Breakbattle Academy #2

The Execution: A Reverse Harem High School Bully Romance

Rate this book
They think they won.

The Elite thought it would end at the battle, but I'm taking them to war.

I will topple Landon, Michael, and Cole off their thrones, even if it means bringing the system to its knees.

Tensions are boiling beneath the surface of Breakbattle Academy. Protests are erupting, the lower classes are fighting back, and the Elites aren’t as invulnerable as they thought. The school is ready to blow.

All they need is the right girl to light the match.

The Execution is a reverse harem high school bully romance. This is year two in the series and features language, dark themes, and sexual scenes. If you're cool with that, dive in!

I’m going to begin by saying Andronika, AKA mother dearest to Zela, AKA Brenda, is a QUEEN.
I think she’s the character I love most in this book.

Second, we are finally revealed what happened that fateful day, and it is quite tragic. Very sad.
And actually, there never was a revenge plan against Derek, even though that’s what we are sorta led to believe.
We will get back to this in a minute.

Third: her revenge plans for Michael, Landon, and Cole were a bit... harsh. This is where her heavily lacking people skills shined through. Girl I’m not saying what they did was right, what I am saying is revenge is never the answer.
NONETHELESS, I am happy to report Zela learned the true meaning of forgiveness and let up.
So, Michael/Landon (who is bi, makes sense now)/Cole are the harem.
Which, then I thought... so was Derek, right?
We’ll come back to this.

Fourth: I’m gonna call out my predictions.
ADAM IS GOING TO HAVE A HAREM OF HIS OWN.Melody and Jordan. Because let’s face it: I am team Jordan. She loves Adam. Adam loves her. I think I’m seeing this correctly.
MISS MOON IS THE NEW ALL IN or whatever the fuck that math symbol stands for. Am I seeing this right? Idk. But I get the feeling that she’s trying to change the system too. My next guess is it’s Dr. Oquinn.

Fifth, and finally.
WHAT
THE
FUCK.
*spoiler alert*
DEREK AND ZELA ARE SIBLINGS???
THAT is why this all started??
And the most INFURIATING part is that she was leading him on THIS WHOLE TIME. GETTING CLOSE TO HIM, clearly not seeing that HE FUCKING THOUGHT SHE LIKED HIM, like... liked-liked, him. AND THEY’RE SIBLINGS.

That’s her big secret and oh my god did she handle this beyond poorly.
I mean... girl, read the room.

HOW DID YOU NOT SEE WHAT YOU WERE DOING ZELA?
Poor fucking Derek, no wonder he doesn’t trust anyone. Shit like this happens.
Holy fuck.

That plot twist was equal parts surprising and infuriating because Zela just behaved terribly.

(Also, and just a thought here, but did it ever occur to her that her father could be a different Jonathan Grayson?)

I also have to remember these are high schoolers.

Ugh, the audacity.
This is why I don’t want children. Just one.
I resonate with Andronika on this one.
Off to the next book.

The Execution is where our main character comes back after a traumatic even at the end of the last book. She's ready for revenge and she wants to hurt the people that hurt her, including Michael, Cole & Landon. Landon was the one that hurt her the most since she had kissed him and already had feelings for him. He's her first crush and he broke her heart by being stupid and not giving her the time to explain and not giving her a chance. She has a plan and she's going to execute it. Meanwhile, Adam is her best friend and finally gets the girl he was in love with. Also our main character confided to Derek about her past and that was pretty fucking sad but also lovely to see them grow closer with every page. It actually ended on a mind-fucking cliffhanger where you're left wondering I didn't want to believe it so I grabbed the next book hoping my hopes would come true.

I'm glad that this book was as fun as it was, and I think I have to thank the first two books for being willing to not offer as much in favor of setting things up and allowing things time to develop.

One common complaint with bully romances is that the bullying goes too far, therefore making the love interest(s) irredeemable or the prospect of the heroine ever forgiving/loving them too unrealistic or problematic.

The genre is, as a whole, walking a fine line between an enemies-to-lovers redemption arc and romanticizing a heroine getting together with her abuser. This is part of the appeal, since seeing character growth and redemption and treading that grey area to examine things are wonderful things that add depth and complexity, but it's also something that requires the author to really work hard to get it right.

If it's done bad, it's really bad.

In this series case, the author does a pretty good job at handling the matter because, unlike a lot of series, the elements are sliced apart more. There are two sets of bullies; the non-love interest and the love interest.

The non-love interests do the majority of bullying and are the ones who take it to the most extremes, while the love-interests really only commit one major act of betrayal and the rest of the time are either challenging Zela to battle and being unfriendly/hostile when she interacts with them.

The incident the love interests are part of is enough to affect the heroine to want payback, to feel betrayed and hurt, but it's not an action so evil or traumatic or unethical that it's conceivable that they could ever be redeemed in her eyes.

In my last review, I mentioned the incident, so I'll state it here too: a group of boys jumping Zela in the locker room to beat her up, with one, who is not part of the harem, deciding to rip off her wet suit, thus exposing her and her gender. This immediately shocked the love interest boys and it's alluded that they come down from their emotion-driven desire for revenge (since they think Zela was behind the actions committed against them by For All) and stop what they're doing (so, no, it doesn't descend into sexual assault or anything) and even feel like it was a mistake.

