All Hail Jacqueline! She has the best lines for getting back at Drake.
Okay, let us get the fun parts over with. Once again, Drake is a big goofball of idealism and pragmatism that constantly spouts quotes from (and frankly steals his spells from) Anime and Manga that makes for an entertaining experience for those of us nerds that LOVE that stuff. This book is a direct continuation from where the last book left off. This time the main focus is interacting with the rest of the "good" population of the Tutorial and finishing off the Ant quest in order to get the rewards owed him.
I have a feeling that a lot of people are going to hate me for rest of this review; but here it goes.
Arthur Inverse needs to take better notes of his own timeline in the story if he is going to refer to how many days are left and giving a reference to an event that happened in the past. As an example, Drake and his crew have been camped out at the other fort of survivors for at least 30 days. It took at least 14 days to finish the rescuing of the people and finishing off the goblins from the last book to recuperating from the big battle and starting to move the survivors to the new fort. The author had the gall to mention that it had only been 3 weeks since Theo had been hurt by the bad guys; this statement was so jarring that it pulled me out of the story to realize the Author had not paid the slightest bit of attention to his own storyline (Highly annoying as the reader).
The author also has no business writing about romance. None. At all. Stop Trying. Clair needs to die. She is a worthless character that does absolutely nothing except prove that the author has no clue what he is doing when it comes to romance. Here are the reasons that I say this: *Drake has already mentioned multiple times throughout this book that he is NOT interested in the girls that have found their way into his Party. He admits that some are cute, but he does not have the time or the inclination to get involved with anyone as he has way too many other things to focus on in order to get stronger so he can find and protect his family. *I cannot stress enough that the previous point was brought up multiple times ad nauseum; especially when some of the characters kept trying to sneak into his tent at night (bleh). *(This might be considered a spoiler... sort of) Clair is not actually in love with Drake, She was a victim of extreme circumstances where she relied on her brother to keep her alive and act as an anchor for her sanity as she apparently isn't someone who would be able to be mentally flexible enough to handle being in this new world. With the death of her brother in the previous book (caused by her or him depending how you want to look at it), the fact that she apparently was raped by the goblins, and wanted to give up on life. Drake somehow convinced her that she is worth living for and she must be stronger than she thinks. She grasps onto that lifeline and makes Drake her new anchor; I believe any therapist, psychiatrist, or psychologist will agree that she isn't in love with Drake but something else. *Clair also acts like a the clingiest and neediest of girlfriends long before she even accidentally is acknowledged by Drake as being "His" which only happens because of an apparent personality shift he is undergoing which seems to be a random mechanic unique to this "system." It is truly painful to read about. *Clair's role as support is so specific in her build that the only person her buffs seem to work for is Drake; yes the buffs she can provide may be powerful, but it is short lived and can only be used the once before she basically passes out. In my opinion, not really a necessary character to keep around.
The author also has the artist character (Don't have a clue what her name is) that almost makes no sense. I genuinely thought that she was being set up as a future love interest as she seems to absolutely adore Drake from a distance, and seems to be into many of the same things that Drake is: Art, anime, manga, collectible trading cards. They have a better possible match than friggin Clair!! Except she seems to only be in the story to create things that Drake is interested in because Drake never meets her in either of these books. Weird mechanic to this book series.
The storyline of what happened inside the fort with Shigurre in charge seems unnecessary. It might be a storyline being set up for the future books, but right now it felt like filler. To each their own on this one. It could be an argument that it is what makes Shigurre grow up in mentality to be an actual leader and not one just going through the motions. But if we argue that, than what was the purpose of him talking about his past in that he was raised to be the best of the best in his family, to be a leader with all of the skills? I am not sure, except he is 16/17 in this book, so someone probably had to show him his beliefs were extremely limited at this point?
We also see random looks into other tutorials; of a potential new threat in the next book that Drake will probably kill almost instantly when they meet, a view of his friends that he has mentioned a couple of times, and my favorite- his family!
Anyway, I genuinely hope you enjoyed this book more than I did. I did find it fun at times, but seriously, the author needs an editor or publisher to have these tough conversations with him.
