I recently read this, after seeing the first episode of the anime.
Ousama Rankingu or, The ranking of Kings, follows Boji, a prince to-be, who also happens to be deaf and mute. Compared to his younger brother Daida, he is pretty much a failure and the kingdom don't seem to hold him in very high regard. Boji meets a thieving black blob called Kage, who after repeatedly manipulating him to give his clothes, develops affection for Boji.
The first volume of this manga was quite slow , but I can see the plot coming together.
The art style is quirky and simple, slightly different from the amazing animation of the anime, but decent in its own right.

Para ser un manga para todo público, incluso muy considerado para niños, toca temas súper importantes como la aceptación y confianza en uno mismo y seguir persiguiendo nuestras metas.

Este volumen nos habla de un pequeño príncipe primogénito que es sordo, por esta razón muchas veces es menospreciado por los demás, incluso por la reina y su pueblo, creyendo que es débil o tonto. Un día se encuentra con un ser del pueblo sombra que logra ver su potencial y lo ayuda a demostrar a los demás que él es digno de la corona.

En esta serie de volúmenes podemos ver como el príncipe va construyendo su vida a base de aventuras junto a su amigo, quien también quiere sobrevivir a la injusta exterminación de su especie.

Un lindo manga para comenzar a leer, eso si tienen muchos volúmenes, pero se lee super rápido.

Dec. 24, 2021: Fascinating storyline! I've never fall in love with a manga series that has a fairytale theme to it! This storyline captivates and immerses me! Getting to know the characters little by little excites me as I turn to read every page. Character writing and development is astounding! The narration — exquisite! Plot progression — magnificent!

For reading purposes, I'm adding my overall thoughts of Volumes 1 to 12 of Ōsama Ranking on Goodreads. I want to add my overall impression of the 1st Part of this series, as well as some of my thoughts on the 2nd Part (which is still being written as we speak and at the time of writing this review (Dec. 24, 2021) by this series' incredible mangaka — Sōsuke Tōka himself!

1st Part of the series - Fascinating and incredible storyline! I fell in love with the characters. The 1st Part presents this classic fairytale feeling to it, especially in the 1st half of Part 1 (written in Volumes 1 to 6): "Good versus Evil". No isekai/"reincarnated characters" trash storyline. No explicit "ecchi" themes presented unlike what many anime and manga are dipping today for increased viewership/readership.

Does this series have heavy themes? Definitely! But, it's exactly because of those heavy themes and 1960s to 1980s cartoonish art styles that made me fall in love with the series (both anime and manga formats).

Spoiler Alert in the paragraphs below:

Towards the latter half of Part 1, good and evil merged and it became difficult to side on some of the well-beloved characters. I'm not sure anymore if Miranjo (the Magic Mirror lady) is evil for the sake of being evil. Her backstory was revealed towards the middle of Part 1 and she felt pitiable!

Same with the tragic backstory of King Bosse and Queen Sheena! We didn't get much backstory with Queen Sheena, but I felt sorry towards King Bosse when the closeup was made on him. When some of the manga panels focused on him, the author showed the complexity of Bosse!

From his tangled romantic feelings with Miranjo and Queen Hilling to the sacrifices he's been making to Bojji and Daida, it showed how hurt he is as a father and a lover! Bosse overlooking Miranjo's evil deeds is another complex storyline that adds to the series' depth and dynamic character development!

The evil characters in this series did several horrific deeds. But, there are rooms of atonement on some of the characters that were initially presented as evil. The redemption arcs could have been interesting side storylines that the author could have done to present those redemption arcs for pitiable characters in Part 2. But sadly, my interest in Part 2 dipped at its lowest!

2nd Part of the series - The sad part of this series for me is when Part 1 ended because Part 2 must begin. I hate Part 2! I know it's still being written, but everything I love about the classic fairytale theme being penned on a Japanese manga format is stripped in Part 2.

Don't get me wrong as best boy Bojji and his best friend Kage are still sticking around. But Part 2 is exploring the Ranking of Kings side of this world. Therefore, more new characters. More knights in shining armors. More of the Netherworld convicts and their adventures on the medieval era. At the very least, Desha and Despa still make relevant appearances in Part 2.

But, I'm less interested on those characters. And it's sad to know that my favorite characters from Part 1 like Daida, Miranjo, Queen Hilling, Domas, etc. are barely making appearances/forgotten in Part 2! But, it's understandable that they're almost out of the picture in Part 2. The story has to revolve around Bojji and Kage. And Bojji must find a way to retrieve his strength as a giant in one way or another (an unresolved plot thread in Part 1).