I can't speak for the non-love interests, but Michael, Landon, and Cole (who I'm 99% sure are the whole harem, since their names keep getting mentioned in the blurbs) are affected this way at least.

I find this a really clever way to handle things! We still get the bullying angle, we still get the love interests needing redemption, we still get the revenge plot, but we don't have that moral quandary over whether the boys can ever truly be forgiven and if it's right for the heroine to be with her bully/bullies. They commit one act and the book focuses on how they come to realize this and own up to their mistake and try to redeem themselves with Zela.

This separates this series from ones like Filthy Rich Boys andShunned, where the bullies and love interests are the same guys and the acts of bullying tend to be harder to forgive or bounce back from.

In that same vein, the actions Zela takes to get revenge don't go too far either, which is nice. Sometimes these books have a heroine shirk her morality and do equally terrible things back to her bullies that go too far out of "they need a harsh lesson for their crimes" and into "now the heroine herself is just a terrible bully after blood."

This book is also better about working in the voices Zela hears, though after the events of this book, I feel like the reason for that and her reason for getting close to Dereck don't have a strong enough correlation, even though up until the reveal it was strongly implied that these two things go together, since Zela seems to believe that by getting close to Dereck she can make the voices go away.

I want to talk about this in depth because I have come criticisms about why I think these two things don't mesh, so below the spoiler will be two important reveals for this book.

There's also something that, again, due to the reveal, must be put under a spoiler, but because it could be a trigger for some people, I want to talk about it.

If you want to know what the possible trigger is without reading the full spoiler, read here:

Also, the book insinuates that biological siblings and family innately have a connection because of blood, but I personally really hate that implication. It's not a big issue here but hearing a character go "we're family so we automatically have a connection" kind of made me groan. I hope it doesn't present itself as a problem later.

Now that that's all out of the way...

We're not getting more of a focus on the RH aspect; Landon and Michael have the biggest developments, with Cole coming in last. Landon's relationship with Zela is the most explored and Michael is working his way up there. Cole is still in the "I just realized I was wrong and apologized and will be working to redeem" phase at the end.

There is some sexual content in this installment, but not erotica; Landon and Zela get intimate with kissing and intimate petting/oral sex, but it's not described in high detail or anything. In this book, all the involved characters are sophomores, so they're 16/17. I don't know if this series will get more descriptive as it progresses and Zela's relationships become more intense. We shall see.

The story also leaves off on a wicked cliffhanger! I thought the next book was already out, but I jumped the gun by about 10 days, and then the final book will come out in early March.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with this book. I would have liked some more romance, but I'm hoping that what we're seeing is a proper build up for fireworks later on, and that this wasn't just a prelude to extreme instalove. I've been burned before, so I remain wary until proven otherwise.

I'll be picking up book #4 when it comes out.

Fudgesicles, this author knows how to end a book. Thank goodness all the books are out or I'd be pulling out all my hair. Talk about a cliffhanger. Throw in Zeke getting kidnapped by Cameron and his goonies and finally finding out why Zeke was obsessed with Derek and I'm a bundle of nerves lol. I expected something like Derek being related to her but as the series went on and they grew closer it was clear feelings were developing, at least on Derek's side so I'm not sure how I feel about this revelation. Kind of gut punched a bit, I imagine much like what Derek is feeling at the moment. I really am enjoying this story, while some parts are a bit monotonous as they go about their days, there are some moments that just slap you across the face and stick with you until the next one comes out of nowhere and throws another punch (I'm at least way) too slow to miss. I think I'm OK now with Landon, Cole and Michael, I still think what they did was worse than worse and sure they didn't put their hands on her but they still stood by while she got that a$$ kicking and did nothing. A little more groveling would not be frowned upon. I'm a grudge holder so even if Zela forgives them, they still have major groveling to do if you ask me! Stayed up until 3AM finishing this and it was really hard to not jump into the next one. It's a new day so I'm off because I can't get enough!

This book grabbed me and wouldn't let go. All the drama, romance, and battles ramped up, and I couldn't get enough. I love seeing Zela get stronger, show everyone how awesome she is, and start romances with her guys. This book kept things pretty PG since they're all sixteen, but I'm hoping we'll have more steamy scenes in the next book.

The romance. It’s annoying.
I definitely understand the attraction with Landon. It started before things went down, but regardless of her “revenge plots” she forgave way too easily, and there was no revenge. Lol.

They had her brutally jumped by several boys double her size, one of whom stripped her naked, and she just fell for them like it was nothing.

Ok I’m just coming here to say that I knew that bomb shell that happened. I feel like I knew that since awhile ago. Now here’s the thing, for a book I’m reading where the book rides on this huge thing and I guessed it in the first book? I don’t know how I feel about that.

I can finally see the reverse harem lol. It’s coming. But it’s just a bummer that it took this long to see it come about. And I am finally seeing these kids grow up. I’m glad about that, but I still feel like the author could have started this in junior year or something because these characters do NOT act their age.

