I would have given this 2 stars only I can't stop reading this series so I guess it warrants another star for being compelling.
Otherwise, it's the kind of book that makes me crazy with not being able to suspend my disbelief. You'll notice I tagged it fantasy even though it definitely wants to be sci-fi. Also it's a young adult novel, which isn't its fault, I just tend to be irritated by young adult protagonists.
So first, the main character is a girl (Audie) who is terrible at math but great at physics. So already, I don't believe her. I'm sure you can understand physics to a point without math, learn the theories and whatnot in plain language (that's what I do), but I seriously can't imagine being able to actually BE GOOD at physics, especially in a university setting (which is where Audie wants to go), without understanding the math behind it. Someone, please, prove me wrong, it just doesn't seem possible to me given that physics IS MATH.
The next thing is that Audie somehow figures out (using her unparalleled physics skills, I assume) that "changing your vibrations" can catapult you into an alternate universe. The way she changes her vibrations is by meditating. And she has to be meditating at the same time as her counterpart in an alternate universe is meditating. Which doesn't seem all that hard, so my question is, how come this hasn't been documented before in all of human history? Audie literally disappears when she goes to the other universe, in a human history full of spirituality, I can't imagine that there weren't a lot of people disappearing and coming back with stories of alternate universes. And you don't even have to be good at meditating, Audie had only been doing it for 6 months before it worked for her!
She finds this professor that all the other physics professors laugh at because he does fringe research on vibrations and shit, and in his lab is a grad student who hooks polygraph machines up to plants to measure their stress levels (as if plants show stress in the same way that people do). So really, I'm thinking, yeah, this guy should probably be laughed out of the physics conferences, except that his research turns out to be right, and they explain the fact that he's not respected by claiming that cognitive dissonance and fear is causing the other physicists to not believe the proof that he's showing to them.
Audie meets her alternate self, Halli, who is exactly like her genetically only she was raised to be an adventurer and is therefore buffer and better at problem-solving. I'm assuming this means that their universes split at least just after they were both born, but that's wrong, because their parents are totally different too. So their parents, despite their crazy-different personalities, still managed to get together and have kids at exactly the same time with the exact same gene configuration. I know, I know, infinite universes contain infinite possibilities, it just seems KIND OF CONVENIENT.
And then Audie is also mooning over this love of her life, her best friend's brother, who is dating a caricature of an annoying person. He's the best most selfless and wonderful guy in the entire world and Audie has never told him that she into him, she just licks spoons that he's used when he's not looking. This is where I start to zone out because I hate reading about mooney love-struck teens.
Audie has adventures with Hallie in the alternate world and then shit goes down, right into a serious cliffhanger. At which point I need to decide: do I walk away from this series, or double-down and read three more books? Despite all of the above, the cliffhanger was really serious and amazon's one-click purchase thing with the kindle app is really dangerous so now I'm reading the omnibus.

Interesting. But, Robin, that kind of cliffhanger is really unforgivable - combined with the publication date of the sequel scheduled for August 2012*, which is year from now if one doesn't have Audie's universe manipulating mind skills.
*edit: The human mind IS a powerful thing. because sequels that are announced on the last page of the first book are usually published a year later, my subconsciousness substituted the number 2011 that is plainly there for everybody to see with 2012. I still resent the huge cliffy, because I cannot stand buying just half a story without being informed of that circumstance beforehand, but the shorter waiting span between the two(?) parts does console me. Rating clarification: 3 stars going on 4.

