An off-season adventure, driving his expensive, new car from LA to New York got Jake Lawrence’s motor running. Free from his snooty Park Avenue girlfriend, the third baseman hit the highway, ready for anything. Or so he thought.
Kate MacKenzie, aspiring musical theater star, sneaked out of her motel room after her mother had gambled away all the young woman’s money. In the middle of nowhere, with less than four dollars to her name, the plucky actress planned to waitress her way to New York for a Broadway audition. All she needed was a job that paid enough for bus fare.
Saving the beauty from a beating by the motel manager, Jake offers Kate a ride all the way to Manhattan. Leery of offers from men, Kate had no choice but to accept. She vowed to preserve her dignity and keep the sexy slugger at arm’s length.
Mutual attraction couldn’t derail the pair from their goals. Kate’s dream of making it on Broadway collided with Jake’s of making it to the World Series.
Will their road trip lead to love? Or to a lonely existence of separation and insecurity?
I've been making up stories for as long as I can remember. When other kids wanted to be doctors, teachers or firemen, I wanted to be a writer. As soon as I could read, I began devouring books. I'd read anything I could get my hands on, but Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women" and Nancy Drew mysteries were early favorites. In school, term papers were my favorite homework. While others bemoaned the amount of work involved, I jumped in, burying myself in research and writing the document with care. Still fiction was my first love. After college and a degree in English, I fell into the world of advertising. After many years in corporate America, I went my own way. Working and raising two kids took all my energy and creativity. But when the youngest went off to school, all the stories ideas in my head came to life. Mac Caldwell and Callie Richards landed in my head and refused to leave. So I told their story. What started as one book has become six. Now I greet my characters every morning at six and jump back into their story, enjoying every minute. I'm blessed to be able to work at something I love. More than 70 books later, I'm still up at the crack of dawn, crafting the tales of the people who live in my head while nursing a cup of tea and a few pieces of black licorice.
desitheblonde First last night the author offered me the book on audio and i listen to it in about a day

I was so happy to finally get Jake's book. I've loved him since forever it seems, and I am happy to finally get his HEA.
This is book 3 of the Bottom of the Ninth Series and can be read as a stand alone. HOWEVER......this is a great series, and I recommend starting on book 1. The whole series is fantastic and is a Must Read! If you love Hot, Sexy, Sports Players, and Sassy, Take Charge, Female Leads, then this is the series for you.
Jake is on a road trip before the next ball season starts and runs across Kate who is a down on her luck actress on her way to New York. Jake can not help rescuing a damsel in distress and boy does he have his hands full with Kate. Sparks fly instantly with these two and they do anything to keep the other from knowing about their mutual attraction.
This is a titillating story that gets your blood pumping, your pulse racing, and maybe even your *******, well, I'll let you use your imagination for finish that thought :) All in all, it is a fantastic read.
Written as a multi pov. Awesome characters that are easy to fall in love with. Great story line that sucks you in. Nice story flow. Strong descriptions to details. Not overly done or wordy. I love how it brings in the characters from the previous books, but they do not overtake the story. They sexy, naughty bits are hot as well!
A pro baseball player on a contending team, Jake Lawrence has it all. Looks, a body to die for, fame, money, a hot car and any woman he wants. So, of course, his life is lacking that certain special spark... Kate's got nothin'. She's a week and a thousand miles away from her dream - a starring role on Broadway - when her mom the gambling addict get ahold of Kate's nest egg and leaves Kate flat broke, with a dead car, and an irate hotel manager chasing her down the road. That's when Jake and his sweet car, fat wallet, and good looks enter the picture. Jake's a good guy. Really. He rescues Kate, covers the bills, buys her lunch, and offers to take her new York, where he lives. Kate's as suspicious as a mouse confronted with an unexpected block of cheese. Hey, she'a had a rough life, and knows there's no such thing as a free lunch... But she's wrong. As they drive to NYC, Jake and Kate get closer, friendlier, and ... You know where this is going. But author Jean Joachim has a knack for infusing dead tropes with new life, and this lovely tale of rescue, romance and HEA has a few bumps on the road, a couple of snakes in the grass, and an unexpected curveball or two - not to mention sex and angst in spades - and that's what makes the whole trip worthwhile. Good storytelling, flawless editing - there's everything to like about Jake Lawrence, Third Base, and the promise of more romantic tales in The Bottom Of the Ninth series. Score! Great story. Jake is such a gentleman and is trying to help Kate get to New York after he sees her getting hit by a hotel clerk. She is broke and needs to get to New York for her audition for Broadway. Her mother was supposed to deposit her check in her account but instead she gambled it away leaving Kate penniless. Jake offers to take her with him since he is going there anyway, and doesn't expect anything from her. He is attracted to her but refrains from making a move on her. As they spend the next ten days together traveling across the country they get to know each other and they both develop feelings for each other but neither expresses them. They stay in motel rooms together but separate bed until one night they are booked into a room that has only one king bed so they share the bed. Things really heat up from there. When they get to New York her partner for the audition is sick and can't go so Jake goes in his place as they were practicing the singing while they were driving. Does Kate get the part? What happens when Jake is offered a part in the Broadway show? What happens when Kate has to travel for up to six months? Will they make it work or will they split up? What does Jake tell his ex when she comes back demanding that they are still together and Kate was just a fling while she was traveling in Europe for four months?