I do my best to separate quality of the writing for my personal opinion. I think the writer is skilled. Personally though I do have a few honorable mentions for things that I didn't personally like. When it comes to the sequel I am basically looking for everything that made the first book worth reading and then a little more. I definitely think we got that little more. We're still in the tutorial for the entirety of the second book. The character still over the top with his anime and manga references. I'm not nor have I ever really been a fan of that kind of stuff so almost all of it goes right over the top of my head. So to me I guess I'm more in the position of bear or Segura and not understanding the main character's references but still enjoying his progression. The part that I did find cringy and to be honest I've never liked whatever it comes up is the multiple potential romances. It's going to take a little bit more explanation than that. No matter what story that I'm reading I want there to be an element of romance. That video game called outer limits I believe was supposed to have had no Romance and yet it did just not for the main character. Don't know why I bothered me so much but it did. It felt like they lied to me. Option two seems to be to do a harem book. From my point of view it's kind of like fantastic graphics. In the beginning it's amazing but if the game plays not there I'm going to lose interest. So while I will read them and do enjoy them I'm still going to be more interested in the story. Option three is a solo Romance between the main character and the love interest. I like this too but like the aforementioned I'm good with it being a smaller portion of the overarching story just so long as it is there. The last option I'm going to talk about is the one in which the author has no intention of doing menajahtwa or harem, but still insists on adding multiple possible Romance characters. I have read books where the author chooses this option and does it well. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that the author does it in a way that I like or I'm okay with. The way this author handles it comes off as very cringy to me. Nails on a chalkboard. That's the only thing in the series so far that I do not like in any way shape or form. It does however appear that we've got that resolved in this book and it shouldn't be a problem moving forward in the series. That said I eagerly await book 3 to be released. I would like to see the series continued to receive the audio treatment. I have a bias towards audiobooks, but prefer to check out the story via Kindle unlimited before spending the extra money on an audiobook. Lastly I'll simply say a round of applause for everybody who had a hand in bringing this story to us, the Amazon readers.
3 1/2 stars The overall plot of the series is interesting, especially with the inner battles Drake and Bjorn have with their changing races. The pacing is done very well keeping the excitement on high through most of the book. Upgrades and loot boxes are the most fun but there was some overkill in these as they were reviewed so often. Character development was so-so. The main characters would show some real depth but then switch back into stereotypes for the majority of the book. Every woman involved was written horribly. They were weak and all of them had defense or support skills (stay in the kitchen ladies). I thought Claire might be different after what she went through with her brother but then she’s pouting when Drake doesn’t pay her enough attention. It doesn’t make sense of why he would like her. I am looking forward to see how things change on Earth and how Drake’s old friends and family react to his changes.
Takes it about half the book to really get started. The author takes his time wrapping up stuff from previous books and laying out for the rest of this book is going to go but once he finally does get started it's quite the adventure. Plenty of action and adventure. Looking forward to the third book in the series. I don't know how I could tell you anything about two without ruining it for you, I apologize for any spelling errors. I'm writing this review with voice to text mainly to help the authors numbers
To be honest just read you just gotta read it, one of the best LitRPGs I have read in a long time the characters the world they way the books is laid out, its no stop action with heart felt moments what's no to like, for me, I hope this series continues to 20 something books, definitely my top 3 (primal hunter #1, the Tutorial #2 Dual Class # 3) don't get me wrong plenty of more great LitRPG books but these three I just can't wait for the next book to come out.
Read the books you wont regret it the mc is such a sarcastic a@@ that its hysterical but you can also see the growth the references to anime and the like weren't overdone yes the mc is op but he got there from hard work and his own trials. T he books also show power isn't free and that there is always a bigger fish, im excited to see where they story goes and where it leads i understand it takes a while to write a novel so I will impatiently wait till June of next year....... read the series I read constantly and I loved it
I like the series and the power progression. I'm still having reservations about the MC and his Distinct personality. This book, like the last, is chocked full of anime references, which I don't all understand, as well as some pop culture. However, the next book should be interesting as the tutorial is over.
Sneering and smirking abounds in the Deus Ex Machina mess. Silliness is fine, but our characters are continuously making moronic choices, monologuing, and just being all around not-much-fun-to-read. Our MC has become particularly unreadable. I guess I'll probably start the third one but I'm not really looking forward to it.
Can’t wait for the next book I know it says it comes out next year but really hoping that’s a glitch can’t wait to see his family reunite both his party and actually family along with how he handles bear
So, I am aware of maybe 30% of the references scattered throughout this epic series. However, I dont care. I still love everything about this masterfully written Saga! Can't wait for the next book.
Well Written, Engaging Story, great Character Development
I was prepared for this series to be a filler while I waited for another book to come out from one of my regular authors. Instead, I am eagerly awaiting the 3 installment and joined Arthur’s Patreon to stay on top of the progress!
Well, the lead character is still an annoying ass who still can’t listen to advice to save his life. In fact, all the characters are annoying beyond belief. I’d imagine this is an author character flaw as well.
Another great read! Once again I got in regular trouble for reading when I needed to be doing life stuff. Really enjoyable cast of characters, love the snarky Guide, well thought out class, skills and levelling system. A really solid into to LitRPG genre if you haven't tried already, but enjoyable for pre-existing addicts 😀