The writing style of this author is kinda basic at times. I don’t mind it because I don’t mind the book, but I do think this writing style isn’t anything new or really exciting. The mystery of it all intrigues me the most.

Overall I’m still reading the series and I am enjoying it. High school drama man, gotta love it at times haha. 4.0 star rating.

A step up from the previous book

This book grabbed me and wouldn't let go. All the drama, romance, and battles ramped up and I couldn't get enough. I love seeing Zela get stronger, show everyone how awesome she is, and start romances with her guys. This book kept things pretty PG since they're all sixteen, but I'm hoping we'll have more steamy scenes in the next book.

I like the mystery of what the network and Cameron are up to, plus the For All person or people that keep pulling pranks. I have a theory as to who's behind it, so I guess I'll see if I'm right. I can't wait to dive into the next book after that brutal cliffhanger!

The story
The story picks up where The Plan left off; the boys abused Zela and figured out that she’s a girl, and now she’s back for revenge.

I know that’s the shortest summary ever, but it’s basically what the book is about. I was very glad that Zela was ready to tear them all apart because of what they did, since that was seriously messed up. It was perfectly paced, a lot was happening, and I enjoyed it a lot.

The characters
Zela was still great, I loved how she was on a war path! They definitely deserved it. Derek and Adam were still my favorite, and I’m very glad that I don’t really care for Jordan, so I’m glad it went this way :) Just like Landon said; Adam can make friends with a rock . I saw the ‘plottwist’ with Derek coming, but that didn’t made me scream any less. I definitely hope that it’s not true, because I love him to bits and want him to be together with Zela. So many things about Zela had me cracking up, she’s way too funny and I love how she’s always just herself.

I must say I had some trouble with how quickly she forgave certain people. For example, what she did to Michael was SO much worse than what she did to Landon! He I just thought that wasn’t fair, and that really annoyed me. I started to love Michael, that he’d do all that for her was just great to me. I don’t really care for Landon, but I do like Cole, just need to see more of him. It surprises me how easy everyone is about the sharing her part, I don’t know ANYONE who would ever be okay with that, while she knows basically 4 people? Lol, that’s a bit unrealistic to me. I love how they care for her however, and how they’re all this protective of her, especially Derek. Again, I don’t feel like Landon got enough shit for what he did yet.

The ending was again very intense, which made it impossible for me to stop reading. Can’t wait to see what’ll happen next! What I don’t really understand however, is why Zach wouldn’t just go to the principal and tell him what he knows about Zela? I’m not sure who For All is at this point, I’m thinking Melody or maybe even Adam? Or Adam’s mom, because this For All is definitely against the system and so is she? I don’t know.

Overall conclusion
Another story that I liked, I still love Derek to bits, but am a bit scared of the next one. I hope they’ll be okay.. If not, I would gladly date Derek thanks.

Interesting

The plot has thickened and is continuing in motion. There are so many different things at play. Though there are several frustrating things that this series, or author does that bug. One is glossing over events. I’d have liked to see Zee practicing with the guys and getting to know them more, rather then it be told in a glossing manner. I would have rather things not be breezes through or written in such a different way to what I’m used to. Often we change scenes quickly or we are talking about being at home for break but then we transition to her at school and while there was one sentence that mentions the transition it wasn’t enough to express it clearly enough.

I also keep forgetting that she’s 15 in the last book I guess we are to assume she’s 16 now since it’s a new year. I find the system still ridiculous and I find their idea of expansion ridiculous too unless the message is that this Network can have this level of influence.

We finally find out what’s up with Zee and Derek and why she was obsessed with him, but I still don’t think it’s true. Because it’s weird, and I didn’t get that vibe at all. That twist is a twist I won’t believe until confirmation. I hope Derek realizes.

The ending was a crazy cliffhanger though.

I’ve been sucked in to this series since I started, like family leave me alone, sucked in. I know it’s still very YA ish but the bully aspect is slightly different with this battle system.

Overall I still like the series even though I also am frustrated with it lol.

Oh hey..who expected the near incest shit? Not me.
This is why authors should not leave out important information from the first book in a series. I'm here for the step-siblings. Not for the half-sibling BS that was disguised till the end of book 2. 😳

Also, I don't know what I was expecting for the heroine's revenge plans. Sigh. That was just disappointing. It was good too..with the end result, but don't say revenge and do juvenile shit please.

Well, well.. these guys can be such douches sometimes.

The Execution was so easy to devour. There's just something about this series, the characters, or the writing that just makes me go into the zone of reading. I, of course, am rooting for Zee to demolish this stupid battle system. Especially with the threat of it being integrated in public schools.

Oh lord, this whole F class bullshit just made me so mad. So every elite douche had a right to be afraid of Zee coming after them. It was high time they were fed the same bullshit that they dish out. Especially Zach, I want to see him tortured for real because he's the biggest ass. Might even try with Cameron.

After that ending, I have no idea what is going to come at me next.