Maybe, it's too early to judge. But, perhaps I'm being biased because Part 2 stripped away the favorite characters I've been rooting for a long time when Part 1 was slowly being shown in the anime.

Skim read the Korean web version of Volumes 1 to 12 of this fabulous Japanese manga on Manatoki118.net. Will read it again when I have time to read the translated English scans by Home Hero on Manga4Life.com.

I don't read or write Korean, but Google Translate helped me understand some of the dialogue in the word bubbles. And I don't use Google Translate on all of the word bubbles; just on some dialogues with prominent manga panels where major events are emphasized.

My knowledge of the series through the anime is good enough which allowed me to follow and understand the events that happened after recent episodes of the anime (which is currently at episode 11 out of 23 for Season 1 at the time of writing this review).

By the way, if Ōsama Ranking was not categorized as the #1 show in the Airing category, I would not have tried it. But, I'm so happy that I did try this show, and now, I'm craving to read the complete English translations of the manga.

Oh comme j’avais hâte de découvrir cette histoire en manga! J’ai découvert l’anime en début d’année et ce fut un énorme cou pde coeur. Ce n’est peut être pas l’anime le plus fou, avec un budget incroyable qui vous en met plein les yeux. Mais cet anime reste vraiment incroyable. C’est surtout par la profondeur de l’histoire que ce manga est exceptionnel. Dès les premiers épisodes, je suis tombée amoureuse de cette histoire. C’est touchant, c’est mignon, on a de l’action tout de même. Et surtout, mention spéciale pour le prince Bojji, un énorme coup de coeur pour ce petit prince sourd et muet qui m’a touché en plein coeur. Lorsque le manga a été annoncé, j’avais tellement mais tellement hâte de découvrir cette histoire en papier. Et ce premier tome a été sans surprise un gros coup de coeur.

On se retrouve dans le royaume de Bosse, royaume en péril.. En effet son fondateur, le Roi Bosse est gravement malade et son héritier, le prince Bojji est très loin d’avoir le profil pour prendre sa place.. Il est sourd et muer, il n’est doté que de très peu de force, il est incapable de manier l’épée, il est la cible de toutes les moqueries.. S’il accède au trône le pays est promis à la déchéance dans le classement des rois. Ce classement a comme principal critère la puissance des souverains. Et pour le coup, c’est plus le prince Daida qui est remporte le soutient populaire. Et pourtant, malgré tout ça, le prince Bojji a toujours le sourire. Même quand une mystérieuse ombre lui demande de lui donner tout ses vêtements, c’est avec plaisir qu’il s’exécute parce que pour la première fois de sa vie, le jeune prince a un partenaire de conversation!

Comme je le disais un peu plus haut, le prince Bojji a été un énorme coup de coeur. J’ai eu tellement de peine pour lui, de voir la façon dont tout le monde le traite, toutes les moqueries qu’il subit etc. C’est vraiment un crève coeur de le voir comme ça. Mais j’aime énormément sa combativité, il garde toujours le sourire malgré tout ça, il garde la face devant les gens mais craque souvent en privé. Je l’admire pour ça parce que clairement garder le sourire alors que vous êtes affreusement triste et touché par ces moqueries, encore plus à son jeune âge, c’est vraiment remarquable. Il a une force de caractère impressionnante et il est doté d’un sacré courage. Vraiment je suis super fan de ce personnage, c’est une vraie révélation . J’aime beaucoup aussi Ombre, même si au début il a de mauvaises intentions envers Bojji, il va finir par le suivre et va découvrir tout ce qu’il subit au quotidien. Et à partir de ce moment là, Ombre décide de devenir l’allié de Bojji quoi qu’il arrive! Et j’adore le duo qu’ils forment tous les deux, une belle amitié est né entre ces deux là. L’histoire est vraiment très plaisante à lire, tout comme l’anime forcément, ce n’est pas l’histoire avec le plus d’actions etc et pourtant c’est une histoire fantastique! Malgré son côté très enfantin, cette histoire est pleine de profondeur et force l’admiration.

