. There was more to Anastasia than her altered appearance of a cat than Harry or she thought. The two team up with another genetically altered human as the fight to stay alive and find a way to try change them back. The futuristic feel to the book was woven into a plot filled with enough suspense and drama all held within an incredible love story. This is one book that shouldn't be missed!

I just finished reading Catnip by Jesse Frankel, a definite 5-star Young Adult novel. I will honestly say it is a book unlike any other I have read. I would categorize it as a unique work of Young Adult Science Fiction, which is not a genre I frequently read, but the promise of a sweet and honest, if not slightly awkward, teenage romance beneath the intricately detailed science fantasy plot, intrigued me. Sometimes I start reading a book for one reason, which for me is usually my desire to read romance, and I find so much more than I ever expected. Catnip provided me with this type of reading experience. I won’t try to say that the romance wasn’t important to the plot, as Frankel created a relationship between the two main characters where love transcended the importance of mere physical attraction. How refreshing for two young people to find each other despite not being the typical specimens of youthful beauty!

In Catnip, I found a movie in a book. The manner in which Frankel writes causes me to envision each chapter as if it were a movie scene. There is a great deal of thrilling action, side characters with vivid description and unique language, and well-described settings that keep the visual pictures moving through my head.

Further, as I read Catnip, I was awed by the amount of scientific research Frankel must have had to conduct in order to put forth such a knowledgeable and well-explained (for a non-scientist-type like me) work of fiction. Prior to reading Catnip, the concept of transgenic research was totally foreign to me but I learned about it without any difficulty, thanks to Frankel’s clear explanations. And it is interesting science!!

I am a huge fan of a plot twist and in this department, also, Jesse Frankel delivers. Catnip was actually a journey that I took with the two main characters, Harry and Anastasia, but it was by no means a straight and even path. The direction continually changed; I learned to expect the unexpected, and mixed in with all of this plot twisting was no shortage of blood and guts! I think adults and teens who enjoy horror aspects to a book, will be kept on the edge of their seat by Frankel’s characters’ adventures.

Don’t miss this compelling YA read that features romance, interesting science, adventure, major plot twists, and even a bit of horror. Highly recommended.

CATNIP by Jesse Seth Frankel
A Book Review by AZ Perez
September 2023

It’s a pleasure and an enriching experience to buy and read a variety of book genres. I am privileged and indeed grateful to have the opportunity to read them.

The curious story of this fantasy, science fiction, young adult novel entitled Catnip by author Jesse Seth Frankel has a lot to manifest about our existence on this planet, now and in the future!

A telling book delving the human nature, its motivation and flaws; gravitating on the subject of human genetic engineering, its implications and ethical concerns; both good and bad; and the known, the unfolding, and the blind aspects. It is indeed a concern!

The author must have loved cats a lot as he has captured and penned narratives expressing their very essence and nature: the way cats reveal their adoration and imprint to their owners; their power to detect danger and their obsession with hygiene; among others. Indeed, cats are almost like humans conversely speaking!

The narratives are dynamic like that of Yin and Yang. It is silky, flowing. I have no idea that I am already reading to its very last pages. It has a lean and sharp description of settings. Outstanding are the pages interweaving and interlacing the development and transformation of the psyche and nature of the characters. It has a riveting arc of progression of its action-packed plot and subplots spiced up with young adult romance.

The pages of the book sparingly cover the necessary elements of the tale. Never deviating from its desired direction. The resolution is sensible and cathartic. There is retribution. And something to look forward to is a bundle of promising plots, and more enthusing transgenic characters both heroes and villains with whom Harry and Anastasia shall encounter as this Catnip Book Series progresses!

A book that is curious, significant, and very entertaining to read! Young - adult and even mature readers alike will absolutely love this book! Congratulations author Jesse Seth Frankel!

I was provided a free copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Catnip by J.S.Frankel: From the mind that brought you Twisted and The Tower; J.S.Frankel brings to life a mystery that flings action, adventure, intrigue and science at you by the bushel. Harry is a teenage boy that meets Anastasia and they fall head over heals for each other. Well, not so much. Harry Goldman is a teenage boy, that's true, but he is also a genius specializing in Transgenic Engineering. Anastasia is a young lady, yet she is also a hybrid cat-girl. Having been genetically altered by a mysterious scientist, she and Harry embark on a journey to find the truth as well as work out any feelings they may have for each other. Along the way they seem to leave a trail of death and devastation. Will they find the truth to Anastasia's condition, will they find this mystery mad-man?