I loved this book so much. I was enthralled with the story and I couldn’t put this book down. It was all I could think about and I could not get through it fast enough. I devoured this book. I’m not a plot person, but this book had me so wrapped up in the plot, it’s unreal. I was constantly on the edge of my seat and always dying to know what would happen next! I need the next book so bad!!

So far the best book in the series, but I’m getting the feeling it’s going to be downhill from here.
Some wouldn’t like this book there’s a good amount of bullying, aggression between the sexes and so forth.
I enjoyed it on the whole and look forward to reading more

Again, there's no sex. There is a little bit of spice, but it's off page. I don't understand how Zela didn't see how Derek would react to her on all accounts. I did get a little bored throughout the book, but we're gonna finish out the series.

*FINISHES BOOK AND STARES INTO OBLIVION*

My mind is going 1000 miles per minute right now.
I’m struggling to process and compute everything that was revealed in this book.. part of me wants to be buried with this instalment because I actually adored (mostly) every moment; but the other part of me wants to throw it across the room and never pick it up again.
Let me explain..
note: I probably highlighted 70% of this book and thus, the quotes will be carrying this review.

Can I just say, Andronika Manning is the mother we wish we had and the mother we all want to become. She doesn’t take shit from anyone, most especially a man who wrongfully attempts to expel her “son” from school. Her points are irrefutable by the principles, assuring Zekes continued enrolment “I believe the only thing we have evidence of is that you have no grounds to expel my child…You will also take suspension, detention, and further meetings such as these off the table. Zeke has done nothing wrong. You will not treat him otherwise.”
She doesn’t ask, she tells. And that my friends is how things are done.
She a bad bitch raising a bad bitch (who can still be a bit immature at times but hey, we’re getting there), I digress.

Zeke is back bitches and she is going to help turn the elitist system on its head, while simultaneously getting revenge. She has an entire plan to be executed and it entails Zela battling her way to the top where she fucking belongs.
“”They’re not going to say anything,” I repeated. “They’re not going to get away with what they did to me. They’re not going to sleep a fucking wink without my face slipping into their nightmares.””
Zeke is on a warpath at this point.

I’m glad she at least has Derek and Adam throughout this to back her up because she will need it.
Derek asks to see the “real” Zela without her entire get-up and it’s clear that she takes his breath away.
“Derek was like a coiled serpent ready to strike at one wrong move but my days of fearing I would push him too far were over. We broke the barrier the day he found me naked on the floor and held me until my throat was too raw to sob. He was mine now. My friend. My Derek.”
Initial reaction to the above: SWOON, loving this for them.
End-of-book perspective:
it was at this moment above I should have realized something was OFF. She called him “her Derek” and now it all clicks into place (however, I didn’t make that connection until the end of the book).

I was just itching for her to see the guys again. I wanted to bask in their reaction to her being back at the school.
“With nothing left to distract me, my eyes wandered and drifted toward them. I felt their pull like magnets, like bees to the hive, like moths to light.
I looked at Zach, Cole, Michael, and Landon, and each one of them was looking back at me.”

The TENSION OHMYGOD.
When I read this all I could think was how amazing it would be to get a glimpse of the guys’ POV. I want to know what they are thinking after seeing Zeke back at school and how they react to everything she is doing as the battle Doctor (will get to that).

She confronts Cameron and he admits to being the face behind the For All persona; effectively carrying out his plan to get her expelled as a freshman.
“I took a step, pushing him back, and reached for the doorknob. “Remember one thing, it didn’t have to be this way. You brought it all on yourself.””
Cameron doesn’t really attract much attention during the school year this time, clearly biding his time for the right moment to strike (will get to this).
“There was never anything but a smile on his lips these days but I knew what lurked beneath, simmering beneath the surface waiting for the right moment to be unleashed.”

Zeke doesn’t dally and she wastes no time challenging 10 people, on her first day no less, to a battle. She does this with the end-goal of obtaining privileges that will help her game and eventually bring her status up in the school system.
Zeke is playing the long-game this time around..
She also is using her math skills to help other lower-class students to battle higher up’s for privileges that they never would had the chance to get otherwise.
“You’ve been training the Fs to get on their teams. You’re good because you use your crazy math skills to figure out how to take the higher classmen down, and that’s why you’ve been dominating in battles.”
Thus, the BATTLE DOCTOR is born.

We learn that the “network” extends beyond the school’s reach and is being run by wealthy, powerful people (including Derek and Cameron’s fathers).
The big goal for them is to open more schools like Breakbattle and reap the profits that the “network” would gain from that.
“Fs don’t get anything but the bare basics as a constant reminder we’re not good enough. That’s a crappy way to treat a kid and now they’re trying to spread it to other schools.”
Melody and the Stand Up organization are not happy with this development and plan to sabotage the entire ordeal.
When the committee makes it to the F dorm, they are greeted with a lovely surprise. One that puts this deal on hold for a little while.
With Cameron’s dad being so heavily invested in this, Cam is not thrilled.
“Cameron gripped my chin between two fingers. His touch was gentle, but a ripple went through my body. “If there are any more problems, I will hold you personally responsible... Zela.””
WHAT?! How in the fresh hell does he know her name…

Her first interaction with Cole, Michael, and Landon made me so anxious. Zela is a badass for marching up to them and speaking her mind; I adore her alouf and confident demeanour she plays that person perfectly. They reassure her that they weren’t planning on telling people about her real identity but they doesn’t mean they are going to be nice to her.
“We tried to pull that psycho off you and got a cracked rib and black eye for the trouble. We never wanted to know what you got going on in your pants, and as far as we’re concerned, we never found out.”
WAY harsh Cole.