Après avoir vu l’anime, c’est un vrai plaisir de découvrir l’histoire sur papier. Ça m’a fait très plaisir de redécouvrir le début de l’histoire de Bojji. On découvre également le passé de Ombre et ça m’a brisé le coeur également son histoire. Cet univers, ces personnages, la profondeur de l’histoire, tout est un véritable coup de coeur pour moi. Je suis déjà plus qu’impatient de découvrir les autres tomes. Et même si je connais l’histoire, je suis tout de même très impatiente de découvrir la suite des aventures de Bojji et Ombre. J’aime ce côté enfantin, c’est un vrai plaisir à lire. Et comme je le dis juste au dessus, derrière son côté enfantin se cache une histoire avec une énorme profondeur!

So oder so ähnlich ging es wahrscheinlich einigen mit dem Titel. Ja, man soll nach dem Äußeren nicht urteilen, aber es ist nun Mal das Cover bzw. der Zeichenstil, der vor allem bei Mangas die Aufmerksamkeit auf bestimmte Titel zieht. Der Stil dieses Titels ist relativ einfach gehalten, wenn man aber erstmal in der Story drin ist irgendwie auch ganz cool. Und genau das ist der Knackpunkt bei diesem Manga. Der Inhalt ist wirklich sehr genial.
Die Geschichte transportiert spielend leicht Emotion, Charakter und Herz. Es geht um Bojji, einen Prinzen, der ziemlich klein und schmächtig geraten ist. Noch dazu ist er leider taubstumm und durch sein naives Verhalten oft Opfer des Gespötts der Bürger und der Dienerschaft. Doch irgendwie ist in der Geschichte nicht alles gleich so wie es scheint. So erfahren wir im Laufe des Auftaktes einiges über die einzelnen Charaktere, wobei uns deren Beweggründe meist noch etwas schleierhaft bleiben. Das, was mir dabei besonders gefallen hat, ist das Fehlen sämtlichen Info Drops. Die Geschichte entwickelt sich ohne dabei klar vorgezeichnet zu werden, sondern eher durch Einblicke, die zu Vermutungen und Spekulationen führen. Natürlich gibt es Backgroundinfos hier und dort, aber der Hauptaugenmerk liegt eben darauf, die Entwicklungen zu zeigen, statt sie zu erklären. Überall wird etwas an Information weggelassen, was es unfassbar spannend macht die Geschehnisse zu verfolgen. Das Storytelling des Mangas ist wirklich meisterhaft!
Dem einfachen Grundkonflikt der Geschichte, nämlich dem zwischen dem schwachen Thronfolger und dem starken Zweitgeborenen, werden ganz viele wirklich coole Twists hinzugefügt. Dann gibt es noch das Schattenwesen Kage, dass erstmal nicht so mein Fall war, aber genau so gut entwickelt und durchdacht ist, dass man es als Teil der Geschichte ins Herz schließt.
Nachdem ich den ersten Band gelesen habe muss ich sagen passt der einfache Stil irgendwie auch, weil dadurch inhaltliche Mittel viel stärker transportiert werden. Auf jeden Fall ist der Titel wirklich besonders und es lohnt sich tatsächlich mal reinzulesen. Und ganz ehrlich ich bin nicht nur super neugierig wie es weitergeht sondern auch schon ganz schön emotional involviert. Daher kann ich sagen: do it! Der Manga ist wirklich einen genauen Blick wert!

Qui connaît l'extraordinaire (comme dans "hors de l'ordinaire") Ranking of Kings? En fait, ce style si particulier de dessin m'a longtemps fait hésiter. Peu de décors, des visages dessinés avec quelques traits, aucune nuance de gris... On se concentre sur l'expression des personnages. Ce qui est finalement parfait pour ce type d'histoire, proche du conte.

Mais Ranking of Kings est un conte dans la pure lignée traditionnelle, de celle de la violence de Barbe Bleue, de la cruauté de Cendrillon, des sacrifices sanglants du Lac des Cygnes. Ce n'est pas les versions Disney, on est tout près des morales de Grimm et de Perreault, avec le courage du Chat Botté, la persévérance de Hansel et Gretel.

Si vous avez à peu près mon âge et que vous vous souvenez du Prince orphelin, de Rémi sans famille ou de Démétan, il y a de cela dans Ranking of Kings. Le héros n'est pas épargné par les épreuves de la vie.

Toutefois, c'est un récit avec plus de nuances que son dessin. Les méchants et les bons ne sont pas noir et blanc. On développe vraiment bien chacun des personnages et ceux que l'on croit si mauvais sont finalement à plaindre eux aussi. Et ceux qu'on pensait être de grands rois ont fait preuve de beaucoup de méchanceté envers d'autres...