Robin Brande takes readers into a new dimension—literally—with her YA sci-fi, INTO THE PARALLEL. While various elements of the story, such as plot and characters, don’t feel as tight as her YA contemporary novels, INTO THE PARALLEL is nevertheless an enjoyable story that draws only lightly on advanced scientific concepts.
The majority of INTO THE PARALLEL unfolds through dialogue: Audie talking to Hallie and trying to figure out what’s going on, Audie talking to the professor, Audie lying to her mom…really, the amount of information that’s revealed through stationary dialogue is rather disconcerting, as you realize that there’s not much going on in terms of plot. Due to the talky nature of the story, little seems to be at stake: about halfway through the story, I found myself wondering, okay, so are we ever going to get to the gritty conflict? Alas, I felt like no such thing ever appeared—INTO THE PARALLEL was really just an exploration of a new situation, with little else driving the story.
The characters all seem to suffer from various symptoms of character flatness. Audie is a pretty straightforward protagonist, but sometimes she bugged me because her thoughts and behavior were at odds with her supposed intelligence. Honestly? This is one girl who will not be getting into Columbia, her dream school—and if she does, I will be tempted to chalk it up to fictional wish fulfillment (sigh). Hallie’s unwillingness to draw attention to herself and her accomplishments is at least consistent and admirable, if a little boring. As for Audie’s love interests, well, not much distinguishes them either. I feel like the character development relied too much on dialogue, at the expense of actually allowing readers’ connections to the characters, and the characters’ connections to one another, to unfold more naturally.
INTO THE PARALLEL tackles the fascinating possibilities that quantum mechanics and string theory offer, but it does so in a way that is rather elementary: in fact, the story could’ve done without the astrophysics element and still worked. Therefore, I’d say that it is a less sci-fi and more just a series of events that unfolds in parallel universes. Nevertheless, I give Robin Brande credit for all her research into this fascinating topic, and for writing a KILLER of a cliffhanger ending that, fortunately, can be immediately remedied, as the sequel is now out online. Will I be reading it? Hmm. Perhaps. INTO THE PARALLEL was lacking in a number of elements that are important to me in an enjoyable and well-written story, but everyone has those few authors they make exceptions for, and Robin’s one of them for me.

This book is just really dumb. The 17-year-old protagonist is supposedly terrible at maths (like, grade 6 maths) but somehow really good at physics, and she wants to get into a particular university to study physics with Professor not-Stephen-Hawking, but unfortunately he considers maths to be important for some reason. So her plan to get around this is to prove the existence of parallel universes by meditating so hard she transports herself into one. This works, naturally.
But as well as the plot being really dumb, so is the character. When she gets to the alternate universe, she meets the alternate version of herself (and I'm not even going to get started on how ridiculous it is that the people in the other universe match up with our universe one-to-one despite living totally different lives) and discovers that the other Earth has more advanced technology than hers, but is seemingly incapable of processing this information. Here's an example:
I can't tell if the author is incredibly slow or just thinks all her readers are.

July 23, 2011I don't even know where to begin reviewing Robin Brande's latest book, so let me start with this: it was, like everything she has written, excellent. "Into the Parallel" had the same spot-on characterization, emotion, and dialogue that I have come to expect from Brande, but it also added aspects of reality that read like fantasy to mix. "Into the Parallel" will undoubtedly satisfy both fantasy fans and the contemporary realistic fiction crowd with it's mix of quantum physics that seems too crazy to be true and a smart, adventurous narrator who couldn't be more true-to-life. Brande effectively brings some of the most complex theories of quantum physics down to a level that the average reader can understand and, as she's done in "Evolution, Me, and Other Freaks of Nature" and "Fat Cat," shown that science is way more cool than the average high school chemistry teacher may lead you to believe. With a cliff-hanger ending that has me counting down the days until the end of August when book two is released, "Into the Parallel" has me shouting off the rooftops that everyone should read this novel.

Meh..I've actually quite enjoyed the book, that is until Audie meets up with the Professor and parallel universes all of a sudden
Audie really confused me at times. So you want to attend an Ivy league university for a degree in physics, but you suck at math? Well, good luck not failing your 101 classes, even the guys in "The Big Bang theory" do quite a lot of math ;)
The thing that happens the one time she gets really jealous of Halli,
And the ending, weeeelll..I dont get it! (many question marks ahead)
It was way too far on the magical side of fantasy for my taste in SF, and i do love magic.

I realize that this might sound slightly hyperbolic but Robin Brande is one of the best writers I have ever read. I am talking Top 10. There is just something about her writing that makes me happy. I first discovered her when she was a debut novelist with her book Evolution, Me and Other Freaks of Nature and I have been a stalwart fan ever since. Evolution was followed by Fat Cat, then DogGirl and then a series of short stories. Each one better than the last.
One of my favorite things about Robin is her ability to take complex subjects and make them accessible to all of her readers, regardless of age. Her latest title, Into the Parallel, has done that in more ways than I ever thought possible. She has somehow managed to break down Quantum Physics and make it easily understandable by anyone who reads it. Into the Parallel follows Audie Masters, a girl who manages to catapult herself into an alternate reality. There she meets herself, albeit a different version, and the two become as inseparable as two girls from alternate universes can be. As Audie explores her new found ability, she learns much about herself and her alternate self and soon discovers that the smallest changes can literally make a world of difference. It is by far Robin’s best work, thereby earning it’s way into my heart and onto my list of All Time Favorite Books Ever.
Also, there is a super hot guy. Which basically means that Robin has written a Quantum Physics love story. I can’t even begin to describe just how amazing that is.