It comes as no surprise that, as her first crush (and kiss!!), she hashes it out with Landon first and it’s nothing short of EXPLOSIVE.
“”Because you lied to me!”
“You never gave me a chance to tell you the truth!”
The scream ripped from my throat. The words would have bled if words could, but their ejection from me left a hole that did bleed.”

The fucking imagery is unparalleled.
She lays everything out on the table for him to hear and contemplate but it’s pretty obvious her words hit home.
Alas, she still wants to move forward with the revenge plan for him and part of that involves winning him back; to do that, she needs to make him jealous and what better way than to pretend you’re macking your bestie?
*ENTER ADAM*
“As far as it takes. I told you, Adam. He made me think he liked me, stole my first kiss, and then watched as I was beaten. I’m going to win him back... and then I will blend his heart like a smoothie.”
This is a bit dramatic not going to lie.

Though her ploy to make him jealous ends up drawing him right in and indirectly helps to push Adam and Melody together.
“I cried out when Landon’s hand suddenly clamped my ass and lifted me in the air. I didn’t have a chance to think before I was slammed against the wall and his lips crashed down on me. This kiss wasn’t sweet or gentle or loving, but neither of us were going for that.”
HOW is my stomach having palpitations at this?
Not sure but it’s happening.
I have to applaud the perfect timing of Michael bursting into the storage room, where he gets an eyeful of the two of them together.
“Our lips tore apart…Michael took in the scene—me pressed against the wall, lips swollen, Landon’s hand down my pants—and his jaw dropped.”
That absolutely kickstarted something in his head (probably both, “heads” if you get what I’m saying).

Her plans for Michael and Cole are no less brutal and I have to say, she was fucking RUTHY.
Michael is the first to step up and apologize to her and wants nothing more than her forgiveness.
What she asks of him actually made me a bit sick my stomach; it just felt a bit too cruel for the fact that he didn’t partake in her beating.
“”Lose, Michael.” I stroked his hands with my thumbs, almost lovingly. “Every single race. I want you to lose.””
My heart kinda broke for him here and if I’m being honest I didn’t think he would really follow through for her.
“He did it. Michael lost... for me.”
She clearly didn’t expect him to do it either, which sparks more confusion in her mind about hurting them.

Cole is a harder nut to crack because he inherently has the instincts of an alpha leader; thus, sensing that Zela was hiding something more than what she’s letting on.
Her plan for him is to take everything he cares about most at school, staring with becoming captain of the clubs he’s part of.
“You don’t care about anyone but yourself. But what you’re feeling right now—that feeling like no matter what you do or how hard you work you can’t get what you want. You care about that, and I’ll make sure you feel this way until you’ve learned something.” .

For All is back but this time, the pranks are benefitting the lower class students; Zeke realizes that Cameron is not the culprit this time around, we have an imposter in our midst.
I’m gonna say Melody or Miss Moon, likely the former; both passionate about changing the ways of the system, however, Melody has a fervour that can’t be ignored.

Things with Derek are a bit stagnant. He makes himself a bit scarce and acts meaner than usual towards her. What is up with him?? (It’s obvious to anyone with a brain). But what doesn’t make sense is him associating with the people who tried to ruin her life.
“Derek refused to explain what he was doing with Cameron, Heath, and Santiago that day. I wouldn’t tell him what I had planned for Landon. As a result, we spent most of our time reading books inches away from each other while I felt like we had never been further apart.”
This makes me sad because they have the cutest bond.

They go on a school trip to Orlando and hit up the amusement parks and SO MUCH SHIT GOES DOWN!
Landon wants to take things to the next level with their relationship and Zeke realizes it’s time to pull the plug and enact the revenge.
“I pressed his room key to my chest as I waited. I know what he wants to do. He believes we’re ready to take things to the next level. Landon feels this is real. He cares about me.
Which makes this the perfect time to dump him.”

WHY AM I GETTING SICK OVER THIS?

Her PTSD makes an appearance on the trip, which sparks a series of events.
This comes up after riding a coaster for the first time, only to have a full blown panic attack in the park, pulling her back to the time she was a child at the Christmas fair.
She causes a scene at the park, acting erratic and confused. Michael catches up to her in her hiding place and helps her to get out of the chaos of the park (SO SWEET).
She can’t understand why he would be nice to her after what she asked of him; his response is literally everything.
“It’s not just that you pretend you’re flying. You hide who you are behind this cocoon, but beneath it is this strong, smart girl who never gives up. A butterfly... is you.”

“I told you it was my choice to lose and one I was willing to make if it meant you’d forgive me…All I want is to make things right with my butterfly.”