Je n'ai pas lu encore tous les tomes (ce que je compte faire). Mais avec les enfants, on s'est lancé dans le dessin animé, remarquablement bien fait, avec ses couleurs pastels, son ambiance de conte de fées, sa riche musique. C'est un récit qui peut convenir aux jeunes à partir de 8 ans, je crois. Même s'il est vrai que, quand le petit Bojji se fait massacrer, trahir ou qu'il pleure à chaudes larmes, ma plus jeune venait se coller, pour être réconfortée. Jusqu'à ce qu'un personnage inattendu entre dans la chambre et soulage les graves blessures de l'enfant courageux, montrant que la bonté est là aussi, dans cette histoire.

Prinz Bojji kann weder hören noch sprechen und wird in einer Welt, in der alleine Stärke zählt, als schwach und einfältig angesehenen. Keiner nimmt ihn für voll, nur sein Vater, der König, der ihn zu seinem Nachfolger ernennt. Doch der zweitgeborenen Prinz Daida sieht das gar nicht ein, ist er doch viel stärker als Bojji. So muss der kleine Prinz einiges erleiden. Doch Bojji steckt voller Überraschungen.

Genauso wie dieser Reihenauftakt. Ganz ehrlich, der Zeichenstil spricht mich so gar nicht an, doch nach ein paar Seiten habe ich mich daran gewöhnt und mittlerweile hat er seinen eigenen Charme. Obwohl die Zeichnungen eher einfach wirken, ist es der Manga und die Geschichte definitiv nicht. Die Charaktere wissen zu überraschen und sind nicht nur schwarz oder weiß und das Schicksal von Bojji ist manchmal schwer zu ertragen.

Was hier hervorsticht, ist die wundervolle Geschichte. Die von Einsamkeit, Verlust und Freundschaft erzählt. Aber auch von Vertrauen, Verrat und ganz viel Mut. Denn auch wenn niemand an Bojji glaubt, so hat er selbst die Hoffnung nicht aufgegeben und ist ein Kämpfer. Sein kleiner Freund, ein Schattenwesen muss ich auch noch erwähnen, die beiden sind eine interessantes Gespann.

Der Manga hat überraschen viel tiefe, die Charaktere sind vielschichtig und der kleine Bojji ist wirklich zuckersüß und sein Schattenfreund Kage, hätte ich auch gerne als Begleiter.
Bin sehr gespannt, wie die Geschichte weiter geht.

L’histoire de Ranking of Kings se déroule dans un monde où les rois de différents royaumes sont classés en fonction de plusieurs critères : leur force, leur popularité, la satisfaction de leurs sujets, la prospérité des villes, etc. Bojji est un petit prince sourd, muet et dénué de toute force physique. Héritier du trône, il espère malgré son handicap se montrer digne de son père, le roi Bosse, et devenir le souverain “le plus génial du monde”. Mais le peuple et l’entourage de Bojji ne voit en lui que ses faiblesses. Un complot s'organise pour placer son frère cadet, Daida, à la tête du pays. Accompagné de son seul ami, Ombre, notre héros va alors partir à l’aventure pour trouver un moyen de développer ses qualités et de réaliser son rêve.

Sous ses apparences enfantines, Ranking of Kings cache une écriture d’une grande profondeur. L'œuvre utilise les ficelles classiques du conte et du manga shônen mais les prend à contrepied. À contrario de nombreux héros, le petit prince ne va pas essayer de briser la malédiction qui le rend pitoyable au yeux des autres mais il va apprendre à transformer sa faiblesse en qualité. Chaque personnage de l’histoire se voit offrir une occasion de nous surprendre et de gagner en profondeur en dépassant nos attentes. Ces moments rendent le récit bouleversant de justesse et de sincérité. Et il n’existe pas de personnage plus attendrissant et désarmant que le petit prince Bojji qui fait preuve d’une humanité et d’une résilience à toute épreuve.

