I received a complimentary copy of this book from Reedsy Discovery. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

Everyone, regardless of age, will make mistakes; they are inevitable and come in all sizes. For kids, coloring outside the lines would equal a minor mistake. Shattering a window would equal a bigger mistake. While some mistakes might feel like the world is ending, they all amount to the same thing – a learning experience. Scribbaloo, a magical creature from Color Island, learns this valuable lesson in Scribbaloo and the Color Cruncher.

Scribbaloo possesses a magnificent, magical ability; whatever they draw comes to life! That sounds amazing unless you are like Scribbaloo, an individual who gets easily frustrated when you make an error. Scribbaloo blew his stack when their design didn’t turn out precisely how they envisioned. His star-shaped friend Glittergleam tried calming him down and encouraged them to try again, but Scribbaloo was too angry to listen. He started angry drawing, and those dark, scribbly lines merged to create The Color Cruncher! This transformation was a powerful metaphor for how unchecked anger can lead to unintended consequences.

The Color Cruncher was weirdly adorable. It resembled a ball of steel wool or a large ball of dryer lint with arms, legs, googly eyes, and black felt for angry-looking eyebrows. While it was cute, its sinister mission was not. It planned to devour all colors, and there was only one way to stop it: Scribbaloo needed to fetch the Golden Crayon up on Crayon Peak. The quest required Scribbaloo to draw, but his drawings kept hitting a snag. He knew no good came from losing his temper, so he took a moment to collect himself and tried again. What a good example for kids to model!

I loved the story’s cute rhymes, particularly the word paired with “unlucky.” The illustrated page accompanying the surprise word, which I will keep vague for the sake of the surprise, was stupendous. I also liked how the artist brought the writer’s words to life. The Paintbrush Forest was simple but very creative. And when Scribbaloo started to cry, my heart went out to the little red creature.

I recommend Scribbaloo and the Color Cruncher for households and classes with children ages three to eight. It is a wonderfully written and illustrated story that entertains and delivers a powerful message: It’s okay to make mistakes. Mistakes are how we learn. So, the next time you mess up, take a calming breath and try again.

Scribbaloo and the Color Cruncher is a colorful, heartwarming picture book that helps kids embrace mistakes and see them as part of learning.

The illustrations are a highlight, bold, expressive, and a great visual metaphor for the emotional journey. The story is engaging and even includes a QR code for a free activity book to extend the fun.

Minor areas for improvement include slightly simplifying the text for younger readers and giving more backstory to the Color Cruncher or Scribbaloo’s companion. Still, the book succeeds in delivering a positive, empowering message with charm and creativity.

A fun, visually rich story that encourages kids to be brave, creative, and kind to themselves, even when they make mistakes.

This is such a cute book! I'm always looking for quality picture books for my kids and this one is fun but also teaches a lesson in having patience and working through frustrations when you make mistakes.

Some parts were reminiscent of Harold and the Purple Crayon. Like Harold's crayon leads him on all kinds of adventures, in Scribaloo, he uses his to help him create things he needs too.

Rhyming books are essential for young kids, in my opinion, and this one is great on that aspect, it flows smoothly as a read aloud (and definitely makes it fun to do voices as you read!).

The illustrations are bright, fun, and attention getting.

Add this to your "books that teach a light life lesson" repertoire!

As soon as I saw the cover and the vibrant illustrations, I wanted to read this book! So did my six year old. They were amazed! The scenery and imagery of staying on the art theme was impressive.

As we went through each page my child, as well as myself, can easily relate to making mistakes.

We loved the creative, non- human characters. My child loved, loved the antagonist and immediately wanted to draw it!

The finally tag line in the story boosted my child's confidence to know that mistakes are all part of growing their talent.

Thank you for sharing your idea and putting into a reality. Great addition to any library for young old.

Scribbaloo and the Color Cruncher is a delightful and meaningful picture book that celebrates creativity, empathy, and courage. When a gloomy creature begins stealing all the color from the world, Scribbaloo the bunny sets out to stop him — not with anger, but with art and kindness.