If you think this was an emotional revelation, it’s nothing compared to the one Zela makes when she decides to just lay it all on the table for Landon.
She realizes she can’t break his heart when it’s clear how much he truly cares for her; made evident by the actions he takes to make her feel loved and cared for.
“”I don’t want to be casual anymore, Zela. You were the first guy I ever had the courage to like, and now, you’re the first girl I’m falling in love with.”
Landon blurred as his sweet, perfect confession undid me molecule by molecule.”

My heart SHATTERED at his words and I honestly don’t know how my poor organ was coping with this moment right here.
She panics and tells Landon to fetch Derek; he whisks her out of there in half a second and brings her to his room.
Poor fucking Landon.

It’s in this moment with Derek that we finally find out what had been plaguing her with PTSD memories since the beginning of the series; it’s traumatic and depressing as hell but I’m glad that she was able to talk about it with him.
“Derek was the first one I told, but as he held me and the pit loosened, I knew I had done the right thing.
It’s right that it was him, I thought. It was always meant to be him.”

They both share many truths that night and it certainly brings them closer…. But not in the way they each think.

After talking to Derek she needs to come clean to Landon about everything. “I’m going to lose you the moment I realize you’re all I want.”
She tells him of her plan to make him fall for her and them dump him but something stands out to him…
“A shadow fell over me. “You wanted to hurt me. Does that mean you want something else now?”
“Landon—”
“Tell me what you want, Zela.”
“I just did.” I squeezed my eyes shut and took the leap. “I want you.””

YES BABY!
I’m totally shipping this, especially considering he’s fine to share her love if that what her heart desires. A true gentleman.

Things with Michael and Landon are good now, so when they return to school Cole remains the outsider to their little group; that is, until her and Cole go to math competition at another school… “I couldn’t answer. Cole landed on me hard. His weight punched the air from my lungs and smacked my head into the pavement. Something wet trickled down my neck into my shirt.
She effectively saves his damn life, prior to wiping the floor with all the other contestants!
Note: I thought her injury would be worse but I’m glad it wasn’t serious.
Cole gains some serious perspective and respect from this move and the barrier between them finally cracks.
“I doubled down rather than admit I was wrong about you. But today you saved my life and then kicked ass at the competition with a bashed-in head. You’re badass, Zela.”

Her final act of vengeance is pure SAVAGE.
And the person she plans to deliver this retribution to, is the very person who brutally assaulted her in the lockers…
“”Zachary Fields, I—”
His lips twisted. “I’m not interested in what you have to say. Walk your ass back where you belong.”
“—challenge you to a tournament.”

She plans to take his elite spot and dump him in F class where he belongs, the fucker.
Adam, the bestest friend ever, won’t let her go at it alone and strikes his own tournament with another elite.
FUCK YEAH. Let the battles begin.

The tournament was a FUCKING NAIL-BITER.
The number of times I put my book down just to breathe and calm my racing heart were literally too many to count.
It was so close.
I really didn’t know if Zela was going to pull through the way things were going, it could have been anyone’s game when they tied.
UNTIL, she hit the basketball court with a fierce determination.
“”I can’t believe I did it,” I breathed.
“I can.” Cole held me tight. “You’re amazing, Zela Manning,” he whispered in my ear. “I think I’ve met my match.””

LET’S GOOOOO.
When I tell you I literally celebrated like it was my damn tournament win.
The rush of serotonin to my brain during this moment was euphoric.
The steps to get to this point could not have been more PERFECTLY executed.
She earned her spot and no one would take that from her (I’m hoping).

Zela is an ELITE.
She busted her ass to get there but it was worth it.
Now that she has some semblance of power, she only has one person left to address.. our boy Cam Cam.
“Now Zach is going to get a punishment that has been a long time coming. With that done, all I have left”—I rose on tiptoe until we were close enough our lips almost brushed—“is you.”
Her first task, end the expansion (the very thing Cam’s dad is banking on).

The END of the book though.
Fuck me, we got bamboozled.
This is where all my composure completely collapsed and I sat staring at my wall for a good 20 minutes trying to come to terms with what it would mean. ..
“”I want to spend all night reading with you. I want to curl up in bed with you while you snore in my arms.”
“Derek—”
“I want you and only you.” He reached for me. “Zela, I love you—”
“I’m your sister!””

NO. I definitely did NOT anticipate this.
Although, her reasoning is only based on the fact that she saw her father’s name was Jonathan Grayson, also Derek’s dad’s name.

It’s definitely possible that it’s a different Jonathan and they are, in fact, not related. I have to hold out hope for that because I refuse to accept this.
Derek apparently refuses as well because he runs from her like a stampede was hot on his trail.
Zela gives chase and a split second before making it to his door on the elite floor, shit goes SIDEWAYS.
*Cue Cliffhanger*
And since Ruby tends blow these out of the water, I already knew my head would be a mess on conflicting emotions by the last paragraph.
“I spun around. Cameron smiled at me as he, Heath, Santiago, and the other Elite boys poured out of the room…
He shoved the cloth in my mouth...The last thing I saw before the cloth went over my head was Cameron’s smile.”

INSTANT goosebumps.