Who knew reading about quantum physics could be so fun? I really liked the main character and enjoyed the writing style of the author. I also enjoyed finding out what the people in the alternate universe were like as compared to their characters in the "real world" of the book. I will definitely be downloading the second one in this series and I currently have another of Brande's books, Fat Cat, waiting for me at the library. I think I found a new author to read!

Terrific book! I totally enjoyed this fun, imaginative, suspenseful tale of a 17-year-old girl, an aspiring physicist, who finds her way to a parallel universe, where she meets her counterpart in that universe. It's a pleasure to read a book that's so well-written, with such interesting characters and excellent dialogue. It's a very entertaining, fascinating science fiction novel that also includes romance, dogs, and lots of twists and turns. It ends in quite a cliffhanger, so be ready to continue on to Book 2 as soon as you finish it!

Lets start off by saying I HATE PHYSICS. My Father was a Ph.d in quantum physics and would go on and on and on about it, even as a asmall child my Father could not even help me with my math homework as it wold turn into a 5 hr lecture of how numbers came to be in the Arab world, etc. and my teacher forbade me from asking him after many times of not having homework to turn in... Funny now but not at the time... Anyway I almost did not get this book and within an hr into reading this I was on the hunt for the rest of the series!!!!! I had all audio books, and let me tell you I am still upset that the omnibus last two books together are not in audio format, yet. I did however reach out to the author since I could not find it on audio format and she told me that there is a need for it and she will ask her publishers to get it on that format! Yeah!!!! Until then I am on the CLIFF!!!!! I have read all that I can and love love love the series! I am not the targeted audience, young adults, I am a 45 year old and the series kept my attention, gripped me, the story line is amazing and kept me wanting more!!!!!!! Get the last tow books that are together in the omnibus in audio format so that I can get it!!!!!!!!! I never write books about books, but this time I HAD to let you all know this series is just amazing!!!!!! If you read my reviews you know that I am not hear to read a dust jacket to you, give away the plot, analyze the characters or give you MY opinion about each and everything I liked, or did not like, about the book. I let the book jacket or Goodreads description stand on its own. i am here to tell you if this book, in my humble opinion, is worth your valuable time and hard earned money. This book is a SPEND YOUR MONEY book!!!!!

This was such a perfect read at a perfect time for me. Robin Brande writes in such an awesome straightforward manner. I love how it felt like Audie, the main character, was speaking right to the reader. The best thing about this book is that there's actually science behind the science fiction. Most books to do with parallel worlds or time travel tend to gloss over the specifics, but Brande brings scientific theories right to the foreground. No worries, though, if you're not a science geek. You'll still be able to understand and appreciate all the science-y information being brought forth. Mostly it was just refreshing to see a science fiction title actually rooted in science.
'Into the Parallel' introduces a sort of Fringe-like parallel world to the one Audie is living in. There are people who look alike, but who have different names and different personalities. I loved all the differences between the 2 universes, as well as the differences between the look-alike characters themselves. I don't want to say much more because reading the book is an incredible journey on its own. I have yet to be disappointed by Robin Brande. I can always count on her books to contain great characters and interesting, issue-driven plots. 'Into the Parallel' was refreshing and absolutely satisfying, leaving me desperately wanting Book 2.

Awaiting my First Reads copy, I can't wait to dive into a new series!
What a great concept for a series, I loved it. Being the geek that I am, I even loved the science behind the universe hopping. The characters are well developed and the idea that your 'mirror' self in another universe might be very different from you was a great way to play out this concept.
Audie is a terrific narrator, and the way Robin Brande writes her inner dialogue is funny and endearing. I found myself chuckling and nodding my head at some of the thoughts she has, berating herself for some of the immature things she knows she's doing. Who hasn't had similar inner dialogues with themselves over silly stuff you know you probably shouldn't have been doing?
The second half of the book really picked up the pace and left me wanting more with the cliffhanger ending. (Really, I've never read a book with an ending that close to an ACTUAL cliffhanger! lol) I'm already looking for the next book in the series, but it's not out yet! So close!

A fun Young Adult novel about finding a parallel universe full of familiar faces with different personalities. The protagonist is hoping to apply to a prestigious Ivy League university to study physics, especially quantum theory. When a chance discussion about yoga, meditating and "vibrations" chimes with quantum string theory and vibrations, we're off on our journey of exploration.
I would have enjoyed the book more if there was more plot and less worrying about copping off - more literature and less YA. I appreciate some is needed for establishing character, but I'm sure the protagonist would have survived a bit of editing. After reading the author's back-page biography it feels as if they have tried to cram as much of their idealised self into the protagonist's parallel counterpart, and then have the protagonist longing to be the other.
The climatic ending is a little too well sign posted, and of course leaves the reading hanging for part 2 (of 4).