The illustrations are vibrant and engaging, making it a visual treat for kids, while the message is powerful: sometimes, the best way to fight darkness is with a little light and a lot of love.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Perfect for ages 3–8, this book is a great conversation starter about emotions, self-expression, and the importance of standing up for what’s beautiful in the world. Highly recommended for parents, teachers, and young artists!

Scribbaloo and the Color Cruncher by Ben P Fisher & Tadgh Bentley is an excellent children's book with adorable illustrations that my kids and I all absolutely loved!

It teaches kids the importance of not giving up when they make mistakes and encourages them to learn from those mistakes and try again! Such a perfect message of perseverance that every child needs to hear and what a better way to learn it than with this beautiful children's book!

I hope everyone grabs a copy for them and their kids to share on April 29th when it becomes available!

A wonderful book about not giving up

My son gives this two thumbs up! He liked the story and the color cruncher (especially what happens to him in the end)!

As a parent, I love this book helps kids understand and accept that making mistakes is just part of the learning process and while we should be mindful of what we do and say it’s important not to beat ourselves up when we aren’t perfect. Illustrations are lovely and together with the story help share an abstract concept that makes sense and is relatable. And it’s a great reminder for grown ups too 😉

I recommend this book to other families with young children 😊

A Very Important Life Lesson

This wonderful book helps children learn a very important life lesson. We all make mistakes, it’s how we respond to those mistakes that shape our character. This book teaches children (and let’s face it, adults can learn this too) the proper way to bounce back from the frustration of making a mistake. The beautiful art shapes the story and breathes life into the delightful book.

LOVE the message …

Who doesn’t make mistakes?! As adults, we know it’s part of the learning process, but for some kids, making mistakes is debilitating. Sometimes it keeps kids from even trying. This book, in very clever rhyme and colorful characters, guides a child past the fear, encouraging a “never give up” attitude, and ending with a positive outcome. I even know adults who could use this message!

Fantastic! Scribbaloo and the Color Cruncher is a fun story with a powerful message about learning through mistakes. My kids were fully engaged in the adventure and loved the colorful illustrations, but what I appreciated most was how the book gently teaches children that it’s okay to get things wrong; that’s how we grow and learn! A wonderful read that’s both entertaining and meaningful. Highly recommend!

This is a delightful book that demonstrates the power of friendship when you are having a tough time. Scribbaloo hates making mistakes and worries about letting others down. His friend Glittergleam is always there to gently remind him that everything will be okay. He does not need to be perfect. The illustrations are terrific and bring the story to life. I highly recommend this book and look forward to sharing it with my grandchildren.

This is a great children’s book that teaches a valuable lesson: actions have consequences. However that isn’t the end of the story, as mistakes can be corrected!

My children loved this book, they were engaged with the story the whole way through (and didn’t interrupt to ask a million questions like they often do). And the illustrations are fun and colorful!

Scribbaloo is a delightfully playful story written in rhyming verse. Scribbaloo doesn’t like to make mistakes, especially Color Crunching Monster mistakes. With his patient and understanding best friend by his side he conquers the monster, and comes to understand that mistakes are how we learn. This is a fun book with great illustrations and a valuable message.

Lovely story
Excellent story of Scribbaloo who accidentally creates the colour cruncher that destroys all the colour in Color Island. Scribbaloo is determined to make things right. But he is doubtful of whether things can ever become right. Beautiful illustrations and lovely read both for kids and adults. Enjoyed it.

Breaking down big feelings!

Ben has written such a great book that takes the big (defeating) feelings of perfectionism and mistakes and gives kids tools to break down those feelings, process them and persevere in the moment but also in the future!

So vivid and beautiful

I loved the story and the magical world. Sometimes we all act as Scribbaloo but that’s okay. Mistakes are fine as long as you keep going and learn something from them.

Everyone makes mistakes.
Scribbaloo gets frustrated thinking making mistakes are a reason to give up, but Glitter Gleam teaches Scribbaloo to learn from them and try again. A cute and wonderfully illustrated book that helps teach a lesson. We are not our mistakes.

The art style and colors in this book were a very nice style to look at and really helped add to the story. The rhyming each page also had was a cute add to the story and also would help children recognize the pattern or rhyming and what words match one another in sound.