Ruby, you are a CRUEL and a sick GENIUS for the twist that closes out this book.
If it happens to be true though I will be utterly and completely devastated.
I love Derek too much as a potential harem member to come to terms with this.
Note: the confirmed harem members are Landon, Cole, and Michael.
I honestly don’t know if I will be able to push through the series if Derek is really her fucking brother.
Bloody fucking hell.

And now you understand why I’m stuck contemplating everything.
This was more of a synopsis but I like coming back to my reviews if I can’t remember what happened in a book, don’t come for me.

~4.5 stars~

Losing steam, in many ways.

I loved the first book. Wasn't entirely thrilled about the second one, but I still enjoyed it. And now this one just feels odd and wrong. The writing is still good, but I feel like a lot is happening so fast that nothing is really developed well. Everything feels like a bit of a let-down after all the hype.

The biggest problem: the relationships.

Zela didn't choose the guys who I thought she might for her harem. And the ones that she has now started liking/loving are less than interesting, to be honest. They seemed like insignificant side-characters in the previous books, and now they're suddenly the main attraction? With the personalities of wet blankets, I might add. And the romantic scenes were rather lame, at best. No heat, no steam.

Also, the way Zela punishes Michael is just plain dumb and too evil for whatever he did. And I feel like the characters spend a lot of time justifying her punishment like it's something actually passable or acceptable. Spoilert alert: it was horrible, and Zela's a crappy person for it.

And to be honest, having read how Marnye in C.M. Stunich's books plans and carries out her revenge, this book felt like a very cheap version of an actually good "execution" of a revenge. Zela didn't seem to have too many plans, or then she had a lot of them (back-up plans, too?) but they all were sort of forgotten in the end, in a way, like they weren't big deals to begin with. So I suppose I struggled with why this book was written, then, if this is how it all played out.

Aaaaalso, the whole twisty thing in the end with Derek was a big bummer. He was my only shining star in this series. And a spoilery whine (and this is a HUGE spoiler):

I don't know, man. Not sure if I'm invested in the whole "Down with the Breakbattle system" business, which is all there is to look forward to anymore. I might give up on this series for now. Unless Zela decides to find more exciting harem members..

DNF. I just could not get on board. I feel like things were not properly explained to the readers in order to keep secrets from us for a big reveal later, for me this tactic did not work. I seriously questioned why she was so obsessed with getting close to Derek in order to get revenge? Like, why. I know what the guys did to her was wrong and messed up, but her war path seemed harsh. And there was no romance. I read other other spoilery reviews and dang...but like also I would probably hate this series if I continue further.

Well fuck. I was not expecting that ending damn I was so rooting for Derek to be a harem member!
I’m loving these twists and turns though. Can’t wait to see what happens next with Cameron’s smarmy entitled ass.

Amazing keeps getting even better

Ruby Vincent is such an amazing author she creates Series where you get to know the characters and you have these great plots and you get to books where you enjoy literally every minute of the book you feel like you're right in there with them the twists and turns in this book are just icing on the cake. I had read a few reviews before starting the series because I like to see The Bullying levels so I can brace myself if need be and I like that this series is light on the bullying in my opinion it's just the right amount to make it all work yes. But when I read reviews I had seen a spoiler so I went into it knowing this spoiler however there might be a Twist to the spoiler where it might not be true I still don't know but it's going into that I think I still would have maybe guess if this could be an option with this twist regardless if it's true or not true it's just so well done it's such a great idea I definitely am rooting for one outcome it's quite freely is the character really wants someone specifically in their life yet they don't realize that someone else is filling that role for them it may be the person that they want to be filling that role should be feeling another that's just one thing I love about the series I really love my heart Adam in the series not just that it's Adam but that he turned into a great character in the series and I love the glimpses into Evergreen the weavings of all and I love the glimpses into Evergreen the weavings of all the books into each other yet you don't need to have red Evergreen to enjoy the series but it's definitely a plus especially if you love Evergreen like me but the series really does stand on its own the plot is so great and different in the genre this system of the school it's very interesting how this school is setup I've never read a book where it was about a school that is said I've been this way showcasing imbalances and fighting against that the relationships are interesting the main character's past and her motivations very interesting to get insight into her past and her motivations for everything are revealed yet there's still more twists and turns to be uncovered but the book is very satisfying the series knows how to easy satisfying while still keeping you interested but again even if you were to take these major plot points away at this point the author has been building these characters that it's just interesting reading about their interactions and Dynamics and the budding relationship between characters romantic and otherwise Ruby dance it really knows how to write a series it just keeps your attention the whole time it keeps you sucked in I keep you in the world I was just so well Evergreen also had this once it got to this point where we are now in the world and every minute of the book is interesting no matter what now that you're in it things are established and the way she writes and then add all of that great plot on top of the Great Character interactions I don't know if I'm articulating this properly all I can say is that some Ruby Vincent is such a great writer and I really enjoy this series so much I'm loving it and I'm happy there's two more books left and I'm happy after the series I have the sequel series to Evergreen Somerset I said to read the three left to read as they come out and I look forward to everything that she writes in the future I hope she sticks with this genre or at least contemporary and rh because she really shines with how she writes contemporary relationships and Rh I love that several relationships are explored at once like several romantic relationships it's like multiple books in one which makes it an epic book and again romantic relationships or friendships they're just done so well it's so well-written she really shines with characters and writing these relationships again even getting glimpses into Evergreen and the interactions of that family now in the future. She just had such a talent for writing these relationships and then I love we get multiple with RH. She does RH right what it should should be at least what I wanted to be like multiple relationship stories in one book all centering around one plot she just really shines at this she's such a great writer I'm gushing because I read a lot of books and she seriously one of my favorite writers I love writers who can write like this and make me want to read about the characters literally doing anything and this book is where we're getting to the point we're learning more about the characters getting those interactions from the beginning leading into the next book which I just started and it's just gets better and better so looking forward to finishing book 4 and 5 and book 3 was amazing