Ok, so honesty. I was not sucked in. I enjoyed myself, but I didn't have that overwhelming urge to finish the book in one sitting, or pick it back up whenever I had a minute to spare. I did like the characters, Frankel gave you just enough through out to keep you enticed. Originally I thought the story of a genetically altered cat-girl and a nerdy teenage boy trying to uncover the big bad secret was a bit far-fetched, and was honestly wondering how it was going to be pulled off. But the more I stuck with it the happier I became.

It’s been a while since I started reading a book that grabbed my attention from the very beginning; some YA novels are too ‘young’ for me in terms of general content of the books but ‘Catnip’ had my mind working on the perils of genetic manipulation and modification and coming up with my own list of ‘what ifs.’ A great topic to spark my nerdy imagination! What happens when a young, genetic science genius meets the terrifying product of research that was meant to heal?

J.S. Frankel’s characters are well fleshed out and made me care about the plight they find themselves in through no fault of their own. As the story progresses, both Harry and Anastasia go through their own changes with Harry pushing aside his fear to help his new friends and Anastasia learning to trust him. Anastasia is a mystery when the tale first begins but the author fills in the known details of the life that led up to the trauma of her situation at just the right moments to ratchet up the urgency that she and Harry face and the book wraps up very nicely on a positive note that left me wondering what happens next for this pair.

Frankel is a natural storyteller; his narrative well written with a great sense of flow, and I’ll definitely be reading more of his books.

Oh My God! This was definitely my favorite book from J. S. Frankel so far, although I loved his past works. But, seriously, it was so original and full of action and I absolutely loved the whole espionage intrigue. Absolute work of genius!

You have mad scientist, mutants, FBI agents, sewers. What more do you need for a perfect plot? I was truly amazed at the intricacy of the story.

As usual, I loved the hidden message that all his books have. This time it was: no one should play God. It started with a very smooth foreshadowing in the first chapters of the book and culminated with the last chapter where the hero meets the result of playing God. I think that was one powerful message and a very inspiring one. All J.S. Frankel's books excel in this aspect. They're not just for entertainment sake, but actually teach you precious life lessons. And I'll never get tired of saying that, with the risk of sounding like a robot. Believe me, once you read them you understand and you will feel the need to, likewise, tell the world about this.

There were some emotional scenes that almost made me cry, making the story even more enjoyable. I think Jesse's works are getting better and better and I'm really looking forward to the next one.

I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review. The concept interested me and I contacted the author and volunteered to review it, even though this is not my normal reading genre.
This delightful story hooked me in within the first few pages--the homeless man scene could have been a tad bit shorter--and kept me interested. The theme of transgenic experimentation made this story a bit different than most animal hybrid human stories. It was told in such a manner that I did not have to stretch too far to believe it could happen and that helped immerse me in the book.
The author did a good job of developing the characters of both the protagonist (boy) and the supporting character (girl). I was pleased that instead of making the girl a helpless pawn, the author presented her as a thinking, caring, strong person in her own right while not taking anything away from the boy.
This is a good example of how books can be written that encompass positive character models for both gender readers. Kudos to the author.

ow, what a read. I was glued on from page one. I didn't wanted to stop, but i had to do other things as well.

Harry, the eighteen year old genius, like his father, was working on illegal genetic research, to combine animal DNA and human DNA to cure some illnesses, as he believed it would work.
But he was caught by the FBI and put in prison.

But when the FBI found a transgenic Cat-Women, they got Harry out of prison for research, what she is and what is to be done with her.

From that point on, Harry's quiet world collapsed and a new, very dangerous started.

With the KGB , another transgenic bear-man, who wants to kill them, to another friendly, like Anastasia, Dog-man, to a mad scientist, who created them to be spies.

After nearly killed for several times, but always escaping just in time, they were again picked up by the FBI. this Time Harry agrees to work with them to reverse Anastasia, as she had evolved into a full cat, back to her human form.
Will he succeed? He has great hope.
Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

This is the first book I've read by this author, and I think he's succeeded quite well in portraying a main character who is at once very different from his teenage peers, but also an ordinary sufferer of teenage 'afflictions'. Harry is a prodigy, which makes him think like an old man on many areas of life. He speaks like someone far older too, which would make for unrealistic dialogues if it wasn't for the genius part. I got minor flashbacks to the good old TV days of Dr Doogie a few times during reading :)
There's action, conspiracy and crazy scientists in this novel, and the pace isn't too hurried - there's time for moments of deeper thinking too, and not least young love. I did find a couple of the more romantic and tender scenes a bit short and awkward, and I would have liked to see more focus on the chemistry between the two sweethearts.
Finally, I'd like to mention the beautiful cover, which looks very realistic even though it portrays a 'human cat'.