Jake Lawerence, Third Base was another home run for Jean Joachim. Like all the others I devoured this book in a day. The characters in this book was well developed and mature. It took me awhile to warm up to Jake but once I did he definitely stole my heart.
Kate MacKenzie was down on her luck with no money and a Mom addicted to gambling. Her dream of making Broadway was all she had left. She had a audition coming up and here she was stuck in the middle of nowhere. When she thought things couldn't get worse, luck came racing in a Lexus GS F.
Jake Lawerence was third basemen of the Nighthawks. It was off season and he was living his dream of traveling cross country. Jake thought he was happy with his life until one stop for food quickly changed his while perspective on life.
I truly felt Kate and Jake couldn't have been more perfect matches for each other. This book wasn't all smooth sails, and had its fair share of hurdles. When everything seems to be working against them can Kate and Jake find there happy medium between love and demanding careers?
Another story for Baseball Fans in the Bottom of the Ninth series, which is filled with play-by-play baseball details and strategy from the Players perspective underlying the steamy romance between Jake and Kate.
I think my favourite part of the book was their road trip as they got to know each other, prior to all the drama they each eventually went through to be together. Jake and Kate both have melodramatic moments that reflected their emotional immaturity. The story was very angsty at times as they both laboured with either self blame, or blaming the other person for bad things happening in their lives. However through time and experience, they work through their own individual stuff with lots of self talk, and rediscovering why they fell in love with each other. Eventually both characters emotionally grew from the experience of balancing work with a committed relationship.
In the end it all worked out, but I would love to have had an epilogue about how their lives and career schedules worked out in the future. Final Rating: 3 Stars
I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
Dang this series gets better and better. I fall in love with each of the players. I really don't know how Ms. Joachim keeps her stories so fresh and different from each other. The guys are hot and humble and their women are role models. I love the dual POVs that each book is written in. It helps me to understand the characters and their actions. I really feel that these characters are friends and I hate to say good-bye to them at the end of their stories. I look forward to future installments. I did start the series out of order (I have already read Nat's story) but as Nat's follows this one, I definitely will be re-reading it again. That is the great thing about Ms. Joachim's books, you will want to re-read them over and over again!!!! A definite home-run winner with this book!
I totally get why Jake would want to take his brand new car across country. The USA is gorgeous and the road is definitely the way to see it. He the adventurous kind of guy. He is also a complete gentleman. Not many men these day would stop and help a woman in distress.
Kate is so strong. She doesn't let her youth stop her from reaching for her dreams.
The one part of the book that I love was when half the team went to the theater. They went in support and to get ammunition against Jake. This team is truly a family.
This is a drama filled, sweet romance. Jake is sweet, romantic, confident and exciting. Kate is independent, proud, stubborn and insecure. Kate really puts Jake through the ringer, mostly because she's never had anyone that she could trust or depend on. He's totally into the relationship, but he has to keep convincing her of that. There are some interesting surprises and entertaining moments, with all of the characters.
I loved this book. The characters are real, lusty, funny, flawed, and amazing written. The romance is honest and believable, the pacing crisp, and the dialog snappy. The sports action is well done, factual and packed with action. Also, the bedroom scenes are spicy, sensual, and sizzle nicely. A great addition to a wonderful sports romance series.
The third book in the Bottom of the Ninth series is a well-written book that once I started reading I was not putting it down. Kate MacKenzie an aspiring musical theater star and third baseman Jake Lawrence’s story drew me in from the first page. I want to look at reading more of this series. I received a copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
Jake is a awesome character that draws you in. Kaye a women who has had her struggles but may have found her hero. You are going to love the story but hold on the emotions are going to lull you into every page. Its really a great read
I really enjoyed this story about Jake, a hot baseball player. The characters are engaging, well developed and have a lot of chemistry. This is a another wonderful story by Jean Joachim.
Another home run in this awesome new series by the talented Ms. Joachim. Jake and Kate are truly a match in almost all ways. Their chance meeting sets the tone for this book filled with adventure, drama and some good old fashioned ribbing as they sing and dance their way into your hearts. A road trip filled with music, singing and getting to know each other starts to build the foundation of a great relationship . Both characters are driven to achieve their dreams and to make this relationship work will take some fancy footwork. Good thing Jake is quick on his feet , knows when to put on the pressure and when to swing for the home run. I think this story and Matt's are my favorite. I really found it easy to connect with the characters and was caught up in the storyline from the first chapter. It flowed well, was easy to follow and left me with a happy feeling when I got to the end. I am eagerly looking forward to the next Nighthawk to bring home the prize.
I volunteered to review this story for my honest opinion
I am loving this series so much! I love how the athletes are pretty much womanizers in a way but they meet the right woman and their whole idea of relationships changes. They both work together to make it work as any relationship should

I really enjoyed Jake and Kate's adventure into love. Jake meets Kate when she's down on his way to New York. He offers her a ride since he's going where she needs to get to, that's when the attraction starts to bloom but Kate isn't quite sure about Jake and his intentions. Jake shows her though that he is the gentleman he portrays to be. Will Kate let Jake in because he's knocking to get in? Jean I loved this tale you have spun and I can't wait to read the rest. Your writing flows between your characters. You bring laughter and love to the plate in this baseball love story. **Reviewed for Sweet and Spicy Reads, ARC provided in return for honest review**