wow

Well this is just one big old roller coaster ride.

I freaking love this series. Zela and her friends, her boys, her family and ugh amazing

It’s also cool to see Adams parents as adults and his siblings. Hopefully we meet baby number six.

I can’t spoil this book but I will say people get what they deserve. Revenge is taken and things fall as they should.

5⭐️‘s

Here’s my favorite quotes from this book

“They’re not going to say anything,” I repeated. “They’re not going to get away with what they did to me. They’re not going to sleep a fucking wink without my face slipping into their nightmares.”

“How can such a pretty girl... turn into such an ugly guy?”
I made a strangled noise. “Derek!”

“And as your friend, I will fuck Zach, Landon, Michael, and Cole up.”
My smile melted away.
“I’m serious, Zela.” Derek easily slipped into my proper name. “It doesn’t matter that they thought you were a boy. They went too far and they’re not getting away with it.”

“It’s not against the rules,” he agreed. “It’s obvious you never belonged in the F Class and you’re coming for what should be yours. I respect that. But...” His voice became frosty. “Passing it on to your F friends so they can cheat their way on the teams and take spots that don’t belong to them is not right.”
I stopped dead. “What are you talking about? I didn’t help anyone cheat.” ~Mason and Zeke

“I’ll tell you how it happens,” he went on. “You’re killing yourself with all these battles and it’s finally caught up to you. Have you seen yourself, Zela? Even without the splint you look like microwaved death.”
“You say the sweetest things to me.” ~Derek and Zeke

“So for this dance...” Adam nudged my shoulder. “Just how far are we taking this thing because I should let you know my virtue is off-limits.”
I barked a laugh. “Just your virtue? What about the bases? Can I cop a few feels? Make out a little?”
He hummed. “I’m good with some over-the-clothes action but I’m no cheap date. You have to at least buy me dinner before things start coming off.”

“And because, more than anything, I don’t want to be casual anymore, Zela. You were the first guy I ever had the courage to like, and now, you’re the first girl I’m falling in love with.” ~Landon

“If the best part of your morning is eating breakfast with him or sitting on your bed goofing off. Or if it breaks your heart when they cry and puts it back together when they laugh. If even when you’re blindingly mad at them... they’re still the person you most want to talk to. It’s worth going after that no matter what’s happened in the past.” ~Derek

“And me,” he said. “You have me too.”
Despite the pain swirling inside of me, I smiled. “I know I do.”
You’re mine now, I thought as I closed my eyes. You’re finally mine. ~Derek and Zeke

“No, Zela. It was you.” He set me back on my feet. “You were always Elite and I mean that as more than some stupid class. I’ve never met anyone as smart, funny, kind, or patient as you.” ~Derek

This series and it’s characters are enjoyable, and I like the premise. It does suck you in and makes you interested in reading more and more.

After the end of book 1, and the incident she endured, she’s out for revenge on Michael, Landon and Cole, who betrayed her. They all, along with Adam, Derek and Zach, now know she’s a girl.

I will say her revenge isn’t extreme, which I could appreciate, because the guys do show some remorse (eventually lol.)

There are relationship developments with Landon, and some with Michael, in this one. I just finished the series, so I will say one of my complaints is that I don’t think the harem had equal time. I felt like a lot of time was spent on Landon, but barely any time was given to Michael, or even Cole. That being said, I also don’t feel like the harem members are fully fleshed characters. They have their characteristics, but I don’t feel like they have deep personalities that we got to really know.

The subplot with the Battle Doctor and Zela fighting against the school by helping others is interesting, but I also keep wondering why parents allow their kids to go there. “The best school in the country/world” but kids really don’t get equal treatment, and who wants to feel inferior? Especially when those in the upperclasses don’t believe they should have to keep battling for their privileges, just because.

SLIGHT SPOILERS:

We find out why Zela is so desperate to get close to Derek, which is that she believes he’s her half brother. She tells him this after he kisses her and admits that he’s fallen in love with her since finding out she’s a girl the year before. We also find out her trauma, in trying to find her dad when she was 6, and we find out why Derek is lonely with his lack of friends or letting anyone in.

The idea that Zela has of wanting to know her brother, and that blood family is everything, is really annoying throughout the series. It gets worst for me in book 4, and it just makes her out to be completely naive.