Author copy for fair review.
A very promising start to the series and one I will definitely be reading more of. This is surprising as I am not really a big YA fan, but I did enjoy Catnip. The characters were people I could empathize with, despite one of them being a boy genius and his love interest a genetic engineering experiment. I appreciated their moments of awkwardness, the energy felt just right. They were well rounded and interesting and it was easy to like them. Vibrant, clever, and funny, I rooted for them all the way.
The pacing was fast, or maybe the story just dragged me along with it, but it was a fun action read. A good story to get lost in for a few hours. The science stuff was artfully delivered and where some reviewers felt it slowed the story down a little, I did not find that at all.
This book delivers an interesting sci-fi/fantasy concept that leaves its protagonists with room to grow into the series.

I have read three of Jesse Frankel's books and I must say, I've enjoyed every one of them.
Catnip is no different. It is such an original story. I've never read one quite like it.
The characters are fun-loving characters that everyone can relate to. They talk among themselves like all young people would. I especially loved the way that Harry asked Anastasia to be his girlfriend. He asked in such a way that I could picture my son doing it the same way. It made me giggle. (in a good way!)
Anastasia's personality is very fun-loving and serious, even a little sketchy in areas. Much like a cats and fits her character well!
I think you will enjoy Jesse Frankel's Catnip. It kept my attention all the way through and the adventure...? I won't give it away...you will have to read and enjoy!

I received this free ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Catnip follows Harry Goldman, a teenage DNA researcher, who is thrown into jail for illegal transgenic research. He's then freed by the FBI in exchange for his assistance in an investigation. Harry is introduced to Anastasia, who is the product of similar illegal transgenic research, and being held captive by the FBI. Of course, things get out of control and Harry must find a way to save Anastasia and himself.

Catnip has a very interesting plot and the overall story flows well. Harry is the lovable, nerdy, prodigy child and Anastasia has just the right amount of attitude. This is a great YA read, and I hope there will be a sequel!

I have to admit I'm picky with books. If it doesn't hold my attention in the first couple of pages usually I wont finish it. However this was not the case with this book.

I bought it on the 23rd of this month started reading it around 10pm. I literally could not put it down...I was hooked, mesmerized and in the story itself after the first page. I ended up staying up all night and finishing it at 620 in the morning. Yeah, it was that good.

If you like fantasy, science fiction, action and suspense, then read this book. I mean who doesnt like mad scientist, mutants, FBI agents, and Catgirl with an attitude?

Im patiently waiting for Catnip 2. Well pretending to be patient. ;)

A fast-paced, young adult action-packed page-turner that will have you hooked from the start. Harry Goldman is a researcher of transgenics, the science of using animal DNA in a human to cure disease. The FBI put him in jail for manipulating DNA and whilst he’s there he meets an unusual character - a cat lady, who is an Ussuri breed of cat, named Anastasia. A love story between Harry and Anastasia runs parallel to the main theme in the book. The plot twists and turns and was well written making me feel like I was actually in Manhattan and the Catskills Mountains with Harry and Anastasia. Be prepared to meet a feisty cat and a range of other interesting characters.

MEOW!!!!

My girlfriend bought this book and couldn't put it down. And she finished it pretty much in one day. She literally wouldn't shut up about it. She posted about it on Facebook, Twitter, and her blog that she is never on. So it had to be good right?? So I stole her iPad and began reading it myself. I too couldn't put it down. I too finished it in one day. Amazing to say the least. It has everything you would want in a book. It keeps you hooked and always wanting more. Recommend? Definitely. Cant wait for Catnip 2. :)

Hello Jesse,

Here's what I want to write about your book

Jesse's 'Catnip' holds cool, snappy dialogue. Great chapters that slide together, are short for those younger generation ADD quicksilver minds. A cleverly, ingenious plot holds credence in storyline, whilst appealing to the misspent emotions, and perspectives, of a captive audience. Mainly amusing, focusing on dialogue capture, this first in the series explains why some of us need fantasy, and imagination, to revisit our halcyon days of youth. It's a good starter, the series has begun...

Ok?