王様ランキング, Ranking of Kings, while generic in some senses to standard shounen fare, differs in some beautiful ways as well. To get out of the way the most obvious bit, the art style is refreshingly unconventional and escapes many of the ridiculous tropes that blight most popular Japanese illustration. While the story is in a sense a rehashing of "young boy aspires to become the best *insert here*" the protagonist Bojji's great emotional sensitivity, youth (not a plucky 15-year-old but an almost baby-ish child), physical disabilities, and lack of physical might all ask a little more of the reader than for them to simply root for their hero to get stronger and kick more ass. Bojji's strength basically maxes out around volume 4, and the story finds conflict and resolution outside the context of something he can solve through fighting. Some arcs are stronger than others, with the first major one being the best I feel, and at times things feel rushed or underdeveloped, but by and large this manga sits above much else that populates today's circulation.

So happy that Bojji and Kage found each other ^_^ Just like in the anime, it was pretty hard to see how Bojji was bullied and abused, same with Kage's past.

Nevertheless, I adore stories of heroes/heroines with some kind of disability, and how they make people around them to change and love them <3

The anime is almost frame to frame like the manga except the art in the anime is better, while the manga shows a bit more, like Bebin being not a villain and the father making a pact with the demon.

J'ai adoré.

Je trouve que le style de dessin du mangaka est indissociable de l'histoire qu'il raconte, et ça m'a fait apprécié d'avantage ma lecture.

Bojji est beaucoup trop attachant et la relation qu'il développe avec ombre est inattendue.

L'univers peut sembler "enfantin" et "simple" de prime abord, mais j'ai l'impression que ce n'est qu'une façade.
Je ne serais pas surprise que l'histoire devienne de plus en plus profonde, notamment avec les intrigues de cours et les mystères qui entour le clan des ombres.

J'attendais la sortie de ce manga avec grande impatience, après avoir vu les éloges que l'anime avait reçus. Je ne suis pas du tout déçue par ce premier tome, j'aime beaucoup l'univers, la narration à la manière d'un conte, et la progression du scénario est très agréable et intelligente. Ça promet pour les prochains tomes. 😊 Les dessins ne sont pas ce que je préfère mais ça change de ce qu'on a l'habitude de voir. J'adore la bouille de Bojji. 👶🏻

Un manga veramente bello, diverso dagli altri. Bojji il protagonista è un bambino muto e sordo che però non si lascia mai abbattere dalla sua condizione. Nonostante tutto intorno venga continuamente disprezzato. A mio parere bisognerebbe introdurlo nelle scuola così che ogni bambino possa capire cosa si cela dietro la diversità, Bojji è decisamente il re del mio cuore. Consiglio davvero questo manga, non sottovalutatelo perché lui vi porterà in mondi che non pensavate esistessero.

Per me un capolavoro. Ho preso primo volume di questo fantasy al Comicon, incuriosita da una recensione letta. Ho iniziato lettura pensando avrei letto un fantasy light ed invece ho trovato una "bomba" di contenuti. Empatia, discriminazione, stereotipi, diversità, coraggio, fiducia, tradimenti, falsità...troviamo veramente tematiche piuttosto pesanti e trattate in modo geniale.

Je ne peux passer outre les dessins mais sinon l’histoire est top! Une histoire de Fantasy solide avec un personnage sourd et muet et frêle qui doit faire sa place dans un royaume où les complots et les jeux de pouvoir vont bon train! Hâte de poursuivre!

Una historia muy tierna y con un personaje bastante adorable. Cuando vi como el pequeño Bojji se desenvuelve con los demás, no pude evitar sentir tanta ternura.

Por otro lado, la historia también me pareció bastante entretenida. Un toque de fantasía con drama político y mucha acción.

Vraiment drôle, je ne m'attendais pas à ça ! Aussi émouvant, ce petit prince faible et muet plein de bonté. L'ombre est aussi très attachante. Le dessin peut rébuter au début mais je m'y suis fait assez rapidement, grâce aux touches d'humour je pense

I just can’t with Bajji, he only deserves love

Visuellement, ce livre n’avait rien pour me séduire mais après en avoir trouvé une copie en usagé, je me suis dit « pourquoi pas ». Et j’ai bien fait ! Je lis généralement en silence, mais cette fois-ci, j’étais si pris dans le récit que je ne pouvais m’empêcher de m’exprimer. À lire !

C'était un cadeau d'anniversaire pour une enfant de 10ans, je voulais me faire un avis avant de l'offrir. Bonne surprise, touchée par le personnage principal et j'ai bien envie de découvrir la suite de son histoire. Des sujets difficiles évoqués, mais ça reste acceptable pour un enfant.

Je n’ai pas réussi à accrocher. Ni au dessin ni à l’histoire. Cependant le petit prince est très mignon :)