I debated between giving this 2 stars or not.
There was some good stuff here. However sadly I think the bad kinda outweighed it:
1) The book just stops out of nowhere. No resolution or nada. Felt more like I was reading the first part of a book.
2) There's something the character does, which look, I get part of it, the guy she has a crush offers her a drink and she admits it's lame and pathetic and weird but she doesn't wipe off the straw deliberately so it's like they're kissing. THAT I could have lived with, I think I've ever done that with the girls I've been interested in, but then she goes on describe how she often LICKS THE RIMS OF GLASSES that he had been drinking. That was kinda gross and annoyingly stuck with me whenever the character in question showed up, or her other love interest.
Not entirely sure I'll read the sequel. Maybe just to see the cliffhanger resolution. Not sure.

Not entirely sure I'll read the sequel. Maybe just to see the cliffhanger resolution. Not sure.

Have you ever wondered if there are "copies" of you in alternate realities? This novel answers that very question. The main character is somewhat of a prodigy, she is forever inquisitive and has a tendency for getting herself into tight situations. When she finds her parallel self living in another reality, she has to explore the other's life. However, things are literally not always what they seem. The main character is in more trouble than she realizes, the reader follows this exciting story through the ups and downs. The main character is amusing and entertains the reader. The plot itself is very different and is sure to please any budding science buff. This novel is recommended for young adults/teens who enjoy science fiction.

This is a fun read. Audie is a real person. The whole trying to get in to the college she thinks is the best is real life. I could go on and on about her life, you laugh or cry at the way she thinks through things. Then when she meets Halli and everything changes. Audie's ordinary life is no more. How many dream that our ordinary lives would change? Again her reaction to her new life is so real. What would you do? If you are looking for a new type of story read this book and then the whole series.

I absolutely Loved reading this book. I couldn't put it down! But I think(and i don't think im the only one) that the star that is missing is because of the cliffhanger but it doesn't mean that the cliffhanger was bad not at all. I was so excited for the next book! I love Daniels character. Hes so nice and sweet :3 the only thing i didn't like about it was (for me) it was a little hard to follow the part where Audie sort of saves Halli but gets put into her body. Other than that, i loved the book and enjoyed reading it and I can't wait for the next book!

January 27, 2017This book is simply about the main characters Audie and Hallie meeting each other in parallel a parallel Universe and the odd thing is that they look almost exactly alike. They are so fasanated and intrigued that they explore each others worlds and lives in their parallel Universes while lying to the people they know.
I loved the book. It was so breath taking adventurous and cool in my opinion, and I’m looking forward to reading the next book soon; I’m really eager to start reading the second book(I,cI,I;I).

Imagine if you met yourself, but it wasn't in the mirror!
If you like science or even wonder about the possiblility of other universes, this smart, funny and really interesting book is for you. I've been looking forward to this book for a while and it was definitely worth the wait. Not only is it a fun and clever read, but it makes you think about your place in the universe and what makes you uniquely YOU. Plus, there is a nice dog and hot guys in it, so what more could you ask for?

I really enjoyed this book. I don't think I've ever read a book about a parallel universe, so this was new for me. It was really interesting and I wanted to keep reading to find out what would happen. It was a good book and easy to get into.
I feel smarter after reading this book. I learned a lot about physicist theories and things like that. That almost for me when I read.

I enjoyed Robin Brande's version of parallel worlds and how one girl is able to travel from her dimension into another. I thought it was very original that she mixed mediation and even astral projection with science to create the portal for Audie to travel through. I'm looking forward to starting her second book in the series.

I am wondering a few things about certain aspects to the physics being used in this book but I'm hoping that they may be answered in the next book. I found this read enjoyable and not hard to follow, as I was told by a fellow reader that they were lost. I am interested to see where this 2nd book takes us now that Audie has taken over Halli's body.

I thought this book was pretty amazing. I was thrilled when I found out I won the whole signed series. This book was great. I loved how Audie defies so many laws of physics. She is a true rebel. Halli is a great strong character.

The science stuff was over my head but the ending was sure gripping! Luckily I have the 2nd book available :)

Into the Parallel is a great read. I beleive in this type of thing so it really drew me in I could not put the book down a must read ! Loved it!
